Yeah the first TVP version definitely has different attachment methods for the front and rear simply because it's not a monocoque construction. In general though they're pretty similar.
Shame no mentioned of the Raiders bigger, the Raider XL (1/8th version). I have the BLX version of the XL. It drives great IMO, one of my favourite go-to bashers. Runs on 2S or 3S. Although in reality 2S is plenty for most places.
@DoRC fun fact....the same reason this buggy went discontinued is the same reason the vaterra glamis uno went out. Jason from Arma, and John from hpi won't tell the details about it though.
@DoRC yep I used to be buddies with John, but he never wanted to talk about the hpi situation. It was a huge mess. Now hpi tryna go all top shelf prices on antiquated models.
I was trying to find a raider XL on ebay and got one of these 1/10th scale ones and i made it 3s brushless and had to use a 3s airplane battery to fit the tray lol.i like these vids they gave me alot of cool info and stuff i never knew before.its so wild to me that almost every single part for all the raiders is on ebay but i cant really find a complete ir mostly complete XL model.i dont care if its the mega brushed one lol i can make it fast.
Yeah it is weird that the XL is less available. I guess they made more of the smaller ones or people just didn't bash the smaller ones as much. Glad you've enjoyed :-)
The BBX is probably Tamiya’s best ever RC car. I considered buying one and opted against it only because I have too much stuff. Nothing wrong with the car. Tamiya had the best-looking models back in the day (like Thundershot, Terra Scorcher…) but the BBX also performs well enough for driving on a track. It’s by no means a race buggy (esp. against modern vehicles) but seems like a good driver.
@@DoRCthat’s hell of a find 👍🏻. It’s in pretty good condition too. Well,, until you broke it 😂. Also horizon hobby uk has been gone since brexit. If Jason is running HHUK the website still isn’t available to us. Is there a new website or something?
To be fair patents usually are separated out by industry so The concept existing in electrical industry wouldn't necessarily prevent traxxas from patenting it but from what I've heard the same design already existed in the RC hobby as well
Man. I started with RC cars, went through granite 3s, to kraton 4s to BigRock 6s to a 140mph Limitless. Now I'm onto EDF jets like the 70mm F-35 and 80mm Rafale. Now I'm looking at turbines. I think I need to go see a therapist.
I have the original raider with the metal rail, wheels and atx 100 controller it’s sat in my shed doing nothing as I’ve moved onto 4,6,and 8s rigs are they worth anything lol
@@DoRC Thanks for the reply dude, It’s not in bad condition, no box which I guess makes a big difference and it’s not been used in a long while so could probably do with new bearings.and I’d prolly put it on eBay and if at least 2 people see it then want to start a bidding war then I’m more than okay with that 😂
@@DoRCI'm the one screaming for a 5th scale Typhon. I'd take a 1/5 basher buggy from anyone. I'd even buy another Traxxass if they built it first. As long as it's 1/5 scale, 4x4, and electric. 8s minimum please and thank you. I'd prefer it was Redcat or Arrma but beggars can't be picky.
@@DoRC just wish traxxas would atleast innovate, y'know? like if they're going to charge a lot of money for a copy/paste car they should at least make new designs (last one was sledge i think).
Well if the infamous Jason is watching your video, maybe he should look into the European branch of Horizon cause it is not the best in the market ( and I am referring to the rest of Europe not UK ). Apart from awaiting for new releases to arrive, and feeling stooopid for the difference even in the discounts between Europe and USA not to mention the fact that they change their rigs every 2-3 years maximum, there is always the lack of spare parts from ARRMA, and don't get me started about LOSI. So since these problems are keeping the company from expanding in a proper manner, I believe that the least of the company's problems nowadays is the competition with Traxxas and I am not a fan, but they have a bigger part of the pie, even in my country .... oh and they have plenty of spare parts that are actually available !!!!!! I personally would like to get my hands on an ARRMA but the company it shelf makes it way to hard. So in order to cut a long story short, just tell Jason to call me 🤣 !!!! Great video and as always with additional information .
Yeah it is really interesting to hear about how different brands are in various regions of the world. Over here it's pretty much horizon and Traxxas and then everyone else but like you said over there Horizon doesn't seem to put nearly as much effort in
Unfortunately patent law is very complicated and sometimes it's not the first person to do something it's the first person to patent it that gets the right. I'm not sure if Traxxas should have gotten That patent but they did unfortunately.
@@DoRC It was a 1/10 scale RWD plastic chassis buggy with black plastic shock bodies with red caps just like this car! Traxxas would have sued for sure.
Perfect video at the perfect time.! 👌 👌 👍 👍 HECK YES I want a new version of the Raider, on the 330mm SC chassis too.!! I'd buy that as soon as I could.!! Love your channel. I have one of the original Granite 2wd based on that same platform using The original Tactic remote. At some point I replaced the shocks which always leaked, the weak servo and upgraded to a brushless system. Still runs great. Only thing I've had to tell over the years is the spur gear. Needs a new body as the inside is being held together with duct tape but other more modern vehicles seem to take priority.
how did Traxxis have pattent on that RX box i know for FACT people making home made boxes like that back in the 80's there HAS to be prior art out there. id add the idea of an water proof box for hold some device with wires and gasket like has have been around since the 70's in fact i swore there been boxes like on some old Tamiya stuff
Patent laws are strange and often even if someone shouldn't be able to get a patent on something from a moral standpoint they still can from a legal standpoint.
@@Elios0000 sort of. Prior art is a pretty complex part of patent law and it's definitions not only have changed multiple times but are also in kind of a constant state of flux. I don't claim to know everything about it but I don't think it's quite as simple as that.
I kinda wonder if this Raider is the remake of the red and white one that to be fair if my memory serves me correctly, was not Arrma made, it was a buggy but the body was a little different, it to was brushed, brushless was just starting to come into the scene, a brushless speed controller and motor would cost over 600$ talk about time have changed, now you can get the same stuff for less than 100$ if you're savvy or find a bad rc with a esc and motor that works. I was wondering if this pre Arrma days buggy is what became their Raider? Not a lot of clues here, and I know I am relying on memory, but it was in the late 80's and Early 90's to mid 90's after that I don't recall seeing it anymore. So I had to buy another brand nope not Traxxas, there was another before their rule.
