Simon has done an outstanding job with this software. This is one of the finest pieces of software ever written. A pleasure to use. I'm still discovering features I never knew were there.
As part of being "among the the finest pieces of software ever written," I think I'd expect easily accessible menus of clearly explained functions. But that's just me.
I just bask in glory of that beautiful display, and the outstanding results you can get with an SDR now. The age of having to spend $1000s to get a receiver of superlative quality is drawing to a close.
Really nice features, but Windows software implies that we are someone's toy for privacy strip tease which I cannot agree to. Thanks for the demo anyway.
I've been using SDR Console for years, agree it's the best. One of my favorite features is the record function. For example, i recorded quite a few hours of the CQWW CW contest a few weeks ago, recording the entire cw section of bands. I can go back and listen to it any time, tuning up and down the band just like it was live, truly amazing.
Thus far, SDR Console is my favorite software to use. I've used it since 2016 and although it was somewhat overwhelming at first, it's my goto for SDR receiving. Fantastic piece of software.
I was having trouble getting other sdr software to recognise my RTL dongle with not much success, then i came across SDR Console and BOOM i was up and running in minutes, great software, thanks to its creator
Thanks. I've played around with the various SDR software packages in the past and found them very hard to install and get working, and with odd interface controls that didn't do what I wanted the way I wanted it done. One package did some things right. Another package did other things right. It was frustrating. So for the past 3 or 4 years I set SDR aside. But this looks like it's time for me to get back into it. Again, thanks.

