- Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’
“Gollum Jade,” “Finger Jade”
This beautiful Crassula has green tubed leaves with bright red tips. It does well planted in containers. It is very sensitive to over-watering, so err on the side of under-watering this species.

This was one of my first succulents. I’ve managed to keep it alive for 5 or 6 years now and it looks like a small tree. I’ll cut little branches off of it to start new plants but I wanted to see just how big it would get. So far so good. It will start to turn yellow when it’s ready to be repotted but greens right back up. Very forgiving plant.
Can get to 3/4 foot
I was just looking at my Jade plant this morning and noticing how pale it is getting. It has been in the same small pot since I got it. THANK YOU!
This is such a great plant. I've learned to only water it when it's wrinkly. After that it turns a darker green and then gives bright little leaves. So cool to watch it grow.
This is the first time I've had the different types - Gollum, Hobbit & Ogre - explained. Used to think they were all the same but just varied from plant to plant. This makes much more sense to me. Thank you.
These are so neat! I've always thought they looked like coral. Can't wait to get one of these
Ogre ears were my first succulent ever. I love them
Such a simple yet visually dynamic plant.
Everyday a joy to watch your videos
I'm really loving all these short and to the point videos of so many beautiful succulents. Keep them coming!
My precioussssss. 😋 Thanks for such an informative video! Hopping into the series late. Gotta watch all the past ones now.
I love these because they look like a plant you might see on an alien planet in a science fiction movie.
This is the plant that got me interested in growing succulents. I have it in a bright window and it seems to be happy there. I give it a little water every now and then and it seems happy.
I love Crassus Ovata Gollum! The unique shape of these guys is awesome
*I just got my first one a few days ago* 👍
i have had my eye on Gollum for a while!
I love this plant so much!!! I don’t have to worry about it too much and it gives me a ton of babies. 🥰😁☀️
This is such a unique shape. It's fun to share with others.
I saw this yesterday and had to have it. It’s adorable!! Thank you for sharing!!🌿❤️
My mom has had this succulent and another crassula type for around a year now. She pretty much never touches them and they're still doing good!
I love how easily this propagates with cuttings!
This looks a lot like coral, very pretty!
Thank you for the tips on watering to help the succulent grow to its full potential! I love how it looks in arrangements!
It’s great to have a super source for information on succulents. I’m happy to use this information to have my plant thrive better.
I love this plant! Mine has gotten so big in its pot that it’s crowding the other plants. I did propagate one from a leaf - oh my goodness, it is SO CUTE!! Those tiny little fingers developing are adorable:)
I have a few of these and it’s good to know that they are different and that they are summer dormant. You always have such great info on these plants. Love this series.
This is one of my fav plants. It's so easy to grow and propagate easily too.
I love this succulent, and (fingers crossed here) it's grown really well for me!
I have this plant. I didn't know it would get that big. I always learn something new with this series of informational videos. Thank you.
I love the name of this succulent!
Looks like this succulent will go nicely as a contrast to all my low-lying succulents.
This plant is very forgiving. I have one and have tried to propagate but haven’t had any luck. They are amazing little plants
Yay!! I got this one last week. So this video came at just the right time for me.
Love this one. Going to the top of my wish list.
I have mine in an arrangement! Glad you said it works well in it!
Thank you! I just bought one of these today and it looks really healthy. I know that I over water so now I'm ready
I love this plan, especially the name.
I have this planted with a few other Crassula's indoors in an East facing window, its doing amazing there. Such an easy succulent.
One of my favorites to use in arrangements!
Love the way these are shaped. These might be a good plant for me since you say they are very obvious in their watering needs
A fun little plant.
Ooh, I've always wondered why my crassula ovata "gollum" was so dark green -- thank you! I snipped off a little branch a few weeks ago and now I'm watering the cutting, and it's so fun! It's so cute
This is different and I like it!
These cultivars make me think of a pixie “forest” with fairies dancing among them and other plants like Frizzle sizzle, a variety of Haworthias, and Living stones. Fun!
