entire video summed up: go out there and start angel investing
I still don't know how to start angel investing
Look at my comment
@@kylejoyce Ok now know I can use either cash and time. But I'm still no closer to knowing how to START angel investing. Where do you find potential candidates? How do you approach them? What kind of legal protection is required for either party? My point was the video was titled "How to start angel investing" but that's not what the video is actually about.
@@SK0R092 yeah, the first thing is what value are you providing startups. And what type of startups can you provide value for? (Software, hardware, physical products) etc
Once you determine what skills you bring to the table scout platforms like product hunt. Identify weaknesses with startups where your value is aligned. Reach out and provide value up front for free. If you can build a relationship then you can negotiate a deal. If you can’t pass on to the next
@@SK0R092 You would find candidates through networking: university acquintances, attending start-up events, etc. Maybe if you are more established in your field you could try mentoring programs or getting to accelerator programs as a mentor. Also working in small growth companies is a great way to network with entrepreneurial people.
In practice, you can only invest in a company when they are fund raising which might not be all the time. When you find an interesting company you need to tell them they are something you might be interested in investing and show them you would provide them more value than just the money. This would be probably a very casual conversation.
When the company starts fund raising if they feel you were a prospective partner they will contact you. Legal stuff is usually handled by a lead investor, the main investor during the round, so you really don't have to worry about that. Angel investors will simply piggyback contracts made by the lead investor.
Angel investments are usually atleast 10k$ to keep things worth everyone's time but minimum ticket size can vary based on how established the company is and how much money they are looking to raise.
@@chrismoore180 this response is amazing thank you! You should be making videos 😅
Invest in 15-20 companies? How long should it take to evaluate a company worth investing capital in?
Shang Tsung giving financial advice is fire🔥🔥🔥
Justin you are my favorite RUclipsr!! Keep up inspirung us with this great work!!!
Hey Justin what's your Portfolio ?. would definitely invest in startup that you invest in 💯🚀. Make it Public 🤟🌏
Profolio lol. Justin invests in English grammar startups, sorry
I have had no luck investing in cryptocurrency,I actually invest on my own but my profit isn't always as I expect, sometimes I just keep loosing money 😭
@@vm1974-irkutsk loser
Don't just invest because Justin Kan invested. That's the same mentality that was behind funding at Atrium. Do your own research, I'm sure Justin Kan would recommend that instead.
@@tkdevlop Ah... it's still you but from another account
Great advice in under a minute 🔥🙌
Also you don’t have to just invest cash! You can invest time and resources in exchange for equity. Only thing is the value you offer needs to be a bottleneck for the company (building out design systems, creating customer development processes, building our data analytics dashboards, recruiting and building teams, building alpha future features, connecting with investors/advisors.. etc)
If you are offering value you can exchange that value for equity or cash. Just all depends on what phase of growth the startup is in. It’s all about timing
thanks for the comment! very useful
Justin keep up the great content, thanks for teaching me so much. :)
Justin, anything tech related you need to get done. I got you man. We got super innovative team.
Any angel investor here would be interested in DTC? Let me know, and I can pitch you my project.

* Invest time instead of money on startups - Justin Kan Great 👍 tip!
Exactly, everyone is missing the point here
Love it! If only I had more than a minimum wage job 😩

1. Have disposable income
When you have time on your side, everything is possible. Thanks for these tips! 💯

Everyone is missing the point in this video.
Cash and time are different forms of value. During your time investment if you are outputting value that has market value you can create an equity deal.
It doesn’t have to be class A or even B shares… there is so many ways to get startup equity
Good VIdeo, I like your stuff. Question though, what if we are a company and looking for Angel Investing, what would you recommend for a smaller Company from the Midwest?
Boom
You can be an angel investor too! Just go out there and give 15 people your money 💰! Boom!
👏
My mom bought few things for my small business (bakeshop), sadly one thing is missing and we ran out of funds 😢 badly need an oven (secondhand oven is a wonderful blessing). I'm a chef and baker. I need someone to fund my oven and some lil money for rent pls. I promise I won't let you down ❤💯 I just want to help my mom, she's working overseas and sick. I just want to feel her hugs and kisses before something bad happens to her. 😔
Thanks bb!

i just don't even know where to start...not just angel investing but any type of investing. I have money in the bank but i legit dont know how to invest and where to learn...
Any angel investors here interested in a Pitch? I am one of thr founders of RiftQ.
You look like the Rock, if he was white. Good advice btw
How much do I need to get started. I think I could afford to lose $250k
Hi. Are you an angel investor? If so, Id be honored to pitch my business idea to you. Thank you!
Hiding the secret in plain sight. I'll add target startups that you can add value to. Are you an expert in AI? Are you very well networked? You have to know what you have to offer AND you have to be willing to invest time and help, with no direct expectation of anything in return.
Asian Rock Dwayne Johnson?
How to how in youtube?
Hi Justin I have 20k in student loans I think the algorithm f*cked this one up for me ^_^
How much capital is typically required?
Alot. About 10-20 grand minimal.
No capital is technically required!!
1. Get moeny
2. Invest
Seriously, you gotta also be an accredited investor if you want to do direct angel investments. So it's at least have $200k in total compensation, annualized.
@damian yeah, but it's much easier to get $200k in TC, than $1M in the net worth, aside from the main residence. I just didn't bother to mention that.
Totally depends you don’t necessarily need that much cash or any cash….
You can get equity from startups from doing so many different things.
Look at the artist who painted a mural for Facebook back in the day. He got offered options them down. Today they would have been worth millions…..
@@kylejoyce Yes, but I think the point is in exchanging cash for equity, i.e. preferred shares.
@@JohnnyConcent yeah but nothing is wrong with class b or options…. Preferred shares aren’t even used in every angel investment
@@kylejoyce I guess from the standpoint of outcome in best case scenario there's no difference. And most of the time the notes or a SAFE would just convert. I would still think about the topic in the realm of exchanging cash for equity, rather than time or effort. You still have to spend effort sourcing the deals. And if you just go work for a startup, you have a very small likelihood of hitting it big. Whereas if you disperse a part of your net worth across tens of companies you get much better chances of going to the moon.
How are you elon musk?😮😂
how to negotiate terms etc? cap table, valuation, etc?
You are most likely not going to lead the round so don't bother negotiating all that. Just follow. If the valuation is not right, move on.
@@jakewjt any advice on how to find/source deals?
@@kml. Connect with fellow angels that share deals, if you are in tech - connect with other founders and get introduced to new entrepreneurs, participate in accelerator programs/demo days. If you are truly starting, I advise joining angellist and follow a couple of syndicates that have similar investment thesis to you and follow them while you learn and gather experience and knowledge on how to differentiate good from better deals.
You can afford to have Peter McKinnon help you with your vids. Thanks
