This movie was NOT directed by Tim Burton, but by Henry Selick. Poor dude never gets the credit he deserves just because marketing put Burton's name everywhere.
Patchwork Sally is so endearing. She tries her best to thwart Jack and his disastrous Christmas take-over idea. And she does use her limbs quite efficienty to make things go her way. But Jack Skeleton is determined like no other. I guess that's why he's the Pumpkin King.
This was such a wholesome reaction!! This is definitely one of the annual musts, and the songs will grow a place in your heart. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for the awesome reaction Mary! BTW, the "chicken" on the holiday tree in the beginning is actually supposed to be a turkey for Thanksgiving, LOL! 😆 (No worries, only Americans and Canadians would readily get that reference.) Keep up the great work of just being yourself!!! 😊 Happy New Year!!!
The best part about watching movie reactions is seeing someone else absolutely adore something that you have loved for years. It’s like two of your good friends meeting for the first time and really hitting it off. So glad you enjoyed it, Mary!
I was born in 1988, saw this in theaters in 1993, and got the VHS tape for my birthday in 1994. It's been my all-time favourite movie ever since. I have the entire thing memorized line for line and even the way the characters express themselves. I'm always glad when someone sees this movie for the first time 😊 My record for most times watched back-to-back is 7 when I was around 7 or 8 years old and the only reason it wasn't more was because my mom told me I had to go to bed for school in the morning, lol.
What's great about this movie is that it can be seen on Halloween and/or Christmas. I absolutely love the films of Tim Burton whether he produced or directed them. His films are so unique. Being this is your first time watching this film, watch it again in the future. The visuals are extremely amazing when you pay close attention to the details. An example is when Jack is scientifically calculating the meaning of Christmas, just above the end of the equation is the date that the movie was released. There are other little tidbits throughout the movie if you look in the details. I look forward to your next reaction. 🎥
4:50 - I suspect the screaming doorbell is a nod to MURDER BY DEATH. 5:19 - Turkey! Not chicken! 5:53 - Sounds like you’re listening to an, um, alternative version? This song does not contain “f*ck” or “sh*t.” 13:21 - Again, turkey not chicken. And that IS the (radically overcooked) Thanksgiving turkey they’re wheeling out behind the Easter Bunny. 23:07 - C. S. Lewis said that although not every good story for adults is suitable for children, any good story for children is suitable for adults.
Good ol' Nightmare Before Christmas. I remember when that movie came out I believe around 1993. Because it was stop motion it took about 3 years to make I believe
It's stop motion animation with figures/dolls. It's actually directed by Henry Sellick (who also directed Coraline and James & The Giant Peach), but it's still created by Tim Burton and he was the writer & the producer (no worries, people often mistaken that Burton also directed this one).
Burton came up with the idea, the story, the creatures, and the new camera technology to make the movie even possible. Burton was working on Batman Returns and he didn't have the time to dedicate to the laborious stop motion process. So he gave director duties to Harry Selick. He gave the creation of the score to Danny Elfman. (what a Master Stroke) Burton did supervise all the scenes, storyboards, and the overall direction he just didn't do the day-to-day work. He couldn't.
Close. But Burton was actually working on Batman Returns when Nightmare Before Christmas was being made. Beetlejuice was 4 years earlier... and... I wouldn't really say that he supervised all shots... he did have final say on creative decisions but doesn't sound like he was very hands-on, only coming by the see how things were going and give his input (and occasionally kick holes in the wall when someone disagreed with him) a few times over the course of the production. The lion's share of the credit for this movie IMO goes to 3 people: Burton for the idea, story, and original characters; Selick for actually directing it and bringing Burton's vision to life, and then Danny Elfman for writing all (and performing many) the songs where the majority of the story is told and characterization takes place.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Thanks for the heads up regarding which movie he was working on. Beetlejuice, Batman or Batman Returns. I do see where creative heads will bump, since he's not doing the work, so he has no ide of the day to day technical challenges. I did read one of these clashes came during the creation of the doorknob reflection shot. It would be unparalleled in stop motion animation but they almost didn't achieve it. Since it was such a challenge to overcome. and it too months to figure out.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Danny Efman's song writing was so amazing it's mind blowing. So I can easily see Burton leaving him to his own devices. I guess thts why Elfman has worked on the score for almost every Tim Burton movie. Burton knows where to get that special musical magic.
Ooggie Boggie is so much fun and such a prankster. He would make such a great Halloween party host. Picture the Conjuring meets the Exorsist. Damnation on another level.
