Without an aperture ring, how do you set aperture? Maybe it's obvious because he didn't answer and no one in the comments is asking, but I don't know. Physical controls, including aperture rings, were a big part of why I chose Fuji
It can be changed with the front dial which is sometimes quicker being right by the shutter button. I think most of us prefer a physical aperture ring but it's left out a lot to keep size, weight and mostly cost down. Usually I'm fine without it, if I have to work the exposure compensation a lot (which I do via the front dial too) it can get awkward having to press the button to switch functions. But if I'm not changing the exposure compensation, it's a simple turn of the dial to go through the aperture range.
I've neglected my 12mm samyang manual because I just can't get into the manual focus. Might make the switch, depending on how well this performs against its predecessor.
Good question. I used it in the intro as an example and overall it's pretty good. The af is excellent, albeit in the intro clip it lost me briefly. More to study on that one.

Thank you for this video, Damian! On some places online one can read that this lens does not work with Fujifilm's IBIS in the X-T4 (and maybe in the X-H1). Is that true? Or has this issue meanwhile been solved via firmware update?
The page says it isn't compatible with Bayer cameras like the X-T200. Any chance you still have one of those to try it on? I'm curious if it's entirely inoperable, or if just the AF isn't usable and the aperture and still be controlled from the body
@@DamianBrown Isn't that like missing the point of the Fujifilm X system with the traditional and so useful feature of aperture ring on the lens itself?

Thank you for this video, Damian! On some places online one can read that this lens does not work with Fujifilm's IBIS in the X-T4 (and maybe in the X-H1). Is that true? Or has this issue meanwhile been solved via firmware update?
Mine worked flawlessly with the T4 and I imagine the copy of the lens I had was the first firmware version.
@@DamianBrown Thank you, Damian!😊
The page says it isn't compatible with Bayer cameras like the X-T200. Any chance you still have one of those to try it on? I'm curious if it's entirely inoperable, or if just the AF isn't usable and the aperture and still be controlled from the body
I haven't, but I really want to find out. I'll let you know if I get any better idea.
... looks great. A bit on the plasticky side, though.
But why no f ring? Does the focus ring double as apperture when in AF mode, perhaps?
I just adjust it with the front dial on the camera, right by the shutter button so comfortable to do although I do prefer a traditional aperture ring.
@@DamianBrown Isn't that like missing the point of the Fujifilm X system with the traditional and so useful feature of aperture ring on the lens itself?
Great review!!! Really helps me to choose this lens for my wide angle lens. By the way, may I ask you a question, how can you set the aperture manually from f/2 to f.22 since it doesn't have ring aperture on the lens? Thanks mate
Using the front command dial on the camera, in my case. So right by the finger on the shutter, pretty ideal really.
Thanks for that, I thought it was stuck at F2🤣
It does look like a nice little lens.
I think so
Nice review, seems the colour rendition is better than the old mf version or did you do much to the pictures you showed? Whats your impression?
Thanks. The images are untouched. I think the colours are more "clean" maybe vibrant, less moody character than I remember the classic having.
Have the old MF version and think I will stick to that. Works perfect with focus peaking.
The classic!
I have that one. No complaints.
That 35mm pancake looks delicious!
I think it would be very cool for travelling with!
Thanks for the review! Unfortunately, this lens is absolutely nowhere to be found for sale..
I was told this week that stock is expected 19th November
I own one and i have an issue with back button focusing in c-af mode. The screen will froze immediately after pressing shutter to first posion (ae lock) if i am pressing back focus button and the aperture is F2,2 or higher an.
That's not good, I never noticed but let's see, I'm going to check it out again later.
AF third-party lens for x-mount is always a good news
Definitely
Purple fringe? Does the vignetting go away by f6, something? What's it like by f20?
I'll wait for Viltrox, for now.
Btw, I've seen you asking them.
Got the same response.
Could be delayed, since it's not out for 11.11. which is kind of a thing here.
Cheers from Shenzhen! XD
Um, forgot to ask about Fuji 10-24 mm vs new Samyang.
Ye I like to bug them whenever they pop up on my feed :D I have direct contact and it's pretty much the same response. I guess they change their plan for this year as it was supposed to be Q1, then it was supposed to be out after the cine lens range and now rumours are next month.
Haven't compared them properly but this is lighter and faster, better af for video while not flawless as you can see in the intro, and of course limited to 12mm.
Sweet, finally some Fuji love. That 75 1.8 please
Yes Ryan! That would be something.
Nice review! This is definitely going to my camera bag. I love their 1st version but I need auto focus especially for video! I really don't care about the aperture ring as I can do that in the camera. I hope to see more Samyang lenses for Fuji!
Pretty much my feelings too, although I do like an aperture ring it hasn't stopped me enjoying this lens.
Make me jealous a bit, because I have a MF version of this lens. On the other side, for such focus length one don't really need to focus a lot. Just put it on infinity for everything, what more than two meters away!
You've got a classic, not a problem!
This is so good! This might finally be the wide angle lens for me.
I'm enjoying it :)
it is said that samyang has serious problems with ibis in XS10... do you have this combo to test it ?
