you were mostly right about zato but you missed out on the number 1 problem zato players are dealing with, which is being cucked by system mechanics. Eddie has always been really vulnerable to yrc or burst, and now the cooldown is longer and burst is fullscreen. And he cant bait bursts like he used to with break the law which makes the situation worse.
burst, how easy it is to snowball now means zato can get blown up pretty easily. but i don't really want zato to be top tier or anything. blocking for days without any means of interaction is pretty boring.
maybe eddie should get a new move that makes him block, like persona 4 arena ultimax shadow labrys' 5d?

I agree that zato needed to be detuned a bit, but I don't think the way arksys did it is healthy for the character. Everyone got Wild Assault and Deflect Shield, and everyone had a flat damage nerf so games would go on longer, which is great. However, with the removal of Break The Law Burst/YRC/RRC bait, and fullscreen burst buff, it's super easy to kill Eddie now, and it takes twice as long for him to come back. That alone would have been "okay" for a zato rework, but the proxy nerfs to zato's ability to stall for Eddie (reduced flight time, everyone getting more pressure extension with WA, 3rd lowest health in the game, etc.) is what really made zato "bottom tier", at least in my opinion. I'm hoping they either bring back BTL full invincibility, or reduce the time it takes for Eddie to recover by some amount. At the end of the day, I think that characters who are inherently difficult to play should have a decent payoff for learning their toolkit, which zato is certainly lacking at the moment.

I honestly think the BTL baits were super degenerate and way to good for no real cost. I do think that if Zato blocks burst or YRC he shouldnt lose eddie as getting punished for making the right choice is stupid.
What would you say to reducing the time for eddie to recover by one second, and blocking defensive mechanics no longer kills eddie?
@@semlcolon Blocking defensive mechanics just unsummons Eddie. The problem is that the punishment for not blocking the mechanics is way bigger(basically a free turn for the opponent if they catch you stalling), and they removed a big character specific way to block these options. Zato can only block during Eddie's attacks and after safe moves (5k, 2p, 5p). So people can just wait to use meter on zatos attacks and they get a turn on a bottom 3 hp and then some. With global changes to positive that means characters have more opportunities to use any meter, YRC, burst, RRC on oppose, and just immediately put zato in a heavy lose con

I mean tbh zatos timer isn't the issue, the issue is his relationship to the system mechanics.
Burst being so accessible AND being punished for still blocking the burst is an exclusive zato problem.
The problem with Zato isn't the fact that Eddie cooldown is longer. It's that layered on top of the changes they made to how burst works which was already a MASSIVE nerf to him. Because burst is now fullscreen, it's possible to kill Eddie for free with zero risk. Even if Zato baits the burst, Eddie is gone and Zato is completely unable to do anything productive for 7 seconds.
Is he LITERALLY unplayable? No. But Zato players didn't drop him or the game because he's bad, it's because he's not fun to play anymore. At this point when the game simply punishes you for trying to run your gameplan, while other characters effectively get it for free (insert character that pops up in your mind here), that's when the balance has been fucked up in some way.
Also this isn't directed at anyone in particular, (I mean it, please don't take this the wrong way, commenters), but I find it incredibly immature to say "but this character deserved to be gutted" for the reason of you simply don't enjoy fighting them. I fucking despise playing against Bridget, but I don't spend every waking day of my life hoping she gets removed from the game, because so many people enjoy playing her and that's fine.
This game is absolutely full of bullshit, and the fact that people still play this game means that we're mostly ok with the bullshit. It's sort of what defines Guilty Gear as a game. So please try to be self aware when you complain about a certain character, because chances are there are people who hate your character for frankly understandable reasons.

Somewhat disagree with the last bit. In my opinion, a character being unfun to play against is just as bad as, if not worse than, a character being unfun to play. Now, I do agree that gutting the character for that reason is a bit extreme and probably doesn't actually address the problem as much as it does just slap a Band-Aid on it. But changes do need to be made to ensure every character is as fun to play against as they are to play as.
Now, I don't personally think any character in Strive is unfun to play against (I used to dread fighting Nagoriyuki but I never thought he was unfun), but granted, I'm a floor 7 so my opinion probably doesn't matter.
Yeah, the diff between a strive top tier and a mid tier is moderate, but not unplayable

As someone who used to play Smash competently, and then I got into traditional fighting games, I've acknowledged smash as the party game it was designed to be and there's really no fixing it.

3:50 - 4:00 in Magic The Gathering we have a term for this, its called "The Thing" where once we get our main gameplan moving it just gives you alot of value or makes it very difficult to get out of for the other players unless something is done (ie Boardwipe) or that player just wins. Just wanted to mention this because thought it was interesting that he says something somewhat similar lol.

