You're dropping some serious knowledge here. Once I began learning guitar, i basically overnight STOPPED saying bands "sucked", etc. and began saying "they're not for me" because i began to understand how difficult it is to just play a guitar. Not even considering everything else involved (songwriting, performance, etc.) A lot of "music fans" need to watch this video. Peace...
Exactly! It's possible to appreciate skill and talent even if the particular sound doesn't appeal. I try to apply this attitude in other areas as well. I think that an awful lot of that comes from people not realizing the effort that others are making and so not appreciating it. We're generally not trained to notice such things.
The public can be over critical most of which can be written off as misdirected ego as they have never put themselves in a position to actually play to an audience or put themselves out there in general.
There are bands i really dislike, doesn't mean i take the time to go on their youtube videos or comment on blabbermouth about how much they suck. That behavior is a sign of insecurity.
I love them and Robert Plant loves them, I love Josh's style, real retro hippie, they are tight...I see no problem and haters will be stupid haters. Their LOSS.
@@wandajames143 - Look up Plant's interview here on RUclips, the interviewer asks him if he heard any new bands that he thinks are worth looking at and PLANT tells the interviewer about GVF and states that he thinks they are great and talking about Josh's voice, he says laughingly "He borrowed that voice from someone I know and he is great and is well worth looking out for"! Plant thinks they are the best and of the class of original great rock!
K M First off this is old hat. Gvf, have come and gone. Robert Plant Called Out Greta Van Fleet for Not Admitting Zeppelin Influence. “I hate him," Plant joked to The Project Exclusive before adding regarding Kiszka's voice. "And he borrowed it from somebody I know very well. But what are you going to do? It's okay." That’s far from saying they are great 😂 Plant was then asked if he had ever met Greta Van Fleet or if Kiszka had tried to meet him. "No, I mean, at least he's got a bit of star 'cause he says he based his whole style on Aerosmith," Plant said while scoffing and rolling his eyes. This is classic Plant cutting on them. He call them “Led Zeppelin 1” haha. He also said the little singer said he got everything from Aerosmith. Plant NEVER said , he’s great and well worth looking out for! 😂 Also he never said he thinks they’re the best and of the class of original great rock. You must be really stupid. The most he ever said about the singer is that “pretty good” for a cover band. I’m glad they’re gone.
@@wandajames143 You are entitled to your opinion, however, Robert Plant should be grateful a generation gave the old sound a comeback. You know, because no one else would for the fear of not being a success. It's not fit for the times we're witnessing. At least they gave it a chance. And whether you, and the other close minded individuals like or not, it made a very notable comeback. That's all that should matter. The fact that a new generation brought back an old sound that it's generation, and others, are inspired by, speaks volumes for the world of rock & roll. It opens up a new chapter for the genre. That is my opinion on Greta Van Fleet.
GVF has brought back that blues element that’s been missing from rock music for awhile now. Not only that, they aren’t afraid of what we all say about them... They just jam. Like them or not, and you have to love that kind of attitude. They may sound like Zep, but they are like nothing else we’ve seen.
Rock fans: "I wish someone would come along that played real rock and roll like I grew up listening to.." GVF comes around Rock fans: "they sound too much like someone i grew up listening to" Me: 😐
2021: I will remember that it was during the pandemic that I really fell in love with these guys. And they've gotten better. For any of those new to the band check out their recent Red Rocks and Candlelight Sessions concerts. Both at a totally other level. Brilliance and beauty personified _!_
These guys are a straight up rock band. You are right Fil, no auto tune pop infused sounds with beat boxes. Just the band with a mic, guitar and bass plugged in and playing with a real drummer like a real rock band would do! They are young and should have a long career ahead of them playing real music!
I saw Greta live in St. Louis back in August. They are an amazing live band as well as great song writers. RUclips critics couldn't hold Greta's guitar strap on their worst night!
These are the same people that kiss Vai's ballbag while he butchers Cobain songs. I don't hear Zeppelin at all. I hope GVF has a long successful career.
I don't think I could trash a band because I don't like their type of music. Case in point I love early Aerosmith but don't really care for later stuff. But that doesn't mean they suck as a band. By the way, I like these guys and hope they have many more years together.
I agree, Aerosmith is a great example actually, Overrated a bit but still a very good band, though not really my thing. BTW, I think the term "Great" is thrown around a bit too much, and I think Fil throws the term "top bands" around a bit too much as well but that's because I feel it mutes the effectiveness of using those terms. Its relative though and just a language thing.
If you think arguing about religion or politics is bad try telling someone their favorite band is garbage. You are no only insulting the band but you are insulting them. Your music is a personal choice that you have an emotional connection to. You might as well tell them they are stupid and ugly, get about the same reaction. I loved Fil's take on this subject. I noticed right away when I started watching this channel how Fil focuses on the positive things.
I love that during their songs I can hear and appreciate the talent of each band member -they seem so well balanced to me in every way. I am so excited to watch their journey. I have never cared for rock music, I certainly do after discovering Greta Van Fleet
I enjoyed this performance on Saturday Night Live. At the time I think what most impressed me was the total lack of inhibition on the singer's part. He was doing something that I'd never heard in a live performance, in front of an audience, broadcast to millions on TV, and understood to be recorded so that it could be watched over and over. Yet he was singing as though he were in the middle of the ocean, for his own pleasure. That's what made it great for me.
Fil, I think that's a fair, balanced review. Enjoyed your rant about critics tremendously! I'm 52, been playing in bands for years, and I have high hopes for these guys. A cool, rootsy vibe and damn does the kid have some pipes. Keep up the good work.
There still are many, many great rock bands touring and performing. They just don't make it onto the big labels anymore. Without big label support, there is very little promotion invested in these bands.
