What amazes me is that they do all these various covers just to pass the time and they do them so well; let's not forget they are full time musicians who spend most of their time touring and performing their own music.

These girls are awesome! I've been watching them for some time, and never saw a performance I didn't like! I love their raw, stripped down covers they do. It really showcases the amount of talent they have. Not many artists can sit down, with 2 guitars in a block room, without auto tune and lots of effects, and sound incredible!👍😎🎸🎶

If you have never seen them in person you owe it to yourself to catch them live if they are anywhere near you. I saw them open for Elvis Costello in Memphis in 2015, and they were absolutely amazing. They even played a few songs with Elvis Costello. I’m sure I’ll see them again in the near future myself, and they added a drummer and bassist to the band last year so that should be an interesting change as well.

They grew up singing 3 part harmony with their older sister Jessica as The Lovell Sisters Band. Straight Bluegrass. They were very good.
Jessica (violin) quit to go to college, Rebecca (mandolin, guitar) and Megan (Dobro, Lap steel) formed Larkin Poe. Their music has gone through a lot of changes during the past decade, and their sound is unique. A mix of Bluegrass, Pop, Rock, Blues music
It's all been good, some of it great. They seem to have settled on Blues based Rock the past few years.
I highly recommend delving into their catalog

Agree entirely with your analysis Fil. I've listened to a huge amount of varied music over the years and I can honestly say these two women are my current favourites - they seem totally comfortable playing covers or original material. Rebecca has a great voice and is a talented guitarist. Meghan provides seamless support vocals and adds another dimension altogether on lap steel guitar. As you say Fil these two sisters have the ability to change the dynamic on any song they perform which always makes for something extraordinary. I also like that they are very articulate and can talk about their music in detail. For me, these two are edging into the Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa, Richard Thompson category of music - and that is the very best!

So pure and unpretentious. Very talented young ladies. Happy you featured them. They, like you, represent hope for independent artists in this day and age. It really has to be a way of life and a bit of luck in sorrounding yourself with other dedicated like-minded artists.
Substance abuse destroyed many of those I played with. Problem I had was that we were overly ambitious in the type of music we wanted to perform and it took many hours of practice to create new music or learn impossible ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Rush, etc. covers. We would get some attention, next thing you know drummer has a near death experince and then try to replace someone who has that level of ability. There was no internet.. This is why I stopped trying to make a living out of it. Larkin Poe will be better known thanks to you Fil!

Thanks for reacting to Larkin Poe! I might have suggested this one when you did a reaction to Miley Cyrus's version of this song. These sisters are so talented and can literally play dang near any genre. Their versatility is amazing. Their main direction is blues/rock, Americana. They grew up as bluegrass players, but always had an affinity for classic rock (their parents influence) and later a massive affinity for traditional blues. There is a massive amount of material on RUclips of them performing live, both their original material and paying homage to their influences with covers straight from their bedrooms or hotel rooms. Here's enough selection to keep you going for quite a while!! It's somewhat chronological. From most recent to the beginning. Check it out!! 🤘🏼🎸🎶🔥

Interesting what you say about signing to labels. Winners of the TV Sing Off Pentatonix were signed to to Sony as part of the prize, Sony didn't know how to market an a cappella band and failed to give them the next part of their career after the boost of TV. The next year's winners, Home Free, took the contract but forewarned by Px started building on their (temporary) fame to create a live shows/YT career. They bought themselves out of the contract after a few years with no loss of momentum. Their lead singer is often asked why he isn't signed to a major label for his solo stuff but he knows your contract is likely to be gathering dust while your career languishes if they can't pigeonhole you.

Wow. This was great. I have been trying to learn Dobro - this girl can play. One thing I find difficult with the dobro is the strings are off the frets so there is no tactile feedback if you are off. One thing that I see with the top players like Jerry Douglas is they are always looking at their bar hand to ensure they are exactly over the fret.

I wonder how Rebecca gets this almost acoustic like sound....
    Maybe an acoustic amp ?