I’ve been running an SDR with my rig for a couple of years now. ICOM ICM700Pro, yes it’s a marine radio. 150 watts 1.6mhz through 28mhz no mod needed. I paired it with a AirSpy HF + Discovery.
Simon also wrote HamRadio Deluxe - a famous CAT and Logging SW. So his name guarantees high-end SW for decadesmeanwhile. I use both, HRD and SDR console.
After cycling through several different radios such as a Kenwood TS590SG, Icom 7300, Flex 6400M, Yaesu FTDX101D, and Mission RGO One, I finally realized that the best bang for your buck is go back to a 590SG, pick up a used Elad FDM S2 Receiver w/ SDR Console, and possess a better combo than any of the rigs I've ever had. Simon is truly an amazing programmer, and has provided the ham community with a wonderful piece of FREE SDR software. His "World Map" is also wonderful.
I recently got the Airspy HF+ Discovery which is amazing, I also have the Airspy R2 and a RTL-SDR V3 and V4, all of than wonderful and quite affordable SDR sticks. Also.......HELLO FROM SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA!
Thank you sooooo much for the excellent work on this. A new tech here. Now I don't need to spend $ on the FT-991a. I can add a QT-60pro 10m to my current multi band radio. Life saver!
👍I love SDRConsole!! Definitely my favorite piece of SDR software to use! Quite user-friendly and intuitive functions, especially compared to some of the others. Thanks for the nice video Hayden! Looking forward to your future videos as well. Cheers & 73, Tom - WA7FLY
Please guys, click the "Donate" button on SDR Console and give something to Simon. I can only imagine the hours he must have poured into getting this right, let alone polishing it to brilliance...
Welcome to the SDRC club! I have 7 receiver windows on 6M using a Airspy R2. 6 digital (FT8 50.303/313/323, FT4 318, MSK 144 260, Q65 275, and 50.125 +/- actual frequency) I am only listening on SSB, no need for me to hear digital signals
Hayden, this was a great video! (All of yours usually are, so not really surprised) I’ve been thinking about doing exactly this in my own shack; and would absolutely love it if you did a series of in-depth videos about how you set this up and what kinds of challenges (if any) you’ve encountered and how you solved them. I’m very interested in the antenna switch gizmo you mentioned, and am looking forward to seeing what else you have to say about it! Thanks for the video and the time you put into this. Very useful and enjoyable!
Been using SDR console for years. Works good with SDR transceivers like the Pluto and HackRF One on microwave bands, and the IC-7610 with dual VFOs. Worth exploring the Web-888 to monitor over 60mhz of bandwidth at the same time at 16bit resolution ( and 13 RX + WF Concurrent 'channels'), built-in 10Mhz GPSDO Output....
I run this program with an SDR Play combined with the rx out on my Yaesu FTdx-3000. Also running Log4OM and Omni-rig. This gives me a panadapter spectrum view of the band and point and click changing of frequency. It's easy to set up and is a great program.
When shopping for SDR hardware look for a an ADC with a higher bit depth. Bit depth directly translates to dynamic range. Flex and Apache Labs Anan are 16 bit and considered the gold standard ATM. The RSP devices are 14 bit but some of the dongles may be as low as 8 bit. it's a shame the Hermes Light 2 (14 bit) does not do 6m otherwise Id really recommend it to you Hayden. for around $600 it does 85% of my Anan. Thetis which runs on Anan and the HL2 is complex but once you try noise reduction 2 and adaptive pre-distortion there's no going back. NR2 is simply better than noise reduction of any radio and the pre-distortion means having one of the cleanest TX signals. You may know Icom have recently added it to the7610 and the new IC-PW2
@Ham Radio DX Thanks for the review of SDR Console Hayden, wow im really suprised that an operator of your expertise is only just getting onto SDR & in Particular SDR Console. Like you ive got a few SDR's with the RSPduo being my daily drive. I have played quiet a bit with SDR Console including again tonight after work after watching your video very this morning, I will say conpared to other SDR Software its a very steep learning curve & not an SDR O/S that Ive got my head around yet but after your video Im going to put some more serious time into it. Keep up the great work Wayne VK3ECS.
Hi Wayne, At the start of the video I explained I have used SDR’s in the past but the software was pretty clunky and didn’t do much. SDR Console has so much capability, next few videos will hopefully demonstrate that. 73
I totally agree. I love both SDR Console and SDR Sharp (the only reason I am still on windows). Absolutely wonderful programs. SDR Sharp is amazing when paired with the AirSpy HF+ discovery, and I use SDR Console for everything else like my RX888. I would prefer to use SDR console with the HF+ because I just think SDR Console is the best program overall, but I find the HF+ receives just a little bit better when used with SDR#.
I wonder when you will discover the rx888 mkII. Your half way there finding sdr console. We are talking monitoring the entire spectrum from 0 to over 30Mhz, everything all at once. having up to 24 simultaneously receivers. With a powerful enough pc I believe you could monitor all the hf FT8 at once. Anyway, tech minds did a video on it. And although im not a youtuber, I have a few sample no audio videos on my channel,
I had seen his video on that SDR....kind of on my wish list. It would have some nice uses as far as being able to "see" the entire HF spectrum at once...but then for $180 I contemplate impulse buying
Yes I have discovered the RX-888 MKII but I haven't quite pulled the trigger on it yet. I think the bandwidth is 64 MHz, so you can theoretically do all of HF + 6m too. I don't have a heap of interest in monitoring the whole of HF at once, it's mainly 6/10m - although maybe later in future. The RX-888 I think also has a few niggly issues, but can be resolved. I think it runs really hot too!
@@HamRadioDX it's all the things you don't know about that make it interesting. like finding some HF club members in the middle of the outback chatting. Or the Wiluna Marine Weather service on 8.113 Mhz. I also found my Ethernet over power was putting out a signal across the whole HF spectrum. it has band block filters (in effect) for Ham bands but still. SDR Console is the only sdr software that has real support for it and the author of SDR console was posting in the NextGenSDRs group. HDRSDR kinda works. Most SDR software isn't designed to handle the full HF spectrum. So really its SDR Console only. It needs very recent motherboard and cpu with rock solid usb3 support. It draws very close to the max usb3 current and continuously while active, which could be hours. very few devices do that. It does runs hot over and extended timeframe hence the heat sink case. mine has never overheated but I guess that's possible. My PC is an older Haswell cpu based one. it runs fine except when I try OBS recording or if there is heavy disk activity. that gives audio crackling. but that doesn't affect me when I'm just listening. It only has a 64Mhz low pass filter. so when your using it 0 -32Mhz it can pickup aliases. I've never seen them. Mine is only connected to HF ham band resonant antennas which probably helps. RX-888 MKII is a few years old now and I've not seen anything better to replace it. Most of the chatter on the NextGenSDRs group now is about WEB-888.
