- Hello :)
This is the requested transcription I did of the Blood, Sweat & Tears song "You've Made Me So Very Happy" from their self titled 1968 album. Jim Fielder was the bass player on this track .
This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Advanced - Learning Songs subject.
This request comes from a long time supporter. Thank you for this Bob, it's a great song with a pretty tricky bass line ;)
This sounds very "orchestrated" to me. There are a lot of time changes, and I'm pretty sure it was conducted when it was recorded. I can imagine it being recorded live in a big room with a conductor, and some carefully placed microphones. haha...but then again, I could be wrong :)
Now whether or not this is a written bass line, that's the big question. I can't really say for sure. I would love to know though :) The line uses a lot of roots and 5ths, but with some advanced rhythms, it really shows how much you can get with just roots and 5ths!
This one is all about reading the rhythms and watching out for the tempo changes.
I hope you enjoy it :)
Thanks for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe.

Always loved the bass line in that song. Busy but not overdone. Props for doing the long version too. Another out of the park cover !!!
haha...there's a short version? :) Thank you!
God bless the child asap! It's wonderful how without a really great bass line a song can feel very dull.
I completely agree. A good bass line makes the song come alive! I'll check out that song.
When I was a kiddy-wink back then, years before I played Bass, I just heard songs like this and songs by Chicago as mere corny "pop tunes"....Seeped into my subconscious, though..Short-hand Dynamics, rhythm changes, melodies, interactions.. Grew up during punk, post-punk, emo, and grunge self-absorption eras...now there's the current Taylor Swifty Swifty etc. type pop.( monotone drivel)..I'd always held onto my jazz and Big Band recordings , saw some new horn bands live. Dynamic tunes in under 5 minutes! Thank you!
My pleasure...really. Thanks!
Great bass line 👏❤
Hey Frank, it's a good one for sure...thanks!
Greg, You've made me so very happy posting this transcription! THANKS. I love the BS&T rhythm section, and as always, you played the bass line perfectly! Spinning Wheel has a great bass line too (hint, hint 😉)
hehe...hint taken. I'll check it out ;) Thank you :)
The trumpet solo has some nice walking bass. BTW, BS&T's performance at Woodstock was finally made available (via digital download) a couple years ago. I had heard about it for awhile...bad sound, etc. Well, yeah. During the trumpet solo, it's almost all bass & Lew Soloff. It's 100% live, a great document of that era, IMO.
Great job! I have always loved BS&T...since before I even thought about playing bass. In the day, heard this stuff...and Chicago, Santana, Rare Earth, Motown, Sly, The Carpenters, etc...on AM Pop Radio. Jimmy Fielder is a fantastic player/musician. Post-Fielder BS&T has Ron McClure. He's no slouch. ;-)
Those are some good names you listened to ;) 70's music was so good!
Great stuff I might have to write it all down to keep up
Don't feel bad...that's what I do ;)
You've Made Me So Very Happy with this cover.Thank you Greg
haha...good one ;) Thanks!
Sweet! Great song. Weekend fun!
Hey Mimi...have fun with it :)
Thank you very much. Always loved the arrangement and the bass line, but it rocks -- or rather: swings -- even more when brought to the forefront in this way.
I guess it does kind of swing doesn't it? Swung 16ths? Thanks!
Once again, you've done an absolutely fabulous job. Made me so very happy!
Thank you!!
You're very welcome...thank you :)
Great, perfect, beautiful, congratulations!
Thank you so much 😀
What a great song with so many interesting chord changes. Thank you for breaking down another great tune!!!
My pleasure...thanks :)
What a great bass line! Well done Greg!
Thanks very much...cheers!
Hey Greg,
Great selection by BS&T. Wow great playing and transcription. I believe the bassist was Jim Fielderman, not sure of spelling. The man could make a few notes sound like 20 notes. Thanks for transcribing and playing this complicated bass line.
Frank
Hey Frank, it was my pleasure :) Have fun giving it a try!
I REMEMBER THIS SONG , VERY NICE
Thank you Mark.
You should listen to the Edwin Starr and Blinky version of this song. The wonderful Motown production just adds that magic to it. To top it off, James Jamerson plays the bass line in that version of the song, and it grooves.
I just had a listen. Classic Jamerson. I'm adding it to the list. Thank you...I'm looking forward to it :)
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm looking forward to your transcription. Your playing is a joy to listen to. Cheers.@@BassCovers
Great job! I believe that was Carol Kaye on that track. Jim Fielder was BS&T’s bassist at that time, but that track was Carol’s.
I used to own the 1x15 Guild cabinet that Jim used in the studio on most of their early recordings.
It sounded amazing!
Hi, thanks for the comment. I searched online a little bit, but I couldn't find anything about Carol Kaye playing on this track. What have you found? Thanks!
@@BassCovers, Carol Kaye played on Brenda Holloway’s recording of it (maybe for Motown). She wasn’t the bassist on this version.
@@davidhenderson8506 Exactly! Thank you...
(I have one of Kaye's Basslines books from that day with the Holloway transcription).
🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍
Thanks!
Classic.
for sure!
Very cool👍
Thanks Eugene!
Wow. You are amazing.
And you are very kind...thank you :)
It goes well beyond the roots and fifths with all the chromaticism and pentatonic playing.
Way beyond.
Busy👍
very :)
Great track & transcription. Can you tell us a little about the Jazz bass you are suing and what strings you are using on it? Thanks man, another great job!
Thank you, Greg! Such a fun, memorable song. You nailed all of those time and tempo changes!
Hey Thomas, thanks for the message.
I'm using a '76/'77 USA Fender Jazz with EMG Pickups and a Bad-Ass bridge. The strings are D'Addario round wound.
I hope that helps and thanks again :)
Hey Bob, thanks man :) I hope you enjoy it...have fun :)
Hello Greg. I've always loved "Come Monday" by the late Jimmy Buffett. It's not a very difficult bass line, but It's effective. Would you consider doing it? Thanks
I'll check it out...thanks!
What's this Bass. A classical Jazz bass?
It's impressive. Saludos.
Thanks, it's a 76 US Fender Jazz with EMG's and a Bad Ass bridge.
Hey friend. I come here to ask a favor, publish this sound of you playing the bass. Jota Quest - A Tarde. There is no one on RUclips who posted this song. You will be the first and you will get a lot of views. Thanks.
I'll check it out. I did Na Moral ruclips.net/video/ucFptLvulBw/видео.html