I've seen a video of them, and they "go to work" sort of as part of their creative process. They see it as their job, and have a very strong work ethic, they play off of each other, and know each other very well. It's as if they each could finish each others sentences, and sometimes do.

    Thanks for covering these ladies.
As other folks have mentioned, they were originally The Lovell Sisters Band from about 2004-2009, pure Bluegrass, until oldest sister Jessica resigned from the group to go to college and get married. They had a whole different sound than what Rebecca and Megan do now.
Plenty of Lovell sisters live performances on YT to check out. (just a suggestion...) I'm including the links for two of my favorites. Unfortunately, the audio volume on both of these seems to have been turned down in the last year or two. But you could turn it back up.
My favorite song... an original... When Forever Rolls Around. Jessica on lead vocal.

Another favorite of mine. Cover of "I've Forgotten you." Rebecca on lead vocals. In 2006, at age 15, Rebecca won the MerleFest mandolin contest. Youngest person, and first female, to ever win it.

Nice analysis. Searching through your catalog, I couldn't find Elliot Randall of Steely Dan's Reelin' In The Years fame. Such a gifted and underrated guitarist. Hope you consider doing an analysis of him.

No one has mentioned in the comments that they were originally a trio- there is another sister, Jessica, who originally performed with Megan and Rebecca as the Lovell Sisters. Larkin Poe is Rebecca and Megan breaking off as a duo after Jessica retired to raise a family.

@@slowbluesmaster Interesting that you mention War Pigs in a thread on Larkin Poe. The Lovells have recorded A War Pigs cover in their living room with Rebecca doubling on kick drum. They bring this song to life with no session musicians. In fact, Rebecca plays some ten different instruments, and the Lovells have made their last two recordings playing nearly all the parts with no session players. ruclips.net/video/Vj4SJolBPt0/видео.html I love First Aid Kit. These are talented sisters with integrity and musical subtlety. All of us have heard them on the radio for many years. You won't hear Larkin Poe on the air ever. First Aid Kit has enjoyed much more commercial success, but no one familiar with both groups would seriously argue that Klara and Johanna inhabit the same musical peak as Megan and Rebecca. Both pairs of sisters seem to have integrity and independence. Some things are hard to understand.

Brilliant. I'm personally taken in by their positivity as performers. My personal favourite "bed-room" tracks are 'Running with the devil' and 'The Thrill is Gone' (but many of them are really good), and as for their stage performances "Peach Music Festival" is decent video and sound (even though i think Rebecca has a sinus infection). On stage they occasionally make a call-response thing where Meghan mimics the voice of Rebecca on the lap-steel. Those are the golden moments :-)

    • @westmus

They have the call-response thing going in the end of one of my personal favorit live videos with the ladies: ruclips.net/video/YpDYVx7bB1k/видео.html

    • @Rapatacoosh
      @Rapatacoosh 4 года назад

@@westmus your link made me realize that the call response- thing is more credited to their showmanship, than their virtuosity/improvisation skills (I have just revisited a lot of their concert stuff on You Tube). They may have started as improvisation, but they have clearly been rehearsed and improved upon later. Very urgent: This is not a negative critique of their performance, merely an adjustment of my perception :-) You can see for yourself if you check out the "God closes a door" bit from their "Peach music festival" video (set list in the video description). I still like the girls very much and have a burning wish to see them live.

    Ok , I'll say it .
You should check out the Lovell Sisters , with Three part harmony , featuring Fiddle , dobro, and mandolin . They started as pure Bluegrass , but had already moved sideways into Amercana by the tail end of that line up .
When Megan went electric , she didn't look back . But during '10-'12 Rebecca was switching back and forth between Mando and guitar, even in the same set . There is some youtube out there with the rather unique combination of duet of Mandolin and Steel Guitar .
Rebecca is a much better instrumentalist on Mandolin . But she has frequently explained in interviews that when she plays mando , she Really plays mando , to where it distracts her from singing .