GVF haters drive me nuts! They always have the same answer as to why they can't stand GVF. I personally love them and am so excited to see where their career takes them next! Great analysis Fil!
Me.too!! Most haters "They sound too much like Led Zeppelin".... then those very same haters in the next sentence "There is no good music or rock and roll any more"! Ay yi yi...
Good X_Charlie Well, half of their first two albums anyways. But that hypocrisy is what makes the whole “they’re ripping off Zeppelin” argument infuriating. People who say that obviously don’t know shit about Led Zeppelin.
Phil, the bass player Sam is playing keys and bass pedals with his feet at the same time. That's why he performs in bare feet most of the time, so he can feel the pedals. That in of itself is pretty amazing talent. The bass mix is just fine on my system. He's a very good bass player.
Just felt I needed to address this...hes playing bass with his feet on the organ. Sound engineer probably didn't address it sonically to cover both rolls
I'm not a big fan of watching videos of other people watching videos, but I make an exception in your case because you actually know what you are talking about. This video is bang-on...on so many levels. It should be required viewing for every music fan, singer, musician, producer, and music industry executive. Your comments on the state of the current industry with all the autotuning, lip-syncing, and canned backing tracks are so true. I would rather watch warts-and-all performances than airbrushed performances any day. Thank you for putting into words what I've been thinking for years. I'm just a music fan...a fan of real music.
I play bass, for enjoyment, so not a professional, listened to bands for over 35 years live. I don't think you necessarily need to play at a high level to have opinion if a band is off Vocally or musically one night. If something sounds too near the record it's probably not live. The great thing about live performances is the organic and fresh nature of it. Regarding Greta, I think they are an excellent band with a raw feel which I love. The singers power is unbelievable, whether you like his tone is a matter of opinion, you don't have to listen if you don't like it.
Yeah everyones opinion is fine, and a lot of non musicians will be able to spot a bad performance. But for me, starting a channel to broadcast your own critique to the masses, when the critic has no ability or comprehension of what their watching, is ridiculous! 😂
The bass is foot pedal keys. I have played bass professionally for many years. I saw this band live in Seattle. The vocal performance was by far the best I've ever seen live. The whole band is amazing. Having had that experience, I cannot explain or convince anyone of how good these musicians are live. They are truly amazing and a wonder to watch.
@@bruce369able I saw GVF at BluesFest in Ottawa, they opened for Foo Fighters. I enjoyed GVF's set much more, because FF are just too "loud," in that their playing generally lacks accents and dynamics. FF are very talented musicians--I have loads of respect for Dave Grohl--and have some good songs, but the sheer noise is exhausting after a while (TO ME, your opinion may differ) so I left before the end to avoid the rush. GVF has a more "organic" sound.
I saw them live in DC at the Anthem before i had ever heard a song by them. Totally engaging from the first note to the last. Fan for life! Excellent!!!!!!
I just love this band!!! Their music takes me back to a special place, in my 80s teenaged life, just chilling around a little campfire, passing around a little j, and a little bottle of vino, and a whole lotta peace, love and rock n roll!! Geesh , do I miss those days!!!
I love these guys Fil, I was born in 1960 and I'm a guitarist. I'm a serious Led Zeppelin fan, and have covered their music for several decades. Although there are certain aspects of Greta Van Fleet that reminds me of Led Zeppelin, they are certainly not a Zeppelin clone (or even close). They are absolutely a band to and of themselves, thank you for your elegantly put words regarding the negative comment you received about this band, you handled that quite nicely!
Yeah...there are a few things that are very reminiscent of zeppelin. The vocals, the riffs, the posturing, the drums, the look, the songs....other than that they are completely original.
An English friend of mine who I used to work with used to live in the US he moved back to England with his wife and kids for my birthday he bought me an acoustic electric Washburn guitar I'm still learning I'm not the greatest guitar player but I'm learning and I would love to learn how to play the blues I love everything from Motown to reggae to hard Rock to r&b
3:55... To answer the bass question, I just watched a RUclips interview -- _Rig Rundown Greta Van Fleet [2021]_ -- with first Jake and then Sam talking in detail about their equipment and performance choices etc. Toward the end of the video, Sam demonstrates how he plays the bass notes with his feet when he's at the organ. They actually really do a lot of work and tinkering with their equipment to get similar sounds live to their studio output. Pretty fascinating interview --: even for someone like me who can't follow all of it.
Atari-Dude 1 ha ha, !! yea "synchro" pop- Ariaina Grande etc, ha!! these guys are ok, being young in a world of "pop" music- what a fresh sound, let them GROW, DEVOLOP, - tune is just fine, typicall bar band from gigging band from years ago- the "kids are alright " !!
Love the voice, especially the higher notes. Leader singer has a brilliant voice. Something the rest of us could never reach not even with a pair of house bricks. The entire band work so well together as unit. Trouble with being live is you get one crack at it unlike in a studio where a song can be done a dozen times and then a piece from each take spliced together as one take. Another great video posted, well done Fil.
I grew up on bands from the 70s and 80s. Half of em were compared to Zeppelin. But remember Zeppelin was notorious for ripping off other bands. Lol. These guys are a good band. And I’m a big Led Zeppelin fan.
M. O.G. I think there’s a difference between promoting violence, and using violence as a storytelling device. It’s the reason why you can watch a movie like “Goodfellas” and understand that just because violence is present, it doesn’t mean it’s getting promoted. They tell you a story about where they came from. Just like the old bluesmen who discussed the garbage pits they came from. If you don’t wanna listen to their lives, then don’t listen. Now, I’m under no illusion that all gangsta rappers are non-criminals, but don’t slag a whole genre because it doesn’t conform to your tastes. And I’m not even big into rap.
M. O.G. Don’t understand how rock fans talk shit about rap for talking about violence, since rock is so full of lyrics about drug, violence, drinking, parting hard etc.
