I retired from the military and my girlfriend is haole so I don't speak pidgin anymore. One time we ran into one of my old friends from school so we started talking story and my girlfriend said "I didn't know you could speak pidgin" I told her I wasn't speaking pidgin, I was speaking English, and she said "no that was pidgin" Too funny, it's amazing how you can switch it without even thinking about it.
Thats my mom right there. Since she moved away she stopped speaking it, but as soon as she met someone from the island it come back immediately. She confused the hell out of her friends lol. Man I remember that night she met that auntie at the volleyball game, they were the loudest in the stadium haha.

Haoles born and raised in Hawaii, yeah. Haoles live in Hawaii over 10 years or more and communicate with locals, yeah they can speak pigeon. Haoles just move to Hawaii, hell no.

For foreigners, the key to Hawaiian Pidgin English is...
You gotta speak fas’, and you gotta limit the amount of pause/space between your words when speaking.
Example (and I’ll just use two simple words here). In English, a foreigner to Hawaii will say “okay, then”. In Pidgin English, a foreigner in Hawaii will say “kay den”, with emphasis on the “kay”. That’s too long. In pidgin English, “okay, then” is simply “K, den”. The key here is pronouncing “K”very abruptly, no ‘a’ or ‘y’ pronunciation should exist in this case.
The part that throws foreigners off is, once they think they have the Pidgin English down, native Pidgin English speakers will throw them a curve ball and dissect the very same word or phrases and shorten it even more.
Example: “K, den” can also be shortened by saying “kep”. This is usually what would sound like an outburst, or very very abrupt burst of a word, in this case “kep”, which means “okay” or “okay, then” and will usually sound rude from the person who is saying it, however, 99.9% of the time, outbursts of Pidgin English words are not rude by the speaker. Hope this helps.

P.S. You see how I ended with saying “kep”. I just realized that in this case, ending with kep is also like saying you are done, or ‘don’t want to continue’.
So yeah, Hawaiian Pidgin English is actually very confusing. I would suggest you just don’t even.

I lived in Hawaii for 25 yrs( age 5-25). I would break into pidgin with my local friends, but would speak " plain" English with my haole friends.

I stay from Mililani HI, but been on da mainland for over 10 years already. It still slips out when I talk on the mainland. “Yeah we had a good weekend man, went bowling, talk story, and had one good time.”
“Talk story?”
Me: “oh, yeah I meant just talking, in Hawai`i we say talk story instead of chew the fat, or shoot the breeze or having conversations. That just sounds weird to me!” 😂
I also still say “under the lanai” instead of “breeze way” or gazebo lol. Mainland words 🤣
Oh and for my dog or family, I always say naturally “chow’t” instead of “watch out” or “excuse me” if I need to get by or something lol

My family both sides were raised in hawaii. I was the only one born off island bc my dad was stationed in Kentucky. They moved back when I was 2 so I grew up in Waianae. Spent 10 years growing up there(I'm 14) Tho my parents grew up in waianae they do speak pidgin but only when speaking to relatives or cousins so I never really spoke pidgin. There is some words tho that comes naturally in pidgin, but I always speak pidgin when I'm mad.
I can only imagine what it's gonna be like once my fiancé comes to visit me (here in Hawaii), we're long distance (he resides in Pennsylvania) & plans to spend at least a month here with me (when he comes to visit in a few months) & yes, he is Caucasian... I can only imagine if (during the time he's here) he picks up on the pidgin English, and when he goes home to Pennsylvania, my (future) mother in law, my (future) sister & brother in laws, & everyone is gonna wonder, "WTF are you saying?" 🤣😂 I think I might die laughing (if that happens) 🤣😂 Or I'll have to be the pidgin English translator 🤣😂

I was raised in Lahaina Maui and learned pidgin from a young age. I later went on to sell cars in Honolulu and would talk pidgin over the phone to local customers and when they would come to see me for the first time in person, I would introduce myself and they would ask for the Hawaiin guy on the phone not the Haole standing in front of them. Thank God for those Pidgin To Da Max books.. hahaha! #Lunas4L

I think its difficult for any outsider. Skin tone has nothing to do with it. It's part of the culture here and and should be used more frequently.
But you also get this people who really can't put a sentence together, weather they're speaking pidgin or English.