May I also add that the new SDR Connect is slowly adding to its feature list but for some strange reason it still hasn't added rig support yet. With so many hams using it, you'd think it would be the first thing to do. I was told it was because they're building it to work across platforms, so that makes sense. Still I am sticking with Simon's masterpiece. I particularly enjoy the pseudo stereo on CW.
I sure wouldn't mind a video about how to download and install SDR Console. The web page appears to be a minefield of 'Click Here To Download' ads for everything but the actual download. Then it leads me to a page where I have to sign up for a file-sharing site and provide it with my private info in order to get the download. Have I read that right? If so, I'll have to pass on the program. Too many hooks into my personal info. If not, I'd like to know the trick to getting the program. Thanks.
Great video! I agree the software blows away anything else out there. I'm curious if you or anyone here knows of a good android app for SDR that will similarly let you zoom out to see the entire band. I've been looking for that feature in an SDR software for my tablet for a good while now. Thanks!
G'day Hayden. So last night was my 1st opportunity since your video release to really put SDR-Console to the test against my daily drive SDRplay SDRuno running on my SDRplay RSPduo & I have to say & Id be happy to see your test results. So last night from my location in Melbourne's N/E @ 120M's above sea level with an uninterrupted view for 270 deg from N through to N/W I fired up the RSPduo in the FM Broadcast band & noted how many stations I could see on the water fall & hear between 88Mhz & 95Mhz which was over a dozen including some very remote stations from Mt Alex @ Bendigo, The Papps in the Victorian High Country & several stations from Gippsland. With SDR-Console on the same Win PC using the same Ant & the same SDRplay RSPDuo I could not see on the water fall or hear any of the remote stations from Bendigo Gippsland or the Victorian High Country. I would be interested in your experiences. Rgs Wayne VK3ECS.
@HamRadioDX yeah I tried all that was back on it tonight, whilst I openly acknowledge SDRC does a lot of things a lot of other SDR's don't do seeing weak stations compared to SDRP using the Duo & Uno ( at least in the FMBC Band ) is not one of them. If I'm wrong & have missed something happy to be shown / told 😅. Look forward to your further feedback Hayden Rgs Wayne VK3ECS
Wayne, The SDRplay devices have several built in notch filters. There is a chance that you need to dig into SDR Console’s settings and disable the broadcast band filters (one for MW and one for FM). I’m using the RSPduo with SDR Connect and occasionally stare at a blank MW waterfall questioning if the antenna is connected, only to realize it’s the broadcast notch! Hope that helps / 73 John
The problem I have with SDR Console site is that it's riddled with download buttons that have nothing to do with the software. It's so bad I can't tell where the real one is. A lot these kind of buttons are just means to distribute malware.
Currently I have my HF antenna - a DX Commander vertical hooked up to a two way splitter feeding both SDR's to do the side by side comparison tests. I've been doing the same test on 6m this morning with my 6m yagi - and in fact decoded Mexico and Japan on 6m! There will be videos coming on that topic and how to setup the SDRSwitch, preamps etc.
@@HamRadioDX I bought one of those cheap small mag loop antennas on amazon and it does ok. I'm in the bottom floor of a condo so not the greatest situation for antennas. I do have an AL705 mag loop that I connect to a 7300 and manage to do FT8 and WSPR. KK7MCG in Seattle. 73
I have also used this software to operate a remote SDR somewhere else in the world, at the same time it controls my 7300 via omnirig to sync the freq of the 7300 and SDR. This allows me to listen locally and somewhere else in the world simultaneously! I made a video of it in 2022 High Noise Floor? 😎
A cheap SDR can beat your 7610 - if you give it a better antenna. The RSP1A has a 12bit ADC I think, rtlsdrs are 8bit, and I think the 7610 is either 14 or 16, which sets up the dynamic range. You may be able to homebrew a sharp filter and increase gain to further tip things in the SDRs favour. I use my SDR with an amplified 40m full wave loop antenna further away from the house and that generally stomps on my 7300 for weak signals.
I cant go along with that. I tested the IC7300 against a TS590S against a RTL V3 Stick against a RSP1A. All in CW. The 7300 pulls out the weakest signals. Readability vs signal strength ist highly underrated!! In SSB, the 7300 sounds a bit better on weak signals. Both SDRs are nice, absolutely affordable and a charm to play with. But they cant serioulsy compete to a real TRX. The lack proper hardware based filtering is impossible to overcome in software. 73, DL8YF
@@GlobalFlyer I had very poor performance with an rtlsdr, I did use a ham-it-up for a while before switching over to an RSP1 clone. The only reason why my RSP1 clone is beating the 7300 is because it has a few things in its favour. The SDR antenna is 50m away from the house rather than right next to it, reducing the floor somewhat, and the antenna has a homebrew pre-amp inside the head of it throwing the SDR more signal as well. Using the same antenna, I'd expect the 7300 to win every time. As I operate remote, I gave my SDR a web interface - OpenWebRX+, I usually zip across the bands with that first and then bring the 7300 to what I see, especially as the 7300's waterfall is unusable over a serial connection.
Hi Hayden, I've had a SDRPlay RSP1A for about 6 years now, I'm all over this, sure I could have better receiving antennas, but this thing really makes up for a LOT! My next step is going to be the RSPDuo, I look forward to this series! The only thing you need to be careful of with SDR's is when you accidentally transmit with the SDR still connected.
The question is how to make visible a call sign of an HAM opponent whan work on HF bands? Maybe there need to incorporate a voice recognition submodule....?

