Thanks for the upload. I’ve been waiting for this video to come up! Good one coming from Viltrox
You and me both Mark :) I'm surprised I was the first 😅
I think your photos really shine at this focal length I loved the image examples in this video, Damien! Would love to get my hands on this lens
I'm loving it
Merry Christmas Damian! Finally, what a pleasant surprise and great review!! We've all been waiting for this elusive lens and looks like it won't disappoint. Looking forward to your comparisons to the Samyang 12MM
Can't believe how long we've waited for this!
Finally, been waiting for ages for this lens review to come out.
Finally!
At last! Thanks a lot for reviewing this long-awaited lens!
Thanks!
Seems like just what I was expecting it to be! This is great although we might have to wait until next year.
Definitely 2022, minimum 🤣
Cannot wait for this to be released. Great video and I'm hoping to get my hands on one soon so I can review it myself
Brilliant Ricky
@@DamianBrown hoping to get on your level one day. Sorry I just subbed. Should've subbed a while ago.
@@TwoTimesRmedia thank you!!!
Great review as usual Damien. It sounds tempting. I own the Fuji 10-24 previous version and was thinking about selling it for a little cash but this lens costs about as much as I would get for the 10-24. f1.4 is nice, wish it was just a little cheaper.
I've got a message this morning to say it's going up to $469
Great vid. I'd love to see the comparison between Samyang and Viltrox.
Sounds like a plan
Do it! :-)
Thx
@@DickVanPaiton So many people asking me to do it. I'm slowly putting it together.
For sure. I have a rokinon 12mm for real estate but would like to get the 13mm to match my other viltrox lenses. There's a noticeable difference in contrast and color between my 12 and my other viltrox.
13mm DOES sound interesting. I could be very tempted indeed. Oh, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Damian.
It's a very cool focal length!
i'm so glad that they dropped the gaudy gold branding of the 23 and 33 in favor of the simple white text. thanks for review, top shelf as always.
Thank you!!
much better indeed !
Great review Damien. Many Thanks.
Thanks Tony
I've recently started out as an amateur astro shooter with the Viltrox 23mm which I'm happy with so far. I think this is going to be a necessary purchase before my next trip.
Brilliant, I think they've announced it for china first then the rest of us after. Let's hope it's soon!
Finally some News, thank you for the video! :)
At last!
Love your vids Damien I just subscribed!!!
Thank you Frankie, much appreciated!
Wonderful samples thank you Damian! I especially liked the ones with people in them. I appreciate your efforts in taking those images, the results are beautiful.
Re: future vids/comparisons with this lens. Because it's a less covered focal length (at that aperture) I would be interested in seeing Field Of View/Focal Length comparisons taken on a fixed tripod between the:
- 9mm from Laowa (not sure if you have this lens)
- 10mm from the 10-24
- Samyang 12mm
- and this 13mm lens
- And maybe the Fuji 16 or 18mm if you have them, others may be interested.
I think maybe two test images,
- A full body environmental portrait
- And a closer head to waist level environmental portrait.
Both wide open, and then also f8/f11.
These tests should cover both environmental/doco/street portraiture and landscape photography focused on fore/middle ground elements.
Subscribe for more. Thanks :)
you are the only reviewer on youtube, who have gotten this. I've shared your vdo to community and people are going nut to get this lens. It's fire. usb type c upgrade is a welcome bonus.
Awesome :) Let's hope somebody subscribes too
It really wouldn't hurt Viltrox to update their current lenses to usb c either.
Fantastic review, thank you Damian. Good price too!
And just after you said that, they emailed me to say it's gone up to $469
@@DamianBrown damn! I shouldn't have said anything!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING
Great video man, but seriously impressed with your vinyl collection :)
Thanks! It's actually less than it used to be.. Need to get back on it at some point though.
Looking forward to your comparisons to the Samyang 12MM F2 AF X-mount
Very nice review, I hope it comes out in January.
I hope so too
Nice to have that touch screen focus in your garden shed focussing section. I decided to analyze the music. Easy on the ears, it simply goes up, then comes back down, like a fat puppy on thick carpeted stairs...
