Would be great if you could do a video on how to install PIA separately then have apps running through it like qBittorrent and say Mullvad browser. Great video for a single solution, cheers.
Great suggestion!
Yes please that would be incredible!
yes please and you can use a browser plugin like quick proxy switcher to also go through your privoxy only container VPN not to mention local run apps by using the proxy settings.
Thank you for this tutorial-it really helped me a lot! I appreciate all your hard work. Just a quick tip: If a user is utilizing an SSD for the cache drive and selects it as the primary storage for new downloads, then selects the array as the secondary storage, this method would cause unnecessary write cycles on the SSD, shortening its lifespan as UNRAID's primary Cache drive. Or if the user decides to create the plex "Downloads" share on the array, this would prevent the parity and download disk from ever spinning down. In my opinion, it's smarter to use a 2.5" regular HDD for downloads and create a separate share using "Unassigned Devices" for PLEX downloads. Now I fully understand some people may not have room for this. I am running an optiplex 790 with a Dell H310 HBA SAS card installed with two SFF-8087 connectors with two separate Mini SAS to four (4) Sata connectors for a possible total of 8 drives. I am currently only utilizing six(five 4TB drives and 1TB Cache SSD drive) but will be adding a separate HDD for downloads. Thank you again for this tutorial, your time is appreciated!
That is a great point, thanks for sharing with the community. I agree that it is a little advanced for some people, but for those that can utilize it, it's a great piece of knowledge. Thanks!
@@AlienTech42 You are most welcome. Yeah it is a little advanced, but hey that's what you are for lol jk. Something else I should have mentioned, if you have a basic UNRAID license, you are limited to six devices/drives and may not be able add a separate drive for downloads if you are maxed out with six. I have a PLUS license, I am only utilizing 6 of my possible 12 devices.
Agreed. The basic license is a bit limiting. I have the plus on my demo server and the pro on my production machine. Both machines are Dell PowerEdge servers 6 bay on the demo and 14 on the production. I think I have more drive bays than most people so I try not to go crazy with advanced features. Figured most people watching my channel are home users and not professional IT, but, I could be wrong.
@@AlienTech42 I have a Dell Poweredge T320 collecting dust because my setup now works fine and I would need to spend money on those special drives for that server and I am good. As fasr as people watching, yeah most are home users. I am 43 and have 20+ years in I.T. tech if you couldnt tell lol.
@2siccaudio on my servers I just reflashed the firmware on the controller card to IT mode so that I could use it as JBOD. I am running just standard SATA HDDs.
Thank you, thank ylou thank you thank you ! I'm new to Unraid and you just solved my issues.
Awesome! Glad to hear I was able to help.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. After trying to find a good tutorial on how to install it, this one truly was the best one. Thanks.
Thanks so much for this, would it be possible for a future follow up video that covers TRaSH Guide setup for qBittorrent and specifically how to safely move seeding torrents from the cache to the array with a script? Or whatever the best practice is for long term seeding and storage. I believe you did one recently for Deluge which was very helpful.
Sure thing! It's actually in the works.
@@AlienTech42 Great to hear I really appreciate your in-depth and Unraid focused videos they are so helpful and really provide so much guidance for non technical people like me who are still learning homelab/home server services and using Unraid.
Great Vid. Could you elaborate on why you unchecked the Clickjacking Protection in WebUI security (& perhaps a expo on that whole section) for newbies please. Cheers.
According to TRaSH, In some cases when this is enabled it could result in issues. That is why he suggests turning it off.
Would love to see a similar video looking at gluetun for the vpn support.
I've never heard of Gluetun, I'll look into that. Thanks for the comment!
Love your videos! Is this just to cover different clients? Or did you stop using deluge?
I had requests for qBittorrent. Deluge is still my goto torrent client.
Awesome Tutorial! Love your video's. They have helped me out a lot. I had one question. Were you able to get any of the ARR apps to run through the container? Everytime I tried, it would lose connection to all the indexers and stop working.
Thanks for the support! I have sonarr, radarr, readarr, and a couple others all working great with Prowlarr, deluge, and qbittorrent.
Thanks for your video and nice guide! Followed your guide and choosed some of my nearest locations... but everytime this warn promps up when starting the container and wireguard is connecting - Unable to successfully download PIA json payload from URL. Do you have any clue?
hello, is there a list to change the endpoint from Nl-amsterdam to something closer to the states ... i wanted to see if there list so i can pick something closer or do i just used what you used?
Here is the list from PIA: www.privateinternetaccess.com/vpn-server
This is the json file that has all of them listed out. You will have to parse the file but the servers are all listed there. serverlist.piaservers.net/vpninfo/servers/v6
Is your folder structure adhering to the Trash-Guides atomic moves setup?
Doesn't look like it. Trash-guides specifies a different folder structure (/mnt/user/data/torrents/.....)
I missed your comment, sorry for the delay. To answer your question, no, but it's close. I have one share for toreents and one for media. I will update my demo server so that it 100% compatible.
@@AlienTech42 No worries! I was just curious since I was getting warnings in my *Arrs. Your setup videos have been incredibly helpful!
Thank you for this tutorial!