Loved Simon’s software when I was a Windows user. I got so fed up with Windows I swapped over to Mac computers. Simon stated he would not be writing the software for other platforms 😢. I miss using the software because you can use it to tx as well as rx these days.
the lack of filtering, the ENOB will make it a nice thing to look at generally what happens. But that's basically it. I have seen signals that could not be pinpointed at all on the spectrum as they were everywhere, making it hard to find them on a rig that doesn't get overloaded. So: nice but no, not a competitor for reasonable recent rigs (like 10years+)
For a beginner that does not yet get into the FT8 area of the spectrum, is there a simpler set up that can be used just to see the signals that are out there for phone on SSB on the bands. I thing this software is amazing and would love to use it with my G90 Thanks and 73
Yep! So in the video I briefly showed dialing up SSB and CW. You can output that audio to some speakers, or any audio device on your PC for listening - and depending on what SDR you buy, you can listen over a very wide range at the same time
Hi Hayden, On the strength of this video I purchased an RTL-SDR dongle and downloaded and installed the software. It is, as you say, extremely versatile EXCEPT the audio is awful. I'm running this on my laptop and it sounds like the audio is clipping. There are numerous reports on the www about this, and I have failed to find a solution. Curiously, if I record the audio through SDR Console, the playback is perfect! Have you had any experience with this or discovered a solution? PS. I tired to connect with you when we were travelling in Tassie but you were away at a ham convention in the states at the time :(
Hey mate, I've not noticed any audio issues myself - but I'm using headphones and not speakers? Also double check AGC is turned on too - especially if you're listening to SSB.
@HamRadioDX I get the same distortion regardless of whether I use the laptop speakers or Bluetooth headphones. Curiously, if I record the audio, the playback is perfect. If I use SDRSharp ... no problems. I have reached out to the SDR Console community, but no joy yet.
@@HamRadioDX I've found a solution. The bandwith for the RTL-SDR was set to max at 3Mhz .... BUT this caused the distortion. As soon as I dropped it down to 2.8Mhz or less, it suddenly came good and is now a pleasure to listen to.
Does anyone know what to click on to JUST GET THE Console download? I keep getting what appears to be adds. This looks like what I wished SDR-Uno looked like. A clean, uncluttered look. I'm wanting to use this as a panadapter with the FTdx-3000. Thanks N9XFX