@@bensagal-morris8072 Original gangsta rap was just supposed to be an honest representation of reality in the hood. It's a totally valid and important artform. (And I personally love it) The problem is that when gangsta rap first showed up, a record exec named Lyor Cohen had also just heavily invested in the first privatized/for profit prisons. He came up with the bright idea to make gangsta rap mainstream - which would promote violence and crime in the culture - which would help fill up those private prisons. Lyor Cohen stopped signing any rappers that weren't gangsta rappers and he got rich selling the records and cashed in on the resulting crime wave. Double profits. Truly sick. ..and Lyor was so sick that he even straight up told some of his bigger artists at the time that this was his plan. They were shocked and horrified. Saying that gangsta rap "promotes violence" is kind of an old man thing to say. I get that. ...but it's technically true. From Lyor's point of view, promoting violence was literally the entire point. He's the one who should get all the hate though, not the actual artists. Most of them had absolutely no idea that they were being used like that.
Very classy clapback. I appreciate you and the quality content you provide. Keep rocking! GVF is quite an exciting band, I must say. Great affinity for that classic blues-rock sound.
THANK YOU! When one hasn't performed live, they can't possibly grasp all the elements that go in to it and how HARD it can be. These guys are fantastic musicians and look at how much FUN they are having. They aren't just playing and singing. They feel this and when I hear them I feel what they feel. Their music is pure magic to me.
I’ve always thought that the physical appearance of a band can affect the way someone hears their music also. I’ve read negative comments about GVF that appears to attack the way the singer looks, hair style, etc. I am affected by a band’s physical appearance and style but in the end it is their music that either wins me over or it doesn’t.
I see it from a different perspective. To me, it seems like he is intentionally being defiant. Like people at the record label or in management told them to look good while going on national television. He said, “gotcha.” And then as a joke went out looking like a Hobbit to evoke more Led Zeppelin gossip. I think it’s so hot. Defiance is Rock and Roll. It doesn’t matter what he comes out wearing. He is so good looking and such a great vocalist, what he wears isn’t important. I’ve seen him come out with feathers around his neck and sparkle slippers. Still hot. I know that it can be irritating to other men that his lack of concern for appearance can actually make him more appealing to women. It is what it is.
@@alternativetentacles1760 I have to admit,i love all the guys, and they are all real HOTTIES! But Josh is my favorite, and he is so good looking, he can pull off that look!
Fil, I love when You get fire up about something as in this video. you got your point across in a nice way. two thumbs up! this is the first time hearing (Greta Van Fleet) you gave a great analysis. thanks for this one Fil.
I've loved to see how far they've come over the last couple of years, they are right now on an amazing ride and I wish them complete success because they are doing something that we don't see and hear much anymore!Great job Fil !!
I’ve ran live sound for 40 years and never had to mix in vocal tracks. However mixing in key tracks, sound bytes, and synth bass is common with small touring groups and it does add to the sound. With GVF I would prefer bass guitar with guest keyboards or even a key track. That’s my 2 cents. Much respect for these guys and look forward to more great music. Other groups that use auto tune sound like a horn honking the syllables.
They have something ~ that is for sure. I am not even a huge fan of this type of music and I am addicted. His voice is amazingly different and he is fun to watch.
Hi Fil . Really enjoyed this episode. My first concert was Jimi Hendrix in Berkeley when I was 15. (Very liberal parents). Being in the San Francisco Bay Area , we had quite a few venues to see live music. I saw the Faces (my favorite live band), Who, Zeppelin, Robin Trower, Slade, Black Sabbath, David Bowie,Jeff Beck, Wishbone Ash, Fleetwood Mac (pre Lindsey and Stevie Nicks) etc. Greta Van Fleet's music gives me the same feeling from back then. It's so cool to see a band having fun playing their music. So what if they miss a note or muff a chord. It's real. If you have a chance, look for the video of them playing "Highway Tune" at Cochella last year. They have a guitar malfunction, and as the guitar tech work on the problem, the bass player steps in and plays a ripping solo. THAT'S professional musicanship !
I love how the singer can’t keep from breaking into a smile- these kids are jacked with excitement. Do they sound like Led Zeppelin, yeah maybe..but to sound like one of the best bands in history you’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning and practice. Lol
Thank you for this.... I really like how you said it’s a “real performance” there are subtle imperfections. I really enjoy watching this band and they are on my Vevo/You Tube play list. Emotionally this band makes me happy! I hope Josh is ok, as they recently suspended their tour, he was ill.
I have got to agree 100%. Its really refreshing just to see a band that actually plays an instrument. Rather than just something that has been programmed out of a computer. Modern music is not talent if you do nothing but push a button on a computer.
Voice is great but I do prefer his lower register At times if he overuses belting the notes out it can become shrill. You can hear it in his throat when not clear. When he does the classic "Plant" scream and nails it it takes me back to greatness
Thank you Fil, I love your rant! I saw Greta van Fleet in Sydney just after this SNL performance (and just before Josh got sick).. Their gig was awesome!! One of the most energetic and exciting I've been to in a long time, with lots of improvisation and extended guitar solos. Josh was amazing that night. Like you say every band has good days and bad days when playing live... Rock On !!
The unique thing about The Zep was that Jimmy and Bonzo were locked rather than the baseline driving the song wouldn't you agree? This is clearly seen in the sheet music of their songs..
GVF are a very talented group. What's wrong with sounding like Zepplin? Hell I wish I could. Like sounding like one of the greatest bands of all time is a bad thing. At least they don't sound like Five Finger Death Punch. If a young group came out and had the energy and feel of Skynyrd or early Van Halen would people complain about it? I think a tour with them and Black Crowes would be awesome, You know if the Robinson bros could get it together
@@Jimbo_Bluff There are other songs that are much more Plant-esh so to speak. This one is more Who based musically. he doesn't sound like Daltery but the music and vocal stylings are similar
I love them. Before SNL I didn’t know who they were. I usually fast forward through the musical acts but I was riveted that night. To me they had charisma and, of course, that old time blues rock sound.