Love it :D
I'm not sure why I wouldn't just go ahead and buy this lens based on what I've seen in your review and my experience with the 56mm from viltrox. It's not all about brand names either. Thanks for the review.
You got it Des! Good man
I own the 23mm
/56mm/85mm love them! I own the Fuji 16mm F2.8, so i’m not sure I need this one. It would be nice for indoor low light photos.
@@DamianBrown I have the loawo 9mm 2.8 and the tt artisans 17mm 1.4 should I add this to my kit or any reasons why I would include it? Or just hold out considering I already have wide options
@@jackheart2925 isn’t the artisans manual only?
@@rdog77 yes but I find for myself that these wide focal lengths I can live without AF so the the question is in this case would be should I add an in between focal length between the 2 I already have
Thank u ever so much indeed!
Would love to see a comparison on this one!
This looks pretty great. Idk if I ever need the 1.4 over the f2 that samyang offers, but I like the idea of it.
There's pros and cons for both for me. As I mentioned 1.4 "trumps" it in my "world" but the Samyang is very cool too.
Merci pour le test !
Merci beaucoup
Thank you for this great review!
Unfortunately i will not buy the 13mm 1,4 anymore, as i picked up the Fuji 16mm 1,4 instead a few week ago due to the massive delay of the Viltrox.
Thanks Muttis! I'm sure you'll love the 16mm!
Yes let's see the comparison
It's nice to see it finally comes. However, with Tamron announcing it would bring 11-20 to X mount, Viltrox option seems less attractive.
Well this lets in more light and is almost available. The Tamron could be very interesting though.
wow. another interesting lens from viltrox😮
Agreed!
Demn! Those 13mm (21mm APS) focal lengths is crispy!!! I really love shooting wide.
Same! Really grabs the while scene and makes things extra interesting
I was thinking about to get the old XF 14mm f:2.8 because it is compact, not heavy and even if it is not WR I've seen some reviews about and it is almost WR as the 10-24 Mk I and, the hyperfocal scale in MF or/and the XF 16mm f:1.4. I like my Viltrox 56 and the 85 but not really sure to go to the Samyanng 12mm f:2 AF or that one. Actually I use the 10-24 and to put a prime lens between that focal range I think the 14 or 16 are more interesting to me. Probably my final choice it will be the 14.
The 14mm is cool, I used to own it!
The lack of weather sealing really puts me off on this lens. That and the fact I have the 10-24 Fuji Mk2 and the Fuji 16mm F1.4. It's a hard sell for me also. WR is important to me so while I'm mostly happy with my Viltrox 33mm F1.4, I don't see myself buying any future lenses that don't have dust and moisture resistance.
Fair play sir :)
Loving the 56mm from Viltrox which has caused me to order the 23mm too. I am slightly concerned about dust ingress though as my 56mm seems to have acquired quite a bit in a relatively short time. Actually this is something my cheap 7artisans 25mm has got too, so it seems it could be a common problem with Chinese lenses. On a telephoto its not a big deal but I would be worried about it on a super wide. Hopefully the 23mm will be OK or it will be going back.
I don't need f1.4 on a super wide lens which I would rarely use anyway, certainly not at the cost, size and weight. So this lens would get a pass from me anyway. But's that's just me and my shooting style. I would be keen on a 135mm ish lens from them though, having to use old MF adapted lenses for this focal length at present.
That's interesting to hear. Mine has been fine but maybe I haven't put it to the same test as you. This is something we need to know more about from other users.
@@DamianBrown I have not put it to any test, just held it up to the light and looked through it. I have lenses over 40 years old which have the same or less dust. There are even one or two very small fibres inside the lens. I have never seen this in any of my old lenses. I have only had the lens a couple of months so it's not through my use this has happened. I should have done this check on receipt, but as it was new I assumed.....As I said it does not effect IQ as it is a telephoto, but it does not say so much for Viltrox's quality control.
Can confirm. My 23 has some minor dust inside and I use it very carefully. Maybe that’s just bcos of my city’s dusty environment.
Hello. I don't think dust will present much of a problem for this lens, as it has dust protection built in. According to Viltrox, the lens has 6 rubber rings inside , so some weather proofing there, I guess.