The SDR Console is only for Windows? The dropbox link for the 64 bit broken, not sure if the source in there. Maybe there is a github or something. Anyway thanks for the video!
A nice place to start with SDR regarding the hardware you showed but to suggest its the best is a total exaggerated comment, If you had a SunSdr2, Flex, Anan or Elad sdr you would know what I mean, My SunSdr2 allows you to view 80 Mhz of the band in one hit.
Thanks..Great info. I look forward to the next videos on this subject. Maybe compare SDR Console to SDR Uno?? Uno is what I happen to use with my SDRPlay rspdx. I have briefly tried console but did not understand it very well. I know enough about computers to be dangerous, but not even close to guru status. Hi Hi 73's Tim - K5DEZ
The more you get into it the more of a SDR you can get. it's good to start with the RTL-SDR ~$30 and then you can move up to HackRF1 ($140) which has a large bandwidth ~30Mhz-5GHZ and is Half-Duplex.
Sounds great. I've never used waterfalls or sdr software, actually wouldn't know how to, but iam getting down to s2 qso,s cw on my ts 480hx, so maybe that's OK, and I hate sitting looking at screens hi.
Windows only. Sorry but that ends the interest in this review for me. SDRconnect works great for me on Linux, and also apparently works on Mac and Windows.
Wow, Hayden! As a fairly recently licensed Ham (3 years or so) who is still enjoying the phone portions of the bands, and has pretensions of becoming a good CW operator, this is certainly VERY INTERESTING! This looks like something one would need to apply within a good shack with a HiRes monitor. Almost there. As always, thank you. From S.E. Tenn.,USA KQ4IXD
I can't tag all of you in this thread so I just want to tell you move on There's no need to be snobby and tell everybody you're leaving the video and then hang around to watch and see who says anything about it. We don't need to know that you're leaving the video. If it's not for you keep on scrolling till the next video. Sad Hams
@davidclifford4536 good point 👍 Also reminds me of the old saying about if a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to hear it does it make a sound?
It depends on their RX (and TX) capabilities of course too. There are too many variables at play, but the best thing you can do is optimize your RX. TX is easy, just peddle faster (more power!!)
It would be a great idea to buy a Nooelec RTL for $35 and try out what you have just shown in each video. Yes they are the bottom of the range SDRs but are great for learning with.
Calling on all hams to track down what frequencies the drones on the east coast (US) are being controlled by and reporting it to any authority (like local law enforcement) Since a lot of people are getting scared right now by this "unknown" invasion it seems appropriate that we as hams can potentially make an impact like in our recent hurricanes down south. All it would take is to monitor and report if you are on the east coast or any of the affected areas.... 73's and happy signal hunting
Allegedly some people seem to think they are Military in nature. There is an AF base in NJ with some manned drone taxi type research programs. I don't know why if its military they wouldn't just acknowledge it without giving any details. so Be safe.
i used sdruno a lot in the beginning... but sdrconsole is so much better to use.. much more waterfall options and settings... i love my sdrplay unit.. but with the software from simon..
Best for ham radio on Windows...maybe. I prefer SDR++. And for an SDR that has a ton of demodulators and decoders...SDRAngel. Both support SDRPlay devices.
Video was great but the software/website you mentioned is to confusing to download. First off you're greeted with a nice download button then transferred to a screen asking for a donation and several other buttons to download software and if you click on those it redirects you to sign in to your Microsoft account when I know im already signed in. So that tells me that they want your password. So no thanks. They can keep their "free" software/spyware.
To many adverts to put a search engine in and a stupid program called fast which both i had to take out ,would have been nice to let us know of the fact and to what button to press on ,you getting paid by them by any chance.
For the LInux folks I'd suggest you look into Dragon OS it has like 50 tools and many SDR drivers. It can run on a Raspberry Pi + Touch-screen Tablet. You just might have to select your device once detected. It's almost overkill but it basically has everything. I have a Raspberry pi tablet that looks like the ones on the tables at Olive Garden or Chillis in some restaurants I can do demos and teach others pretty easily. it makes a good stand-alone device and just plug up SDRs to it. Basically it's like Kali Linux but all in one for SDR tools for many purposes.
How do you expect the the developer to support paying for the costs of keeping it free?