Althought having exactly 3 MU that aren't a some form of "Please let me use my signature move" to "meant to be good on paper but this is faust so you lose" kinda sucks, so take solace in knowing we don't get to do crazy shit often (if ever)

Ofc the people who dont play asuka + dont know the matchup complain the most about the character 💀. Same thing with Zato. If you think they are unfair, try them for a week. You will find just how quickly you get dismantled and where the holes in their kit are

I think you’re forgetting the part where resources are tosses out like candy so Zatos gameplay is constantly interrupted by burst and YRC, which kills Eddie leaving him in a position to lose. They also nerfed other shit that wasn’t even necessary.
I don’t even love Zato or anything, but it’s kind of disheartening for a character who was considered “good” in season 2 get mauled while characters like Ram, Leo, and Nago all get buffs for some ungodly reason (new special moves coming for those last two btw lol, as if they need it)
These characters have been at the top since fucking launch, and have only ever gotten slaps on the wrist, if anything, and yet Zato is character they bring out the femur breaker for?
I do think Eddie coming back so fast was bad and it should’ve been changed, but the way they went about it was very ungraceful. It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t patch this game at a snail’s fucking pace
Ok Gekko I love you and im no professional zato but eddie gauge is not the only reason zato feels like shit now. I do agree hes not unplayable and some people Jonathan Tene are massively overeacting and also the zato bros are unloyal as shit, but zato did experience quite a bit of pain. What really hurt him is that they shot him in three major ways: eddie gauge refills slower, flight is much worse, and the rework of blue burst means that Break The Law can no longer burst bait. Now any of these blows in isolation would be understandable, but with them all at once it makes zato's neutral and defense petrifying as youre so, so much weaker. I genuinely don't know what I would do to buff him or how I would have gone about nerfing him, but i do feel like a character that complex deserves to be very strong, and right now hes putting up a lot of fight to get really good damage in a game where sol badguy and goldick dickindick just completely deletes you because you decided to block.
Yeah, this pretty much sums it up. Zato's not unplayable, but it sucks that he (arguably) has the highest skill floor, with no real "reward" for learning the character as he stands now, other than the satisfaction of Eddie's drill animation
That's not "overreacting" from Tene , they're actual tournament level players .
Where tier does matter , unlike average joe playing for Saturday night .
On my opinion, I believe White WA is pretty much balanced if you're playing a character with low mobility, like Potemkin (he's the only character with White WA that I play, I honestly don't know about the others). It actually helps to deal with lots of situations, like baiting supers and getting through Axl's tornado and other multi-hit "barrier" attacks (God, do I hate dealing with this in neutral).

White wild assault should be neutral on block so it stays as a get in tool but doesn’t give them free advantage while it does it

yah a 100% Tension super would be cool, like the flash cinematic supers are all so good looking. Granted it might take a bit to make the animations for everyone, but I love how this game doesn't always take itself seriously and I miss insta kills like May and DIzzy's from Rev 2.

I recently got into Strive through playing with friends and while I dont think Im entirely ready to try to real online scene, its been a blast learning how to actually maneuver my characters. So far my main has been Giovanna and thats been especially fun for me tripping up people with Wild Assault out the gate to put pressure down. That said, I am interested to see where things go for Season 4 and also new characters to pick up as well. I got Season 1 on discount and plan to pick up Testament from that and eventually when I get the other Seasons, I'll probably try to learn Bedman and especially Slayer.
Now if only my friend wouldnt knock me down a peg every time he picks Sol 😅

All I want is for Happy Chaos to maybe not give the opponent 80% their burst gauge back on his basic wall to wall combo. His damage is fine and makes sense but come on, is it necessary after all his nerfs? You could justify maybe 60% but I've legit had games were to opponent burst 5 times...It's that bad. Especially with Deus Ex Machina which alone lends about 40%.
you want the guard crush from white assault fine, but if you take away my ability to not lose oki as pot literally any time 90% of the cast has half meter for a frame one invincible super I'm rioting.
Can you talk about the 3v3 mode, what some asists could be, if it's ever going to come out, how it can compare to other 3v3s which are out or are coming out soon.
I do want a scaling rework for HC. Something along the lines of, the higher your beat, the more your scaling increases but this only applies to gunshots not normals.(this could be changed to the lower you are on concentration the more damage you gunshots do)
I hope we get a 3v3 mode where you choose 3 characters and control them all. Calling in assists and swapping characters are all I want.

