      I also agree! ELO has been in my top 3 since high school (the 70s - and still remain at the top!) :)
      So glad Fil did this analysis & reaction. It might just introduce ELO and the genius of Jeff to potential, younger fans. Fil's taste is excellent and he has the perfect channel to spread his knowledge. :)
      Plus his excitement is infectious!

      Absolutely agree! Janet Jackson is in but not ELO? What a joke. Also, Todd Rundgren was passed up for Janet Jackson this past year. He is another incredible singer songwriter producer who is still at the top of his game, but somehow Janet Jackson is a rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Famer? All politics.

    Considering that this was just about the first thing ELO ever did, the quality of the song is outstanding. Way back in 1970. There are not too many band that had something like that for their debut. I am long since convinced that when history looks back on the whole Rock n Roll era, Jeff Lynne will be crowned king.

    • @lhpl
      @lhpl Месяц назад

      I just rewatched this, and though your comment is 3 years old, I'd like to add something.
      The quality is indeed outstanding (for lack of a stronger word), and also I find it amazing how faithful this relatively recent live version is to the 1970 original. And it just still works. As for Jeff Lynne's debut, it was of course with the single _Imposters of Life's Magazine_ in 1968. And his work with the Idle Race in my opinion is just as strong as anything he has written and composed since. Actually, just checking the JL song database, I noticed that the song _Follow Me, Follow_ , which in the Idle Race version is just beautiful, was written by Jeff maybe as early as 1966 (if JL DB is correct) for Tinkerbell's Fairydust, and the first demo - which unfortunately seems lost - had Jeff on vocals and guitar. Listening to that song, either the existing Tinkerbell's Fairydust demo, their "final" version, or the version with the Idle Race on The Birthday Party, I think it is incredible to think that Jeff was perhaps not even 19 when he wrote that. So by 1970, Jeff already had plenty of experience, _and_ had delivered plenty of music of outstanding quality.
      Fil, if you read this, I'd love to see you listen to an Idle Race song - it could be _Follow Me, Follow_ or even better _The Lady Who Said She Could Fly_ (which I think has some of Jeff's best vocal work ever!) - and share your analysis and thoughts.

    I don’t know where I have been all my life, but I just now discovered Jeff Lynne. I see him as a Renaissance artist. I am soaking up his music from A to Z across the years. His voice is unusual in tone, range, and strength. His skill set is remarkable. Thanks for your analysis of this truly great artist.

    Jeff Lynne is a multi instrumentalist and genius. Saw them last summer in a packed show in Sunrise Florida. They had a phenomenal light show. Saw them in 1978 in North Carolina when they were an all male band. That’s when they had the spaceship coming out of the ceiling it was really cool. His music is literally out of this world.

    Jeff is not only all of things you mentioned, but he has a gentle spirit and a wistful desire for people to be kinder and more reasonable that is not as hippy-dippy as George's or as futilely gnostic as Lennon's. Jeff's Love of kinder gentler world is not preachy, and i am guessing since he does not seem to aspire to being a rock and roll famous guy, less hypocritical than most any other rocker i can think of too.

    It is still beyond me how this guy is not SIR Jeff Lynne, what he has done for the British music business over several decades is quite frankly astounding, right up there with the likes of Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger (I would argue even beyond them).
    He is one of the very best and yet most under valued and under rated musicians this country has ever produced. The word genius is thrown around like confetti these days, but with Jeff Lynne, the word does not do him justice, when he's gone, we shall never hear nor see the likes of again. He' is the Beethoven of our times.

Took it for granted like air and gravity. Now I'm really paying attention. In his 70s now, and still delivering exactly what we expected. Greatest Show on Earth.

    Jeff Lynne is about the only artist of his age that I can think of that still has 100% of his vocal ability intact. Time has not damaged his voice at all.

    • @joeynarciso94
      @joeynarciso94 11 месяцев назад

      How true that statement about maintaining the quality of one's voice with age! Going into one's mid-seventies with that blessing is such a rarity! I believe Jeff and Barry Gibb were born in '47 and '46 respectively. Although I haven't truly heard Barry doing any singing for a few years perhaps, it's also been astounding to me how Barry, unlike so many others, had continued to sustain the qualities of his voice with all the "freaky crazy screaming" (my words although otherwise known as reverse falsetto) that seems to bring so much joy both to Barry and all his fans throughout the decades at least from 1975 when those capabilities were discovered quite rather by accident.
      Can I not include some BeeGees with me to that desert island as well? Plus of course the podcasts and lectures, the chef, all of one's best friends with all of their most happy and compatible dogs but of course, and then my microwaveable hotpacks, the Starbuck's Frappuccinos and, oh never mind, I think I'll just stay home!

      Absolutely spot-on. As ever, Fil's analysis here is a joy to listen to even though as a similar type of Jeff fan as the first commenter, yes, it was actually difficult not to have missed a few of Jeff's years. Even though I truly really already knew most of these facts regarding Jeff's prodigious bodies of talents, how encouraging to hear it all reiterated back from yet another master, Fil himself. Bravo yet again. You folks are all a true joy in my life as I struggle through my golden years nearly the same age as Jeff though not blessed with his also apparently consistent great health. Congrats, blessings and so many thanks to all seniors who can maintain those abilities to continue with all their talents throughout the course of their lives as folks like Jeff have been able to do!

