Connections definitely matter. Getting connected isn’t always that hard either as long as you can be utilized by your connections you can build connections you can utilize.
You can do it without connections. It depends on how far you want your career to go. On the mainstream scale of things, I would say no, but if you just want to have financial success without all the big time notoriety then no it's not entirely necessary.