Fil, I always enjoy your analyses and I love how you seem to enjoy all music. I’ve seen you profile so many artists whom I love but who no longer receive much mainstream attention: Gordon Lightfoot, Roy Clark, Jim Stafford, Jim Croce and on and on. You are a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you for your work. And what you were saying about this particular performance, that it was live and without the demon auto tune and therefore could be a bit off, is so true. I had never heard of this group before the SNL performance. I tuned in in time to catch this song and I was stunned. I thought “that chick Greta cannot sing and what’s up with all her weird tics?” I googled “her” and read critics and fan reviews. I then checked out other performances of theirs on RUclips and I am so glad I did! They now have a 60 yr old granny groupie in Texas. Again, thank you for being a positive presence on RUclips and thank you for all the knowledge you share.
Right on, brother! It's not a deal about who is the best, and who sucks. It's about the work that goes in and the years of practice and the nerve to get up and play in front of people.
GVF was recommended to me by at least two people I really respect, and both made the comparison to LZ, but honestly I'm not hearing it. I think these guys stand on their own. I like their vibe and the vocal makes me happy, but they're not nearly as heavy or intense as Zepplin to my old ears. Range aside, could anyone actually mistake this guy's singing for Plant? Glad you brought them forward, Fil. Hope they continue doing their thing for a long time.
*ahem* ruclips.net/video/UPkNxC6HCSw/видео.html LOL. However, with a bit of examination and thought, it's easy enough to account for this. It's true that Plant and Kiszka sound VERY similar in certain moments. It's also true that they sound noticeably different in other moments. So, someone familiar with Plant will recognize those similarities in the similar moments, while also noticing the differences in the other moments. Whether you think they "sound alike" depends on which moments you compare. Q.E.D.
His voice certainly stands out, that's for sure. I mean that in a good way. So many bands sound alike, but he has a very unique sound. I didn't really care for this group the first time I heard him, but they have started to grow on me the more I listen to them.
Very well spoken brother!!!! I am 44yrs old and have been playing bass since I was 11, and i absolutely love this band, in today's world of autotune ,prerecorded tracks and bubblegum bullshit pop, being compared to Led Zeppelin i think is not an insult but a great honor!! if hearing a young band play their own original music makes you think of one of, if not, the greatest rock n roll bands that ever was or will be, then i think that is fantastic. I hope these boys stand their ground and keep putting out more groovy ass tunes!!! on another note, Phil if you have time check out my band, Dog Day Sunrise. there's some tracks on youtube, start with the song Leviathon
I think most people who give a thumb down, don't know what they are talking about. But you do it because you are an experienced musician, who has the right to judge. And the way you do that, is: an expert opinion with always a positive judgement. That's is what I need, positivity, and I presume many people with me. And about Greta van Fleet: they are giving me the feeling back, why I began to like popmusic about fifty years ago.
I agree with your thoughts. When I first saw them it was under the idea that they were a Led Zep wannabe band. I unfairly judged them because of that. Matter of fact that would be unfair all the way around to say that they stand up to Zep. We as consumers of music need to give every band there fair of growing up and becoming who they are. I am an older guy who grew up with Zeppelin. I appreciate every genre of music because I love music. If I can give these guys a chance I will think that everyone should do the same. These guys are the start of the new era of rock. Let them grow. Thanks, Fil another great video about why we need these groups.
You make such an important point here... Whether you like or not like a band (or, BTW, pretty much WHATEVER) doesn't mean they're not good. LOVED this. I'm passionate about photography and it's the very same thing... And the goal, on an educational website I used to write for, was to get people to say "What a beauty, this photo that I don't like!". And it's exactly what you say: personal taste shouldn't have any place in "analysis" of whatever "art form". And I LOVED your explanations about the whole thing of "analysis" and how the personal "proficiency" determines what you actually can, or can't, detect and perceive, I just LOVED this video and your analysis and your "rant". And I share every single word of it.
Thanks for ur analysis, we need to support these young men and not tear them down. I’m in my 50’s and I’m excited to see them. I’m a hard core Zep fan and anything that brings young folks to good old rock and roll is very exciting to me! Thanks again, I always enjoy ur videos
Spot on dude, spot on. I come from a family of musicians, and I’ve played guitar since 11, wrote my own lyrics and songs, and can sing fairly well. I’m impressed by these young men. So much so I bought both their albums. It’s refreshing to see young people get into rock again and play instruments. Most music today is synthesized garbage. I hope these guys have years of success.
So refreshing to hear a band that is just rock on talented. These young guys are amazing. I enjoy their music so much. I hope they have many years of success.
As always, great analysis Fil. My 15 year old daughter found Greta Van Fleet and loves it. I played Zeppelin for her and now shes loves both, especially John Bonham as shes learning drums. I love what Greta are doing. They are bringing great rock to a new generation. Are they Led Zeppelin? Of course not. I hate the comparison. Greta have two albums, let's see how they fare in 30 years. In the meantime, enjoy...or not. I see you got 2 thumbs down for this video. Really? As a great poet once said "haters gonna hate". They must have sad lives. Keep it up Fil, love your videos.
The thing I like about your analysis is the honest objectivity. I have watched many of your videos and they all share that same quality. Keep up the good work.
🤦🏻♀️ I think I know exactly who the mr. crabby pants is. 1. Josh is at the cusp of a vocal injury that has stopped their tour. they have now taken a needed rest. I think these boys have a strong work ethic and a joy that is refreshing.
