    Thanks for being the first review! Like with the Meike, it's great to actually see the performance of these such brand new lenses. Though since there isn't any info yet, it would've still been nice to see a test chart... and maybe a comparison with their own 1.4, or any of the other 55/56's, haha I know asking a lot. But lovely images from the field!

    Great review! I like the size of the viltrox 1.7, but i also like aperture rings... Which one would you keep as a low budget portrait lens, the viltrox 1.7 or the meike 1.4???

    Its probably an excellent quality and value for money lens.
    However, my high quality Sigma 56 1.4 continues to provide all the imaging quality I need.
    As usual, an informative and common sense review, avoiding those arcane pixel peeping side issues.
    Viltrox is certainly making a name for itself.
    Btw, just love the 27 1.2 recently purchased. Happy with my long-term Fuji 27 2.8, however the slightly sharper imaging, weather sealing and, naturally, more light are naturally advantages.
    Thanks, as usual, Damian.

    Great review Damian. If it was £139 in the UK I'd probably just buy one, but at £175 I'd think twice. Not a huge difference but enought to make me think "do really I need it? "

    I've owned their 85mm 1.8 [pretty good] and their excellent 13mm 1.4, highly recommended if you like WA lenses - I found it sharper than the Fuji 16 1.4 [though perhaps my copy of the Fuji was a little off, have heard of 'bad copies'] The 13mm, if you can find it as I did for around €400 is a bargain. It's a shame some of their other lenses are a bit sub-par, their 56 1.4, 23 and 33 1.4 all received very mixed reviews, though they are still very good value if you don't mind stopping down a bit. Me, I buy a 1.4, or 1.8 etc to shoot mostly wide open. I have my eye on their 'pro' 27mm 1.2, it's about all I need atm as I haven't been doing much by way of photography but for travel and general purpsoe I love the idea of a very fast one-4-all lens.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад

      I have them and though the 85 hasn't been touched in ages, it's still decent for the price. That 13 is another level though! Love it. You want my 27? :D

    It's good to see some entry level AF lenses coming through from the third parties that are affordable for new and young photographers. It doesn't matter if the IQ isn't blistering, it only needs to be good enough at this level. And the US price probably doesn't include sales tax so add that on and their price will be similar to that in the UK or EU.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад

      You got it Kevin! That's how I see it. And yes, the sales tax thing is probably right. Still, the Euro and GBP price is off but hey.

    I dunno. If the focus ring could double as aperture, that’d go a long way. And if someone would lean into the flaws and any potential cat’s eye bokeh and swirl, they’d have a lens which was at least interesting. Unusual or interesting rendering is probably more of a draw at the ultra-budget level.
    I’m still actually somewhat tempted by the price. There are nicer lenses, but none feels quite right to me and my use cases. Maybe the 60/2.4.

    • @DamianBrown

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад

      Good idea but for me it's about the low budget new lens side by side. 250 used is still different to 150-200 new. Not for the likes of you and I that would go that route but those at the low low budget.

    • @fredschmidt8609
      @fredschmidt8609 3 месяца назад

      $100 more for a lens with an aperture ring, WR, and that can reveal the extra resolution of the 40mp sensor is a small price to pay.

  • @showdaKOs

    I can see the strategy, as this is haf the price of their other 56. In that case, making it plastic , cheap and simple is ok, like the Fuji 35's, the XC and the XF, but where fuji was VERY smart was tha both offered the same excellent IQ. The mixed IQ (not bad but not exelcellent) of the original Viltrox made me pick the Sigma instead and this seems to have an even worst IQ. I may be wrong, and am sure that some will buy but I would advice anyone considering it to save some money to buy something more. the 56 focal length is THE portrait focal length, having a good IQ at 56 will pay itself with good images wether you're pro or not.
    To go back to my Sigma, I just can't regret it. Every time i watch the result, i don't miss the aperture ring anymore, I'm kind of blown away. From the first pictures, it made me rethink the saying that gear can't make you a better photographer (and I've owned 5 lenses before that)

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад +1

      I agree! I'm glad the low low end is opening up now. Hopefully any money they make can be put into improving the whole range.

    This lens make no sense to me. They already have a crazy cheap 1.4 version, so why make this? Another thing I don't understand is why they put a wide angle hood on a portrait/telephoto lens? This is also the only lens that has "image size" on the fron. I guess that is probably supposed to mean image circle?

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад

      I did wonder when I first heard about it but it's almost half the price of the next up and looking at the market it's aimed at a lower budget which I understand. There are two other lenses that are around this spec and a similar price point so it it's profitable for them that's it's all good. Hopefully with that money then can develop the higher end gear for us 😃

  • @aaronsambeyfilm
    @aaronsambeyfilm 3 месяца назад

    Mostly... why? The 56mm f1.4 is already inexpensive, relative to the competition.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 месяца назад +1

      This is almost half the price so it's aimed at a different market. I don't mind especially if it means they can put some of the profit towards developing higher end gear.
