    I’ve just become a succulent dad and I’ve never been big into plant keeping but I was at Lowe’s and saw this poor baby succulent half dead (leafs were completely dead, soil was so dry just touching it made it fall apart, leafs were dropping). I irrationally bought it, bc I kinda felt connected to it. I replanted it yesterday, debrided the dying leaves and watered it. This morning it’s at turgent and full of life :)🌵

    Thank you so much for the awesome video! I can never keep my indoor succulents alive. They mostly end up rotting which I never understood because I got the "potting soil" meant for succulents and rarely watered them. Like once every two weeks I would water them and they would still rot. I will definitely be purchasing the rock mix you shared in the video, I think that is the biggest issue. Lastly I didnt realize by spraying them they would have smaller roots so I will be changing some things. Thanks again!

    You said not to spray them to water. Should I just pour water in soil instead? How often? Also they like light, but do they like heat? I don’t have any windows for them to sit near. My windowsills are small. I may need to put them outside to get sun instead.

    • @Succulentsandsunshine
      @Succulentsandsunshine  4 месяца назад

      Yes, I recommend pouring water on top of the soil and soaking it completely each time you water. You can get more details on how to water here:
      succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-watering
      Many succulents can tolerate heat, but most won't thrive in temperatures above 100°F for very long or very well.
      If you don't have great space on a windowsill, you can grow them using grow lights. All of my indoor plants are undergrow lights and don't get any window light. More details here:

    I bought a glass bowl succulent pot the other day and just now thought "wait, how do I actually look after this" and found this, where you say don't use a spray bottle and don't keep it in glass :')
    So, uh, just to clarify: if I'm a hermit who stays home every day and can just spritz them with water regularly, is it okay to do that? I'm going to buy a grow light as soon as I can as I don't have good window facings in my room so I can't get it high levels of sunlight unfortunately

    • @Succulentsandsunshine
      @Succulentsandsunshine  2 года назад +1

      You can definitely grow succulents in glass, but it's much trickier.
      Succulents need to be watered using the "soak and dry" method - not sprayed with water. Learn more about watering in this video:

    Idk but putting them directly by a window doesn't seem a good idea. My poor baby Franklyn got a nasty sunburn of sorts last summer... I put all my succulents by the window but somehow the light must have been too intense because he developed red spots and started to look kind of burned and sick. Now I put my babies in a well-lit area but NEVER directly by the window, as it gets too cold for them in winter and they do like warmer temperatures and because the area is too bright in summer months... Has anyone experienced similar things?

      Full spectrum growlights are cheap. A solid set up should cost you in the neighborhood of $40 maybe $50 if you tack on tax and shipping. It's weaker then direct sunlight so you go work for 8 hours and it will be about half that in sunlight. We all know how expensive pretty pots can be so it's really not to big of expense. A 2ft grow light can cover easily take care of a few dozen succulent and hell get a 4ft and you'll be able to make a mini garden in your home lmao But your neighbors might think you're doing a little more then just succulent if you know what I mean 🤣 like mine

    I bought two succulents to keep me company during the lockdown, and one of them turned out to be not as healthy to begin with, while i was driving from the store two leaves fell off, so by the third day at my home half of the leaves had fallen off. I also add gravel on the bottom of my pot for better drainage and dont water them as frequently and now I'm a proud owner of happy lush alovera plants that are taking over all my space haha.

      Two weeks might have been not a problem. You should touch the dirt and make sure it's dry and not moist on your finger. For watering, they do like it. Depending what kind, think of the first of the month. That's when I water mine. It just rained here for a week, and all my cacti outside got soaked. They have very well drained soil though, that's the key. I shelters some... But the water isn't what I worried about. The more important thing is that they get airflow, and as much sun as possible. :-)

    My mom has two succulents growing together in a plastic pot with no drainage holes, and both are still going strong lol. Guess it might be due to us living in a dry place and her not overwatering them, but these things can be really tough to kill sometimes lol.

    I bought a succulent months ago and I placed it in a cute small bowl without a drainage hole because Ill be putting it on my desk. I read a lot of articles from websites to learn how to take care of it that's why I water them with limited amount only on Sunday mornings. I think my succulent is fine because it just gets enough water. But when I watched this video, I learned that succulents stretches when they didn't get enough sunlight, which is happening to my succulent right now. I'll try to open my window more for the sunlight to go in. Thank you for the tip!

    Friggin rotting. I don't have another pot it's what they came in. 😫 also I think I burned mine. I put a bigger one in front of my sunniest window, I'm in Houston, Texas and its HOT. But in the shade she was dying anyways so I put her in the sun and she got crispy. Ool.

    I've been keeping succulents for a year. Apart from this one rot incident, I've never had any problem with repotting and propagation. It's amazing how they withstand. The only thing I struggle with is...sometimes I had to keep my plants away from me so as to not feel compelled to water them too often...

    In my recent first attemp to make a terrarium, I repot my succulents in a pot without drainage holes. The moist cactus mix soil started to make one of them looking ''dizzy''. I took them out to the balcony, and sun made his job right. Now they look great and alive, but i water them once a month just in case, haha... :D

      I'm having really good luck with this grow light I bought from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076CSWS6Y/ -- I don't know that this specific brand is all that special, necessarily; the main thing is, you'll probably have better luck with something close to professional grade and on that order of brightness. The 600-watt light I bought has way outperformed the little 16-watt clip-on lights I tried when I first started with succulents a few years ago. (And I knew there was no way the clip-on lights would cut it in my basement apartment.)
      The description says you should have it a meter away from your plants so as not to burn them, and it actually did burn my ZZ plant from even farther away than that, but that seems to be over-cautious for succulents -- right now the light is hanging about 14" above the top of my tallest plant, and they're just drinking it up, staying nice and compact and turning colors they never did at work. The jade plants now have lovely burgundy edges on their leaves, the echeveria agavoides is keeping it's low, round shape, and the sedum adolphii that was just getting by at work even in a south-facing window is now getting a nice blush on it and growing new stems. The only one it's almost too much for is my Christmas cactus.

    I have been using a self made mix of organic cactus/succulent mix, small pine bark and perlite for repotting my succulents and it's been working quite well. I always use a water meter to check moisture content as the upper layer can be very deceiving in reading the overall water level of the soil. Give your indoor succulents as much southern light as possible and turn them often.

      It's possible the leaves are drying up, but also possible they are getting too much water. It's hard to say without seeing them.
      Check out our course for more information on how to propagate and to upload photos to diagnose what's happening:
