One of my favorite Christmas movies that I think you haven't done yet is "It's a Wonderful Life." A beautiful classic film from the 1940s with a great story and brilliant acting!
Soon after this movie came out, the actress who was one of the neighbours, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, would begin starring in a popular sitcom, "Seinfeld", as Elaine. I'm not sure if you've ever seen any episodes of that show, but it was popular throughout the 90s, and reruns are still seen on television and streaming services every now and then.
"reruns are still seen on television and streaming services every now and then" Also an understatement. It's only one of the most syndicated shows in history and made Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David go-zillionaires from the residuals. In addition, Netflix just shoveled out $500 million for the streaming rights.
If I remember right, the setting of start of the movie is a big gag because I'm pretty sure they're supposed to still be in Illinois when they're looking for that tree. But as anyone who lives in Illinois like myself knows, Illinois does not have mountains like that. We got the snow, sure, but it's flat as hell over here.
If you haven’t seen it, “A Christmas Story” is a classic here in the States. May have some things that are US centered, but it’s mostly a great comedy about a kid and his present in the 1950’s (I think). Cheers!
Yes! I think if she enjoyed National Lampoons she would also enjoy "A Christmas Story" (1983). I feel like it has a similar tone where it's got silly slapstick comedy but has an undertone all about family and the holiday season.
Possibly the most famous American Christmas movie in the last 50 years is called "A Christmas Story" about a young boy & his family in the 1950s. Excellent & hilarious. Another fun one is "Mixed Nuts" with an all-star cast.
I always laugh so hard at the sled scene. He doesn't just go fast, he rockets off! LOL :D And Aunt Bethany is my absolutely favorite character! She is so adorble!
The CORE American Christmas movies are the ones that play on TV every single year, and a lot of people end up watching: - Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (by Rankin/Bass) - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (by Rankin/Bass) - The Little Drummer Boy (by Rankin/Bass) - Frosty the Snowman (by Rankin/Bass) - How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 original version) - A Charlie Brown Christmas The four Rankin/Bass movies are all VERY short. You could watch all 4 for one video. Together they total 156 minutes. How The Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas are both only 25 minutes. You could blast through all of the really CORE American Christmas specials real fast. Other classic, great, and/or beloved Christmas movies include: - A Miracle On 34th Street (I've only seen the 1994 remake, and it's fantastic.) - Home Alone - Home Alone 2: Lost In New York - The Santa Clause - Christmas Vacation - A Christmas Story - Gremlins - Jingle All The Way - Elf - Krampus - The Polar Express - A Muppets Christmas Carol - Love Actually - Klaus - Scrooged - It's a Wonderful Life Also neat: - Arthur Christmas - Rise Of The Guardians Arguably: - Die Hard - The Nightmare Before Christmas (which is created to fit into the Rankin/Bass classic style, so I recommend watching the originals R/B specials first, for sort of a context of what they were emulating.) (I'm just listing stuff regardless of if you've seen it or not. And these aren't all MY personal recommendations per se, but rather mostly just a list of all major American Christmas movies. Like I don't personally love Elf, but TONS of people adore it.)
As already pointed out there are several of National Lampoon's vacation movies and all of them are good. In European Vacation they go to visit their relatives in Germany. ;)
This movie is a Christmas tradition here in North America. Glad you enjoyed it). Btw, my grandmother is named Mary and for 16 years we had a Maine Coon cat named Luna))).
Clarks Boss is played by Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray's brother. He often appears in other Bill Murray movies besides the many other roles he's played. Groundhogs Day, if you haven't, you must, and Scrooged! I seconded that!
I'm glad you are ready to dive down the rabbit hole of American Christmas movies. If I may suggest a couple, I would start with the classic "White Christmas" and "A Christmas Story".
Fun Fact: Aunt Bethany was played by Mae Questel. She was best known for providing the voices for the animated characters Betty Boop (from 1931) and Olive Oyl (from 1933). Christmas Vacation was her final film role.