I live in a condo and someone left one of these in the common room window. 2 months later i noticed it was still there and so shriveled up and dieing. I took him and added him to my collection and now hes thriving and beautiful! Ive had him for about 7 months now!
I love the gullom jade I have one and it's doing great so far. It's long but it's still a baby and it's thriving .. it's sprouting little baby buds ❤
I have this succulent and so far have’t had trouble with it. Wondered why it wasn’t growing much and now know why. Thanks for the video!
Thanx I'm new but addicted to succulents and your info is invaluable to me it's not even funny I don't want to kill any of my plants so I watch your channel daily so thank you
We're glad you're enjoying the information!
I have the Gollem. I like the way it forms a bush.
Cute plant. Love it
This is one I have always loved because the shape is so funky! I still don't have it yet, but I will someday!
My Gollum is hands down my favorite succulent and he's the one that I pay the least attention to LOL I actually just took cuttings from him which brought me to your video, it's not the first time I've watched it but I wanted to make sure I did it correctly as to not harm my favorite plant ❤️ I was shocked at how big he got because he's the only one that's not under the grow lights!
Oh how funny! Glad he is doing well
Another super informative video!! Loved it!!
*Very nice 👌*
One of my faves. Easy to grow (for me at least) and so pretty. I love the visual interest it gives to combination arrangements as well. Thanks for teaching me more about caring for it. I want to keep mine as healthy as can be!
I have several of the various options of this one. Thanks for the tips on how to tell them apart.
Never thought about trying to propogate this one , going to try this one.
I have both the gollum and ogre ears! They're such wonderful succulents to grow
This one looks really cool. Hoping to add it to my collection. Thanks for another great video 💚
Lots of good information! Thank you
I always like when you talk about which plant goes with what other plant.
I will give gollum a try, it looks so cute.
Summer dormant...thanks! That explains it
Thanks for telling the difference between those three I didn't know what I was propagating
Looks like another one just got added to my wish list!
Hey I love this video. Thank you so much. I live in Texas so I think it will do well. Most of my succulents are outside in the shade. I’m just starting with my succulent Collection. I love your videos they are to the point and very informative!
Love them!
Cute one, will have to be on look out for this one
This plan looks cool😍 looking to get it in my succulents collection
Thanks for the great info on these cool little succulents. Bought them and forgot what they were called. I think they are easy to grow (so far!)
I love Gollum jade! Mine is a baby, being trained to be a future bonsai. Once I learned from you that jades are summer dormant, I assumed the same for this one and stopped watering so often. I was worried it wasn't getting enough water since it was living outside all summer and about three of the leaves yellowed at the tips. I watered it twice weekly but the yellow didn't go away...well, now I know that they do that with enough sun! Thank goodness for Bonsai Jack soil that has your back when you water too much! 😥😁
I would love to see the 3 different varieties side by side! Not sure which ones I have, but they are all cute! Thanks for the video.
I have a number of these because mine seem to grow constantly and while I root a lot of succulents from leaves, this one seems to create such full offshoots and fairly quickly, that I just wait until my arrangements need to be cut back and I'll cut off some of the offshoots. For a while I keep the original and use what I cut off in a new arrangement. But eventually, I put the original into one of my propagating pots (outside in the summer in NY; in the basement w/grow lights in the cooler weather) because it seems that the original stem gets too thick and a bit leggy (but it still gives off beautiful new offshoots, so don't toss it!). And then I use one of the offshoots in the original arrangement. Thanks for this and ALL the wonderful videos. These vids are the perfect length and so packed w/info. I totally agree that Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ should be part of everyone's collection because it's so easy to grow and so unique in shape that it will always add interest, even when it's just green.
I just bought one! Thanks for the heads up about toxicity. I will place it outside of my cat's reach.
Just got one little plant! I can't wait to see my Preccccccioussssss grow :D
Thanks. I’ll keep an eye for this 1.
I have a couple of them, and so far, they are doing well.
Have Hobbit not Gollum but will get Gollum real soon glad to know care for Gollum is same as Hobbit. So glad about all the info on succulents that I am receiving through your videos. A real thank you.
Just bought one today! So excited. Thanks for the info!
Cool looking one. On my wish list. I like ”easy to grow”!
