I love German Chocolate Cake. It's my favorite type of cake. It's not from Germany, but named after the baker Samuel German, who invented it back in the 30s.
Adam Roberts Exactly! I've had to tell many people that it isn't a German dessert and the chocolate is not from Germany but that it's named after a person. Yes good ol' Sam found a semi-sweet chocolate that was a little sweeter with a lower percentage of cocoa than the regular semi-sweet chocolate. We really should call it by its proper name GERMAN'S chocolate cake but we got lazy and dropped the apostrophe "s" which can cause confusion 😂
It's a great cake. I found out the background of it on Wikipedia, which is one of the best sites out there. It's sad that people are lazy today and would drop the s.
Myrddin Greybeard Well, not quite. Sorry to be nitpick but... Baker's Chocolate Company started in Massachusetts in the early 1800s and was named after the owner, whose name was Baker. They eventually hired an English immigrant named Sam German, who later figured out a way to add sugar to the chocolate before selling the chocolate blocks. Mr. Baker liked it so much that he added Sam's name to the product, making it Baker's German's Chocolate. This was in the 1850s. Now jump ahead more than a century. In 1957 a Dallas housewife published a recipe she created for German's Chocolate Cake in the local newspaper and the rest is history. So the cake's invention was quite recent. BTW this cake looks delicious. I love that the sides are frosted too, as I miss that on the traditional version.
Yes that’s the deeper side to the story. My point was to at least let folks know that it isn’t a Germany dessert and it originated in the U.S. I just mentioned it in my latest video👌🏽
Thank so much for sharing this receipe. My mom made this cake only once a year for Christmas and I loved it. When she pass I wanted to keep her tradition going but I struggle with this cake every year. I am going to try your recipe this year you made it look so easy. Thanks again!
My favorite cake. I grew up in the Dallas area, and I recently found out we lived about 5 miles from the lady who first formulated this recipe. (We lived in Mesquite, she lived in Pleasant Grove/Urbandale).
Mrs. Carolyn, Mrs. Carolyn I am so please to have found your channel. The first time I made this cake it was horrible and my niece nickname it "dirt cake". This time I ace it and my co workers and boyfriend LOVE IT. So kudos to me and you. Thank you so much.
I love the step by step detail you give in this video. The reasons for the steps is gold. I will be trying this recipe soon, because mostly of your reviews. People have actually tried your recipe and have testified it is awesome. Thank you for sharing Queen!

CAROLYN CAROLYN! I want to thank you so much for uploading this video. My friends grandmother use to make this cake every Christmas until she got ill. I've done box German chocolate cake, but they never had the same flavor or texture of the scratch version. However years later you come into my life, with this perfect step by step recipe. My 16 year old daughter and myself took a stab at it for the Christmas holiday. We made 2 and they both were BIG HITS!! Very moist... Reminded me so much of what I've been missing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent! Happy Holidays!
Thank you so much for your directions and telling it like it is!! I was able to make my first one for my daughter in law who lost her mother and made the comment how she missed her mama's homemade german chocolate cake for her birthday. It took me five hours, but I do it!!!! It turned out beautiful and the directions on putting that icing on the side worked perfect. I just stuck it in there!!! Again thank you so much.
