Hey all, a few things to note about this in 2022, coming into 2023: 1. Unraid now has the Wireguard - Dynamix plugin already built-in. No need to download it via the Community Applications plug-in. 2. When downloading the DuckDNS Docker container, make sure you have 'Host' selected for "Network Type". I'm not sure why, but mine kept defaulting to 'br0'. This created quite a few issues. 3. I'm not sure if my experience is the same as others, but right after you create your new Wireguard tunnel, make sure to turn the tunnel itself on! Juan's Wireguard tunnel automatically turned on after he created it, but for me (running Unraid 6.11.5), it had to be turned on manually. I spent about 10-15 minutes tinkering with it wondering why it was not working. It's because the tunnel wasn't activated. 😅 I hope this helps someone out there in some way, shape, or form!
I'd like to add that I've only got the tunnel to connect after I restarted my Unraid server and modem, maybe this could help someone save some time troubleshooting.
Great tutorial, at 3:02 remember to change the slider up the top from OFF to Autostart, or like me you'll be wondering why your VPN isn't working after rebooting your UnRAID box :D
I was seriously confused as to why my Unraid had issues with Wireguard, but this video brought the point across so extremely easily and with no padding, absolutely terrific!
Wish i found your video 3 hours ago. I did this using portainer and docker compose which is fine. However, I had to stumble through figuring out public IP, realizing that can change, finding duck dns and figuring all that out with your video. Just doing this through unraid and following your video would have been much faster. My main docker-vm is on a more efficient machine though so happy i figured it out cause unraid machine is first to shut down on ups etc and has less critical infrastructure vs my proxmox machine.
Thanks Juan very helpful, just to add since the video is from a year ago, WireGuard is now automatically installed in unraid, no need to install the package on the newer version of unraid, just go to settings>VPN manager
You sir, are a credit to your profession! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Set it up and it works great! Now my trip won't be so bad as I'll have full access to my server.
Thank you, so if my phone is in my local network and i have PIhole/Adguard set up, my phone has a adblocker that doesn´t drains my phones battery ? Sounds brilliant
Thank you so MUCH JUAN!!!! I have been battleing setting my VPN back up for 3-4 days just switched from a Nighthawk to a USG Unifi device and the built in VPN on adroid 12 is broke I was useing Openvpn on the nighthawk though that is no longer a option . also with your video I had it setup in 5 mins I would hug you right now if I could !!!!
You chose the "Remote tunneled access", and was able to access my server. But doing that I was unable to access any of my dockers, so I switched it to "Remote access to LAN", then it worked the way I want it. So I was curious, did you have another setup to access your dockers?
Great video and I can now connect to my unraid box from outside. However, all traffic stops there. I cannot get to the internet or any other device on the home network from the connected device. The Peer DNS server is set to my home router IP and I am using Remote Tunneled Access. Can you help me here?
Great vid, struggled with wireguard and ended up using it on a Pi running HA, having trouble with conbee passthrough running HA in Unraid but that's a different long and harrowing story 🤣, anyway set up using this vid and bang in first time, many thanks.👍
hello, any idea how to get unraid wireguard working with adguard home if both are running on the same subnet? The DNS will not resolve if both IPs are on the same subnet for some reason (but will work if you use another subnet or external DNS server). Thanks for your videos btw - very helpful!
Hey Juan! Thanks for this; worked a treat! My newb question is, should I be concerned about leaving the tunnel on AutoStart? Or should I disable it until I am getting ready to travel since the only time I need access is when I am not at home? Sorry for the stupid new user question!
very informative video. Very new to unraid and I'm loving it. So when connecting to the wireguard tunnel, which should I input on the URL, my local domain server name or the IP Address? Also, why do we need the duckdns for wireguard again? Just a noob
Great tutorial - thanks! Super concise. That said, i went through the steps and added my main (Win10) PC as a peer and then it lost network connection so I had to disable WinGuard on that PC to get it back. I probably need to follow it through again to see what went wrong.
I had followed this guide about a year ago and it worked. Not sure at what point it stopped, might have been during my network upgrades but it wouldn't connect. I have restarted this process and changed my Duck DNS and no connection. Port forwarding is correct. Any suggestions?
set up according to your instructions. In unraid I can ping the iphone. But there is no internet connection on iphone. cannot connect to any website. all browsers on iphone just hang and do not connect. how to fix ?
loads of tutorials like but but never any showing you how to map a drive share over the VPN. Can't seem to get that working unless the device is local at initial mapping.
Can i use WireGuard to Log into my Home-LAN remotely? Like connect to my VPN via WireGuard and then browse to my unraid-server and change settings n stuff?
hi, I tried doing the port forwarding but messed something up. no i have no access to my server. my browser tells me its a security risk and when i pass the risk it says error 404
Dear sir, I am new for Unraid, i copy your every step in this video but I didn't figure out how to use my iPhone to connect to Unraid server or shared file. could you explain more for it?
Does it allows to acces all the files thanks to the classic Windows File Explorer via internet ? And if it is the case, what type of access should I use ? Thanks!
If you're referring to mapped network drives from your "home" network, I'd be interested in that answer/confirmation too. Setting this up won't mess up anything else (parents desktop and such) correct?
Juan, this was great! I am still unable to get a validation on any of my peers. I port forwarded 51820 but when I check online to see if that port is open, the website tells me its closed. I am wondering now if I should just get a different router w/ Pfsense or something similar to manage my connections. Dealing with AT&T 5268AC Pace PLc is a pain in the rear.
Can I use this for torrenting too? Or do I need a separate service like Mullvad VPN for that? I'm trying to figure out how to use wireguard on a qbittorrent container.
This was working for me but randomly now some peers don't work. I deleted and recreated and they still don't work. I have two peers set up the same as remote tunneled access; one on phone and one for a travel router. The phone has full internet access with access to the network shares. The router only gives access to the internet.
My VPN connection is very slow. I have a fiber at host and client sites (1Gbps). But my Wireguard connection is capped at around 20Mbps. I changed MTU to 1472, but that didn't help... Any advice?
5 minutes in and out? Now THAT is how you do a video guide. Thank you Juan!