My dad reminds me of Clark's boss; grumpy and serious. When the part came on where Aunt Bethany says the pledge of allegiance, I've never seen him laugh so hard that he cried. Love this movie!
The tree harvesting scene was filmed on the road I live on just a few miles from here tho now it doesn't look that way anymore (wider, more lanes). The sledding scene in the trees was also in that same area tho up in mountains off the road. The end of the sledding scene was filmed in the town of Frisco main street at our Wal-Mart. The attic scene was filmed in the gym of the high school. They built a full attic inside the gym. The shopping scene with the crazy amount of dog food was in our Wal-Mart.
This is the third movie in the series. The first film was written by John Hughes, the same guy who wrote Breakfast Club, Weird Science and Uncle Buck amongst other classic 80's classics
National Lampoon was a comedy magazine. The Vacation movies are based on a series of stories in the magazine written by some of their best writers. The concept was the writers all took all of thier worst & most horrible vacation moments, exagerrated them to maximize the laughs, and had them all happen to one fictional family. And that's how we got the Grizwalds. I'm glad you enjoyed Christmas Vacation. There's also the firstNational Lampoon's Vacation, European Vacation, Vegas Vacation, and I just found uot there's a Christmas Vacation 2. Also they did a reboot of the franchise in 2015 just called Vacation. If you decide to watch them, I hope you have a fun ride down that Holiday Road.
National Lampoon was a humor magazine that was a spin-off of the humor magazine of Ivy League university Harvard called the Harvard Lampoon. Lots of famous comedy writers have worked for both versions of the Lampoon. Also, to lampoon means to mock or crititicize using humor and sarcasm.
Merry Christmas Mary!! Some movies I've always enjoyed at this time of the year are "It's a Wonderful Life", "The Christmas Story" and "Elf". You can't go wrong with any one of them!
The shot of the ‘Trees’ sign being hit by several clods of dirt, followed by a car flying through the air and flattening it, is one of my favourite scenes in any Comedy.
National Lampoon was an American humor magazine mostly popular in the 1970's that did a lot of parody. The magazine spawned a bunch of books, magazines, theater, radio shows and films.
Merry Christmas, Mary! Christmas movies: It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story come to mind. Also, Die Hard and Die Hard 2 are considered Christmas movies. Aunt Bethany was played by an actress who did the voice of Betty Boop in the 1930's and 40's. The National Lampoon was a satirical magazine who produced several movies. This was one of them.
8-bit Christmas is a new one this year. Niel Patrick Harris tells a story of a Christmas when he was a kid in the 80's. Best Christmas movie I have seen in a long time. Thanks for watching this one!
National Lampoon started out as a comedy magazine then branched out into movies. It's a company kind of like Marvel or DC except for comedy instead of superheroes.
Overloading outlets with too many extensions is a bad idea no matter what country you are in, just a case of how far are you willing to go before the risk is too great.
My favorite Christmas movie is Mixed Nuts! (starring Steve Martin) I don't know if you could find it anywhere, but I highly recommend it; it's little known and underrated, but very funny!
I think you would love; - One Magic Christmas Other recommends; - The Santa Clause - Miracle on 34th Street - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer - A Charlie Brown Christmas
18:06 - I always have 2 new pairs of headphones in stock, because every year, no matter how I try, my cat will eat the wire on at least 3-4 pairs. She loves nothing more!
So lampoon means "to make fun of" and National Lampoon was a comedy magazine in the the 1970s. They starting making comedy movies about the same time, the best of which is "Animal House." But they make several "Vacation" movies including "Vacation, " "European Vacation" and "Christmas Vacation."
I watched this movie with my three children when it came out in in 1989 and we laughed as hard as you did. They watch it every Christmas to this day. Thanks for reacting to it.
