ohh i loved this !! i do remember hearing this story as a child now (but with a golden whale instead of a flaunder??), and the way it ended wasn't just that one day the wife wanted to be a god and everything was returned to normal, but that one day she insisted to eat the fish for dinner, and as the fisherman killed the fish all returned to as it had been before the wishes, all the riches vanished - anyone else remember this, is this a different fairy tale, or did i completely make that up?
I remember hearing a story like this when I was younger. But what about the fish prince? He's still a fish. Could we find a fairytale that's about a fish revealing and turning into a prince? That would make the perfect sequel 😁😁
Probably one of the most famous tales about the dangers of hubris and greed. Not only does it show the constant estrangement between the couple, but also the destructive influence on their surroundings. Or, depending how you read it, nature's anger about the coninuous abuse of the fish and husband.
First time I heard this story, and every time since then, I wonder if now it's the wife's job to grant wishes until the wisher gets too greedy? Or maybe the fisherman, since he's done all her dirty work anyway. "Don't hurt me, once I was the Pope ... 's husband ... and now I'm just a lowly fisherman. Please don't ask questions, is there something I can do for you?"
I remember watching the show on HBO for kids where they would like have cartoon fairy tales, but I distinctly remember the episode where they did the fisherman and his wife. But their ending was his last request to the fish was that his wife was just happy like that's all he ever wanted was for her to be happy and the fish told him to go it's done and they're back at the hut only she's happy to be there and I remember thinking that was so cute
@Yesenia P... Yup, the ending you mention would give the tale a happy note to finish on. The ending in this version makes the moral starker. (Reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode in which each wish a shop owner makes of a genie has a catch, and in the end the couple end up no better than they started.) Greed takes different forms. The fisherman's wife has an insatiable power fetish. In the 1999 movie of Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband" (awesome cast of Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver, Rupert Everett, Julianne Moore, Jeremy Northam, Rupert Everett, Julianne Moore, *well worth watching for the humor, wisdom, script and spot on acting [as you can tell I loved it]) there's an insightful moment in which Jeremy Northam recalls his conversation with the Baron who told him that the ultimate thing some people are after is >power
I instantly thought about changing titles in Fable when you mentioned the town crier. 😂 it was exciting to hear you also mention Fable (and hearing you talk about Skyrim).
I kinda feel at some point he just shoulda asked the fish 2 make his wife happy & content... or maybe go super crazy & 2 thank the fish wish him back in2 a prince.
Oh, man of the sea, come listen to me, for Alice my wife, the bane of my life, has sent me to beg a boon of thee... I had this story in a collection of children's literature when I was a kid. Wonder if that book is still in print.
I mean, you respect the ambition but is it really ambitious when she expects to have it just given to her for nothing and on a silver platter? Definitely wasn't cheering or rooting for her or her wishes. 💀
@The Big Dawg... The sea's almost stormy when the fisherman comes the last time, and after he makes the request for the wife, they lose all the gains. Being Emperor, then Pope, wasn't enough (the wife had beyond ample material *and spiritual power). She now wanted to be a god (or did she want to be the God? It matters not. The ending's the same.) So after the fisherman makes the request, she and he end up just as they started...in the little hut.
It sounds like the fishes patience was beginning to flounder.
HAHHAHAHAHHHAHAH
You have such an enchanting voice
You had me cracking up with the abomination of many servants all moving as a mass of flesh, very eldritch
LOL

That cottage sounded nice🐟🏡🐟
I am so happy she is dirt poor again!
Also the wishing powers are not done is a power statement
Your stories help me pass the time while I wait for my husband to come home from overseas

OH MY GOSH! THIS STORY BEINGS BACK SO MUCH NOSTALGIA TO ME! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
What an ambitious lady!
I'm honestly just too annoyed with the fisherman. Has this man never heard of the word "no"?
He probably wanted his wife to be happy, or he was afraid to say no.
This is always one of my favorite fairy tales 💫💫
The poor guy just wanted a quiet life of fishing, but his wife just ruined it all. He really must love her
The commentary sprinkled in has me cackling in my truck. 😂

You are to cute!! I love that you add so much to the stories. I am so happy I found your channels.
@meagaru the watcher... Double Ditto and 👍👍! Yes, perceptive and brief comments-often witty too! They give the story a personal feel.
YAAAYYY!!! The Fisherman and his Wife! One of my all time favorite stories! Awesome video!

Your stories give me hope..... love the sweater btw!
Nice story just finished it i heard your new mother story last night even though I was late
I kinda feel at some point he just shoulda asked the fish 2 make his wife happy & content... or maybe go super crazy & 2 thank the fish wish him back in2 a prince.
I Wonder how she is soo immune to imposter-syndrom 🤔🙈😂
I like the axe man and the sparrow. It's short but it's very funny, in the way that only old german stories can be.

I love that one!
Wow your voice is beautiful ❤️
@MinedLettuce175... Yes, an exceptional, lovely voice-perfect for ASMR.... and for gently removing stresses of the day.

From the name I thought it'd be Pushkin, but it isn't, well 💔
Please please teacher can you help me about English reading 🥺
You wanna talk about power?
Learn the value of a dollar.
I love the rhyme

It's your voice that makes the ending confusing. I tried replaying it three times and can't understand what happens after "she wishes to be a god".