this comment saved me ty
You are a gentleman/lady and a scholar!
bro, i was scratching my head why is not working :D and just because tunnel was off
pog.

Great tip!
Unraid 6.10+ users: Dynamix Wireguard is now Settings -> VPN Manager
the true mvp of the comments section Thanks
Lifesaver!

Thanks Juan very helpful, just to add since the video is from a year ago, WireGuard is now automatically installed in unraid, no need to install the package on the newer version of unraid, just go to settings>VPN manager
Thanks, super helpful. I got it setup in a few minutes with your instructions.
Really nice video that is short and sweet! Two thumbs up sir!
Thank you Juan! Your videos have helped a lot with my Unraid server :)
One of the best technical explainer videos I've ever seen. Thanks!
Awesome tutorial dude. I was able to get set up within 15 minutes start to finish.
Thank you! This was very easy and setup was better than setting up OpenVPN.
Fantastic video Juan. Made set up so easy.
You sir, are a credit to your profession! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Set it up and it works great! Now my trip won't be so bad as I'll have full access to my server.
Smashed it in 5 minutes. Thanks for being direct to the point.
Excellent video, been using openvpn for a while but wanted to change over to wireguard and your tutorial was exactly what I needed. Thank you!

Did exactly how you said, but only difference is that I have a static public IP. Works like a charm, many thanks!
Thanks so much, clear and concise instructions for a first timer and i'm all set up and running.
hey juan, great video but i keep getting a "peer update required", is there a way to troubleshoot this, as the tunnel fails to work.
Great vid, struggled with wireguard and ended up using it on a Pi running HA, having trouble with conbee passthrough running HA in Unraid but that's a different long and harrowing story 🤣, anyway set up using this vid and bang in first time, many thanks.👍
Amazing video, subscribed :) keep up the good work!!
Thank you, Juan! This was a very quick an easy setup.
Very smooth and clear. The Vid and the Tut. Thanks.
Thanks, was looking for a video like this because the openvpn-as docker was deprecated

