There is a lot of talent there for sure but I just can't seem to get into the band and it is mainly because I can't seem to get past the originality and authenticity thing. My problem not theirs though.
GVF is an outstanding. Progressive rock band. Josh has a fabulous voice and it is his instrument. All 4 of these young men play multiple instruments and write their music. Thank you for analyzing Josh. The music is often even better live and in concert.

I like GVF and you coverage of them since you don't fall into the LZ trap most people try to pigeonhole them into. I really liked the comments about singing since I'm starting to sing. I've carried psychological baggage with my voice from childhood, and unfortunately it's already transmitted to my daughters. But we can joke about it now, and your pitch monitoring software is much nicer than my choir teachers.

Great analysis Fil. Spot on as usual. Think this is older song. Their first hit” Highway Tune, was great, but they took so much heat because they were compared to Zepplin. They tried to break away with Broken Bell & Light My Love, Tears of Rain, which I think are good songs. I give them kudos for trying to keep rock alive. Think they are talented musicians, but this isn’t their best song for sure, but glad young people are giving them a listen. Thanks Fil!

You really do need to find your range, Then you will be able to go high or low with no difficulty. I find that range is good but more important is to be in Key maybe a little sharp or flat but cover that with vibrato. Thank you Fil!
Josh is still quite a young singer. He can hit high notes, in part, because of his voice, but also because of his age. As Josh ages, his voice will settle downward and won't continue to sound like this. As for his vocal skills, he's still very green. He can sing and typically hit pitch on notes, but his vibrato and control is rough with his technique and execution sometimes wobbly. He can't always perform the vocal gyrations perfectly, yet. He'll learn how to do it over time, but he's still in that learning process. In comparison, Robert Plant (who Josh is most compared to) hit the ground running with his technique, range and control almost fully formed upon joining Led Zeppelin. In comparison, Josh's vocal ideas are maybe 50% formed overall.
Agree, Robert Plant sang like an experienced and classic blues man on Zep I....Plant was otherworldly and continued throughout Zep history. One of the many reasons Zeppelin is the elite rock band still to this day. I believe Plant was 21 or 22 at the time of recording the debut in '68.
I think the comparisons I heard to Plant when I first heard this guy….. turned me off of him. I just don’t think he’s all that. Not yet anyway. Comparisons CAN really hurt people, we learned a lot about this in Diversity Education. Like saying or assuming Asians are great at math. If you are that Asian who isn’t, life can be a real struggle. Not exactly the same thing but as with comparing a relative noob to an arguably iconic voice like Plant, is a real disservice to BOTH men IMHO.

Plant, on the other hand, was 19 when he joined Zep and was ~30 by the time _In Through the Out Door_ released, Led Zeppelin's 8th and final studio album. GVF has barely released 3 albums (going on its 4th in July) worth of material since 2017 (~6 years). In 6 years, Led Zeppelin had released 5 full studio albums and had had numerous sold out concert tours. The only interview with Robert Plant that I've ever seen about GFV was said tongue-in-cheek. We don't know how Plant really feels about GVF. One thing is certain, Plant is certain that Josh (and GFV on the whole) heavily borrowed Led Zeppelin's style.
As an amateur "barritone with some range", singing in cover bands, it was always difficult to get some bandmates to understand I simply could not cover certain tenor singers / songs unless the tenor happened to be singing down low in his range on a song. Those songs were high but makeable in my barritone range and super easy for the original tenor. But they'd think you should be able to sing anything by that guy if you could do one song in his catalog. You gotta be born with it. And I have to add - to me the key to singing well with range (besides practice and training) is relaxing the crap out of yourself to hit the high notes - not straining to hit them. Took me too long to realize that. Everyone wants to look like angry dramatic rock singer, gritting your teeth and popping your throat.... Looks cool, doesn't work very well though.

I've seen many comments in other videos, slamming Josh's voice...calling him a chipmunk or saying he's screeching. Funny how different people hear music.

