On one episode, Floyd described himself as a lonely widower.
Laugh as much as you want Otis was the only one married.
Maybe that's why he drank so much?
I exercised caution and kept my laughter to a grin---- good one!
No he wasn't, Lester Scoulby was married and had a little girl in the episode where Ben Weaver wanted Andy to serve an eviction notice on the Scoulby's!
Not a main character though
You are 100% right Bob! Didn't that guy play more than one character on TAGS? I'm thinking he did. I once won 50 bucks from this guy who bet me that Howard Morris aka Ernest T Bass was a regular character. We bet 20 bucks to begin with and then when I told him that Ernest T Bass was only in 5 episodes the other guy is the one who bumped it up from a 20 dollar bet to a 50 dollar bet too! WRAL TV5 out of Raleigh, NC once did this thing where they were traveling around to the small towns in NC to try and find the real life town that was the most like Mayberry and they chose the town that I grew up in, Bailey, NC. I'll bet the tv station still has that footage archived at the station in Raleigh too. I believe it was in the 80's when they did that. There is a real town called Mayberry right across the state line in Virginia. If I'm remembering correctly the population there is only about 150 people, 2 cats and 5 dogs and a squirrel! LOL...Andy Griffith also used to have a restaurant in Wilson, NC because I ate there several times but when I went to the Wilson County courthouse looking for photos or any kind of information on it and nobody could find any photos or information on it although several of the people my age (64) and older remembered it. It was right in front of Parkwood Mall in the old Pizza Hut building.
I don't really think about the fact that they are not married, I think of them as a group of friends. Good video Bob.
Likely a budget thing, too.
Having to pay additional actresses for the roles.
Otis had a wife who appeared in the episode where Otis was given an award for something one of his ancestors did, and in the episode where Otis’ brother came for a visit.
I think she also stood by him when Ellie ran for office.
North Carolina here. What about the show where Ben Weaver wanted Andy to serve the eviction notice on Lester Scoulby, he had a wife and a little girl.
I like Ron Howard's description of the community being a kind of family. It's often like that in small towns like Mayberry.
Much easier to write funny scripts when characters weren't tied to a conventional nuclear family.
Mayor Pike was married and had 3 daughters.
Wasnt a major character
Rafe hollister was married.( lreally had to think hard for someone else besides Otis)
Wasn't Emmett married?
Yes.
Mayor Stoner was married or the episode "The Bed jacket"wouldn't have happened
Never saw his wife so dont really count
I seem to remember he had a daughter in a beauty pageant. Or maybe that was Mayor Pike.
As many times as I've watched the show I'm not sure if I've ever even made that observation. I guess you assume there are traditional families out there, you just don't see them all together in the show that much. The only time I can think of off the top of my head seeing a mom, dad, and kids together was the time one family was put in jail for Christmas (don't remember their names).
The Scobys
That's why Otis was a drunk because he was married......
The Scobys were normal but Jenny and Fred Boone were normal out in public until Andy messed it up!
Floyd was married and had at least two sons. One named Norman and one named Randall.
I seem to remember him mentioning a daughter.
You see one of them in the episode where the shoe salesman comes to town.
@@ejwa12 yes, one in the jinx episode and the other one in the shoe salesman episode.
Never noticed all the bachelors
Makes sense, they can incl various one time female guests, guys can travel without having significant others, stay up late playing poker with the boys...
The closest thing to a traditional family was Barney. They did show his mother once.
At the roadblock she says “But Barney, I’m your mother”🤣
The Howard character always cracked me up. Have you ever watched Murder in Coweta County with Andy Griffith,Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash Bob ?
Hi Bob Great video Thank you God Bless Much Love Jean
Emmet was married, and he was a major character in the last season or so. But they didn't do many episodes about him and his wife.
There were occasional nuclear families in Mayberry. But we didn't see them very often. Several characters wanted to get married and settle down. But the writers and producers apparently said no. Marriage and children are actually categories for shark jumps.
Even Howard's mother got married and then left the town.
Yes! Mayberry was one big family. And I agree. It was easier to write the show that way. 😂
I think it was mentioned once in an early episode that Floyd the Barber was married. But I think it was more of a 'once and done' comment made in passing, and never went anywhere.
Kind of like George Costanza's brother.
Darn it! I was going to make that joke about Otis being the only character that was married and happen to be the town drunk. There was a lot of hilarious episodes revolving around liquor consumption. Not sure it would be politically correct now days, but some of the funniest shows was when Barny would accidently get liquored up. And dont forget Aunt Bea and her friends getting buzzed in one episode. So funny.
Great video. Thank you Bob. Someone commented about Emmett being married. He was married to Martha. God Bless. Melanie
The mayor was married- remember the episode where it was aunt B's birthday, and she wanted the bed jacket, but the mayor had Andy but it for his ( the mayor's) wife?
There was the show where a man was acting suspicious, and worked his fields at night etc, turned out because his wife was pregnant, and after some shenanigans Andy delivers the baby- but of course they were only the one show.
A very good point, tho, I never thought about all the bachelor's and batcholsrettes! I always wished Andy married Helen.
We still watch the show on TV every weeknight!
Another good one. Could you do something on Sue Ane Langdon nurse Mary?
👍
I wonder if Bob Snapp had was able to endure watching all the episodes of "Mayberry RFD"
I love the andy griffith show the only character that was married was Otis Campbell and you only saw his wife twice on the show the rest of the characters were family on the show good video bob
although he wasnt introduced until the later seasons(colored episodes) emitt was married.he did become a regular in late episodes as much as gomer was a regular in the older episodes.. pretty much equal screen time
❤❤
Emmitt was married.
Cheers was kinda like that.woody did get married and norm was like otis had a wife you never saw
Gomer never married because he was gay 😂
Emmett was married, but he was a late arrival to TAGS. Did he and his wife (Martha) have any kids? If they did, they were out of the house. If not, they were childless in an era when that would have been less common (on TV if not in the world), and theirs was another non-traditional family.
So far as Helen being Andy’s girl, but she COULD HAVE BEEN HIS SISTER(3:20): had she been Andy’s sister, once he married her, he would still have a non-traditional family. 😂😂😂
Continuity was not a priority on that show. Bertha Edwards, Bertha Johnson, Clara Johnson, Clara Edwards.
We’re a family
Emmett and martha, but it was toward the end and she was iffy as far as a "main" character.
Early on, Floyd was married (Melba) with a son (Norman).
But then he's a widower with no son
Charlene and Dude were married
Not main characters
❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
Boy,the wild singles parties, the ( characters)would have, when we weren't looking in on them
Some good food for thought, Bob. I'm not sure if you've dealt with the racial makeup of Mayberry. It's odd that a small town in the South lacked diversity. In RFD, there was the Indian Strongbow and the black character (which I liked) whose name eludes me. Always enjoy your content!
Never realized how much Mayberry was like Shawshank 😂
Most shows usually use marriage as a Jump the Shark device and almost always wind up badly. Barbara and Larry on IDoJeannie dreaded it a look how that wound up. 🤓😎✌🏼
Less marriages, more happiness (my opinion). Happily, divorced
Maybe the public was tired of the Ozzie and Harriet view of the world by then. But how do you explain the Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family?
