As someone who got into mathrock without knowing, and only recently is learning about the genre, this is one of the only places I find new albums. Long sentence but in short, thanks!
Here's some scales that can use all the open strings for FACGCE, other than C major, F major and A minor. D natural minor G Dorian E Phrygian A Phrygian F Lydian C Mixolydian E Locrian E dorian b2 And E eight tone spanish. Add a capo and you're set!
I hope I get to understand how these scales work when I finally tune my guitar to FACGCE, I'll be in standard for a while, cuz I'm still learning the basics chords and that sort of stuff
I've been learning guitar for about 6 months now and still have no clue how scales work. Am i just supposed to play every note in that scale in order and call that training? How do they help? I've tried to get into them but have no clue how they work let alone where to start
@@paulalangadan8375 basically all of these has the same notes but different root notes (starting notes) so it could sound different in different keys. I apologise if this doesn't make sense. Others are free to correct me if I'm wrong.
My middle school band teacher was the guitarist and trumpetist for colassal. I remember the day he showed us his music in class. It's what got me Into math rock and emo especially hearing my teacher who played trumpet like me make such beautiful music
This is very cool! I'm honored you took the time to figure out the Colossal song. Though it's not exactly the same, it's very close, and I think your version might be a smoother way to play it! Particularly that end lick. I will have to try it. Cheers!
Thanks. That is actually my cheapest guitar! Haha. I've been tweaking my sound so thay may have helped. Also all the parts are double tracked and panned left and right to give a thicker sound.
i got into math rock years ago with clever girl and rediscovered the genre after stumbling upon yvette young/covet on instagram. finally wanted to have a crack at trying to play these songs and wow. difficult isn’t even close to describing how hard these songs are (especially as a beginner)!! my fingers are on fire but maybe one day i’ll be able to play pelagic! and Steve you are so incredibly talented and your beginner series is amazing, i hope you never stop making videos!!! cheers from Canada 😃
For pelagic, Yvette taps the 12 on C and G then slide to the 14th fret. If your having trouble with the song try it like that. It was a little easier for me that way.
hey man! nice video as always, always is a pleasure get a look into your channel. I do not know if you know it but in case you can, you can tell me in which tuning is the song Charybdis from "Covet" I will try to tab some of that. Regards From Argentina!
take dadgad and drop/raise it some random amount! (russian circles has a lot of stuff in C#G#C#F#G#C#) note: may require a long neck or really fat strings
I tabbed it myself. If you listen to the intro there are a few variations of the way that Pat plays it, so for this tab I just made a general summary of all the variations, if you get me.
I'm considering to use this tune but I never thought that "never meant" was tuned in FACGCE.. I only tuned my guitar in DADGBD just experimenting and I got some new riffs with that tune. But, hey. I like the last song! :)
How about DADF#AE? I heard Yvette Young playing in this on Shibuya!!! Also, I've never really made any progress on playing guitar for a whole year besides dexterity. I want to learn more about how to play, so would there be any ways you would suggest for me to learn, like note scales, pentatonic scales, reading sheet music, etc.? My price range for any paid stuff is 10-40 USD, as I'm kinda saving up for a gift.
Hey, Philip. You shouldn't be breaking any strings tuning up as it's only up a tone E to F (6th string - thickets string), D down to C (4th string) and B up to C (2nd string). Hope that helps, and thanks for the question.

Idk if you might have found it by not, but if not check out r/mathrock. Lots of good recommendations and hidden gems on there.
ur riff was the best
Thanks, Ben. You are too kind. haha

My man's included free tabs for all the riffs, what a legend.

Your riff was clean as hell, dude. Very nice playing 🤙🏽
ugh yasss that last riff was dank af
Literally your the reason why I got tele and practice every day maybe one day ill be good enough create amazing mathrock and midwest emo.

Also, your riff is dope!
Agreed, sounds incredible like this !
I saw Tim on the thumbnail and was expecting belle and Sebastian. Crocodile was a nice surprise.
That last riff was good shit
Thank you! Yeah, I think there is a bunch of songs on that record that are in FACGCE, it has been too long though so I can't remember exactly.
Isn’t it CGDGBD tho?
@@Jeeyoa if I sit still is. Belle and Sebastian is facgce
I enjoy the most the last riff. Keeo up with the good job!
Thanks, Diego, that's awesome indeed!
You seem like such an interesting human. Would love a video of your back story. Cheers.
The tone for the new guitar is definitely more fitting for this imo. Sounds great dude 👌
Thanks. That is actually my cheapest guitar! Haha. I've been tweaking my sound so thay may have helped. Also all the parts are double tracked and panned left and right to give a thicker sound.
That original at the end is truly awesome
Thanks! It's a pretty simple idea thag perhaps looks complicated, i think it sounds nice though. I'm working on a full song of it.