It's so cool to see Z93 featured on a review video, it's the main rock station where I live in central Michigan. (I remember when the station advertised that the band would be live in the studio). The band grew up in a small town not far from Saginaw, where the station is located. GVF is a great addition to the amazing bands/artists that have started here in Michigan. Well done, Fil. Your desire to clarify for folks who don't get this point and self-criticize for the wrong reasons is admirable, as is your execution, which should make it plain. I don't have much of a range, but I can optimize it by transposiition. Understanding this makes my shower singing far less painful for those who unfortunately might hear it!
I have had people tell me I should learn to sing a particular song in the original key. As Fil pointed out, sometimes it is just not possible. That is why the capo was invented I suppose, I will add as well that for those who might have been confused, you can move the capo up and still drop down to your lower range. You are first dropping down an octave from the original song and then moving up with the capo to find the key best suited to your voice. Another reason to use the capo is that open cords at times sound better/different from bar chords, or the shapes simply can't be reproduced in a bar chord.
Interesting fact: Choral music is written with the average voices (with the standard 2-3 octave range) in mind to give different effects. For example sopranos and altos singing the same note will have a slightly different tone because each group is placed slightly differently in their voice.

Hi Fil- thank you for this! i did vocal range testing, and came in at D2-F4- at my best. So basically a Bass with 2 octaves. But I am older, so that makes some sense too! Now I need to identify songs within a 2 octave range lol
Good info that encourages all singers to sing in their own range and transpose the keys of songs they may want to cover. We all sound better when we respect our own range.
In Zappa's Mothers of Invention era, my sister went to a concert where he bagged on the audience about how musically stupid they were, didn't understand what he was playing, etc. But. He spat, literally, at the audience. Here, it is the performers which would best be spat at. Crap is crap no matter how earnest the offering.
interesting - A lot of folk listening to my band think i have a high voice....but Im all out at A4 chest voice (which is actually top of the Baritone range) and i can get down to A1 - its all to do with tone - My A4's sound a lot higher than a good tenor would because when you get high you make the voice smaller

Would I be right in thinking that as he gets older and his vocal range changes (naturally) then he'll be singing more in a tenor range? I remember for instance that Genesis had to transpose their music down a bit (sorry non musician here) as Phil Collins's voice changed over the years (especially the 2007 concerts, which were recorded). I know that certain singers improve their vocal range with age retaining high notes but being able to go lower, mainly female singers I'm thinking of.

I hear some form of pitch manipulation, especially on sustained notes/vowels - similar to Brian Wilsons voice on the new Beach Boys album - though the Beach Boys example is far more obvious . My vocal range is, reliably, E2-G4 with a falsetto range of A3-E5. Not sure what the official label of my range would be called but it is very frustrating not being able to hit that A4 in my chest voice because it is in so many of the songs I want to cover live and transposing them often doesn’t work because they require specific open voicings on the guitar. Maybe I need to buy a baritone acoustic 🤷🏼♂️

Hi Fil. As a Baritone myself (possible baritenor) would D4/E4/ F4/G4 always be a chesty belt for someone with thicker cords ? I can hit those notes in falsetto & head voice but prefer the chest sound - pretty sure I’m mixing correctly to avoid yelling :)

You can transpose the key of the song m8. In my experience most songs can only be moved about a step or so before they begin to sound off to non musicians.

I'd have to side with Bari, most likely high bari. A natural tenors range would include notes around A4 as 'comfortable' in chest voice. Freddie's voice would sometimes fatigue live around this range where he would then change the melody to avoid them. So it leads me to believe he was pushing his chest voice to that place, rather than it being comfortably within his range.
This is a strange choice of a song/live performance, to be honest. I understand how it serves the purpose of the video as a whole, I get that... But it just doesn't do him justice. It's an old perfomance, and one of the worst I've heard. In a more recent Age of Machine "official live" video, he covers 3 octaves...effortlessly. When people talk about his "range", that's what they mean. Not this.
Unfortunately all of the live videos I saw on their official channel have been pitch corrected. I didn't want to have to explain that in the video so went with a live performance that hasn't been post produced 🙂

I've seen many comments in other videos, slamming Josh's voice...calling him a chipmunk or saying he's screeching. Funny how different people hear music.