Hi Mary, Harry Selick directed this movie. He has a great deal of experience with stop motion animation. Tim Burton was hugely smart to have Harry Selick direct this movie. Film is normally projected at 24 frames per second. Therefore, you need 24 pictures for 1 second of movie. It's a very labor intensive process. I'm sure there's a lot more to this kind of animation, but this is a general overview of the procedure.
Mary Christmas! I love this movie, been watching it every year since I was a kid, mostly during October. For me it's a Halloween movie, for others it's a Christmas movie. Take your pick 😁
Stop motion animation is a technique where you set up a static scene and take a picture, then move the subject very slightly and take another picture. Do that enough times and then play it back at an accelerated speed and it creates realistic movement. It's an extremely laborious process. There are several popular Christmas specials from the 60s & 70s that were made with stop motion animation (also called "claymation") which were favorites of Burton's growing up. The initial idea for the movie was to harken back to those old specials that he loved, with the twist of adding the gothic spookiness that he also loved. There are very few studios that still make these kinds of movies. One of the most famous is Laika, which has its workshop near where I live. Their process has gotten so good and smooth that you almost can't tell the difference between it and computer-generated images. Almost a shame in a way because of how much work it takes, it almost looks too good.
and a merry christmas to you too, Mary! Glad you took in this classic, I loved it as a kid and still do.. to be perfect honest, I thought Oogie Boogie was the coolest when I was a little guy; glow-in-the-dark hideout full of traps, vermin for guts, three pistol-packin' slot machines, and a dazzling baritone~
On another Reaction to this movie I asked if a bad dream is a nightmare is a good dream a nightstallion and lots of people commented back that they though it was a fantastic idea. But then I found out that the mare in nightmare doesn't refer to a female horse. It's from the Latin for sea, mare. I still think we can call good dreams nightstallions though.
TNBC Was animated by Henry Selick, Burton was the "ideas man", Also, next Halloween you should watch Sleepy Hollow, Very Burton, Very Halloween, and, AND very "Low Countries" Also also, "ELF"!
Claymation takes forever and a day to make. But when done right, they are fantastic. This is a good one for Halloween or Christmas IMO. And you wouldn't want to live in Halloween town? Awww. I would. 😊
Have you watched the footage of the live concert they do every year of all the songs sung by (almost) every original cast member? Look it up on RUclips if you haven't.
A very Merry Christmas to you, sweetheart. Truly a great film… 2 holidays in one…. No, 3… “BUNNY!” I was swinging on lamp-posts after seeing this in theaters.
Ghostbusters 2 is good for new years Rise of the Guardians is good for anywhere between Christmas and Easter A Christmas movie for you to enjoy next year would be Muppet Family Christmas If you're feeling holiday horror then Santa's Slay is some campy holiday fun And if you would like a holiday movie between Remembrance Day/Memorial Day/Veterans Day and Christmas might I suggest Joyeux Noel An odd little satire of Christmas is Hogfather
Concerning Jack and Oogie Boogie not getting along, I’ve always wondered about that backstory. Few hints are given. Jack tells the trick-or-treaters “to leave Oogie Boogie out of” his Santa caper, suggesting a possible shaky turf agreement between them similar to the witches in the Wizard of Oz, i.e., Oogie Boogie runs the underworld, and Jack rules Halloweentown. They might have clashed in the past, and possibly came to some peace agreement, though Jack took him down pretty quickly, suggesting Oogie was running the Underworld at with Jack’s permission, not because they were equals.
Growing up, I quickly realized that my parents were in the pocket of Big Santa. They reported everything I did that was naughty, and so I had to keep on THEIR good sides, to get them to give favorable reports. This made it necessary to prioritize making all my misdeeds outside of their sphere of notice, and cultivating my personal charm, to keep them won over, at those times when my villainy was exposed..
While the entire film is amazing, the best part (for me at least) would be Oogie Boogie! His Cab Calloway/casino inspired number, his personality, he's a fantastic addition to Disney's villain library. Also, Oogie was the hardest to animate since his puppet was super heavy and difficult to move.
Marij: How is Jack gonna improve Christmas? K2Da_G: Oh Marij, you just wait and see. Christmas will be to die for. Hahahahahahahhahaahhahahah (think of the most evilest laugh you can imagine)

I scrolled down to say this, beat me to it
Also, Coraline is the best.
Now everyone thinks that Burton directed Coraline as well!
of course Burton's name is everywhere. He came up with the idea and all the characters. it would never have been made without him
yeah but doesn’t putting the name of the writter matter more than who directed it? tim burton wrote the story.
"The fuck? The fuck!? The fuck is in the air!" Killed me.

This movie is as made using stop motion. So they would move the figures slightly, take a photo, over and over. So it took a long time to do
I'll admit it makes me chuckle every time a non-American reactor wonders what holiday has a chicken for a symbol.