The tone is soo good lovin it 👌👌
I normally just call it the ‘Let’s just forget’ tuning
You’ll know why

Dude, I love covet, and pelagic, never knew it was in FACGCE as well!! Good work man

Hey Steve! Man I love all these riffs, do you have the tab for your riff at the end?
Cheers! I think there maybe a link in the description to the tabs?
Classic! Good job, keep moving forward, Steve :)
hey man! nice video as always, always is a pleasure get a look into your channel.
I do not know if you know it but in case you can, you can tell me in which tuning is the song Charybdis from "Covet"
I will try to tab some of that.
Regards From Argentina!
Hello, and thank you!
I don't know what tuning Charybdis is in, but I'm relatively sure if you do a google search you'll find something.
I play in this more than standard
Pretty cool. I've always been one to play in standard but recently I find myself experimenting with different tunings.
Same^^
Planning on making a DADGAD one?
Can do, I think I can make a bunch of these :)
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock Sounds like a fun plan mate! Best wishes ^^

Would love to see you play some Daijiro Nakagawa’s riffs!
More colossal please!!
Great video man 👌
You are one of my favorites. Im thinking of investing into a fender Nashville Deluxe to get into and play math rock on, what are your thoughts?
Thanks. I think any tele would be fine :)
does anyone have a tab for Hot Probs? how did you learn it Steve?
Any other TTNG songs with that tuning
Did you figure the Colossal song yourself, or do you have a source for tabs?
I tabbed it myself. If you listen to the intro there are a few variations of the way that Pat plays it, so for this tab I just made a general summary of all the variations, if you get me.
I'm considering to use this tune but I never thought that "never meant" was tuned in FACGCE.. I only tuned my guitar in DADGBD just experimenting and I got some new riffs with that tune. But, hey. I like the last song! :)
Only the 2nd guitar is tuned to that. The 1st guitar is in FCCACF. It's a lot funner than the facgce part in my opinion
@@eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeo uhm.. the secon guitar part was lead and the first guitar part was rhythm? Did I guess right?
@@eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeo abit late but you can play the first guitar in FACGCE with a capo on 3rd fret and move the riff down 1 string.
Colossal what makes this song great!
they are such a great band!
Are you planning on making this into a series? If so, you should do an episode on DADF#AE.
I'll do some more for sure. :)
doesn't merchant ships have some songs in that

What effects are on the guitar during the never meant portion?
If my memory serves me correctly. I was using chorus and reverb.
Just out of curiosity, how many years have you been playing?
Around 15 years
Please make tutorials for those songs as well!
Pelagic was by far the best here!
Awesome! It's such a tough song to play, I had to slow it down a little to be able to play it in the end! Haha.
You just got a subscriber :) 👍
Learning Pelagic gives me really some mental issues x) i just don't get that slide notes down ... and the speed in general is mentionable
For anyone that digs this tuning, check out Diastole and Systole by the band Hawking. Both those songs vibe fuckin’ HARD
So you tighten E into F & B into C?
Yes, that's correct, and FACGCE the D string tunes down a step to C.
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock so what string gauge are you using? I use to play 0.10-0.46. I worry if the strings might snapped off
@@baradalamasa They'll be fine, considering they're not worn out. I use a similar gauge set myself.
that's an interesting Peavy guitar
It's a Peavy generation. A budget beginners guitar. I've had it for almost 15 years. Haha
Let's Talk About Math Rock I have that exact same peavey guitar.I’ve had it for about 10 yrs and just started using again it honestly sounds good
Do i need to change string gauges to tune up?
Hello. Thanks for the question. I wouldn't bother just for two stings and it's only a slight tune up.
You should do Astronauts by Park Jefferson
How do you tune up without breaking a string?
Hey, Philip. You shouldn't be breaking any strings tuning up as it's only up a tone E to F (6th string - thickets string), D down to C (4th string) and B up to C (2nd string). Hope that helps, and thanks for the question.
space x t shirt from origami angel as well
Best for last
Do dadfad
Have everyone listened to the new American Football track with that girl from paramore?
It's amazing
I literally wanna be like yvette young, but like idk where to start on math rock and my mtheory knowledge isnt that good
1:33
Show me the CGDGBD
Have you tried DAEAC#E? It's the same tuning but a tone higher.
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock When I use a capo, yeah. Sometimes ill just capo songs lower so i can sing to them
How to math in half step down
D# G# C# F# A# D#?
You can't tell me you don't game on that setup
TTNG walked so modern musicians could run. (and modern musicians are still trying to catch up)
I'm not skilled enough to play any of these so I just started trying to write the most generic Midwest emo song of all time instead.
Yea sure save the best for last but not give ANY DETAIL