The Elf is another good Xmas movie. As for national lampoon's, the first one where they go to wally world and European vacation are classics and hilarious
A joy to watch you Mary. Christmas Vacation is a must every year in our house, once you hear that song at the beginning you know Christmas is on! Other must watch Christmas movies in the U.S. are (Short list): It's A Wonderful Life (1946. The black and white or colorized version are both so good) Scrooge (1951 with Alastair Sim) (The 1984 version with George C Scott is also on the list) A Christmas Story (1983) (You'll love this Mary) Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Scrooged (1988 with Bill Murray) Cartoons: How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966 - 30 minutes) Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (1964 Stop motion animation. 60 minutes) Personal favorites: Silent Night (TV Movie 2002 Linda Hamilton. A German mother who takes her young son to a cabin between the U.S. and German fronts in WW2 near the end of WW2) Holiday Switch (TV Movie 2007) Die Hard (1988 Bruce Willis - Action movie set at Christmas and yes it's a Christmas movie!) Not so short I guess and there are many others.
The reason why Beverly D'Angelo is holding Chevy Chase's junk is because it was improvised. She wanted to do something funny and hoping that it would be in the movie and it did. When Chevy was hitting on the Santa and the reindeer ornaments he actually broke a finger but he still kept the scene going.
Btw, often in corporate jobs a very, very large portion of your earnings comes from bonuses. For my father when I was growing up, it was up to 40% of what he'd earn that year. So, yeah... if the company does it that way then that bonus might be quite a lot.
They had four different "stunt turkeys" built for the dinner scene and two of them malfunctioned. Also the squirrel they trained for the squirrel scene died the night before they were to shoot the scene so they used an "untrained" squirrel in the scene.
Another class American Christmas movie is "Miracle on 34th Street". I'm not sure if you have reviewed it, but the scene with the little Dutch girl gets me every time.
a christmas bonus check used to be one years salary but then bosses wanted to keep that money for themselves so it got cut to half a year to now its either nothing or a very small amount
There are 3 movies that feature the Griswold Family National Lampoon's Vacation 1983 National Lampoon's European Vacation 1985 and Vegas Vacation 1996 and they all take place during the summer
Merry Christmas, Mary! I love your laugh! Miracle On 34th Street is one of my favorites; the 1947 version with Maureen O'Hara. There's a scene in there with a little Dutch girl singing with Kris Kringle and I would like you to translate for me. 🎅🎄❤
Mary Christmas! haha :D
Omg mari this was amazing! 😂
And to you! :)
Merry Christmas.....love to watch you enjoy a happy movie.
‘Tis the season to be Mary :)
Great reaction Mary I really enjoyed this, you certainly helped me get into the Christmas spirit. :)
One of my favorite Christmas movies that I think you haven't done yet is "It's a Wonderful Life." A beautiful classic film from the 1940s with a great story and brilliant acting!
I’ve never seen the film but I watched a production of it at Yavipai College in Arizona. Great show!
Popular is an understatement. Almost everybody watched it.
"reruns are still seen on television and streaming services every now and then" Also an understatement. It's only one of the most syndicated shows in history and made Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David go-zillionaires from the residuals. In addition, Netflix just shoveled out $500 million for the streaming rights.
I mentioned this like I did because "Seinfeld" may not be as popular in some parts of the world as it is in North America.
"Bend over & I'll show you," was a running gag in our rag tag gaggle of youngins way back in the day.
The holidays are tough.
Thanks for the laugh 🖤
If I remember right, the setting of start of the movie is a big gag because I'm pretty sure they're supposed to still be in Illinois when they're looking for that tree. "We're gonna have the hap hap happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny fucking K" is probably my favorite delivery in this movie.

The Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye line is a reference to the 1954 film, "White Christmas". It's a fun movie.
The old lady that said the pledge of allegiance at the dinner was the voice actor for the Betty Boop cartoon back in the 20s or 30s or whenever.

It's A Wonderful Life is a classic.
If you're familiar with the TV show The Big Bang Theory, the actor playing Clark's son Rusty is Johnny Galecki, who played Leonard on Big Bang Theory.
The daughter is from Natural Born Killers.
And also in From Dusk til Dawn.
The funny thing about these movies is that each one has different actors playing the kids.

The best daughter is definitely the one from Vegas Vacation.