You are welcome! Glad to help.
love the tutorial, unfortunately any torrent i try stalls from the start then says error :( I am using torguard but i did make a port forward request with them and get a wireguard conf file, my guess is something isnt quite right there
well trying Pia now cuz of the sale, no clue how to get the conf file
The conf file is located in your wireguard folder on the server. IE: ServerIP\appdata\binhex-qbittorrentvpn\wireguard
The file is wg0.conf
Thanks for the love. I have not used TorGuard so I don't have first-hand experience with it. I would agree, something is not quite right but without seeing your setup it's hard to tell what exactly is going on.
Hey Good Video Guide can you maybe explane how to portforward with pia and qBittorrent will be gerate Thx for your work
You'll probably want to google how to do it with your router. Port forwarding is different depending on your router.
I've set up Unraid's onboard wireguard. Can I use that (setting network type to that configuration) in lieu of setting up the vpn for this?
Great question! The WireGuard within Unraid is great, but it is used to get a connection back into your Unraid box/network from the outside. It does nothing to protect you on your torrents nor does it give you a "local" IP from your desired country. It's just a secure connection back into your server.
Thanks for the video, I followed it to the letter... I just get connection timed out :(. Not sure what I did wrong.
Scratch that I had my LAN address set wrong lol
Thank you for your great content, it's exactly what i was looking for, I'm using PIA too :)
Unfortunately I can't seem to access the appdata folder, I did enable export on appdata share. I'm trying to access it from my network (using Mac Os), any idea why it's not working ?
In the appdata share settings under SMB User Access make sure you've given an account read/write access. I'm pretty sure this is not enabled by default. You have to create a separate user for shares access.
@@khanv1ct244 Thank you for your answer. I finally did get access to the folder by putting yes instead of yes (hidden). Now the problem is that the file are lock and I can't edit it. I have the read and write permission under SMB User access in the appdata share setting. But still I can't unlock it to modify it. It looks like a Mac Os problem, when i try to unlock the file it's impossible.
The Yes Hidden option allows the share to be accessible but it is not visible by default. You have to enter the full share location to access it. Changing the share type to Yes will make it so that it is visible when browsing the network. MacOS does work a bit differently, make sure the read/write access is enabled.
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Is there a way to confirm the VPN is working on the qBittorrent docker?
Go to the containers console, type curl ifconfig.io and check the ip address against your public ip. They should not be the same. If you don't know what your public ip is, go to whatismyip.com
Also another fun way, assuming that there are no other machines torrenting, you can go to iknowwhatyoudownload.com and if anything shows up there then it's leaking.
So should I wait and add qbittorrentvpn after I've added all my other apps? Right now, I don't have any apps installed, so I don't know what ports will be occupied.
Go ahead and install it now. Qbittorrent, Deluge, Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr are all defaulted to have ports that don't conflict with one another.
great video!
Thank you, glad to help the community.
I have a home network with a separate pc setup with unraid. I will be using a vpn for security, but where to place it? I think I will be using Surfshark, but should I place it at the router for full home network access or within a docker in unraid? also have a separate server for Plex.
It depends on what your end goal is. Personly I would run it within Unraid so that I can easily protect my torrent client/s and other containers. I used to run it at router level but my cell phones did not like it at all. (Two conflicting geolocations)
@@AlienTech42 : I only use PIA for Torrenting or split tunnel it for one of my web browsers (Mullvad), cheap and very reliable with a lot of endpoints.
Thank you, @@AlienTech42
question. if i have nordvpn i can use socks5 proxy server, and i also have pia ... since its already using the pia vpn should i also use the socks5 proxy server...
I setup NordVPN using the OpenVPN credentials method
I get the screeen shown at 7:44 indefinitely even though it shows the docker is started and theres no errors. Do you have any suggestions?
the "work around" that is posted in the comments is altered from the original. its just the bit at the end but none the-less its important.

How do you test the vpn connection to ensure its up and active?
Go watch my video on qBittorrent and TRaSH: ruclips.net/video/x5Y-yBH8si0/видео.html
I show how to check the VPN connection it in that video.
Thank you for the turorial ! I just noticed that I have an error downloading the torrent( errored under status), any idea why ? It does that with every torrent file I add
Fixed ! If someone encounter the problem, I did a mistake on the file location I wrote /downloads/complete instead of /data/complete :)
I was just going to have you check the paths but you beat me to it. Glad you got it working.
Thank you for letting me know. Glad you got it resolved.
@@PhoeniKids This helped me too! Just came to say thanks
how do you confirm its actually using vpn?
View, Logs, Execution log (tab on right side of qBit)
Somewhere down by line 20 you will find the external IP address, it should NOT match your WAN IP.
I have an updated qBittorrent video coming out this Saturday and I show a few methods to check that it's using the VPN.
What is the difference between this and deluge???
I have watch both of his videos and I suspect nothing is different other than GUI, its just what bit-torrent app you prefer.
@cam_934 Figured, I have deluge configured myself and after watching this video I don't see any difference on the functionality
Exactly! Both work, it just depends on what you prefer.
I use proton vpn can it be implemented properly
It can be done. I don't have access to Proton VPN so I can't give you specifics, but it can be done.

For anyone struggling, the code to add to the config file didn't work for me. After scouring Reddit I came across a similar line of code which did work:
