1950s Aspen Footage - Donated by Max Dercum (2008.26.3)
Hall of Fame member Max Dercum donated many items to the Colorado Snowsports Museum since it was founded in 1975. Many of these items include film reels, containing a slice of Colorado's snow sports history and heritage. This digitized footage from the 1950s, in particular, shows the little things that make for the perfect ski day. At Aspen, this film shows sunbathing, riding the lift, the Sundeck, starting that first run, and a woman enjoying what looks like the perfect cheeseburger on the mountain.
Thank you Max Dercum for allowing us to look back and enjoy these moments in ski history.

I am the kid in the race course wearing bib #1. I look to be about 10 yrs. old in this video so I'm thinking it was filmed around 1966. My father, Lou Bowlds, founded this kids program called the Ski JETS and was a business partner of Willy's. We were all kids from Denver and it was the best program going for young Denverite skiers. The top skier to come out of this program was Johnny Buxman who subsequently moved to Vail, made the US Ski Team, and raced World Cup in the Thoeni/Stenmark era. My father also founded the Rocky Mountain News Ski School. He arranged for multiple buses to transport adult skiers from Denver to A-Basin for ski lessons. I think it was like $20 for 4 lessons which included the lessons, lift tickets, and transportation from Denver. What a deal!!

Head metal skis, but about a year before Lange plastic boots were introduced. I would have been about the age of the kids skiing in the video, but I was skiing at Loveland and Geneva Basin most of the time. I can't believe how badly women were treated as sexual objects to be conquered. It would be difficult for men of the 1960s to accept that the best skier in the world in 2024 is female (Mikaela Shiffrin).

OMG, this is so lame, where to start? I watch this for entertainment at how hilarious is her overall inability to explain basic ski movements and concepts. Pole plants and arm movement are linked, but separate. You do not need to 'bring it back", what a lame statement. You simply let your hand continue to move downhill and into the turn over the top of the pole. There is zero need to 'bring it back, whatever that means.

FANTASTIC ! I'm just up the road in breathtaking Westcliffe from Cuchara, and will be getting a season pass to help out a little ! I absolutely loved the presentation because, it reminds me of all the old stories of how Aspen, Steamboat and Vail etc., got started so long ago. Thank you Colorado Museum And Hall of Fame for reaching out to Cuchara. We need to support these independent small ski resorts. Only wealthy people can afford to ski in the elite big resorts now. Skiing was once a wonderful family activity but now, with many resorts at or approaching $300 for a day pass with the horrible economy, and massive inflation of everything, it is making it impossible for most to ski any longer. I'm grateful for ares like Monarch where it is still somewhat affordable.

Some of the skiers are quite good at skiing on the outside edge of the inside ski. The methodology and the equipment have really changed over the years, mostly for the good. Warren Miller made the greatest skiing films each year and used to narrate them in person. Hard to imagine one skier getting to make tracks in the powder alone. Today there would be 50 others right next to each other. The sound on this film is really bad!

  • @chapmyers9272

This was when? As soon as they got in to it, seriously creative lines. As far as the audio drops go, for me sometime less of Warren is more. Inspiring cinematography. Groovy soundtrack. (Edit: Vail cited as America’s newest so 1962-63.)
