    I've been playing D&D for almost 20 years.
    Never have I thought to myself "It would be useful to be able to do LESS damage sometimes."
    Literally never.

    It's a trap. When you read the description you automatically think "If I roll a 1, I can roll it again and do lots of extra damage". But that's the best case scenario, and it won't happen that often.
    Just did the math.
    Average damage increase when you take this feat:
    1d6: 1 point
    1d8: 1.3 points
    1d10: 1.6 points
    On a 2d4 or 2d6 the bonus will be slightly higher in absolute terms but >proportionately> lower because of bell curve effects. combined with the fact you're already doing a lot of damage at that point.
    And the feat only applies to one attack per turn. If you take a +2 increase to your attacking stat instead you get +1 to attack >and> damage, and those bonuses apply to multiple attacks in a turn.
    It might be a little more useful for rogues if it also applied to sneak attack damage, but the official word is that it doesn't.
    I've been trying to think of a time when it is worth taking this feat. The only situation where it makes sense at all is if you're a moon druid and you turn into a creature that has one big attack, like a giant shark. Even then you'll only add maybe 10% to damage on average. Not useless, but a little underwhelming when you consider how few feats druids get.
    As far as deliberately hitting your friends and then trying to use this feat to reduce the damage. Uh...good luck with that.
    I think the person who wrote this feat doesn't understand math. People who take this feat definitely don't. And people who deliberately hit people they don't want to hurt and then use this iffy feat in the hopes they won't kill them? Words fail me.

      I couldn't agree more! I gotta say, I really wasn't expecting this kind of a comment when I got up today. HAWT damn did you do a great job though, I'll have to make this the new pinned comment!

      This is some really good number crunching. I was playing around with it and I do like it. It's too bad that it only on average results in a 10% damage boost.
      I was thinking of combining it with Great Weapon Fighting Style and then the Great Weapon Master. So there's a chance (and let's be real, it's a small chance) of being able to get lucky and have that 10% boost to finish off a creature then getting a bonus melee attack to hopefully continue the momentum. Could be a ton of fun but certainly not competitive. (Could be insanely though powerful though if you start with a Half Orc then pick up those two feats. But by then the party threats will likely either be more social orientated or something out of range. Playing a one trick pony fighter could leave the party down unless you decide to take a background trait that helps in social situations but that's about it.
      TL;DR Minmaximg can be allot of fun so long as everyone at the table is cool with that. Besides, an evil DM will find ways to punish over specialization and encourage adaptive thinking. "If all you have is a hammer, then everything is a nail."

      Yes, this feat should be a half feat at least.
      I tried to make it work to justify using a great axe on a Half Orc barbarian, as a half feat but I still found myself tweaking it more so that you would get half damage die bonus if your re-roll is equal or lower than the original roll. Because nothing feels worse than having a feat that simply does nothing for you.
      Now I would rule that it simply allows you to add half weapon die damage to one attack.
      I also added that you could use it on one critical hit per rest. Adding 1/4th of max damage dice to a 'failed' re-roll.

    Here's one big thing you missed with savage attacker. All weapon damage die are rerolled. In other words, shadow blade with 3d8 damage as a 3rd level spell, you can reroll. It is much better on weapon attacks with higher dice damage ranges. 3d8 has a range of 3-24 while a great sword has a damage range of 2-12. You can also choose to reroll after you see the results.

    I like using it with Great Weapon Fighting style. Lets you milk as much dmg as you can outta melee. Good on a character that's just trying abuse turn economy. Toss it on someone around 10ish with PAM, GWM, GWF and a Glaive. You're going to see some crazy dmg start getting out putted.

    If you use Two-Hand Weapon, this Feat good for them. No more roll 1 or 2 damage, it now 10 or 12 damage on D10 or D12... If they are lucky. :3

    I got a dagger from the dm that deals 2d6 additional force damage. Does that mean i can reroll them + the d4 or just the d4? what do you think

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  4 года назад +3

      Sadly not, according to sage advice it only lets you re roll weapon dmg, not extra dmg of any kind.

    This ability is better combined with using duel wielding so you have more opportunity to "fail" a roll and over all maxing damage that way. Seems viable I think

      But if it's once per round, doesn't that mean that you can't use it on your second attack.

    In this feat you must use the reroll of damage. its not a choice.

    • @meatKog
      @meatKog 2 месяца назад

      Well the choice is to use the feat, but once the reroll happens, you must take the result.

    Is it mandatory to re-roll every damage die given this feat?

    • @ericmeyer5474
      @ericmeyer5474 4 года назад +1

      No, "you can reroll" not you have to/must reroll so you still have the choice.But there is almost no downside aside from Time being waisted.Because you can use either total.
      Also remember only once per turn not once per round.

    It is way better to get +1 to hit and damage (and AC and inititive wif it is DEX). Oh and all skills/saves off the attribute you use...

    One question is smite considered damage from your melee weapon attack divine or other

  • @culliganator
    @culliganator 2 года назад

    this was useless. Was hoping for an explanation on when to actually use it if you get multiple attacks per round. Attacks aren't guaranteed so if you don't use it early you may lose it. Was hoping for a mathematical explanation like use it on first attack if damage is below half (below 2/3 if you have three attacks. Otherwise always use it on last attack if you still have it. Talking about not using because of distractions was totally useless.