@@durzog3668 Thankfully my 23mm has shown no signs of dust since its arrival.
Sounds like a very impressive lens.
I'm happy with it
Yes, I would like to see a comparison between the 2 lenses. The Samyang is selling for $529 in the U.S. and I believe the Viltrox will be at least $125 less. Keeping score: Viltrox is less expensive, heavier in comparison to Samyang's 12mm, with a faster aperture, has a manual aperture ring, but is not weather sealed, while the Samyang 12mm is lighter (I believe more plastic?), lacks a manual aperture ring (not a big deal to me), and is weather sealed. The AF seemed pretty fast on this lens, but there wasn't as much emphasis on it vs. the Samyang review, so just off-the-cuff, do you have an opinion on which one is better? And thank you for all of your great reviews and other photographic content! 👍
I'm gonna have to do this darn comparison at some point, though I can't put it out yet anyway :( Not sure how I'd go about it yet but you've basically summed it up for the most part. Honestly not much in it otherwise based on AF performance. I've used both for video clips too and it gets the job done.
Viltrox is amazing I used 85mm it's amazing
Picked up the samyang just before I saw you had this coming. I'd given up hope. But I love the compactness and lightness of it... Haven't taken it off since I received it! Now my other lenses are mostly fast Fuji's and still I've been very impressed. The spiritual successor to my 16 1.4! Astro? Not tried yet so the jury's out. The old MF wasn't bad though.
As to price, well I picked up the samyang AF for the equivalent of just under £300. Yeah, I got a good deal, but I think it shows there's some potential for a price drop at some point. At equal(ish) price points I think it will be difficult not to be happy with either, but the samyang does need to get that price down.
All in all I'm not disappointed I missed out. Does look like a fun option though!
Nice to see the German Christmas market in Brum. Here in Germany they've all been cancelled! Where I am anyway. Have a good Christmas!
You got a bargain for the Samyang! I love mine. Ye had to go to town for the lights to make the fog less depressing and moody.
Finally! Thanks for the review, Damian. It looks like a decent lens for the price although a bit on the heavier side for me. 420gr makes it a bit uncomfortable with my X-T3 🤔
I will have to thing about it...
Meanwhile I'm rocking mine with the sigma 18-35 AND an adapter 😭
@@daaddyo1249 that's a really nice but really heavy setup 😄
The older I get, the more willing I am to sacrifice quality for convenience...
@@daaddyo1249 Same here, while the output is really worth the weight and no fuji equivalent exists!
Ye if that's a concern you'd be happier with the samyang maybe?
Beast :)
Thanks for the review. I spotted at least one reply aiming for "astrophotography". Is it possible for you to check whether the lens is a star eater or does it show any coma? In other words: How does the lens perform when it comes to astrophotography?
kind regards.
As I said, I don't shoot astro, yet, so I'm waiting to hear from astro shooters when they try the lens.
That’s a nice chunk of no lens cloth. Great review. Always depend on your reviews. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
This looks phenomenal. For me, it's going to be a toss up between this and the Sigma 16mm. I think my only concern is QA on the Viltrox. I hear it's quite possible to get a poor quality copy. If I could get a good one though, i would be hard pressed to take it off.
I haven't had a bad Viltrox lens yet but you're right, it could be something to consider... anyway if you buy from a reputable source you could always return it. Sigma naturally have more footing in most countries, are more established and appear in more physical retail stores which is always a good thing! Not sure how many people have this lens yet though. I believe they're finally opening pre orders/ orders this month
I own the 23, 33 and 56, with the 85 on the way, and so far all have been spot on. Knock on wood.
Wow! I loved the review. Do you think this lens would be acceptable for wedding photography? I really prefer this lens over the samyang 12mm AF f2. I thought the samples you put up looked awesome. And that’s why I’m asking if you think this would be good for wedding photography. Let me know what you think.
I would use it for certain moments in a wedding yes indeed!! Maybe even dance floor photography
@@DamianBrown awesome! Thanks for the response. This lens is definitely one I’m gonna pick up.