@@HamRadioDX Eeh? If it's free, how does opening the source code make it any less profitable? There's a bunch of paid software that's FOSS, too, y'know. And the app uses lots of open-source components.

You can start with a $30 RTL-SDR and later move up to $140 HackRF1 with way more features and bandwidth. Hope that helps :)
I'm a mac user and no fan of Windows, but it's worth persisting for SDR Console believe me... I have a secondhand ThinkPad I use for ham radio software, just because the variety of software under windows is greater than mac osx or Linux. There are options...
Run Dragon OS Linux its a whole Distro All in one like a ton of tools for SDR and many drivers for it. You can put it on a Raspberry Pi or a PC. You may have to specify the radio once the OS detects it but after that its overkill.
Until you want to use anything above 6m. I am very tempted by the 8400, but the case is too large and bulky. If it were the size of the 6700, I'd consider it.

Flex is always willing to listen to their customers..you can get on the support call with a lead engineer there and ask for help to do whatever it is you're into on UHF/VHF and they probably will have several solutions ready for you to consider. Don't give up because you read a sales brochure on Flex Radio and figured it was a dead end..they have VERY responsive and helpful support.
No I don't think SDR would support DMR you'd still need the DMR Hotspot for that. I have found Android Droid-Star beta app and it uses my Android phone as a DMR device to get up on Brandmeister.
I currently use the ic7300. I have been debating whether to go “backwards” to the ts590sg. I will strongly consider your opinion in decision. 73’s
Thanks Tom! I've got quite a few tests and other videos I want to go through soon
That’s the exact setup I’ll be doing! Nice one 👍
Hayden, this was a great video!
(All of yours usually are, so not really surprised)
I’ve been thinking about doing exactly this in my own shack; and would absolutely love it if you did a series of in-depth videos about how you set this up and what kinds of challenges (if any) you’ve encountered and how you solved them.
I’m very interested in the antenna switch gizmo you mentioned, and am looking forward to seeing what else you have to say about it!
Thanks for the video and the time you put into this. Very useful and enjoyable!
I have a few more things to cover on this software and SDR’s in general! Thanks, look forward to you watching the next one 👍
@@HamRadioDXAwesome! :)
This is excellent. I know what I’m getting myself for Christmas 😂
The RX-888 MKII? I’ve been considering that SDR
@HamRadioDX the web-888 is almost the same as the RX, but it's over LAN so can make it accessible on the Web/remote.same manufacturer.
How do you use SDR-Console with IC-7610's dual VFOs?
@@ch716 You have to create a separate radio profile for the 2nd VFO. I followed a howto I found online at the time.
I run this program with an SDR Play combined with the rx out on my Yaesu FTdx-3000. Also running Log4OM and Omni-rig. This gives me a panadapter spectrum view of the band and point and click changing of frequency. It's easy to set up and is a great program.
Great setup! How do you find the SDR Play vs your Yaesu?
@HamRadioDX I prefer the Yaesu, but the Play is very good as well.
Thanks for the tip - 73
Thanks Rob. Yeah some of the Airspy units, like the HF+ discovery have gaps and don't include 6m..
Yes DPD in the 7610 is awesome
Used SDR Console for a few years now...... The Easiest & Best Software for SDR Play, etc that i have used!
Been using Simons software - SDR console for years it's great. No doubt the best sdr software
Keep up the great work
Wayne VK3ECS.
Hi Wayne,
At the start of the video I explained I have used SDR’s in the past but the software was pretty clunky and didn’t do much.
SDR Console has so much capability, next few videos will hopefully demonstrate that.

I have dongles V3 and now V4.
I also have the SDR Play Duo.
Great used for them all.

This softwear is great! I was using SDR# but will only be using SDR Console going forward, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome!
Brilliant video! I'm going to download and donate something to Simon!
@@HamRadioDX
it's all the things you don't know about that make it interesting.
like finding some HF club members in the middle of the outback chatting.
Thanks.
Check my latest video mate - walkthrough of downloading and install.

