This looks like a real, inside-the-art tip Daniel. As with many things in life, it's attention to detail that make all the difference. Thanks for sharing your hard won-knowledge Sensei Mann.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in this video! I am just getting into spearfishing at 40ish years old and can't wait to start tinkering with my gear!
Good as always. It’s interesting that in the 50’s and 60’s all spears had 2 floppers, sometimes on the shaft and sometimes paired on a screw on head . These were useless as they were heavy and often spun off a gyrating fish. Some of us favoured custom made long pranger heads. These were very effective on quite large fish provided you hit the lateral line or head. Keep up the good work I look forward to seeing your new videos
Thank you so much again!!!! So i i did the lock open technique and saved my 17 kilogram leerfish from escape!!!! Excelent and very useful. And with one floper!!!! Farewell from Mayorca
It is allways nice to see how the speros act and prepare their gear around the world. The square gide for holding your spear is a very clever hack! Here I n Mediterranean this kind of spears with distance between the floppers are not very popular. Instead we prefer double floppers but at the same pin.
Love all these tinkering vids. My OCD is absolutely STOCKED with this knowledge on perfecting the equipment . Thanks Daniel, can't wait for the sun to rise so the hammering starts !
Being a newbie I had no idea about the complexities of the flopper....after watching the vid i ran over to my cressi speargun to compare my spear...wow! Cressi have given me a perfect flopper on my spear...its even pointed at the end and smooth on the backside...opens smoothly and locks perfectly😊👍
@@DanielMann well ..They have been around since 1946 ..I think I got lucky...I did some research but not extensive...will soon find out for sure when I get into the water😊👍
Can't believe the timing of this vid! I just lost a PB pollock while diving with @thefrenchmanltd due to my dodgy flopper. I was asking after pliers on the boat but as per your advise that wouldn't have saved the day - I'm glad he didn't have any on the boat. Yet another great vid fella, thanks.
Well I was the 150th person to view this i hoped of to have a shower. I hoped back on and now your at 2,079 views. Great job Daniel really good job of explaining how to do things in this vid and great to see your channel growing really earned it
Thank you Daniel for being so descriptive and taking your time on these tutorials! They are a HUGE help! Idk why 4 of these trolls thumbs downed it. Just know that these tutorials have saved me a lot of time and stress searching through forms for answers.
Dude you’re so well spoken and have clear concise informative direction of information pertaining spearfishing ! Thanks for the super clear video quality also kudos mate
I hav to say in all the 1000’s of spearing vids I’ve watched, this is one of the best, I always hav trouble with floppers, but of course who has the money to just buy new spears all the time, well dine👌
Just binging through all your videos while this shitty atlantic winter weather keeps us out of the water! Gonna give it a check on all my floppers after this one!
100 percent on the money Daniel....also really pedantic(read obsessed) with flopper(barb) setup....exactly how I set mine up. Awesome guys take note here really good advice!
Your channel is the best ever for learning about spearfishing...one of the most important things I have learnt is the one minite down ..3 minites up...I had no idea that potential blacking out was even a possibility😨...pheww...lucky I watched that vid..Thanks😊👍
Hopefully after i get my EMT licences i can really start saving money, and begin spear fishing. The only thing is i live three hours away from the ocean, but i'll most definitely use this video when those days come.
Very Informative and detailed! This Man is a Legend! I have learned so much simply by watching your Video's and it has helped me to become a much better spearo.
Thanks Dan, need to do my flopper. Was shooting really accurate then changed shaft and went from single 16 rubber to twin 14s and different shaft and I'm shooting high
My own tip to never let flopper pass closed through fish is to point the end tip of the flopper upwards from the shaft (raise it above the shaft, 2mm are enough). This way even if the flopper is in closed position it will open either on fish scales or internals. Also if you fish close to rocks and caves, fish that tend to hug the walls like groupers, flopper should be as close as possible to spear tip. This allows the flopper to open, as the distance between the rock and fish is very little.
i have a similar story. when i was a biginner, i was at an offshore reef spearfishing with my experienced brother. he pointed out these 3 folden trevalley, and the biggest one would have almost been a metre long. i dove into line with them and put a shot into the biggest one. the spear went bullseyeinto the centre of the fish and 40cm through the fish, but the flopper didn't open, just sat there, and the fish bolted off with nothing at all holding it back
Been making my own floppers for a while since im broke and you cant find these kind of stuff here. you simply go to the local store where they sell kitchen supplies and look for stainless steel "utensils" the cheapest stuff you can find. the handles are shaped like a flopper and you simple cut the handle off and squeeze it against the spear then mount the "flopper" and spear togheter in the vise and drill them all at once so the holes line up. no need to mind the thickness of your spear since it will shape itself after the spear when you squeeze it in the vise. You take a cutter and cutout a lil slot in the top so it can fold out properly. floppers for 0.1-0.2 dollar each. And to everyone... get a drillpress best investment in your life if you ever gonna make something yourself. even the 80-100 dollar once makes your life so much easier.
Please please please make a video on the different types of shaft materials available on a speargun. It is very essential to know the different materials and their durability as well as strengths. Not to forget their specific uses. There is not a single video on the entire RUclips platform mentioning the various types steels that are used for shafts available in the market.
Man I rememeber buying prangers from you off spearoz years and years ago!!! haha still plugging away. Got any inspiration for straightening a slightly bent spear?
We're all allowed a man crush right?! Binge watched all your vids and absolutely love every single one of them! Thanks for being so inspirational even to us useless noobs
Another ripper vid! Some gems in this one! Ive been meaning to get a jig made for some time. Do you just centre the square bar in a 4 jaw chuck for the spear hole and then just very carefully mark and drill the perpendicular pin hole? Theres no room for error on small stuff like this! I'd like to make a similar jig for drilling barrels(handle and muzzle pin holes)
That’s basically what I did. Use the four jaw chuck and turn the ends flush, then drill the centre hole, mark with a scribe and set square the top. I also have hardened silver steel inserts in the top of the jig for the drill bit guides.
Thanks for sharing your experience with me I'm someone who really likes diving but can't really go deep water diving like what you're doing. Sorry I'm Charley and I'm from Vanuatu a little dotted island in the Pacific Ocean near Solomon islands, it would be great to learn to dive with you.
Very enlightening video Daniel! Thorough explanation on how to do it right! Check Devoto floppers. They only need some smoothing. P.S.: I use pliers for making the flopper to lock, but not in the way you use them! ;-)

I heard at a biker party one night that a 'flopper' was really a chopped BMW bike. (With the old boxer engine). Slightly more reliable than a Harley, maybe, but nowhere as much 'Earth-shake'.
Super cool video the more i get into spearguns the more technical and picky i am becoming also LoL but I still dont understand how going through the fish pops the flopper open?

Wouldn't mind seeing you do a Intro to spearfishing series, going over the basics never hurts

For those without a metal lathe to make a holding jig. You can use a block of wood. For the set screw drill a hole and epoxy a nut in it.
Good as always. Hows about a follow up on how to sharpen the spear and to keep the correct profile of the spear tip.

Great video ! The jig is a nice tool. I would add some cutting oil when drilling.
It tends to clog up the flutes of the drill in the jig so I don’t use any cutting oils.
