    The Jade plant is a very popular houseplant because it is super easy to care for. Perfect for beginners or the forgetful gardener. They thrive in most indoor environments, making their lush green leaves a great addition to any home or office. Jade plants are a species of succulent plants in the genus Crassula (pronounced KRASS-oo-luh or KRASS-uh-luh) and family Crassulaceae (pronounced krass-yoo-LAY-see-ee).
    Native to South Africa, there are about 200 species of jade plants and 1400-1500 Crassula varieties. Jade plant does not require much care, but if you treat it right, it can last a lifetime. You can train Jade plants into a Bonsai, and it can also grow into a large, beautiful bush. Many public and private places are decorated with Jade plants.
    Crassula Ovata
    The Crassula Ovata is the most common type of Jade Plant and is also known as The Money Tree, The Friendship Plant or the Lucky Jade. It was the original variety of the Jade Plant that was first discovered. One of the most popular varieties in circulation today and also the fastest growing of all the Ovata cultivars. They get their name from their meaty jade-green colored leaves that are usually tear-shaped, oval-shaped, or wedge-shaped.
    Incredibly hardy and said to bring good fortune and luck according to the Feng Shui. When stressed the leaf tips can turn a pretty reddish pink. In winter look for cute pinkish white flowers. People consider it ideal for planting near coastal areas. It is also used as a divider or display in gardens when trimmed and shaped properly.
    Crassula Arborescens
    Crassula Arborescens (pronounced KRASS-yoo-luh ar-bore-ESS-enz) is commonly known as the Silver Dollar Jade, Blue Bird, or the Blue Buddha Bush, it is known for its silvery light blue leaves. The blue bird jade plant has more circular leaves than other common jade plants. It is a slow-growing plant, much slower than its cousin the crassula ovata. When exposed to more sun the edges leaves produce bright red to burgundy tips. The flowers that grow from its tips are long lasting and appear during the autumn-winter period. It can grow as a large bush outdoors or can be kept more small and compact in a container.

    Great info, thanks! One important thing to note as our climate warms…. I live in the desert SW (zone 9a) and it is important to know that the Crassula Ovata CANNOT take the prolonged heat of the summer months here! I learned the hard way when moving here from LA with a giant plant that I had had for many, many years growing outside. When I moved here it grew fine until temps were over 100ºF every day-after a couple of weeks it turned to mush and my 25 year old plant was reduced to a puddle in just a week or so.
    Portlacaria Afra, on the other hand, does fine and even thrives in very hot weather.

    Thank you for an excellent guide to Jade plant varieties. We have one that we got as a tiny little thing around 30 years ago. Thanks to your tutor video, I now know it is a Gollum variety. The thing is about 5 feet tall with a trunk as large as lower leg. Basically has become a small tree. We've had it so long, I think I am inspired to propogate a few of them. Thanks again.

    I have a succulent as a gift was told it is called a flapjack also included snake plant and many small plantings only info was full sun. Never had succulents and not sure if the thick white powdery substance on tall stem, 2 to 3 ft tall and the rounded flat puffy leaves are powdery mildew and what genre is this.

      @moodyblooms  3 года назад +2

      It is most likely a Kalanchoe luciae or Kalanchoe Thyrsiflora. Both are very similar and are commonly known as flapkjack or paddle plant. The white coating is farina and helps protect the plant from direct sun. You definitely want to leave it on the plant. They are typically green and can turn beautiful shades of red and orange when exposed to full sun. Hope that helps!

    I received a sturdy rooted droopy-topped flowering crassula - and wonder if the small leaves are good for propagation...and should I cut the flowering stems to try to root them also, as with other succulents?

    • @moodyblooms
      @moodyblooms  3 года назад +1

      I do, but sometimes they don't always take. I have better luck with the actual leaves. It is def worth a try!

    Wow so glad I found this video. I have a large (probably 4'-5' tall) Cassola, Gollum jade plant. I didn't know it was going to get so big. So where I planted it the smaller plants in back of it can't even be seen. The trunk on this plant is a good 5" across in places. Can I just cut it off at the ground and replant it with no roots or do I have to dig it up? By the way I very much like this plant. It looks like a giant bonsai, I just don't like where I planted it. Now how was I suppose to know this little 99 cent plant, was going to turn into a mean green mother from outer space. (Ha Ha) Little Shop Of Horrors!

    • @moodyblooms
      @moodyblooms  3 года назад +2

      Wow that is a good size trunk. You can behead it, but make sure you let the end callus over before planting in soil again. Otherwise the stem may rot. Since it is a larger stem it make take longer than the typical 3-5 days to callus over.

    • @agnediciuniene9861

      I would rather dig it up with roots.

    I have a new plant that was given to me. I am rooting leaves but one has not rooted as yet. Should I lay the leaf in the pot where I put the other leaf that is slow but thriving.

    • @moodyblooms
      @moodyblooms  3 года назад +1

      Not all leaves will root. It has to be perfectly removed from the mother plant, and even then sometimes they just don’t take. I find some take longer than others if they are thicker. Placing it in the pot is fine.