I have them a listen a while back and didn’t care for them that much but this performance makes me want to check them out again! Love the energy and his wild voice
I watched Saturday night live only because Greta van fleet was guest. Dont matter what the haters think these guys are talented all around . Great reaction glad I'm a subscriber.
Right on! Frank V. i was glued to the set! they sang 2 songs and i gave them a standing "O", just like they got on Jimi Fallon's only i was louder ,lol! I love these guys, i don't have a professional ear, but i i know good music when i hear it,i have been around the best musicians in the business, in the 60's and early to mid 70's, it make me tear up when i read some of the HORRIBLE comments that ppl write, like Fil said, these ppl don't even sing or play, but yet they are arm chair critics, about the best band that has come to the rock scene and HOW REFRESHING, It is, i'm getting emotional, tears running down my face... Rant over!
Fil. Thank you for doing an analysis of Greta Van Fleet. I had never heard of them. And now I'm obsessed. These boys are so talented. And they are so humble in their interviews and so smart!. Thanks again for featuring them in a vIdeo. 😀
Fil, what Journey song did you change the key on so it was in your "wheelhouse" vocally? I wish more people would do that seeing as in the states, you won't get a gig now if the booking agent can't guarantee X amount of people will follow the band. I left the live scene and went into the Christian scene where I played some of the biggest gigs of my life. But they were so far and few between and I was compromising what I wanted to play. I am a Christian but I'm a metal/hard rock guy musically. I was playing with a great band of friends being the band behind an artist named Deb K. She has a site I believer it's called Deb K Music. Debbie Krauladis is her name and she was third runner up for a Dove Award which is the Christian Equivalent of a Grammy. Very low voice and everything we did was in drop D flat or B flat [Lovely keys to play on guitar. If I used a capo, I sounded like I was playing a mandolin!] Her biggest song was one she used to play when she also ran for political office. She actually won her election too. It was called "Leap of Faith," which was her idea of running as a candidate. I had just had a neck surgery that went horribly wrong when she asked me to play at the Allstate Arena in the state of Illinois which used to be the Rosemont Horizon and the last time I was there as to see Judas Priest! Glenn Beck of FOX at the time was the MC. Maybe a nice man, but I just didn't get him but he is huge still in the states. I had to pass because I was in a hard collar and tis has three acoustic parts and I already had played it several times for her by myself with back up singers and a jimbaay. I hope you have the time to track this down. This girl, while not our cup of tea, has a beautiful and unique voice for a woman. She also is a on call host for the American TV show "Extra," which is on NBC. She's an on air talent who has interviewed people like Celine Dion, Madonna, the list is too exhaustive. But the crazy part is she's better singer than many of the people she's interviewed and no one will ever know. She still looks fantastic and I met her about her about 20 years ago. Apparently as a late teenager/early twenties she was also third runner up for Miss Illinois. Had she one that, she would have went on for Miss America then Miss Universe. Crazy interesting life and so humble, married to as great guy and now has young adult kids but still looks like shes got what it takes. Love people like that. It's not a false humility with her. She is as genuine as it gets as is her husband Tim. ROCK!
Sir I have to say that this analysis, this dialogue you've given explaining how emotions affect people is so spot on and so damn refreshing to hear I can't give you enough kudos for stating as much. I personally really appreciate this band, they are very young and they are from.what I've seen thus far from them really adept at their craft. Setting aside how much I love their sound, I can honestly appreciate their playing real instruments and playing them really well. As you made mention of so many critique bands like this without any having any real basis of said critique other than their "say so" Just like you mentioned, what experience do you have that can coincide with your critique? Have you been on this level of playing music? Do you truly know what it all entails to be on the road day after day, night after night on stage, performance after performance. Do you have any real understanding of what level you have to be on to be able to pull it off at the level that Greta Van Fleet, for example is doing? I just want to say I really appreciate your in depth analysis, it is really refreshing and as you mentioned it is so damn good to see real musicians playing real.music, live!!! Thank.you very much!!!
This group is reminiscent of the groups of the 60's and 70's and I appreciate that they are trying to give us real music. And the lead singer does take chances, and that can cause an occasional hiccup, but overall they may give us a lot of great music over the years. Fil, I appreciate your advice on trying not to get into the fight or flight mode over opinions. That is the adult way to be, and most of us have to work at it now and again. It helps to hear it explained that way!
You need to be flexible with your opinion especially when a band plays live. They are not going to sound exactly like the CD. Well said Fil. Watch a RUclips video of these young guys playing live and you will see they are talented and put on a great show. There is a reason why they are on the stage.
I've watched various footage of this band both live and video versions of their material while collectively they have that bluesy rockish Zepellin undertone my first thought was they are at staying true to that genre of rock and they obviously enjoy playing it. They will mature and expand their sound over time and will continue to develop into a great band. The band "Heart" developed their chops covering actual Zepellin songs around the Seattle area. These guys are on their way it'll be interesting in a good way watching these guys over the coming years.
Music is an art form. One man's picasso is another man's turd on a wall. Back in the 70's I absolutely hated punk rock. I couldn't even understand why or how they got record deals.....however I have come to appreciate the genre and what they contributed to music in general.
You speak for so many musicians who can and do actually play live in concert. People like yourself are bringing back integrity to the music business. We go to concerts to hear the artist perform, mistakes included. That's the beauty of seeing a band live. Well said !!
I grew up in Frankenmuth Michigan I'm 30 years older than these kids they used to play at parties my friends and i would have just to get experience you could tell even then how talented they were but never thought they would get so big so fast. Well done boys
What I find disappointing and strange is how there is so much hate on , of all places, RUclips. Music is communal to me, the one thing everyone can unite and share. Music has no pulling apart; it bring us together, and doesn’t even need language. It is beyond that. The lyrics set to music add another dimension. Songs take a story and turn that story into something more. Thanks for another great session.
