Making Crucible Lifting Tongs for lifting 2000° crucibles of molten metal.

- In this video I will demonstrate how I made a new set of lifting tongs for my Salamander Super A10 Crucibles ( 8" x 6.5" top x 4.5" bottom )
They're easy to make and only require a few pieces of mild steel and a bolt. I used my milling machine a lathe and a TIG welder but you can just use a hacksaw some files and an inexpensive MIG welder to accomplish the same thing.
I used:
2x 1/2" x 3' round bar
2x 3/16" x 3/4" x 3' flat bar
1x 3/16" 1 1/2" x 1' flat bar
1x 3/8 16 - 1" stainless bolt and appropriate washers / nut. ( any bolt will work )

Those turned out fantastic. I appreciated the tips and suggestions for folks like me. I don't want to spend a fortune on high dollar specialty tools and jigs, especially with the current economic conditions. Harbor Freight has been labeled extremely substandard; however, I haven't had problems knowing full well what their limitations are. Great video and thank you. Have a great week. 👍🏼
Also, there's a channel called "Project Farm" that compares/tests various products against each other. I use those videos to figure out which tools are budget friendly, while still being "good enough"

Believe it or not when I was a junior or senior in high school (1969-1970) I participated in a two part design competition. The first part was to lift a crucible from a furnace and pour the molten metal into a mold. The contest required that one tool be used and that once lifted the crucible could not be set down. We had to draft the device, with dimensions, on Saturday at a University. All we were given was the size of the crucible and the furnace temperature. The second part was to design a wind driven pump to move water from a reservoir to a water fall which filled the resevoir.
After the contest I came to the conclusion that my tong design would not have worked. My pump design was better, but it too would not have worked. I received a trophy, which I kept

Man, I've been wanting to get into casting for a few years now. Watching other folks, it feels like I'm never going to have the space or the drive to do it, but watching your stuff makes it look within reach. It just seems like it would be so handy to be able to pour a piece of stock material for a machining project rather than go out and find stock close to the right size.
I quite welcome the inclusion of projects that are not casting. Don’t get me wrong. I very much enjoy your casting projects. I simply don’t have a good space to do it in so I have to default to welding and machining. My neighbors are too close to run the angle grinder at anytime but a narrow window of the day and generally I wait for them to go on a trip before getting heavy into a project. The mill and the lathe are quiet enough to run even at night if I close the shop door. So I was very happy when you bought the mill. Just as I would love to see Ron Covell tackle the live steam boiler Quinn from blonde hacks just built I would love to see you tackle other projects with your skill set. Different knowledge bases solve problems differently and I love to see different skill sets applied to projects.
Those are really nice. Only thing I’d change is the hinge pin. I’d machine a solid pin and thread the pin on one end and still use a welded nut like you did. I just imagine after awhile those threads will wear into the body of the tongs, or the other way around, causing excess slop.

A recommendation for shell casting.
A fluidized sand bed, it would make coating parts far simpler and Mark Rober has a vid i recommend checking out. And yea i thought about this a bit. Not going down the rabbit hole but my prime concern would be dripping off the coated material into the sand.

Imo Cutting disc is the legit tool for cutting as trad welder. That hydraulic is really sick for fine cutting

I like your tong design. I have just used Big Stack D design for my smaller tongs but since I brought I bigger furnace I need some bigger ones. Think Ill make a pair of these.
One thing i would've changed is the length of the "arms" that grab the crucible. Would've kept a little step where the pivot part of the arms is, so that it still engages with the crucible, locking it in place, but moved everything up another 3 cm. That way, in case of an emergency, you can use this at all times. As is, if you have to pull the crucible out and it's not all molten inside (which has happened to me a few times), you'll have interference between the hinge and the stuff in there. Other than that, 10/10. This is a great improvement over the OG one.
Unless you are doing fancy decorative pieces the solid beats perfect.

Thanks for upload nice looking tongs :) I add an extra support so i could use mine to pour with as well (mine are crude compared to yours lol)
If people look around there are DC arc welders that can tig also rather than going full blow AC/DC tig or multi, and when doing a form heat is a good way to get tighter tolerances but it can come with weakening the metal too.
I get it. If I had a milling machine, I would be using it too. Angle grinder works fine though.
Disc sander is a poor mans milling machine ,does wonders to square up things after grinder.
@@zumbazumba1 I mill aerospace parts and they always need orbital sanding, for example removing tags and sanding them smooth while maintaining flatness, squareness etc.

They poke into the crucible when open, so you may get molten metal on them or you may dislodge material into the furnace.

These are great - nice build. Thoroughly agree that any welder is valuable tool - I've had great use out of a cheap TIG welder and learning to weld is fun. If those are your first welds then you should apply for a job in the nuclear power industry they look amazing.

My buddy and I tried a different approach with the handles on the tongs so we could use it for pouring directly instead of a pouring ring. It takes two people to use it but it does let you streamline the pouring process. I can't say I'd ever do that again though, you've got to be careful that the tongs doesn't open as you tilt the crucible closer to horizontal. Not worth it.

Looking for a hobby mill and lathe. What are yours? How do you like them?
A very small tig tack will hold the nut in place, but will still allow you to break it free easily if you need to take it apart later for whatever reason. not much advantage here to welding it all around.

FACE REVEAL AGAIN!!!
Be very careful of cheap welders. They lack penetration and are rarely anywhere near the claimed amperage stated on the dial. Some cheap 200 amp welders deliver no more than 110 amps at maximum. The real problem is penetration. If you can't get a weld to penetrate, it can look great but have no strength. The first time you find this out could be a catastrophic failure. You can do tests by butt welding two pieces of steel then cutting through the middle of the weld to inspect the penetration. A decent welder should be able to penetrate at least 3mm into the join.