It’s just weird for me growing up with foreign parents but all my friends are local🤣 so like I do understand everything but I can’t speak 🤡
My dad was from Kaua’i, and they have some of the heaviest and strongest pidgin out there. Here’s an example of something he said in front of my UC Berkeley classmates:
“Foodland, I go stay go, you go stay come?”
Translation: I’m going to go to Foodland, would you like to join me?
Think of “stay” and in “to exist” or “doing”...so just add “-ing to”. So “I go stay go” changes to “I go-ing to go”. In the case where someone say “I stay McDonalds”...in that case it’s the “existing” part, so they’re saying that they’re at McDonalds.

People that have not grown up in Hawai’i will never get the nuances and tone of pidgin speakers. I can tell instantly if someone speaks pidgin if they grew up here or pretending.

Lucky did that way back in the late Forties. He did it with different accents mimicking Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, etc.

I dunno why all the mainland people want to speak pidgin now. I mean, I guess it's better than saying it's for people "too lazy to think of the right thing" as one book about Hawaii we had when I was a kid, put it. But why push so hard?
As a haole, i see both sides 😂😂😂😂 i love the hawaiian culture but ive never been there and would be pointed out as a haole real fast. I would also never try to insult someone by intentionally mimicking their native accent. Thats downright disrespectful although i can see how they might slip similar to how i started saying "bro" when it became popular.

“Rebellious English”, is actually called Hawaiian creole pidgin and it’s an official language of Hawaii. It’s not something you going understand for a long time, most people speak pidgin more then they speak English in Hawaii. It’s all about who you talking to and if they can understand or not

I think what she meant was, it sounds "rebellious" to her, because it breaking the rules of the language, if speaking "proper English." But the thing is, that Hawai'i pidgin is not just some dialect of English, or slang. A lot of foreigners to Hawai'i make that assumption. I guess they need to realize that's not the case. It has been officially recognized as its own language, for good reason. Despite being closest sounding to English, it also has its roots in various other languages that existed in the infancy of Modern Hawai'i. That's why it is not just a dialect or slang of English....
So it might sound "rebellious" or "incorrect" to an English speaker, but yeah... As they say, "This aint the Mainland!"
Its basically shortcutting english. If u can speak pidgin u have a good foundation of other accents n languages. We go is lets go. Where u stay is where u at. I gon go is im gonna go. Everything can also be said in regular english with just pidgin pronunciation
Haoles came from the ones that No Hau, ole hau, which is the breath of life the the Hawaiian's shared. The foreigners didnt share the breath so they called them haoles or The ones that no breath.

It took many races to come up with so many technical advances. I know because I worked in the technical field as an electonic engineer since the Fifties. It is too bad that not many Hawaiians are in this field. I am part Hawaiian, but it is lonely in my field. We used to make fun of the haoles and their "good English". How stupid we were. I can speak proper English, but my accent gives me away plus some word pronunciation. I am a good English writer though. We need to have one foot in pidgin English and the other in proper English.

haole here from the main land i am learning about the hawaiian culture and its very fascinating. I've always dreamed of moving to hawaii one day, i live in florida now and hate it here. Please just take everyone on an individual basis and not generalize all whites or all people of a culture because there are some of us who are good people.

Go to Kauai, on the west side of the island. Some white people (mostly descendants of Portuguese farmworkers) speak Pidgin like the rest of the locals.

Plenty times I get one black or latino guy (typically from the military) coming in at my workplace and they do something that automatically makes me think "brah, frickin haole" LMAO

I have a lot of Caucasian friends who were born and raised here and speak nothing but pidgin. It’s not a race thing, it’s a local thing. And I don’t suggest that haole people, mainlanders of any race, try to speak pidgin...I was born and raised here and I barely speak pidgin. They’d look as silly as me trying to do that. My dad and bro speak a lot of pidgin, but my mom and I don’t...but we can understand everything they’re saying, we just don’t speak it much.