@@bradkalman2353 Yeah I think the Fury chassis would be best. I was just calling all of those the Gorgon platform cuz it's the first one that came out on that chassis.
@DoRC because it pushed them to actually make there cars better imo. Take the gorgan. It's done really well. Why do you think traxxas is chosing to update there cars now? I believe it's because they don't want to be left behind. I have my own opinions of arrma but I can't deny there impact on the hobby. Practically every other rc manufacturer is watching them.
@@DoRCas a massive traxxas fan, I champion arrma. Keep going! Keep traxxas on there toes! Make it so they can't just rest on there laurels! The groms make the tetons look old and outdated, traxxas will probably fix that or at least look at that. The mini maxx is a thing to put a name brand behind all of these generic 1/16 /1/14 scale cars that come from China. It's gotten them to pay attention to the world around them. I believe arrma scared the hell out of traxxas when they came back better. And now it's forcing them to acknowledge them
@@Boltboy-kh7yw Yeah I definitely agree. Any competition is good. I don't think there's enough in the hobby right now though it is nice to see companies like KC and redcat bringing things out that do seriously compete with Traxxas and Arrma.
@@Boltboy-kh7yw Well they've already addressed it apparently. I think the mini Max is going to be there answer to the Groms and to be honest I think it's going to be superior though more expensive. A lot of people didn't want to buy a Grom because it was too small and underpowered. I think the minimax is going to address both those things
Ah the raider...overweight, low quality plastics, a front bulkhead that liked to break, a battery door thar liked to get stuck....it looked cool and drove ok but there were far better buggy options to choose from.
My Arrmas have always been great out of the box, Traxxas in the last ten years has been hit and miss with crap servos and ESC’s lights of death. Traxxas will fix it for an additional 70 dollars lol which is the warranty. Traxxas parts tend to wear out faster than Arrma, although the water resistance is better in traxxas. Both have their plus and minus’s. Maybe if traxxas fired some administrators they could lower the prices and hire more RnD staff. Arrma could do with making better diffs. I don’t get the lawsuits, capitalism is supposed to be a free market that drives innovation and consumer choice. If someone copies your product then you make a better one. At least that’s the lie we learned we are supposed to have. Lawsuits should be banned when it comes to corporations targeting others.
Ehh. I'd have to disagree with that. After having driven this car and the Gorgon platform nearly back to back I would say the modern platform is superior in pretty much every way. It handles better, is more versatile and is far easier to work on.
lets dont forget that traxxas stole the new slash body design and hurt a small company that made those. but also traxxas still sue every single company for the smallest things
Usually a Kush drive is used in conjunction with a slipper clutch. The cush drive is good for smoothing out quick shock loads but it doesn't actually reduce the total amount of energy being transferred. A slipper clutch by its nature will actually reduce the energy transfer so kind of performs a different function.
@@Johnny6ex Yeah that's one of the big downsides to slipper clutches. They have a sweet spot and that sweet spot changes with a lot of different variables.
Did you really just put that diff and rear end back together without cleaning any of it and putting fresh grease in it..? Eww... That's... a sin... to the hobby gods... Also. EFF YOU CEE KAY Traxxas... I have a trx4 and I will NEVER purchase another traxxas product again... I thought they were supposed to be "The BEST name in RC" or some crap like that but all I got was a year of headaches and weeks at a time of having to wait until I could buy replacement parts for whatever broke that week... First it was the shift servo. Then one of the diff lock servos. Then the steering. Then my battery puffed up after not even 6 months of ownership. Then the other diff lock servo. Then the receiver. Then the esc. Then the motor. It's literally had every single electric part in it replaced out of necessity. Not desire to upgrade... It's disgusting... THEY should be sued into oblivion instead of them suing everyone else all the time.
You wanna know real pain? Get your hands on the original and get to the servo. 26 screws. And you really don’t have a good way of making sure the steering is centered before putting it together
@@DoRC oh yea, I’ve done the mess of getting to the rear diff many times with all the broken plastic gears and the diff shims in the v1 gearbox cupping very often. It was weird, they put a shim between the seal and the pin inside the diff, but I’ve yet to see anyone else do that, or at least have those shims cup regularly
@@dylanwhite6539 ah. Yeah I might not have been strong enough for the higher power brushless system. Seems to hold up pretty good with this BLS system though
Eh. Back in 2009 lipos were really just beginning to become the norm and they still were following The dimensions of the old nickel metal hydride batteries. It would be a few more years until they were really available in all sorts of different sizes.
@@DoRC I certainly don’t remember it that way. When URC did his original video that was the main gripe. And to be fair that v2 battery box is actually better than the first one.
@@DoRC I will agree that nimh was a lot more normal than lipos were, but even still I was fully switched over to them by the time this came out. And they were rather cheap too. Maybe $35 for a 2s 5000mAh. But these days you can get a two pack of 2s lipos for that.
Eh. The bandit was far from the first RC buggy to be created and other than them both being two-wheel drive buggies this doesn't really share a lot with that platform.
@@acecapone8086 most two wheel drive buggies look alike but if you look a little closer you'll see that other than the basic shape which again most buggies share you'll see that they are completely different from each other.
You need to get your eyes checked if you think this thing took any inspiration from the Bandit. They both share the basic rear motor 2WD buggy architecture that had been the norm for ten years before the Bandit was released. The number of innovations Traxxas put into the Bandit is pretty much zero. The Raider has a completely different chassis design and nothing that goes on around the chassis looks like the Bandit specifically.