Great video! I agree the software blows away anything else out there. I'm curious if you or anyone here knows of a good android app for SDR that will similarly let you zoom out to see the entire band. I've been looking for that feature in an SDR software for my tablet for a good while now. Thanks!
Sorry I can't help with the Android question. I'm an iOS user myself. But there might be someone out there that knows?
I'll add my request for the walkthrough video that you mentioned the potential for.
Thank you.
Cool! Will do
G'day Hayden.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll have a go at testing it on different bands and comparing. The gain settings might need tweaking in SDRC?
@HamRadioDX yeah I tried all that was back on it tonight, whilst I openly acknowledge SDRC does a lot of things a lot of other SDR's don't do seeing weak stations compared to SDRP using the Duo & Uno ( at least in the FMBC Band ) is not one of them.
If I'm wrong & have missed something happy to be shown / told 😅.
Look forward to your further feedback Hayden

Wayne,
The SDRplay devices have several built in notch filters.
Hope that helps / 73

The problem I have with SDR Console site is that it's riddled with download buttons that have nothing to do with the software. It's so bad I can't tell where the real one is. A lot these kind of buttons are just means to distribute malware.
What is your antenna set up for your SRD? Looking forward to future videos on this topic!
SUBSCRIBED - I've got one of the RTL-SDR USB devices and want to find awesome ways to use it.
Glad you’re here - I’ve got more videos showing how to use your RTL-SDR dongle with this software coming soon
I'll be looking forward to your setup video.
Thanks! Working on it now!
I'm going to have to go back through the archives and watch JoBrett!

Hi Hayden,
I've had a SDRPlay RSP1A for about 6 years now, I'm all over this, sure I could have better receiving antennas, but this thing really makes up for a LOT!
My next step is going to be the RSPDuo, I look forward to this series!
The only thing you need to be careful of with SDR's is when you accidentally transmit with the SDR still connected.
The SDRSwitch allows the SDR to stay inline and stay protected!
The RSPduo sounds interesting mate
use this for a couple of years with a pluto sdr. Number 1 software to go...
The question is how to make visible a call sign of an HAM opponent whan work on HF bands? Maybe there need to incorporate a voice recognition submodule....?
Ham It Up Plus v2 - Extend the Range of Your RTL-SDR, NESDR or Other Radio Down to 300Hz. HF/MF/LF/VLF/ULF Upconverter and Panadapter w/TCXO & Switchable LNA/Passthrough Options

Will they release a Linux version of SDR Console in the near future?
Can you connect the FT-710 to an SDR software?
Loved Simon’s software when I was a Windows user. I got so fed up with Windows I swapped over to Mac computers. Simon stated he would not be writing the software for other platforms 😢. I miss using the software because you can use it to tx as well as rx these days.
Can you use bootcamp or a VM?
Windows... sucks...

@1cubealot Yep!
What's a good antenna to pair with this?
the lack of filtering, the ENOB will make it a nice thing to look at generally what happens. But that's basically it.
I have seen signals that could not be pinpointed at all on the spectrum as they were everywhere, making it hard to find them on a rig that doesn't get overloaded.
So: nice but no, not a competitor for reasonable recent rigs (like 10years+)
Thanks for the video, I love your channel - Got a bit excited , but no Mac OS version..?
Nah sorry only Windows, but there are options. You can spin up a VM or bootcamp on a Mac
For a beginner that does not yet get into the FT8 area of the spectrum, is there a simpler set up that can be used just to see the signals that are out there for phone on SSB on the bands. I thing this software is amazing and would love to use it with my G90
Thanks and 73
Yep! So in the video I briefly showed dialing up SSB and CW. You can output that audio to some speakers, or any audio device on your PC for listening - and depending on what SDR you buy, you can listen over a very wide range at the same time
RTL is less selective but quite cheap. RSP1A is more expensive but also better. Your radio is even better of course, and can transmit too ;-)
What antenna configuration are you using?
HF - DX Commander vertical

Hi Hayden,
On the strength of this video I purchased an RTL-SDR dongle and downloaded and installed the software.
PS. I tired to connect with you when we were travelling in Tassie but you were away at a ham convention in the states at the time :(
Hey mate,
I've not noticed any audio issues myself - but I'm using headphones and not speakers?
Can’t seem to get it to recieve wfm commercial radio , unsure what I’ve done wrong , work for anyone else ?
Does anyone know what to click on to JUST GET THE Console download? I keep getting what appears to be adds. This looks like what I wished SDR-Uno looked like. A clean, uncluttered look. I'm wanting to use this as a panadapter with the FTdx-3000. Thanks N9XFX

The more you get into it the more of a SDR you can get. it's good to start with the RTL-SDR ~$30 and then you can move up to HackRF1 ($140) which has a large bandwidth ~30Mhz-5GHZ and is Half-Duplex.