I have both the Gollum and ogre ears. They look absolutely beautiful now we are heading into fall. The ogre ear is super red and the Gollum is an orange-y red. Such fall beauties!
🌱❤️
I have this outside and it does well, I usually wait for the leaves to tell me that it needs water. I'm now anxious to try to grow it from cuttings, thanks!
I have a big bush of gollum. For some reason, my Jade's are the only succs I have that get mealy bugs. It's gotten burnt outside, had mealies eat away at it's structure, and been in the wrong soil too long but survived. Now I've just got to do another mealy treatment and hope it starts to thrive again!
Good to know the differences! I’ll have to look for this one.
Great information,. I wish I could display a photo of mine. The finger like leaves on mine started growing straight up but now some are too heavy and have fallen over. They still feel pretty solid and have more growing and branching off of them. I also notice some brown like scratch marks on them but seem to still be solid. Are these two things (falling sideways and brown scratch like marks) bad or just part of the life cycle?
I saw a leaf fell from the mother gollum and bring it inside to propagate. It's now showing a sign of success.. a tiny little baby is trying to emerge! 😊
I just checked the Crassula Ovatas I have...probably all from the same original plant...but think they are Oger Ears, as the top faces forward. As one of your other members said, "I would like to see the 3 varieties side by side". Will look for them next time in town. Thanks for the great info on all these succulents. I'm learning a lot and taking so many notes!
I thought I had a Gollum jade but now after learning the differences I believe I have an Ogre plant. After having a few more dry days, I have noticed the color change of him. Very pretty!
I did NOT know there were three! Now I’m unsure which one I have 😂😩 (I think Gollum...) I LOVE LOVE this one. I have one I bought as a tiny baby from The Succulent Source 4 years ago and it’s so big now, I’ve repotted it twice. It’s beautiful and several leaves that fell off have made their own little babies that I’ve potted up as well. One of my favorite plants for sure! ❤️
One of the few I don’t have. Great video!
Always glad to hear when it is a plant good for beginners! Also glad it can do well indoors, although that red color may be lost.
That was helpful. I just bought one of these and divided it up into 3 separate pots. Haven't killed it in the first month, so I'm doing well!
I love Gollum, but my favorite is Ogre Ears!! I have them all and have been keeping them indoors by themselves. For some reason I haven’t put them into arrangements! Thanks for the great idea! Great video full of new information for me!
The plant does look like Gollum fingers! I looked it up and it grows into a sort of tree.. how different! 😀🌵
I got this one recently and I love it. It looks quite alien and its already growing new tiny leaves. I have it in a balcony facing west/south-west. Waiting for the leaves to start to wrinkle is the safest way to know when to water it. Cassidy, I love your new videos. Don't forget the closeups thouth. 😉
Yes! We'll be doing that for the next set we do in a couple months. I was trying to keep these simple to produce so we could do a lot this month. However, not including close ups was definitely an oversight.
And one we'll remedy in our next round of videos. I wasn't able to make the changes for this set, but we are planning to re-release them in October with close ups.
In the meantime, you can see a close up of the plants here:
www.succulentsandsunshine.com/types-of-succulents-plants/?.com&
Thanks again ... have several types ... always do a walk thru after your videos to chk on what I do have and where I have them located and relocate as needed ... nice arrangement as usual ... thanks !!!
I uesed to have this one but ended up giving them away as part of my move from my apartment to where I am now. I had to get rid of a lot of plants. I reall liked these, though, and I might get some again after winter is over. Thanks, Cassidy!
Thank you for the information. I do not have this one but will look for it.
Gollum my fav
With the visuals of Gollum.in my head, I really feel this name is unfair. Such a pretty columnar succulent
Maybe it's supposed to look like gollum's fingers? I think its cute!
@@elliesyth4608 valid point, Ellie!
Thanks for the tips. I love this plant but I am just learning about the sun and water requirements. It’s a keep and I’d love to see it as a bush!
I think the one I have is a hobbit based on your description. Haven’t had much luck with leaf propagation, but have had a lot of success with cuttings.
It’s doing well on my porch!