It's not that the car commercials look like they're from the '80s it's just that our memories are usually shifted by about 20 or 30 years :-)
Shame no mentioned of the Raiders bigger, the Raider XL (1/8th version). I have the BLX version of the XL. It drives great IMO, one of my favourite go-to bashers. Runs on 2S or 3S. Although in reality 2S is plenty for most places.
Yeah it was actually on my list of notes but I stopped recording right before it and started recording again forgetting to mention it.
I really really want to see a new Arrma Raider style Buggy. The cheaper price point and something that doesn't look like the Typhon.
Stay tuned :-)
Awesome a long video i really enjoyed it 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it I enjoyed making it!
My friend searched high and low for the XL version of this buggy and finally bought it this year.
Nice! I owned an XL when they first came out but I kind of want another one.
@DoRC fun fact....the same reason this buggy went discontinued is the same reason the vaterra glamis uno went out. Jason from Arma, and John from hpi won't tell the details about it though.
@@thatoneguy2756 interesting. I did find it more than coincidental that the first Arrmas had TVPs
@DoRC yep I used to be buddies with John, but he never wanted to talk about the hpi situation. It was a huge mess. Now hpi tryna go all top shelf prices on antiquated models.
Im still running a v1 kraton. I also have a nero with the diff brain in it i love it
Nice I have a video on that truck too!
Traxxas didn't want that smoke with a company with pockets just as deep as theirs!😅😂
Yeah they do seem to like going after the little guy.
I wonder if they still make those tires from the 2015 Kraton video.
Took a quick look and it does not look like it.
Fantastic video your the king!
Thanks man Glad you enjoyed :-)
Looks like the Tamiya BBX😂
I've planning on getting that, but I keep changing my mind
I need to get one of the more modern tamiyas. It's been a while since I built one
It’s by no means a race buggy (esp. against modern vehicles) but seems like a good driver.
still rips, love it 😎👍👍👌
Yeah I was actually pretty impressed with how durable it still is. I know it's not that old but stuff gets brittle
I'm actually planning to find one of these on eBay to (hopefully) tune it up and race it on carpet. :)
They are definitely out there though The price has gone up recently :)
✌🏻😎🏴Where the 🤬 did you get a Raider?
I’m hoping the raiders will make a comeback on the Gorgon chassis.
I found it on eBay about 6 months ago
@@DoRCthat’s hell of a find 👍🏻. It’s in pretty good condition too. Well,, until you broke it 😂.

