Very INFORMATIVE overview on the AT-D878UV radio. Always LOVED your VIDEOS on the Kenwood D-74. You truly are a first class HAM official. I do remember HOW cold Quebec was back a few years ago. So your dropping the radio made me shiver... Am considering the radio very seriously - thanks again...
Super explaination of how to use the radio, to me that is much more usefull than a review. The manual has a lot of info but if you're new to dmr it is difficult to come to grasps with all the terms.
Great video Pascal! Thanks for the review. I am a new ham and want to purchase an HT that I will not need to upgrade for some time. I think the Anytone just may be the one.
Digitalis a fog to me. It has been a while since I have been involved in radio. You helped a bit in walking through the fog, but it is still mostly fog. Thanks for taking the time helping us with this information. You were thoughtful to do so. N4KBM
I received the 878 yesterday and started setting it up but I found a HUGE problem with it. The main reason I wanted to try this radio is the new APRS in both analog and DMR modes. Unfortunately, the APRS is where I have run into the problem. I have found nowhere in the radio or the programming software to change the radios ARPS callsign, so each time it sends out an APRS packet it is transmitting a Chinese callsign. If you change the APRS Text with your callsign, it simply adds that as a note under the Chinese callsign. The second problem is that if you turn on the APRS, even with the volume on the radio knob turned all the way down as far as it will go so that you can no longer hear any received transmissions on the radio and the Max Vol level set to "indoor", when the radio transmits an APRS packet the sound is deafening as though the volume was turned all the way up as high as it will go. This alone renders the AT-D878UV completely useless for APRS use.
In the CPS , part APRS > Your Call Sign You can erase default chinese callsign and add Your own Callsign. In the same menu You must also set APRS TX Tone off. Then you will never hear APRS tone when radio sending APRS packet.
@@OK4MD Thanks, we finally figured out that the CPS was part of the problem, it was not showing the APRS options tab. They had me reinstall the CPS and the APRS tab showed up then so I was able to make the changes finally.
Hi Jamie, like I mentioned the video I'm not too familiar with Roaming and I think you are right it's something you program into the radio and not on the repeater side. But if you roam on another repeater and the TG you were listening is not available on this one, it won't work, I guess? In the Montreal area there's a lot of DMR repeaters own by the same group and the TG are standard for all of them, making it possible for roaming. One of my friends did use roaming in a QSO (with another radio brand) it works seamlessly, my statement is base on that since I have no personal experience with this feature. It's a good subject for a future video ;-) 73 Pascal VA2PV
Thanks Pascal for your video. I wish other youtubers and radio makers would stop saying APRS when they mean DPRS! Its so hard to find a good video showing simple DPRS set up for the Anytones. W VK1MIC
Thanks Pascal for a great review, I just purchased this radio D878 and was torn between the new Alinco dj-md5t radio and decided for the Anytone (slightly better) plus a much larger battery also. I like your Expert Electronics MB-1 HF rig too, I bought one in early 2018 Feb and absolutely love it. I do wish for you to make some other videos on it. The transmit audio quality and width capability (10-Khz) is great and also the RX audio quality is superb as well as the filtering. I use a EV RE27ND mic on it. Please do some on-air tests with it. I should get the Anytone next week. 73 N8EFJ.
Hi Robert, cool for all your radios. I really enjoy the MB1, I did the software and firmware upgrade recently, check out my previous videos. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Good review. Thanks. Just an FYI... The AT-D868UV V2 hardware and AT-D878UV hardware are identical. The D878 even has D868 on the board inside. That means it does not have a faster processor. Still, I recommend the AT-D878UV for the updated firmware and to support Anytone in their efforts to bring better products to market at an affordable price.
Thank you. I just search to find where I got this information and you're probably right about the processor. What I found is that it has more memory for the added features. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Hello- I travel off road for camping and exploring. I am most interested in the APRS functionality. Will APRS work while you are monitoring analog FM? Can you tx and have APRS wait and resume etc?
Yes you can monitor both, it won't transmit if you are transmitting on the other VFO. You can also set the APRS beacon manual, when you decide to PTT on that channel or set the beacon to be less often plus it's very quick but it will mute the other VFO for a short time, one or two second. 73 Pascal VA2PV
i can recieve aprs messages from the aprs network but for some reason I cannot send aprs messages from the brandmeister dmr into the aprs net -- does somebody has a hint, what could be the reason.
I did struggle at first as well, until I set up the number of step station that I allowed in order to reach the APRS network. On DMR, it's more complicated as you have to activate specefic TG to be able to send your position to the network. Check out my configs in the video, you can also check my AT-D578UVIIIPRO video review, it's very similar but the video is more recent, it should helps. 73