It's amazing how much you can see with an SDR & waterfall! Once you start using and get comfortable with one, you'll never go back.
Can you transmit from sdr console connected to ic-7160?
I have yet to explore many of the functions. One which will be in an upcoming video is Omni-Rig and transmitting
How do you get past all the misdirects to actually download sdr-console? NOT, "Get Fast!", and whatever else is obfuscating the actually software?

Wow, Hayden! As a fairly recently licensed Ham (3 years or so) who is still enjoying the phone portions of the bands, and has pretensions of becoming a good CW operator, this is certainly VERY INTERESTING! But if the other station can't hear you does it matter if you hear all of them?
How do you know they can't hear you if yiu didn't call them???
@davidclifford4536 good point 👍
Also reminds me of the old saying about if a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to hear it does it make a sound?
It depends on their RX (and TX) capabilities of course too. There are too many variables at play, but the best thing you can do is optimize your RX. TX is easy, just peddle faster (more power!!)
It would be a great idea to buy a Nooelec RTL for $35 and try out what you have just shown in each video. Yes they are the bottom of the range SDRs but are great for learning with.
I have one in my shopping cart 😉
The rtl-sdr v4 has an up converter.
If an internet will go down how the SDR will work?
It works by receiving radio signals, this software does not use the internet.
The software is on your computer not on the internet. You do not need an internet connection.

How do you expect the the developer to support paying for the costs of keeping it free?
@@HamRadioDX Eeh? If it's free, how does opening the source code make it any less profitable? There's a bunch of paid software that's FOSS, too, y'know. And the app uses lots of open-source components.

Yeah mate

@@HamRadioDX I think he wanted to hear the audio coming from the SDR output.

No Linux build. 👎
Linux has a all-in-one tool called Dragon OS and it runs great on a Raspberry Pi +touch screen tablet. it has a ton of tools and SDR drivers ready to go. its overkill so many different function programs. You can start with a $30 RTL-SDR and later move up to $140 HackRF1 with way more features and bandwidth. Hope that helps :)
Crap... Windows only, Malware eh?
Run a VM
I'm a mac user and no fan of Windows, but it's worth persisting for SDR Console believe me... I have a secondhand ThinkPad I use for ham radio software, just because the variety of software under windows is greater than mac osx or Linux. There are options...
@@cthoadmin7458 Dragon OS in Linux
Run Dragon OS Linux its a whole Distro All in one like a ton of tools for SDR and many drivers for it. You can put it on a Raspberry Pi or a PC. You may have to specify the radio once the OS detects it but after that its overkill.
Get a Flex Radio..you'll never touch another toy SDR again.
Until you want to use anything above 6m. I am very tempted by the 8400, but the case is too large and bulky. If it were the size of the 6700, I'd consider it.
@@wxfield Nonexistent customer support. I'd rather buy a toy SDR, at least I know what I'm getting into.
@@ch716 There are transverters available as well as plans/schematics for such. VA3MW has done a number of videos explaining how to integrate various transverters into a Flex environment. If you want to do EME, I have had great success with my older 6600M (that I sold a couple years ago) with a DEMI 2m xvrt.
@@wxfield Imagine spending $2500 on a Q5 transverter only discover the flex doesn’t even have DCS or CTCSS squelch. Flex could be great.
@@Sp3cTech ...a common refrain by Polish technicians.
Will sdr console do motarola dmr , or narrow fm didgital ?
No I don't think SDR would support DMR you'd still need the DMR Hotspot for that. I have found Android Droid-Star beta app and it uses my Android phone as a DMR device to get up on Brandmeister. You could recieve digital radio on SDR but it would probably just be Tones without the ability to decode it. Hopefully that helps :)