@@THEMASKEDMASTER oh I'm not sure. I was just going off of his own LinkedIn page. It is possible that it's not up to date.
Traxxas invented sealed containers that allow wires to pass through 😂. I guess they showed the whole electrical industry a thing or two 🤣
To be fair patents usually are separated out by industry so The concept existing in electrical industry wouldn't necessarily prevent traxxas from patenting it but from what I've heard the same design already existed in the RC hobby as well
I have a green and black and a red and blue both are brushed platforms and live on a shelf they are awesome though when I did run them
Nice! I'm actually surprised that parts are still available for them.
I'd love a full on buggy again.
Did you see the video where I converted the new Fury into a buggy?
Would luv to see a 70's/80s style dune racer
Man. I started with RC cars, went through granite 3s, to kraton 4s to BigRock 6s to a 140mph Limitless. Now I'm onto EDF jets like the 70mm F-35 and 80mm Rafale. Now I'm looking at turbines. I think I need to go see a therapist.
Some people see rc as therapy!
I have the original raider with the metal rail, wheels and atx 100 controller it’s sat in my shed doing nothing as I’ve moved onto 4,6,and 8s rigs are they worth anything lol
I would say it depends on the condition. They certainly aren't worthless but you have to find the right buyer for it.
@@DoRC Thanks for the reply dude, It’s not in bad condition, no box which I guess makes a big difference and it’s not been used in a long while so could probably do with new bearings.and I’d prolly put it on eBay and if at least 2 people see it then want to start a bidding war then I’m more than okay with that 😂
@@lyricalcoma1979 Yeah give it a try. At the very least someone who will enjoy it can get it.
I want them to make a 1/5 raider
That would be awesome. Would you be okay if it was four-wheel drive?

