Roger is one of Colorado’s premier ski filmmakers. During his tenure, he captured moments in ski history that simply can't be replicated today, including that frontier mentality in the early days of ski area development. As Stewart Oksenhorn put it his "documentary captures the magic that makes the mountain." Roger captures the joy, adventure, beauty, character, and overall essence of being in the mountains.
Initially, Roger Brown was hired by Bob Parker to create Vail’s first promotional film in partnership with Colorado Ski Country USA and United Airlines. The marketing film "Impressions of Vail" helped potential investors at country clubs from coast to coast visualize the future of Vail - and persuade them to contribute the $1.8 million Vail would need to build actual lifts and lodges. Through Roger's lens, the film worked.
His production of "Ski the Outer Limits" helped promote freestyle skiing and led to it becoming an Olympic event. Through his films, Roger changed ski history and helped to dramatically change the way the public views our sport.
His films have won numerous awards including four Emmys. In 2012, he produced Vail’s 50th Anniversary film, "Vail: Rise of America’s Iconic Resort."
The first film we accessioned in our Museum Collection is Roger's "Ski Boom." This 1971 film covers the ski experience and way of life known to ski areas including Steamboat, Breckenridge, Aspen, Heavenly, Park City, and Vail. It shows the development of the ski industry while including famous skiers like Suzy Chaffee, Corky Fowler, Jean-Claude Killy, Stein Eriksen, and Billy Kidd.