EXCELLENT VIDEO you go over everything so its easy to follow thanks again
Thank you! That was so much easier than OpenVPN and surprisingly so!
Thank you Juan. Will try this option. Openvpn As is not available anymore on unraid. So good alternative.
Wireguard is a game changer, I love it.
Thanks for the guide! Worked well for me
How do you setup up Server to server or Site to Site to have access to the remote server shares for offsite backup? Thank you for sharing
So much better than OpenVPN. Faster and actually stays connected all the time.
Yes it is.
Hey Juan! Thanks for this; worked a treat!
My newb question is, should I be concerned about leaving the tunnel on AutoStart? Or should I disable it until I am getting ready to travel since the only time I need access is when I am not at home?
Sorry for the stupid new user question!
thanks for the quality information!
It seems to work on my laptop, however when I add to my iPhone, it connects, but I have no internet access.
Another great video Juan thanks
Thanks a lot! Very good job on the tutorial. Straight to the point.
nice job Juan! Thank you!
very informative video.
Very new to unraid and I'm loving it.
So when connecting to the wireguard tunnel, which should I input on the URL, my local domain server name or the IP Address?
Also, why do we need the duckdns for wireguard again?
Just a noob
Thanks, that helped A LOT! Very good!
Excellent, Guga Technology
Muchas gracias Juan. Excelente tutorial.
Thanks a lot Friend! Realy like your Videos!
Great tutorial - thanks! Super concise.
That said, i went through the steps and added my main (Win10) PC as a peer and then it lost network connection so I had to disable WinGuard on that PC to get it back. I probably need to follow it through again to see what went wrong.
did you get it sorted? I'm having no luck.
A lot more cleaner and quicker than openvpn
Definitely
Great vid man thanks.

Smooth Tutorial ...... Thank you! so much
I had followed this guide about a year ago and it worked. Not sure at what point it stopped, might have been during my network upgrades but it wouldn't connect. I have restarted this process and changed my Duck DNS and no connection. Port forwarding is correct. Any suggestions?
Great tutorial! Now how can I have another container's traffic to go through that VPN tunnel?
thanks Juan !
Thank you, great video! What is the reason for creating different peers for different devices? Can different devices use the same peer?
set up according to your instructions. In unraid I can ping the iphone. But there is no internet connection on iphone. cannot connect to any website. all browsers on iphone just hang and do not connect. how to fix ?
Fantastic video.
loads of tutorials like but but never any showing you how to map a drive share over the VPN. Can't seem to get that working unless the device is local at initial mapping.
You're the man!! Thank you sir!!
Hey Juan, any suggestions for troubleshooting when the handshake keeps timing out?
Can i add a docker app to the wireguard VPN? Would be good to be able to route some docker apps through the VPN.
good video, but I do have a question, do you know if it is possible to put 2FA on the vpn, and if so how?
Can you Show how to Route pihole through wireguard? And great Tutorial;-)

Great Video !!!
Can i use WireGuard to Log into my Home-LAN remotely? Like connect to my VPN via WireGuard and then browse to my unraid-server and change settings n stuff?

connect to Unraid server or shared file. could you explain more for it?
Hello JuanMTech, Can I use cloudflare account instead of duckdns? and is it going to be the same setting? if not can help? Thanks...
Would you recommend tailscale over this?
Does it allows to acces all the files thanks to the classic Windows File Explorer via internet ? And if it is the case, what type of access should I use ? Thanks!
If you're referring to mapped network drives from your "home" network, I'd be interested in that answer/confirmation too.
Setting this up won't mess up anything else (parents desktop and such) correct?
What is the link I use on the client computer to access the NAS server?
great video Juan, can you maybe explain why i cant connect to internet from my laptop only lan when using wireguard
Juan, this was great! I am still unable to get a validation on any of my peers. I port forwarded 51820 but when I check online to see if that port is open, the website tells me its closed. I am wondering now if I should just get a different router w/ Pfsense or something similar to manage my connections. Dealing with AT&T 5268AC Pace PLc is a pain in the rear.
does this tutorial works behind CGNAT?
great video and easy explained without taking 10or more mins! Is it possible you do a video about paperless?
Great video
Can I use this for torrenting too? Or do I need a separate service like Mullvad VPN for that? I'm trying to figure out how to use wireguard on a qbittorrent container.

Please make a video on how to set up a site-to-site connection!
hi there, can you access the router when using this? it seems i'm able to access any ip address except the router.
My VPN connection is very slow. I have a fiber at host and client sites (1Gbps). But my Wireguard connection is capped at around 20Mbps. I changed MTU to 1472, but that didn't help... Any advice?
Hi, am I able to set up a VPN like this if I am behind a CGNAT? thanks
What happens if I don't have port forwarding with my crappy ISP?