UDR is really fun but they aren’t tough at all don’t bash it unless you plan on some heavy upgrades

@@lockedrockwotb Yeah they don't come out with new designs very often. The new minimax should be a new platform though!
Over here it's pretty much horizon and Traxxas and then everyone else but like you said over there Horizon doesn't seem to put nearly as much effort in
I have the red and gold one. Mines brushed.
Nice! I'm really glad we can still get parts for these.
Hey, I thought tamiya was the first to do laydown shocks so why did Traxxas sue Arrma
Unfortunately patent law is very complicated and sometimes it's not the first person to do something it's the first person to patent it that gets the right. I'm not sure if Traxxas should have gotten That patent but they did unfortunately.
If Kyosho was like Traxxas, this car would have been named something else.
Interesting. I didn't know they had a raider. I'm kind of surprised Arrma used that name.
@@DoRC It was a 1/10 scale RWD plastic chassis buggy with black plastic shock bodies with red caps just like this car! Traxxas would have sued for sure.
@@toolbaggers Yeah I looked it up. Definitely similar
Traxxas is a bully. They go after rc youtube channels, for crying out loud.

One mistake, that is a second generation raider, the original had a two piece chassis held together with the TVP's.
Good catch. I do mention it in the video but might not have been specific enough
They should really bring back the ADX-10
Was that basically a race version of the raider?
@@DoRC yep. Though “race” is a pretty lose term. Just tires and body shell.

I'd also love Arrma to make a 4S Felony on the Mojave 4S platform... I'd buy that one whether I could or not, I'd find a way.! 😉 😉

Nice! It's fun to run these old cars :-)
how did Traxxis have pattent on that RX box i know for FACT people making home made boxes like that back in the 80's there HAS to be prior art out there. id add the idea of an water proof box for hold some device with wires and gasket like has have been around since the 70's in fact i swore there been boxes like on some old Tamiya stuff
Patent laws are strange and often even if someone shouldn't be able to get a patent on something from a moral standpoint they still can from a legal standpoint.
@@DoRC Prior Art is a thing if any one can prove there a box like that BEFORE the patent was filed it make the patent invalid
Apparently the original was made by kyosho. It was also called the raider but I don't think they have anything in common other than that
@@DoRC thanks, believe it or not I have had that in the back of my brain for awhile making it itchy lol 😅😆😅

Arrma is the best thing that happened to Traxxas in the last 15 yrs or so ;)
How so
@DoRC because it pushed them to actually make there cars better imo.
Yeah but for a first try from a new company I think it was pretty good.
Yeah I think Traxxas big problem these days is their pricing. They seem to have priced themselves right out of most categories in the hobby.
Past HPI and Arrma 2wd’s > Modern HPI and Arrma 2wd designs
Ehh. I'd have to disagree with that. After having driven this car and the Gorgon platform nearly back to back I would say the modern platform is superior in pretty much every way. It handles better, is more versatile and is far easier to work on.
Dude, this isn't a new car, is it? 15:40
It wasn't quite brand new but pretty close. Got to see how it runs though!
lets dont forget that traxxas stole the new slash body design and hurt a small company that made those. but also traxxas still sue every single company for the smallest things
Yeah I got a whole video on that. Check out my Nero video.
Lol still have one of those
Definitely a fun buggy!
Why sliper clutch how you get power to wheels and wldnt cush drive be beter
Usually a Kush drive is used in conjunction with a slipper clutch. The cush drive is good for smoothing out quick shock loads but it doesn't actually reduce the total amount of energy being transferred. A slipper clutch by its nature will actually reduce the energy transfer so kind of performs a different function.
@DoRC ye but its fineqi i jst lock it then it gets loose and no full power
@@Johnny6ex Yeah that's one of the big downsides to slipper clutches. They have a sweet spot and that sweet spot changes with a lot of different variables.
Dude, this isn't a new car, is it?
Pretty close but not quite.

Hey that's not old grease. That is vintage factory correct grease. To change it out would be sacrilegious at this point :-)

😂😂😂😂
You wanna know real pain? Get your hands on the original and get to the servo. 26 screws. And you really don’t have a good way of making sure the steering is centered before putting it together
Sounds like they definitely made the servo easier to get to on this updated version! Still pretty crazy about the rear differential though.
