  • Welcome Back to Spearfactor! Our guest today is Matt Bond. Matt is here to share with us the details of California fishing politics specifically the fights against Nonprofit conservation groups wanting to grow the MPA to 30% of the coastline. Matt shares the process of dealing with the California Fish & Game Commission, and how to be a voice to protect both our rights to harvest food and the environment that we all love. We also discuss the good and bad about current efforts in our waters and a call to action for fishermen. Matt works closely with the environmental advocates at All Waters to be a voice for our local outdoor sportsman. To get involved, check out All Waters website www.allwaters.org

Listening to this gives me zero hope. I appreciate the fact he’s advocating for the voiceless. But we need to understand the actual problems before we ever get anywhere. I do t understand why people can’t extrapolate our everyday government to fish and game! We don’t send billions of dollars to Israel because it’s the right thing, we do it because of special interests. Everything that happens to our fishery is through special interests. Everything. Nobody actually cares about the fish! Why can’t we just get to the truth? Let me put it another way, if I knew nothing about CA fishery regulations, whats would I guess is probably going on based on other governments entities? I’d guess they’d want more and more regulation and to continue making fees more expensive and more confusing… in other words, discouraging people from fishing. I personally can’t believe I even need to say this to people who are extremely involved, but what entity on earth that has money, power and influence wants people fishing? None of them. Nobody wants people to fish. It’s a Healthy food source, which keeps people out of grocery stores and hospitals, makes it so they need fewer pharma pills. Any large powerful corporation you can think of would not want us to fish. Anyway tough to get points across on a RUclips post. I just strongly believe, step #1, you realize the truth: none of these people care about fish or the ocean. No they are not sincere. The reason I think a lot of people get convinced there are sincere people who advocate for ocean preservation is there are people who are sincere, but…. Huge but…. Not the people at the top. Not the actual decision makers. None of them actually have the conservation of the ocean or fish as their actual objective. This is all just them getting ahead of the fact that people want control of the food sources in the coming decades. What do you think is gonna happen if they make meat and other staples a lot more unaffordable? More people are going to be forced to go fishing often! I see these regulations as them getting ahead of that trend that is obviously coming.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I agree with everything you said. Looking at history, the US gov did the same thing to the native Americans, rationing out their meat. It’s a way to control. You’re right we can’t stop them. But maybe we can at least slow them down enough so our kids can still enjoy the ocean fishing while it’s still in a good state. One way to do that is to expose the truths (motivations and impacts) behind these agendas. Most of the people in the fight, I think are misinformed and do care about producing the best ocean environment possible. Unfortunately their plan involves come completely eliminating human factors aka fishing, shoreline access. The problem is, is that these factors don’t actually have that big of an impact on overall ocean health. The real impact is coming from bigger more powerful organizations, so they start with the disenfranchised, us. Hopefully by presenting good arguments and forcing them to think they will wise up to the fact that there is better ways to tackle problems than going after the little man. I could go on and on and on about all this stuff and how I feel when it comes to politics in the state and the people that vote for the same people that are determined to take away your rights saying that they’re fighting for at the same time. Anyways, I do understand where you’re coming from. It’s just a shame that I think and someways you are right but maybe the best we can hope for is too slow this process down through exposure.

@@SpearFactor it says right in the California constitution that citizens have the right to fish public waterways. I’m not a legal expert but that seems pretty clear to me. I don’t understand how a citizen would not win a court case if he’s prosecuted for fishing waters near his home. Maybe that’s what it will come down to one day. There’s a story in the news now of a surfer who got arrested in New Jersey because he wasn’t wearing his “beach pass”, which they charge money form. I’ve always viewed stocked lakes as potentially fair game to charge for fishing licenses. But the ocean it’s a stretch to change for fishing licenses. Anyway I’m all over the place. I guess this topic gets people emotional. I’m the same age as your guest and fished the oc coast in the 80s and 90s.man I didn’t ever know how lucky I was. I was never as serious as him though, but those were the days. I don’t think I ever, not even one time, saw another spearfisherman.