Ive watched you review a lot of bands/musicians and i gotta say i admire you for always being fair to the artist you are talking about .The world needs more people like you. I personally like this band .I just watched your review on Richard Benson and i thought the way you reviewed him was very kind. Ive not subscribed yet , but im about to.
I think you did a great job explaining what's going on! A true musician would never criticize a fellow musician knowing how much practice it takes to get on the level of playing a big time gig or a small time gig! I saw where some said they are not original! Well what is original? Some say they are copying Led Zeppelin or sound like a 80s hair band! Face it these young guys are very good musicians and they have climbed to the top very fast maybe too fast! I do believe as time goes by we are going to see so much growth in their sound! Most bands take many years to get this lucky and believe me it's by luck any band makes it! It's always about the music first, fame is a side effect of lots of luck second!! Let's just enjoy watching the growth of this band! I'm 61 years old and have played guitar over 50 years and have been in many bands and I say more power to these young guys! ROCK ON
A true musician would never criticize a fellow musician? How exactly do you think bands breakup on a daily basis? James Brown, Charles Mingus for example used to threaten their musicians if they made the slightest mistake. I agree live and let live, there are subjective perspectives but also objective ones to be made.
I just got this analysis, Fil, and I like your approach. You make very insightful comments about going from the live sound to TV. You may not know this one additional point: The sound system (soundboard to audience, soundboard to TV) is notoriously poor for Saturday Night Live. SNL musical guest history is littered with off performances. That being said, GVF seemed a bit nervous and off for their first song, and I think you are correct - not having a bass tied in to the drummer threw them off a bit too for the 2nd You're the One. I personally know this - when the guys took off from part of their European tour to rest for Josh's voice, they came back to play fantastic live shows in the US in June-Aug. The show I saw had 6 bands in a special event, and GVF had everybody out of their seats the entire set (I was on the floor). Having seen concerts for almost 40 years, my opinion is they have terrific energy, enthusiasm, and enough catchy hooks to give them time to develop more. The next two or three albums will tell the tale. Thanks for doing this review.
One of the most toxic leaders in the hate against GVF is Fantano. Dude can't even play music himself yet believes he's "qualified" somehow to question real musicians.
Thanks so much, Fil. A while back I watched this negative reaction video and came away a little dismayed because I couldn't hear all the terribleness being claimed. I thought I must have a defective ear somehow because I couldn't hear the off notes. Good to hear your positive analysis
Greta Van Fleet is good . I'm an old Zeppelin freak and I just think it's great to see a real band playing that style of music . My music has definite flavors of my favorite bands for sure. Your influences will shine thu . Just make it your own . PEACE
I keep coming back to this video, Josh's voice is so spot on here, but I do have a question for Fil. What do you think of Josh's wardrobe? And would you have any advice for him?
Love for GVF, from a few miles away in Vassar MIchigan. Thank God and GVF for the resurrection of what R&R is really all about, creating a future out of the past.
What? 2019 and no autotune???? Raw rock & roll, GVF is just great!! Excellent analysis!!
👍
They do use some auto tune, it's been covered in other videos.
Although they use it, it's just for that tighter sound on albums 🤙🏼
They are sick asf
@@sabotagedali6006 Every single band from the 60s onwards that has put out something in the last 15 years has used autotune/pitch correction
"Pay no attention to what the critics say. A statue has never been erected in honor of a critic." - Jean Sibelius
Amen!
Michael, i knew Jean Sibelius......GVF are no Jean Sibelius.
What about Marx? 😂
Ive erected statues of critics in the privacy of my own home. Speak for yourself
Nah its normally racist slave owners
You're dropping some serious knowledge here. Once I began learning guitar, i basically overnight STOPPED saying bands "sucked", etc. and began saying "they're not for me" because i began to understand how difficult it is to just play a guitar. Not even considering everything else involved (songwriting, performance, etc.) A lot of "music fans" need to watch this video. Peace...
Thanks!
See this is a very honest truth. People don’t have the slightest clue what it takes to be a professional musician and have a successful band with fans
There are bands i really dislike, doesn't mean i take the time to go on their youtube videos or comment on blabbermouth about how much they suck. That behavior is a sign of insecurity.
Greta Van Fleet is a breath of fresh air. They don't need defending, they need more airplay.
I'm 65 and i Love these Guys 👍
I agree with you 💯
I love them and Robert Plant loves them, I love Josh's style, real retro hippie, they are tight...I see no problem and haters will be stupid haters. Their LOSS.
Robert Plant “loves them”? Please send me proof
It's okay." That’s far from saying they are great 😂
Plant was then asked if he had ever met Greta Van Fleet or if Kiszka had tried to meet him.
Plant has always seemed unimpressed by the copycats
Rock fans: "I wish someone would come along that played real rock and roll like I grew up listening to.."
GVF comes around
Rock fans: "they sound too much like someone i grew up listening to"
Me: 😐
and thats the exact problem
Blackberry Smoke, real music...lol
Good god man this is painfully true 😭😂
I Wish an ORIGINAL band
2021: I will remember that it was during the pandemic that I really fell in love with these guys. And they've gotten better. For any of those new to the band check out their recent Red Rocks and Candlelight Sessions concerts. Both at a totally other level. Brilliance and beauty personified _!_
These guys are a straight up rock band. You are right Fil, no auto tune pop infused sounds with beat boxes. Just the band with a mic, guitar and bass plugged in and playing with a real drummer like a real rock band would do! They are young and should have a long career ahead of them playing real music!
👍
Great to see and hear a young band writing their own songs and playing actual instruments. Wishing them the best.
All the guys play multiple instruments an not a one has had a lesson. Amazing!!!
I saw Greta live in St. Louis back in August. They are an amazing live band as well as great song writers. RUclips critics couldn't hold Greta's guitar strap on their worst night!