I think they should just revert the Eddie respawn timer change but keep it at 6 seconds if Eddie gets hit. That way if Zato runs out of Eddie gauge while doing optimal combo routes he isn’t then punished for playing well but also if Eddie gets caught out the enemy gets a bigger reward. That and bring back old BTL burst and YRC baits because currently it has almost no uses.

my issue with removing WWA is while it's in a lot of areas absurd, it's bedman's BIGGEST redeeming quality imo and it puts him from like D- tier to D+, bedman's neutral is... eh, and his defense is notoriously one of the worst in the game, especially given his mad low HP for a heavyweight bigbody. being able to threaten a jumpscare neutral skip is like unanimously in most situations his best roundstart and is one of his only roundstart options that actually allows him to start working his magic, which is hard to get up usually.

honestly i think zato just needs to be able to keep eddy alive easier. most matchups just dont allow his offense to get going at all outside of niche and difficult mixups without eddy

Everyone should be able to gatling from their crouch p but you can only go into slash. So it not too much to worry about. If you're ready you can at least get a baby combo. For funise just put instant death back or give everyone a max out slayer super.
As an Asuka main, yeah some things you say are true, but his combos barely do any damage, and once he’s out of mana, every character can do a TOD

you are absolutely idiotic about Sato. I will explain. One, the flying nerf is ridiculous and hurts his ability to play neutral at all. not only do you have to survive for longer without Eddie, but you don't have as many mix-ups because you can't fly for as long.
The punch nerfs hurt him too, now his main boxing tool is super laggy and shit and doesn't confirm into anything
The respawn timer change is also insanity by the way. let it be known that he has the same Eddie Red recharge timer as he did Xrd in XX where he got like twice as many Eddie actions for a bar.
The main thing is that he got screwed by system mechanics. when you give people deflect shield, that hurts mix-up characters the most.
when you make bursts come back faster, that hurts mix up characters the most.
when you give more options with the burst gauge, that frees up tension to be used for yellow Roman cancel which hurts mix up characters the most.
I would also wager that zato benefits the least from wild assault. this is because he can barely combo into it. this is because he doesn't often mash 5H in neutral and if he mashes 2S into 5H he usually will whiff the 5H.
admittedly, he can do a pseudo unblockable for 35 meter and wild assualt but it is rather expensive and only guarantees a command grab
oh yeah and his command grab doesn't even reset Eddie anymore.
The point is, the NERFS was the icing on the cake. Even with no nerfs, zato would have been shit in season 3 or at least very much worse

I was at an event where a 14 year old playing zato on pad went 3-0 on every single person he played. So I will never believe the ‘zato-1 is unplayable’ people
Ranking system. I just picked up GG about a month ago after not playing a FG for over a decade. I made it to celestial floor and floors 9-celestial seems to have a massive skill range more so 10 and celestial.
I've had this thought for a while, but i don't know how good it is. It sounds good in my head but i need someone else's opinion on it.
That is orange Wild Assault doesn't hard knock down on wall break, and white Wild Assault doesn't take any brust away on hit or block.
The characters that have OWA i think snowball the hardest and it's the most frustrating thing for me with the game right now.
WWA doesn't bother me that much, but it does need to be nerfed in some way and taking brust with what it all does, i think is too much.
That Asuka analysis is quite skewed. He does have problems and they aren't small. He's basically the zoner equivalent of ABA.
His weaknesses include:
- No meterless reversal outside of a 1/30 chance on their starting Test Case 1 - The deck Asuka players do not mill. Asuka using Overdrive Reversal = Losing a Test Case 3 mill
- Asuka's mill Test Case 3 for Mana Regen and Auto Card Import - Test Case 3 has least amount of fast cube shots overall. meaning less neutral presence unless setup. Metatron and Portal are easily to counterhit due to slow startup speed. You can use this to your advantage. Once they switch to TC3, your top priority should be to stop Mana Regen draw. If they get a cube heavy first draw in TC3, they are guaranteed to struggle in neutral as they try to mill or build meter to activate mill. They only have 2/30 chance to draw mana, auto import on the first TC3 draw. In fact, all hand manipulation cards have 2/30 chance.
- If you get in on an Asuka without Mana Regen or Tension, it's pretty much GGs. You can widdle away their mana bar on block, which forces defensive burst usage. Even if they do use meter reversal or burst, they are now likely operating under very limited resources. You see this at all levels of play, and it's the primary reason why Zando and Gobou lose matches.
- He trades health for quick mana refill, which means if you deplete his mana bar is zero, he's basically 1 shot by all top tiers. It also means you can pay attention to his mana bar to predict gaps in pressure.
- He only has one staff type per deck - If you see low grav (TC2) or vortex staff (TC3), you will not see it again until they draw through the entire deck to refresh.
- You are not forced to block cubes. They are easily hit with jabs, which is extremely low risk, and you can even counter hit Asuka through cube shots with long range normals. For example, you play Baiken - You can literally j.S cubes, f.S cubes, kabari cubes, 2D under and through cubes into counter hit, and Asuka has to respect that.
All i'm saying is Yo Johnson is a high so why isn't Axl Bomber a high (when TK'd)
I kind of want to go a bit weird for season 4 characters.
So I’d say Izuna from the Overture entry and Leopaldon from Isuka for the returning characters, and for the completely new to the fight; either Gabriel and one new character new to the story entirely or 2 new characters unique to strive.