Hi Damian, just wanted to hear your views on the Viltrox 13mm since putting out this video. I would also like your views on the 12mm Samyang as a comparison. Thank You
I've been asked by loads to make a video about that but basically I still love this and use it when needed, the extra light makes it more useful to me indoors but the 12mm has that tiny bit extra width that I use for in car videos for example. I don't think anybody needs both but I can't decide which to get rid of :D I'd probably travel with the 12mm and the 13mm leave in my work bag for maybe certain shots, not a whole event but say dance floor stuff, wide indoor groups maybe
What interests me, how good will the lens be for some wide-angle astro photography? How does it compare to the well-liked Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2, for instance? Or the Fuji 16mm f/1.4, for shooting starry skies over a landscape? :-)
That's what my main usage for a lens like this would be!
Seems to be a popular question!
@@DamianBrown I a not surprised. 😁
Ultra wide angle, and ultra wide aperture.
That's often what star-hunters go for! More light, and more sky.
PLEASE do the Samyang 12mm vs Viltrox 13mm comparison!!!!!
Nice foggy weather! But, what's with YOUR astro shots? ;-) I own the XF 14mm f2.8 and am really wondering how this lens performs with coma and edge sharpness. Thanks for the review tho!
I don't shoot astro. It's on the list of things to try one day.
Here's a like before watching 10 secs of the video! Thanks !
Love it
Hey Damien. I just watched your review on the samyang 12mm auto focus lens. If you have to choose between the two, which one would you recommend. Thanks again mate!
Ah no, I'm still thinking about that. I more or less summarise my initial thoughts in the summary here though.
@@DamianBrown AND that's why I should have watch the video till the end 😄. Thanks Damian
@@travelcanada8817 it happens a lot 🤣 this video turned out a bit long sorry!
I sell my viltrox 23 because of the vignetting.
I embrace about CA or corner sharpness in viltrox lens anyway.
How do you think this would compare with using the canon eos 10-18 and the Fringer adapter as a used fringer and 10-18 would come in cheaper than this and have a range
I own both and they serve two different purposes for me, personally. Both have a place in my kit.
Hello
I would like to ask you wich lens is better
Fujifilm xf23 mm 1.4 or viltrox 13mm 1.4
Thank you for your time
Hey Matus, honestly I have never thought about comparing them as they are totally different for me.
I have Laowa 9MM, Fuji 18mm 1.4, and Fuji 10-24mm. Thinking about ditching the 10-24mm and going 9mm, 13mm, and 18mm. Hmmmmm. Decisions.
Too much choice :D I don't see a problem with that plan!
What do you think about the difference between sticking with the Sam yang for Real Estate?
I don't see a problem with that at all! Those extra mm's count in RE too and the slightly slower aperture isn't an issue.
Next wedding on Jan 15th.
I wonder if I need that wide angle lens for weddings. By "that wide" I mean this or Samyang 12mm.
Not sure it'll be out in time but you never know!
I am having a hard time deciding between this and the Samyang AF. This has the Aperture ring and the 1stop more light, the samyang has the Weather Resistance and is wider. If the Samyang had an Aperture ring, I would already have bought it 😁
You're not the only one trying to decide :) actually the lack of aperture ring isn't a big deal for me, as much as I like a proper aperture ring. It's much quicker to adjust my aperture via the front dial near the shutter button although it's a different shooting experience for sure.
@Damian Brown I understand. But I moved from Canon to Fuji, specifically because of the Aperture ring. I find it more fun to shoot, helping me to pick up my camera more often. I hope, Fuji will also address the ultra wide angle in the near future. I guess I have to rent both and see which ones I like more. But since I own the manual focus version of the Samyang, it is only the AF and Weather sealing I would gain. And it would mostly be for video AF. For my photography, the Manual focus is not a dealbreaker since I have time to focus with such a lens. But IQ wise both are exceptional for third party lenses to be sure!
So It's been pushed for 2022, and I can see on other comments that you can't say exactly when. But... any hints? I'm going on a trip at the end of February and was looking forward to bringing something like this one.. 👀
I don't know when. That's all I go out of them. They emailed today to say the price has been adjusted to $469 but before I published the video they told me 429, so let's hope it doesn't change again.