Cool!
These are the same people that kiss Vai's ballbag while he butchers Cobain songs. I don't hear Zeppelin at all. I hope GVF has a long successful career.
I’m 55 and I want to go see them!!!
I don't think I could trash a band because I don't like their type of music. Case in point I love early Aerosmith but don't really care for later stuff. But that doesn't mean they suck as a band. By the way, I like these guys and hope they have many more years together.
👍
I agree, Aerosmith is a great example actually, Overrated a bit but still a very good band, though not really my thing. BTW, I think the term "Great" is thrown around a bit too much, and I think Fil throws the term "top bands" around a bit too much as well but that's because I feel it mutes the effectiveness of using those terms. Its relative though and just a language thing.
That’s because old Aerosmith was good and their later stuff sucked.
Amen brotha!
Totally agree, I recently pulled out my old record collection and found "Get your Wings" and cant stop listing to it .
Yes, because Fil is a positive person, and always sees THE GOOD in everyone and everything...
Thanks Max!
he does focus on positive and he always has something positive to say and he has passion...I love that!
This is so true!!! especially when a band/artist get someone through a hard time like GVF for me.
Watching Fil almost makes me wish I were female so I could have a proper crush on him. He's good people.
Thanks Dan!
Check out Simo. Cool throwback rock sound only JD Simo is a world class guitarist. ruclips.net/video/L-BmvH3kNs4/видео.html
Agreed!, Dan!
Does the kid have some pipes? Sounded like bagpipes!

I think Greta Van Fleet is great, they are doing rock when rock really isnt much of a thing anymore in the mainstream.
The mainstream no longer exists
👍
John B yea, I'm old, but they, do quite well for 20's in 2019, would like to catch a show
There still are many, many great rock bands touring and performing. They just don't make it onto the big labels anymore. Without big label support, there is very little promotion invested in these bands.
John B yea, bring it back, next generation, kinda like the "kids" now !!
GVF haters drive me nuts! They always have the same answer as to why they can't stand GVF. I personally love them and am so excited to see where their career takes them next! Great analysis Fil!
Thanks Tara!
Atta....girl?
Me.too!! Most haters "They sound too much like Led Zeppelin".... then those very same haters in the next sentence "There is no good music or rock and roll any more"! Ay yi yi...
Esp. considering that Zeppelin's first two records are essentially uncredited blues covers.
👍
Just felt I needed to address this...hes playing bass with his feet on the organ. Sound engineer probably didn't address it sonically to cover both rolls
Yeah it's a shame!
Spot on ...
PS you're spot on love the imperfections in performances
It's the rawness and spontaneity that makes music deciding

I'm not a big fan of watching videos of other people watching videos, but I make an exception in your case because you actually know what you are talking about. This video is bang-on...on so many levels. It should be required viewing for every music fan, singer, musician, producer, and music industry executive. Your comments on the state of the current industry with all the autotuning, lip-syncing, and canned backing tracks are so true. I would rather watch warts-and-all performances than airbrushed performances any day. Thank you for putting into words what I've been thinking for years. I'm just a music fan...a fan of real music.
Thanks Ian! No problem! ☺
I hope I could get to see them someday!
Wine coolers.
I think GVF is the perfect band for me. I love 70's rock and I always want more of what I love.
Thanks Wade!
Yeah...there are a few things that are very reminiscent of zeppelin. The vocals, the riffs, the posturing, the drums, the look, the songs....other than that they are completely original.

All music is good. There is an audience for everything. Music is art. It isn't a competition.

You have so much integrity. Thats why I subscribe. Thank you!
Thanks Bob!
I agree. I've been running into this channel and I really dig it, so I subscribed. You're the first person I've agreed with on GVF.
I grew up on bands from the 70s and 80s. Half of em were compared to Zeppelin. But remember Zeppelin was notorious for ripping off other bands. Lol. These guys are a good band. And I’m a big Led Zeppelin fan.
I wasn't a Zeppelin fan but I'm a Who fan and the Who are one of their influences.
better to have a zep sounding modern band than have gangsta rap promoting violence
Cliche Guevara I had no idea about that. That is awful for the artists involved.
I agree , or worse yet is this pop crap that is out there now
Fil, you definitely are NOT rubbish, kind sir. Keep sharing your passion for music...
Haha thanks!
Very classy clapback. I appreciate you and the quality content you provide. Keep rocking!
GVF is quite an exciting band, I must say. Great affinity for that classic blues-rock sound.
So nice to see musicians actually writing and playing music again. No autotune, no samples, live. Good stuff.
Great to see young bands going old school rock n roll. Appreciate your analysis and comment on the haters.
Yeah back in the day it really was about the music as you'd only ever hear it on the radio with no images!
I like Josh's hair!
@@alternativetentacles1760 I have to admit,i love all the guys, and they are all real HOTTIES! But Josh is my favorite, and he is so good looking, he can pull off that look!

Him Josh and Jake are twins
Haha cool!
I wish there were more young bands taking on yesterday's sounds and styles and blending their own thing into it. Great sounds.

That's a shame.
I have got to agree 100%. Its really refreshing just to see a band that actually plays an instrument. Rather than just something that has been programmed out of a computer. Modern music is not talent if you do nothing but push a button on a computer.

At times if he overuses belting the notes out it can
become shrill. You can hear it in his throat when not
clear.
When he does the classic "Plant" scream and nails it
it takes me back to greatness

Thank you Fil, I love your rant! I saw Greta van Fleet in Sydney just after this SNL performance (and just before Josh got sick).. Their gig was awesome!! One of the most energetic and exciting I've been to in a long time, with lots of improvisation and extended guitar solos. Josh was amazing that night. Like you say every band has good days and bad days when playing live... Rock On !!