After that, the lights go down.....the top "bun" of the spaceship lifts up......smoke pours out....green lasers stabbing through the air all over the place........smoke clears a little...and inside of that thing: Jeff, Bev, Kelly, Mik, Richard, Hugh, Melvyn ... violin, cellos, and lasers! So glad you covered this Fil! Jeff Lynn's E.L.O. is so magnificent! The U.K. is so lucky to see him everywhere!
    Fil, I absolutely, cringe and become nauseated when people say E.L.O. sounds like the beatles! (My rant & yep, I never have thought that the beatles' music was all that special). No comparison, whatsoever, & E.L.O.'s music cannot be filed into some inapplicable category, void of appreciation for every instrument, production, writing, composing & performance, that was injected into every hit!
    All were such broad ranged pieces, made up of multi composed genres & styles of music, that came together perfectly & stood on their own excellence. IDK how to describe it but I do know it isn't similar to anything else, especially the beatles!
    Anyhoot, you should have fro'd your hair a bit, slipped on your shades, grabbed your guitar and played & sang with this legendary master of 'cool'!🔥🔥🔥

    So many layers!!! So many layers to his sound which I think makes his music almost untouchable. And, bc I grew up in the 60's and 70's, you know, a "Boomer", so we cut our teeth on Rock-n-roll. For me, ELO is like the Beatles just evolved into what his music, Jeff Lynne, is for all of us Boomers. Right? What a blessing Lynne is healthy and still rockin', keeping the finest of that era alive. The "Traveling Wilbury's" are a true gift! Amazing blend of genius!

    This was great! You’re so right that his voice is unique. He is so well-rounded. So much talent in one man. Did you watch when ELO was finally inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame? The story of how he learned about harmony and chords is really cute. Literally as a child with his Dad at a sewer pipe. Lol! ELO is still one of my favorites. ❤️

      My mother is 85. We had to move her from California back east to care for her as she gets older. Naturally the luggage had to be greatly reduced. When it came to her vinyls, we had to be strict. But her ELO Blue Sky made the trip! And still going strong. Thanks, Jeff.

      jOSHCOURTS: I agree - never liked Dylan's voice -- he was a decent songwriter, but more a "poet" -- I heard an interview one time where he was asked about how he felt about his own voice on recordings.. and he said: "when I hear myself on tape... it kind of makes me want to .... HIDE" :)

    Sir, for some reason I just came across this video on your channel. ELO is the perfect example of what a great musician is capable of. This song in particular is a brilliant mix of what guitar, violins, etc etc CAN sound like. It may help that the composer has a “little bit “ of talent. It’s also nice to see older people enjoy your analysis as much as I do. (I am 68) Please be safe during this crazy period of history. Peace

    Now you’re talking! Jeff is an absolute treasure, it’s unbelievable that he hasn’t been awarded any honours as far as I know - he surely deserves a knighthood! You are right about Jeff’s tone - it’s so sexy - and I’m a straight male! I can’t think of any artists still performing after 50 years who are not only still at the top of their game but getting better and better! His current band are brilliant and finally give him the sound he always wanted

    I remember seeing ELO San Francisco 1974. I was aware of them but not much knowledge about the music but the electric string sound was so cool to experience. I became more aware of Jeff through Travelin Wilburys.My ears perk up now whenever I hear his name and I pay attention to what he's doing and like it.

    Fil, I’m so glad I subscribed to your channel. You’re intelligent with great analytical skills, and just nice to spend time with. The fact that you’re a skilled musician truly validates you.
    About Jeff Lynn, I have all the ELO albums on vinyl, back from the days when I purchased a couple albums a week at least. Absolutely love his music, and the way he constructs these layers around thoroughly engaging melodies.
    Thanks for this!

    Absolutely love ELO. Grew up listening to A New World Record, On The Third Day, Out of The Blue, all masterpieces. Can't tell you how many lazy nights I spent listening to them on 8 Track with a cold beer in hand, black light on... knowing I was listening to something special. Had the opportunity to see them live in New Jersey on their Discovery tour back in like '79 or 80.

    Why did I of all people never look for any Jeff Lynne/ELO from you before?! As good here at 66 as he was at 23. Sounded the same in 2017 at Wembley too. Remarkable anyone's vocals hold up like that. Well, musically he's remarkable in every way. He is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing all of them on one track. A lot of people consider him a musical genius and I can't disagree. My earliest memory of hearing ELO was around 1999, about 16. They put headphones on my when I walked in the room and it was Can't Get It Out of My Head. I was blown away and had to hear all of Eldorado. So glad you covered him.

    It would be very cool to be able to jam with Jeff and pick his brain and receive some of the knowledge he has learned from all those years in industry. To be in the presence of his genius would be privilege. Always loved the interstellar-spacy-synth, melodic , poppy and classically themed songs (you never forget and still can sing anywhere and anytime) that still sound timeless. The ELO ship has taken my ears on a grand journey, and may it never end. Great analyses, Fil.
