Great video. I was a regular train traveler between Bendigo and Spencer St 1988-1992. So many changes. Sydenham was a windswept station in the middle of nowhere, metro trains ended at St.Albans, level crossings still existed, Watergardens was a pipe dream (it’s amazing how rapid the development was in Sydenham 1990-2005) and the old Spencer St station still existed. Great video and on screen commentary. Thanks for sharing. 😉👍
Glad you liked it. Previously I did a video of the Sydenham region when the bridge was built next to the old station. You will probably find it amongst the videos here. Sunbury line should be towards the end. Maybe it will be of interest. Melbourne - Driver's View Trains ruclips.net/p/PLLtOIHp49XNDtaNr2H41P2th0S56s6bIH
😊😄 As much as you may prefer watching videos rather than doing school work, unfortunately you have little choice but to study hard if you don’t want to spend your life on the dole 😞
In the old days when Jolimont railway sidings where much bigger than now a lot of trains started a about 4 am on the morning to run express to the ends of the lines so that the service could be go on. Only a few lines had sidings for train storage and when they wern't large enough for the start of the morning peak.
Nowadays there are no Jolimont sidings but some drivers have their Home Depot at Flinders St Station. Sometimes a taxi is used to take one or more to a distant depot to start work, as is the case with Calder Park.
It has been many years since I was over that side of the Tasman, have had some great rides around Melbourne. Even on an excursion around some of the goods lines, including the closed line to Fitzroy via Royal Park. Cheers, Fred from Christchurch.
This was a great ride. I wondered about a line on the left for some time, further out that appeared not to be electrified but maybe in the dark, I could not see the overheads. Perhaps a freight line? Sorry I am deaf and can't hear all the wonderful sounds you all speak of.
When I was in Melbourne a few days ago I asked my driver which train he preferred to drive. He said the Comeng. Just more comfortable than the other two. And it was a wonderful view of deserted Melbourne, I believe. There could be more of those. I have over 1TB of raw video to check 😊 There are also problems getting the HCMT trains working properly.
@@tressteleg1 Interesting to hear the driver's comment. The Comeng must be a good all round design. In my humble opinion as a passenger, the Siemens are the quietest and softest ride but narrow with really hard seats and the Xtrapolis are very bouncy and harsh but better seats. The Comeng is the best of both of them I think. I thought there must be something holding up the HCMT trains. I haven't caught a train for so long, I must go into town soon. 😊👌
@@tressteleg1 I have a friend who is a train driver, and she says the same thing about Comeng trains. Much easier to drive than the Siemens, very responsive to the throttle, etc.etc,...
Comeng gearing sounds are unique, and the greatest I've ever seen - or heard. Hope I can visit Melbourne again before their withdrawal from revenue service. Great video!

I do love driver window views. Surprised by the lack of graffiti now. I remember the days where the ubiquitous *GJE + MAX* or *CAVECLAN* was on walls everywhere.
The public timetable will tell you just as easy as it tells me. Whether this empty cars run was standard, or a special following track repairs or a disruption the day before, I have no idea.
They were stored overnight in the city and head out to the suburbs to bring people towards the city. This run in fact starts taking passengers from Dandenong all stations to Pakenham. You will see this later.
Firstly, I’m not the driver. A friend makes recordings for me. It was built by Commonwealth Engineering, long before Alstom and EDI appeared here. In my videos I usually state when we are passing a similar design of train.
does a driver have to toot the horn at designated points on the line or is because they possibly see activity on the track in the distance such as humans, vehichles or animals maybe ? or is it too alert boom gate operators, station masters etc that your on schedule ?
Both. If you watch and listen at the same time, you will see a particular type of post being a compulsory whistle point. Whistles can be blown at times when the driver thinks a warning is needed.
It is a serious disciplinary matter if your train goes through a red signal. It could involve some type of re-training, or even being sacked from the job.
If you are referring to the green light above the red light, that is the normal indication for line clear ahead, run at maximum permitted speed in Melbourne. Don’t tell me it makes no sense, because it makes no sense to me either. It follows some American principles - enough said, I think!
I will have to try to find out for train drivers. Possibly it is an earlier start if a train has to be prepared for the road compared with when a driver is just picking up a train already in service. There may also have to allowance for the driver to get from the sign on point to the train pick up point. This could involve time to get to a more distant siding, getting there by regular train or sometimes by taxi.
People addicted to electronic toys 24/7 would have no idea, but sane people try to get about 8 hours per night. It refreshes the body and lets the brain function fully the next day 😄
Geez, St Albans has changed drastically since the days of three platforms and the old white swing gates with red flashing lights 😳😂 And has the Olex cables tower gone?! 😳
Removing all the crossings in a couple of months is quite impossible. Unfortunately that’s the problem with a city that is largely flat - no hills and dales to help with grade separations.
@@tressteleg1 Yeah that is true. They won't get em all but as long as they get rid of the worst ones, it should alleviate things a lot. I'm greatful some of the worst ones have been removed, with #1 being the Boronia 5 way intersection with a crossing slicing through, and #2 being the Gardiner station railway + tram crossing at which during peak hour I once stopped the car where it was, got out, grabbed a coffee from a nearby shop, got back in the car and had 10 more minutes before the gates actually came up. Trains had to rattle through that one at 10 km/h.
Certainly the tram/train ones were the worst. Some crossings are not listed for removal at all so I guess they will remain for a long time. From memory, last time I looked, nothing has ever been scheduled for the Sandringham line.
I will try that as explained in your later comments which for unknown reasons were in accessible for me to reply to. Of course while editing on iMovie, I can watch it at any speed I like.
By setting the bar too high, they are only getting people who are too intelligent for the job, and likely to leave soon after through sheer boredom. On top of that, from what I hear, working under present management is not exactly bliss.
Just different technology. Sydney’s later trains are even quieter in the cab simply because the power car is the second car, the first car being a driving trailer 😊
I took a ride in the second car of a newish Sydney A set and it certainly made a lot of weird electronic noises, not what you would think of as being quiet.
The location and size of sidings does not necessarily match timetable requirements so sometimes trains have to make what look like illogical moves to put the right number of trains in the right places for the start of service. In the past, and maybe still today, Sydney had regular empty car movements in the wee small hours running trains from one depot to another, so it’s not unheard off. Also a driver told me that sometimes after trackwork disruptions, at the end of service trains could end up in all sorts of places where they should not be. Empty car runs sort that out.