The unique thing about The Zep was that Jimmy and Bonzo were locked rather than the baseline driving the song wouldn't you agree? This is clearly seen in the sheet music of their songs..
The reason I love your reaction videos is that YOU NEVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT ANYONE!
Noticed this a long time ago. You're a class act, Sir Fil!
Thanks again!

Haha cool! No problem!
I noticed that you were smiling when Josh was singing…. That’s the appeal. They make me smile with chills at times. Love them
Thanks so much for this an your other videos. I feel a real sense of generosity, transparency and insight behind them. Well done!
Thanks!
Right on, brother! It's not a deal about who is the best, and who sucks. It's about the work that goes in and the years of practice and the nerve to get up and play in front of people.
👍
GVF was recommended to me by at least two people I really respect, and both made the comparison to LZ, but honestly I'm not hearing it. I think these guys stand on their own. I like their vibe and the vocal makes me happy, but they're not nearly as heavy or intense as Zepplin to my old ears. Range aside, could anyone actually mistake this guy's singing for Plant? Glad you brought them forward, Fil. Hope they continue doing their thing for a long time.
👍
*ahem* ruclips.net/video/UPkNxC6HCSw/видео.html
LOL. Q.E.D.
I agree.
His voice certainly stands out, that's for sure. I mean that in a good way. So many bands sound alike, but he has a very unique sound.
I didn't really care for this group the first time I heard him, but they have started to grow on me the more I listen to them.
I'm 56..these guess are raw like the greats from the 70's . I always say "raw" is missing in today's sound, and these guys deliver. Fuckn great band
👍
Not sure if it was mentioned but when Sam plays keyboards he usually plays bass with pedals.
👍
Thanks Bill!
☺👍
I agree with your thoughts. When I first saw them it was under the idea that they were a Led Zep wannabe band. I unfairly judged them because of that. Matter of fact that would be unfair all the way around to say that they stand up to Zep. We as consumers of music need to give every band there fair of growing up and becoming who they are. I am an older guy who grew up with Zeppelin. I appreciate every genre of music because I love music. If I can give these guys a chance I will think that everyone should do the same. These guys are the start of the new era of rock. Let them grow. Thanks, Fil another great video about why we need these groups.
👍
Ditto🤘🏼
You make such an important point here... Whether you like or not like a band (or, BTW, pretty much WHATEVER) doesn't mean they're not good. LOVED this. I'm passionate about photography and it's the very same thing... And the goal, on an educational website I used to write for, was to get people to say "What a beauty, this photo that I don't like!". And it's exactly what you say: personal taste shouldn't have any place in "analysis" of whatever "art form". And I LOVED your explanations about the whole thing of "analysis" and how the personal "proficiency" determines what you actually can, or can't, detect and perceive,
I just LOVED this video and your analysis and your "rant". And I share every single word of it.
Thanks Davide!
Thanks for ur analysis, we need to support these young men and not tear them down. I’m in my 50’s and I’m excited to see them. I’m a hard core Zep fan and anything that brings young folks to good old rock and roll is very exciting to me! Thanks again, I always enjoy ur videos
Thanks!
👍
They do, because i have a lot of ppl that hate on me, same difference well said...
👍
The thing I like about your analysis is the honest objectivity. I have watched many of your videos and they all share that same quality. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
I watched their Rig Rundown on the Premier Guitar RUclips channel. The bass player uses bass pedals whilst he's playing keys.
👍
🤦🏻♀️ I think I know exactly who the mr. crabby pants is. 1. Josh is at the cusp of a vocal injury that has stopped their tour. they have now taken a needed rest. I think these boys have a strong work ethic and a joy that is refreshing.
👍
Yeah, you can hear it in his vocal control.
Well put!
Thanks Frank!
Right on! Frank V. i was glued to the set! they sang 2 songs and i gave them a standing "O", just like they got on Jimi Fallon's only i was louder ,lol!
He is playing the bass notes on the footpedals either on the organ or he has a Taurus Pedal under the organ.
ROCK!
Cool! It was Don't Stop Believin' ☺
I play guitar and I love these guys. I really like their sound and their style.
Love how they sound new and familiar at the same time.
You need to be flexible with your opinion especially when a band plays live. They are not going to sound exactly like the CD. Well said Fil. Watch a RUclips video of these young guys playing live and you will see they are talented and put on a great show. There is a reason why they are on the stage.
👍
Thanks Thomas!
☺
Ive watched you review a lot of bands/musicians and i gotta say i admire you for always being fair to the artist you are talking about .The world needs more people like you. I personally like this band .I just watched your review on Richard Benson and i thought the way you reviewed him was very kind. Ive not subscribed yet , but im about to.
Thanks!
ROCK ON
👍
You're such a nice guy, Fil and a true professional. And I love your original work as well.
Thanks Nancy!
Thanks so much, Fil. A while back I watched this negative reaction video and came away a little dismayed because I couldn't hear all the terribleness being claimed. I thought I must have a defective ear somehow because I couldn't hear the off notes. Good to hear your positive analysis
Thanks Jim!
Greta Van Fleet is good . I'm an old Zeppelin freak and I just think it's great to see a real band playing that style of music . My music has definite flavors of my favorite bands for sure. Your influences will shine thu . Just make it your own . PEACE
🤘
I keep coming back to this video, Josh's voice is so spot on here, but I do have a question for Fil. What do you think of Josh's wardrobe? And would you have any advice for him?
Haha I'm not expert! But long hair, black clothes and a few accessories is a good start!
That's really the only issue I have with these guys is their wardrobe, otherwise I think they're very talented almost as talented as you Fil.
@@pennsyltuckyden9823 😅
Love for GVF, from a few miles away in Vassar MIchigan. Thank God and GVF for the resurrection of what R&R is really all about, creating a future out of the past.
👍
