    for anyone who watches this video in the future and has the error of the IP not working when you input into your browser, make sure to do the following in unraid:
    go to settings->network settings-> "Interface Extra" -> add "tailscale0" into the "Include listening interfaces:" and click "apply".
    Fixed that issue for me
    NEW UPDATE: If you have any issues after the update, I'd recommend using the tailscale PLUGIN over the docker container (remove the docker container first then install the plugin)

    Hi man, thanks a lot for your tremendous support with UNRAID. I have a very basic question for you: which is the difference between having a VPN, like this and a reverse proxy ? Do we need both ? Are they alternative ? Can they work together and/or simultaneously? thx.

    • @IBRACORP
      @IBRACORP  3 года назад

      Hi Cristiano! There's a lot of info on that but in summary:
      Reverse proxy helps you make local internal apps accessible remotely.
      VPN allows you to secure your connection to your home setup and then, in this case, allow you to use the internet on your home server to browse rather than the device you're on.

    Thank you @ibracorp I just followed this tutorial and was able to easily setup Tailscale and connect to my Unraid server. Do you happen to have instructions for how to Enable HTTPS, which is an option in the Tailscale admin console? The main thing I don't understand is that it says to "run tailscale cert on the machine to obtain a certificate". I have logged in to both the Tailscale docker console and the Unraid console and neither one has the "tailscale" command available (I double checked by running "which tailscale"). Any help would be appreciated and thanks again for the tutorial.

    Thanks a lot for your detailed tutorial and all the work you put into this! As a newbie in networking, and not having an built Unraid server with me to test, I have one question:
    What can the use cases of using the Unraid Server as Exit Node be?

    • @IBRACORP
      @IBRACORP  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching Joelle!
      So one benefit of the exit node is that you might have a setup at home where you have an ad blocker such as PiHole filtering the internet for you, therefore your internet can pass through it with the same protection.
      Another of course is spoofing your home IP there may be times when you do want Tailscale to route your public internet traffic: in a cafe with untrusted Wi-Fi, or when traveling overseas and needing access to an online service (such as banking) only available in your home country.
      By setting a device on your network as an exit node, you can use it to route all your public internet traffic as needed, like a consumer VPN.

    Hey thanks for the great video easy to follow as always and a great alternative. The only issue I've come across is there doesn't seem to be LAN access when connected, I'm unable to access my containers through there ip's is that because I'll have to use the allocated magic name and there port number or is there a way to expose them for tunneled access like you have on wiregaurd?

    So I've been putting off setting up a secondary offsite Unraid server for remote backups. If I'm understanding this right, I'd be able to setup tailscale on each of them, and then the primary server would be able to replicate to my offsite server without having to setup any separate tunnels or setup any port forwards.
    The other question I have looking at this, would it be possible to be able to use this to so I can combine two home LANs into a single network (ie. so I can get onto my parent's LAN to remote access/manage things), with only having a single tailscale node in each LAN?

    I have been playing around with this more and am wondering how i would go about accessing the VM's (other than through VNC) that are hosted on my unraid server. For example: I'm currently utilizing NoMachine as my remote client/server and if i use the VPN baked into my unifi setup i just turn it on and enter the local IP address (or scan for computers on the network) and it works perfectly! BUT: When i try this using TailScale i am unable to connect - i have made sure i am connected to the exit node and everything appears to be connected correctly. So i'm thinking the IP address is the issue because it assigns my unraid server a 100.xx.xx.xx IP address and the "local" ip address of the machine i'm trying to connect to is a 192.168 IP --- There's got to be some crazy simple way here that I'm just not wrapping my mind around on how to get this to do what i need.

      @@IBRACORP Thank you worked like a charm! I just watched the video the first time with not continuing on in the documents. One thing that is probably stupid on my part when reading the docs i wasnt exactly sure how to add that second up_flag i tried adding another variable, etc.... Maybe want to put a note in the documentation for those of us that arent as familiar with unraid as we should that the UP_FLAG field when using the exit node and routing the entire subnet the UP_FLAGS: FIELD should read something similar to: --advertise-routes=192.168.1.0/24 --advertise-exit-node
      Who knows though i could be the only one that stumbled on that stupid simple part.

    Is this a more secure way than using open vpn and duckdns? Looks much simpler to set up.

      Yes it is since you don't expose any ports on your network!

    I haven't fully wrapped my mind around the exit node bit and what that can do for me.

    • @MatthewTietje
      @MatthewTietje 3 года назад

      Never mind. I figured it out. Example: Turning on "use exit node" on my phone connected to my work internet and the Tailscale network will cause my traffic to appear to the internet as coming from my exit node's location (in my case, my home IP).
      Thanks for the guide!!

      same but i don't have access to anything at all. Tried zerotier and had the same issue. I get this message:
      The device or resource (TailscaleIP) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)".

      @@IBRACORP Obviously not... I just don't see the need for something like this. I appreciate the guides, just curious about the use-case.

    Got it setup and was super easy but having a couple of issues: I can access my server just fine but i cannot use the servername i setup i have to use unraid -- which works but slight annoyance.
    Secondarily and most annoyingly I cannot access any of my docker containers by clicking the WebUI however if i go to tailscale copy the IP and :port number of the container then it works just fine its just slightly annoying to have to do that and not be able to use the WebUI.
    Lastly: I cannot figure out how to get my VM's to work with it and my main windows 10 VM i have now lost all remote access to even when deleting that machine from the tailscale UI.

      In Tailscale you can change the name of the device from Unraid to your server name. Then the hostname will work.
      Doing so then answers your second question, being able to put your hostname and the port of the container. Unfortunately using the Docker webui shortcuts from within unraid will always try the local address, no way around that.
      As for the final point, not too sure why that would be happening to be honest but it should have effect on that

    How to reverse -> echo 'net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.conf

      I know this is old, but in case this helps anyone. Run this to disable;
      echo 'net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.conf