I do hope season 1 dlc characters could get new moves in season 4. (maybe in the ladder half of the season).
Just like, give Zato-1 a special move he can use without Eddie, or a way to refill eddie faster. Either one would make him more fun to try and play
I wish Strive would have a complete upgrade to get things to imagine for Xrd Rev 3, I would pay 70€ just to have more moves, more combo freedom, turning off wallbreaks or at least the possibility to extrend combo after a break like in tekken,but maybe danger time reduced to 5 seconds. Instant kills would be cool.
I just want 3v3 at this point. I'm stoked for that!
I just hope they let solo people build out a trio of characters to fight 3 stacks. I'm going to have a hard time aligning my friends and I's schedules to play otherwise

They need to just get the guy who made the Strive - Plus mod, and ask him if they could just use the Strive - Plus mod but for the whole game.

If Burst made Eddie dissappear but didn't kill him (so Zato would still have to get in with Eddie but wouldn't have to wait a year for Eddie to come back) would that be a viable solution to his problem?
It would help. A lot of his neutral was neutered by Eddie recharge timer too because a lot of the times it's too risky to even pull out Eddie in matchups where it could debatably be good.
But as other commenters say, the neutral isn't the worst part - it's winning the neutral and then being punished for it by YRC and Burst. So yeah that would help.
I've been a Zato player since launch. I honestly think they only need to make his interactions with YRC and Burst better (and possibly make it so that if Zato is hit, Eddie goes into white recharge like the older games) and if he gets a new move my hope is that it's a command-recharge similar to Asuka mana regen (obv much slower than Asuka mana regen)
That would help him play neutral and run pressure as he could trade plus frames at the end of combos and pressure for the ability to regen Eddie, plus it would net him better reward off of his horribly weak solo options. ch 2s > 22h or ch 6p could lead to a safe generation of Eddie gauge instead of making him run really weak and not-too-scary strike throw to stall. Not to mention the burst cost that this character experiences now since WA is one of the only ways solo Zato can generate plus frames and mixups without a hard knockdown.
A caveat with this is that a move like this can either make Sun Void busted or weaker. Which if it makes it weaker, no biggie imo. But if it's stronger then I wouldn't mind nerfs to sun void to make it an exclusive combo-ender instead of how it can be used now where if Zato makes you block spaced 5h and you have no meter you just have to eat it.
Other Zatos really want a move that improves solo Zato's conversions but I think that would detract from the fun of the character.
I have no idea. But I want ranked to become elo based, with different rank per character. That's the only proper way.

As an asuka player that hand is not great.
i play gio. faust is indeed annoying with the crawl. pretty much negates me doing 5h, 214k, 236k, 214s, meaty en236k. the trick is to remember if he's doing crawl, he ain't blocking. so i'll often go for fakes and whatnot into 2S or just throw him.
We need more PVE content.
my biggest problem is still that Happy Chaos cant even connect 2K>2D anymore without expending a gun shot, i played with my friend who plays him and he hasnt played for a season and now all of his characters stuff is minus or needs a gun shot, while he just wanted to play what he considered a fun character in personality and he had a good time playing him before and now the character only has fun stuff for people who play optimally and like 10 hours a day.
it just felt disheartening seeing him go into training mode and seeing that normal links or cancels dont even work while other characters can do that for free and even now when he lands a hit he gets like a 40% combo when it is optimized, while i dunno, my monkey brained Bridget can get the same and more by just hitting a poke from 3/4 screen.
2k -> 2d is slightly range dependent but I don't think the character with the best conversions in the game needs...better conversions. It feels like you're talking about a character that isn't HC since he has the exact same links/cancels that every character in the game has except multitudes better because of how flexible the gun is and him having long combos is just a byproduct of him having extremely powerful combo tools like Steady Aim.

I feel like you misunderstand what makes zato so bad. I was willing to hear you out but you did not mention his main weakness. Its fine that he gets punished for fucking up, thats good. The problem is he gets punished even when playing perfectly because of yrc and burst. Zatos opponent can misplay a ton of interactions, yrc, and then they have 6.5 seconds (which is an eternity in fighting games) where they fight a character with bad neutral and awful defense. You can now run him down and if you fuck up, hey, you built 50 meter again from being on the offensive, just yrc.
