  • I don't enjoy drying my car after a wash, and its not good for the paint or the wax. So I have decided never to do it again!
But to do that I need the help of a new toy. Thats never put me off anything previously. So in this video I do some experiments with a race glaze zero ppm filter using using mixed resin bed technology, to make my dream come true.
Join me to see if I can now throw the chamois leather and ring towels away.
Here is a link to the filter I bought. It is not in any way sponsored, I paid for this myself and the link is NOT an affiliate link.

Hi John. A bit off topic. But I wanted to give you, and especially MATT ARNOLD. a massive shout out and thank you. After a YEAR of throttle bodys, coils, and a million different codes. I went down the route of getting the condensers in the ECU looked at on Grandad´s Jag. Absolutly PERFECT!! I was lucky to have a computer guy here in Mallorca who used to work for VW, he got it sorted. And it runs like a dream. Exactly as MATT said, condensers were gone and had rust, Grandad is over the moon and still can´t belive it.
If it was´nt for your channel and subscibers like Matt. the car would be still left under a cover and not being enjoyed. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Peter

John, you have the pressure washer, plumb that thing in. Then when you rinse, not only does it take less than a minute to rinse but you only use maybe a gallon or so and your resin will last about 4 times as long. I put a system in a couple years ago and did just that. Mine is a dual filter and each filter holds about a quart of resin (in other words, just a fraction of the size of yours) and I get the whole season out of them. Then I bought a $60 bag of resin (5# maybe?) and it has enough resin to refill my filters 5 or 6 times. I used PVC to plumb the bypass so I wash with tap water going into the pressure washer, then when I'm ready to rinse I throw a few valves, pressure rinse in about 20 seconds and walk away. I wash my XKR in less than 10 minutes - even with the top down! :D For washing I have a foam cannon (they're cheap, work great!) and a washing "broom" on a short pole, never even have to bend over, scrub the car down and ready to rinse in about 2-3 minutes. No doubt though, these DI systems work great. I wash my dark colored truck, it dries in minutes in the sun and not a spot! Or even if it's cool and overcast and it takes all day to dry, still no spots!

I've had a different system for years, going back to when I was doing mobile valeting for a living.
Rather than a big chamber of deionising resin, my system uses 3 filters, then a reverse osmosis membrane followed by a small DI chamber.
Yes it wastes more water than it uses and filters slowly, so that water needs storage.
I used an old 1000L IBC container.
It is however far cheaper in total running costs, assuming no water meter.
I use a ppm meter so know the final output is ZERO and around 14 after the first 4 stages, before entering the resin.
I seem to recall straight tap water here last time I checked, was around 380ppm, which if reliant on resin alone, would use a lot of it.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 года назад

Wow. You are well ahead of me in this area Matthew. Practical a water scientist.👍
guess it comes down to a cost V convenience balance.
Your system sounds like the right way to go if you are going to use it in enough volume.
This system is more like a combi boiler. Convenient water on demand v more economical bulk supply but you have to plan ahead.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share.

Hi John, I found your channel whilst researching filter systems to use when washing cars. I was intrigued by your explanation of the “aspect ratio” of the Raceglaze system. You stated that this is an important factor with these systems. I was wondering exactly what evidence you have to support your claim that the taller vessels will outperform the “dumpier” versions. Thanks for the detailed video.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 года назад

Hi Paul. It's just about the number of 'contact points' or 'path length' dependent upon your preferred analogy. The water is forced by the dip tube within the bottle to go to the bottom of the cylinder and then rise through the resin. A tall container will ensure that the water has to make contact with more particles of resin on its longer journey. A wide container that is shorter, may contain the same amount of resin, but the water does not HAVE TO circulate, it HAS TO rise though. So the path and therefore the amount of 'contacts' with the resin is lower in a dumpier container.
(If your flow rate is very low then its less important as the amount of time in the container is increased)
Obviously, water is not flowing in individual globules and not in perfectly straight lines, but the above at least gives you the logic. When these systems are used in industrial applications, where effectiveness and a decent flow rate are required you will often find several parralel resin cartridges that are 2 meters plus tall and 100mm dia. (Washing Silicon wafers, Superfinishing and Honing, Chrome plating plastics...)
      Hope that helps Paul👍

Impressive demonstration John, so the water which has got into the nooks and crannies as with ordinary washing? Presumably after it rains on it, it is back to square one or is it? Had you ever considered a power dryer or tried one? As this blows ordinary water from the bodywork and in the nooks and crannies , just a thought.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to make and share the video, I have the same 14 litre vessel, which I find to be very good.
I've long been looking for a suitable bypass, I would have plumbed something into my garage, like many have, but I use the vessel in different locations so it's more of a mobile unit for me. I've recently stumbled across Clack heads which can accept a Clack bypass add on head, which will be ideal for my needs, but one thing confuses me with those.
They don't have an "inlet" and "outlet" as such, but instead have a "downflow" inlet and "upflow" inlet. Obviously designed to be used either way, but for some reason I always thought the water went down through the resin, and up through the pick up tube, as the tube is usually referred to as the riser?
I honestly can't remember if there is a filter on the bottom of the tube, but if there is then that would make sense. I noticed you are saying the water flows down through the tube and up through the resin, is that correct? Just so I can work out which way to connect the Clack head when I get round to buying it, as I won't be replacing the resin just yet.
Sorry for the extremely long winded question!

Hi Ally. Im not at home at the moment so not in a position to check but an internet search shows generic similar systems flowing the way you suggest. (down through resin and up through center pipe. So I am now doubting myself. I will go and physically check when i am able.

@@ToTheGarage The high expenditure on equipment, installation and servicing maintenance balanced against a little personal time and the dubious assertion that judicious hand-drying damages already protected finishes suggests that few might enjoy such anal retentiveness.

Hi John please don’t be offended, this is meant as some friendly feedback. I’ve been watching your videos and following you for a year or more now John but lately it seems that you’ve really been stringing these videos out and taking 45min for something that could have been covered in 10min. I do appreciate your full explanations and step by step guidance for more complicated tasks, but it was 10min into the video before you even got to the product you were covering in this video. I end up fast forwarding a lot of your video to try and get to the point. Can you do a condensed edit perhaps and then just put a link to the full 45min video for those with a greater interest and more time?

Dont worry Woody, im really hard to offend😁
Defo not stringing them out for any suspicious reasons, and its not an active effort to make longer videos
I realise my style is slow and steady and I do like the details along the way.
Its not for everyone , and I try to make the 'Secrets of the XK8' videos shorter and more direct for balance.
Afraid I cant spare the time to do two edits , so you are stuck with the fast forward button for now. Genuinely thanks for the feedback though👍👍