I don't, sorry!
Compare with the Carl Zeiss Touit 12mmf/2.8 which one is better for stills photo?
Would be cool!
Thank for the review.
How this lens will perform on an older XT-1? 🤔
Good question! I'm waiting to see if anybody tries it, or if I get my hands on a T1 again.
Nice video. For Astro, MF lenses are preferred.
Very true. But there are many astro shooters interested nevertheless :)
Screw all those AF Sony lenses. What I want is an AF version of their INSANE 135mm F2. Hands down Samyang's best lens, if they can make it under €800 I'd buy it day 1.
That would be special!
I expect this is a really stupid question as I am new to the Fuji system, but if it has no aperture ring then how do you set the aperture?
With the wheel near your shutter button. Pretty easy to be fair and for some people more convenient.
@@DamianBrown Thanks, I actually have that front wheel set to exposure compensation, (with the exposure comp dial set to "C"), but presumably I could switch between the two functions by pressing the wheel in?
I wonder, if this lens is compatible with my Fuji X-M1 camera? Does enybody knows this? On the manufacturers site is not on support and not on not-supported list? Thanks.
This is a good question. I want to get hold of an older Fujifilm body again to try as a lot are wondering the same.
@@DamianBrown thank you!
Great... I only just picked up a used Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 2 weeks ago. FML
Typical, usually happens to me.
No video autofocus test ?
Intro at 00:00 is with the lens in AF-C / face tracking.
Did you own the previous manual 12 mm? Can you compare them?
I used it a lot but it's been a long time. It's a good idea though. I might have to get hold of one.
Aahhgggg… I need it NOW. But not yet available :(
I think just pre order at the moment :(
@@DamianBrown not in Spain (big retailers and local shops). Hope we don’t wait too much 😅 Thanks for replying, Damian.
I read a review on B&H that said this lens doesn't work with the xh2s. Is this true?
I haven't been able to try the combo, hopefully somebody can confirm on these comments!
@@DamianBrown I suppose for landscape and astro, AF isn't that important, but it would be nice to have!
this could be best vlog lens like RF16mm F2.8 for fujifilm user :)
Could well be!
do you prefer this over the viltrox 13mm ?
It's a very popular question, I'm gonna put a video together about it due to demand 😅 as it stands I'm still using both.
Great review! Hope you can do the comparison with Viltrox 13mm f1.4.
4:20 My soul just left my body💀
😂 ye it looks like I have to make that video
Vlog with X-S10 + 12mm
Good shout.
Hey, any news on release date?
Just been told that stock is expected 19th November
@@DamianBrown Thank you so much Damian! Have nice day!
why did you cover the fujifilm writing on your camera?
Just for discretion, nothing special.
Can the lens hood be reversed and stored on the lens?
It drives me mad that lens reviewers don't check this.
As it drives you mad I'm going to get mine now and try it. Feel free to subscribe in the meantime :D
Now I remember, no. I'll try to remember that next time but no you can't reverse it.
@@DamianBrown thanks for confirming!
Also, sorry to moan about this. It's just I store my lenses in my camera bag stacked vertically on top of each other, to save space. I think alot of small-bag photographers do this. This means having a reversible lens hood is very useful (otherwise where to store the hood?), so I always need to check for it
For example, the Fuji 35mm 1.4. great lens but very annoying hood to store in a small bag (as it can't be reversed).
@@attentionaddicts it's a good point! I haven't been doing it for a while so it slipped my mind though I do remember testing it when I first got it and found it was quite hard to remove. Seems to have loosened up now tho.
No mention of the lack of aperture ring?
2:08
@@DamianBrown Thanks! What I meant is that the aperture ring in the lens is a key part of the "Fuji appeal", and that getting rid of it makes this lens unappealing.
Nice lens Nice beats 🎧
Thanks!
Is this lens available in the market yet?
It was only just officially announced yesterday so I guess not. Stores will probably take pre orders, then supply appears on the market. Maybe we'll hear when now.
@@DamianBrown thanks
How does this compare to the Fuji 16mm?
Totally different focal length.
how do u change the aperture on these?
I use the front dial on the camera, it's actually quicker because it's the same finger I press the shutter button with.
The link is for a Sony e mount lens not Fuji.
The exact link wasn't available, I'll adjust it
How do you change the f value?
front dial, actually right by the shutter button so quicker.
Does this lens work on XT-200?
I haven't tried it, can't see why not though.
@@DamianBrown the product page does not mention xt200 as a compatible camera. Would be great if you can make a vlogging centric video using xt 200. Thanks in advance.
How about a high quality 15-50 smallish zoom lens with a metal body and weather sealing…by anyone …please.
Interesting!!
Anyone knows if it's compatible with the Xt200?
Good question.
Any news of Sigma lens for fuji
No news anywhere yet... let's hope they have a plan, master or otherwise.
@@DamianBrown Hopefully a good plan. Rumour is that before 2021 Sigma will announce x series lenses but no solid info yet
Autofocus in a 12mm(18mm) lens!?....🤔
Sure :)
75mm please
Agreed!