@@DamianBrown Thanks so much for the info!
How does this Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 works on astrophotography compare with Samyang 12mm F2.0? I mean not only the aperture and take image quality and coma into comparison
ruclips.net/video/uYlG5ZedUDE/видео.html
when will this be available? currently I don't see it online anywhere.
All they said so far is 2022 and that it'll be out in China first. And that it'll now be $469. At the point of recording the price was 429 and they hadn't mentioned that China would be first :)
Does it make a lot of noise when it focusing?
None at all.
In Germany it's not available yet. How is the wobbling effect?
It's not available anywhere yet
Seasonal greetings 🖖 Mr Brown.
👋🏼
would you take this over the samyang/rokinon 12mm AF?
Stay tuned :)
hello mount on an xt-4 is it compatible with the ronin sc thank you
From what I can see online yes
Hi Damian. Did you use an Autofocus or a Manual Focus during recording the movie? You mentioned it was also Viltrox. I want to buy something not expensive with let's say a good autofocus. We know Fuji's autofocus is not as good as Sony or Canon. But I want to use it for a travel video vlogging and again the same question - what would be better for it this lens or Samyang 12MM F2 AF? 😁
Autofocus, face detection. Zero problems with my XT-4, very very confident with it. I use a Panasonic S5 now for these videos now, still use my T4 for work, and the T4 is definitely more confident in face detection video shooting. The S5 is great though.. Back to the question. AF on the 13mm and 33mm both wide open.
As for travel, both are great choices but the Samyang is smaller and comes with the nice case so for travel it would nudge it's way into my bag/ pocket over the Viltrox... although this Viltrox would be superb on your travels especially lower light. There's not much in it for travel shooting really.
@@DamianBrown thank you for the answer. The best could be having them two in one - WR +1,4f but unfortunately that's impossible :) anyway thanks again and please continue your job. You help a lot!
It is quite a big lens or not? How does it balance?
I often/ usually have one hand on the lens anyway, "cupping it/ resting it on my open hand" ruclips.net/video/uYlG5ZedUDE/видео.html so balance is never an issue.
The fast aperture might just convince me to add it to my samyang 12mm and the newly delivered 12mm f2af and the 7artisans 12mm 😂 but I'm definitely blaming you when the Mrs goes mental
🤣🤣🤣 I'm going into hiding
@@DamianBrown very wise 😂😂😂

Did you see the up close section? Maybe I didn't mention the magnification but the mfd is in view, 22cm.
ok thank you
Maybe I have to consider this lens with Samyang AF 12mm F 2.0 because F 1.4 is very surprising to me
A lot are asking themselves the same thing
Hey
What's your opinion, is there any point in me for it Fujifilm XF 14 mm f/2.8 R ?
I am not satisfied with the constant buzzing (running) of the motor when focusing when filming...
Loved the 14mm when I owned it. For video and low light this is more useful for me.
@@DamianBrown Thanks

Popular question it seems
Where the hk this thing came from? I'm buying it as Christmas present
2022 is all we know so far
I WANT!
Definitely wanna see sammy 12 vs this
Ah the sigma 16mm 1.4 for Fuji finally here, wider too. Almost no reason waiting for the sigma hope now
Who knows if and when a sigma 16 will ever appear but it won't replace this. It might go in my kit if I like it though.
It’s still not available to buy anywhere despite it supposedly being available since November. I’m sick of looking/waiting so my money is going elsewhere.
They've never formally announced it. They've said it was coming a bunch of times but never given us a specific launch date
What is the "C" for on the side of the lens? Contemporary? Is that not a Sigma thingy...?
Looks like the Sony G thing as well. I'll try to ask them
the "C" stands for APS-C

Wow, a clicked aperture ring. Want expecting that. Must have heard the feedback.
And very clicked it is :)
Indeed that s a good surprise ! I wonder if they ll bring that in potential mk2 23/33/56 ( even if I don't mind the clickless arperture on my 56 as the ring offers enough resistance to not slip accidentaly )
Do you think it's worth having this and the xf16?
I sold my 16 and picked up the 18 1.4 and Samyang 12AF. They certainly compliment each other well. Actually the close focussing of the samyang and it's rendering reminds me of the 16 1.4!