It's so cool to see Z93 featured on a review video, it's the main rock station where I live in central Michigan. (I remember when the station advertised that the band would be live in the studio). The band grew up in a small town not far from Saginaw, where the station is located. GVF is a great addition to the amazing bands/artists that have started here in Michigan. Well done, Fil. Your desire to clarify for folks who don't get this point and self-criticize for the wrong reasons is admirable, as is your execution, which should make it plain. I don't have much of a range, but I can optimize it by transposiition. Understanding this makes my shower singing far less painful for those who unfortunately might hear it!
I have had people tell me I should learn to sing a particular song in the original key. As Fil pointed out, sometimes it is just not possible. That is why the capo was invented I suppose, I will add as well that for those who might have been confused, you can move the capo up and still drop down to your lower range. You are first dropping down an octave from the original song and then moving up with the capo to find the key best suited to your voice. Another reason to use the capo is that open cords at times sound better/different from bar chords, or the shapes simply can't be reproduced in a bar chord.
The portion of the video about manipulating the range for other voice types is quite insightful...and I'll leave it at that :)
Interesting fact: Choral music is written with the average voices (with the standard 2-3 octave range) in mind to give different effects. For example sopranos and altos singing the same note will have a slightly different tone because each group is placed slightly differently in their voice.

Hi Fil- thank you for this! i did vocal range testing, and came in at D2-F4- at my best. So basically a Bass with 2 octaves. But I am older, so that makes some sense too! Now I need to identify songs within a 2 octave range lol
Good info that encourages all singers to sing in their own range and transpose the keys of songs they may want to cover. We all sound better when we respect our own range.

In Zappa's Mothers of Invention era, my sister went to a concert where he bagged on the audience about how musically stupid they were, didn't understand what he was playing, etc. But. He spat, literally, at the audience. Here, it is the performers which would best be spat at. Crap is crap no matter how earnest the offering.

interesting - A lot of folk listening to my band think i have a high voice....but Im all out at A4 chest voice (which is actually top of the Baritone range) and i can get down to A1 - its all to do with tone - My A4's sound a lot higher than a good tenor would because when you get high you make the voice smaller

Would I be right in thinking that as he gets older and his vocal range changes (naturally) then he'll be singing more in a tenor range? I remember for instance that Genesis had to transpose their music down a bit (sorry non musician here) as Phil Collins's voice changed over the years (especially the 2007 concerts, which were recorded). I know that certain singers improve their vocal range with age retaining high notes but being able to go lower, mainly female singers I'm thinking of.

I hear some form of pitch manipulation, especially on sustained notes/vowels - similar to Brian Wilsons voice on the new Beach Boys album - though the Beach Boys example is far more obvious . Robert Plant’s speaking voice is very high. I’d like to hear your thoughts about singing “in tune”.
My vocal range is, reliably, E2-G4 with a falsetto range of A3-E5. Not sure what the official label of my range would be called but it is very frustrating not being able to hit that A4 in my chest voice because it is in so many of the songs I want to cover live and transposing them often doesn’t work because they require specific open voicings on the guitar. Maybe I need to buy a baritone acoustic 🤷🏼♂️

Hi Fil. As a Baritone myself (possible baritenor) would D4/E4/ F4/G4 always be a chesty belt for someone with thicker cords ? I can hit those notes in falsetto & head voice but prefer the chest sound - pretty sure I’m mixing correctly to avoid yelling :)

You can transpose the key of the song m8. In my experience most songs can only be moved about a step or so before they begin to sound off to non musicians.
Man, this just doesn’t do it for me. At all. Also, I happened to jump to 18:15 mark….I swear that melody against that progression sounds ODDLY familiar…we all are thinking it, come on.

I'd have to side with Bari, most likely high bari. A natural tenors range would include notes around A4 as 'comfortable' in chest voice. Freddie's voice would sometimes fatigue live around this range where he would then change the melody to avoid them. So it leads me to believe he was pushing his chest voice to that place, rather than it being comfortably within his range.

This is a strange choice of a song/live performance, to be honest. I understand how it serves the purpose of the video as a whole, I get that... But it just doesn't do him justice. It's an old perfomance, and one of the worst I've heard. In a more recent Age of Machine "official live" video, he covers 3 octaves...effortlessly. When people talk about his "range", that's what they mean. Not this.
Unfortunately all of the live videos I saw on their official channel have been pitch corrected. I didn't want to have to explain that in the video so went with a live performance that hasn't been post produced 🙂