Not really an alternative to the 16mm for me
8:05 auto white ballance?
I believe so. Usually go awb on stuff like that.
But when can we order? :/

What a great idea. I really should one day... I'll put it on the list Phil, thanks!!
@@DamianBrown cool just drop me a message
If only the macro is closer and if this was a bit smaller, would have been better vs the 12mm
It's 22cm, I mean closer would be even more fun!
I wonder if this lens would be great from astrophotography?
This is a question a few are asking here too, so let's see when astro shooters try it!
Astro shooters WILL mind the distortion around the corners when the lens is fully open :-/
Sigma will release 20 f/2 DN for E and L mount very soon.
But not 13mm f1.4 for Fujifilm at least for a long time.
Nice review ! But I think I prefer TTArtisan 17mm f1.4, nice outward and optical performance than Viltrox.
Different lens, definitely different budget, for me but a nice choice!
I will put this really really simply. Just go and buy this lens and take beautiful photos. End of story. You don't need to know anything else about this lens whatsoever. Just go and buy it and take beautiful photos and sit back and go. Wow because that's how good this Lens is
Well said!
The colours on the Samyang are hit and miss plus manual focus is a pain and video isn’t great with super wobbly corners - this looks amazing!
I'm enjoying it!
@@DamianBrown I mean the manual focus one. Other than weird colours, my biggest problem with my 12mm MF Samyang is if there is any light source anywhere that hits the lens at an angle, the image looks extremely hazy and unusable - this happens in restaurants, concerts, offices, making the lens very unreliable for me :( - the hood does nothing!
Does the AF version or this 13mm experience that at all?
@@DigiDriftZone so far I haven't had that problem
Как забронировать?
I think only Pergear have pre orders so far? I should check now.
Nice review, CA and Vignetting blow it out for me, not great for astro use
Thanks Terry!
Samyang vs Viltrox, please please please.
I'm sure Viltrox will beat the Samyang in overall IQ and being 1/3 brighter, but I'm not sure that's enough to overcome the size/weight penalty... esp for vloggers.
I've lost count how many ask for this :) I think I can finally put it together as well. I was asked to not post more about this lens before until now 🤐
Sony has the Sigma 16mm f1.4 at a great price. Very affordable! However Fuji's excellent 16mm f1.4 is just too expensive. Finally Fuji has an AF Wide angle very fast f1.4 aperture lens that doesn't destroy the bank! 😀
This wouldn't replace the 16mm for me, different lens. Very welcome addition though!
As more third-parties adopt the Fuji X mount its very likely that we'll see more affordable third-party lenses for Fuji as well. For now since the Fuji market doesn't have saturated competition it's just natural to see slightly higher prices. But it's just a matter of time and that might just make Fuji up their game in their XC line not to miss out on the affordable lenses wave.
For now I see Fuji updading their current lenses to accommodate the new sensor and be more optimized for video with smoother autofocus which will open the door for the third-parties to come with new lenses in focal lengths and flavors that Fuji won't be able to handle themselves, and that's just what we need to introduce third-party lenses to the Fuji ecosystem. I'm looking forward to that Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 or even faster fixed aperture zoom lenses and new lenses with OIS.
@@DamianBrown so you are saying not to sell the Fuji16mm 1.4 farm? Would be interesting to see the comparesing between the 2... Had this on the radar for a while, like the rest of us. I have Viltrox 23mm 1.4
@@BranRistic I wouldn't. Personally it would be used for different shots, more general purpose wide on jobs for example
Price?
ruclips.net/video/uYlG5ZedUDE/видео.html (though that has changed since I published the video to 469)
now all we need is a 33mm version of this.
There is one no?
@@DamianBrown i think that's the old ver. these new line is more like the rest of the sony z design. the existing 33 is the non asph i think.
Still has the twitchy AF when focusing on subjects at different distances.
For me it's totally fine. Not shooting sports with it.
@@DamianBrown What I meant was the video AF. That's also present in the 23mm and 56mm I had. Nice that they added clicked aperture now though. Did they engrave/emboss the lens markings now?
