When I started working at a Center in 1989, we had the same communication switches with the red lights, as shown in this film, lol.
Whenever I watch these kinds of old films, I wish I could turn back time to those days.
This was great. I started in 1971 when we were just beginning to come out of the dark ages. I used a lot of the equipment shown on this video. It brings back good memories. Thanks!
I hired on 1960 CID fss, then ICT rapcon, ZKC 1970, retired 1988. Great story, brings back many great memories
To any air traffic controllers reading this - thank you!
Even back then flights from ORD to LAX took off on Runway 32 at Tango 10 -- some things never change.
I wish you could still fly from Chicago-Meigs Field to KORD, land on a ramp and walk to a gate with no security. Back in the days when people still "dressed" to fly. Nice Eastern Air Lines ELECTRA in the old livery in the background.
Omg, what a beauty!! Great!! Is there more something similar!?! Really love it!!
I last saw this movie in April, 1968, in the first week of Flight Data School at ZJX (Jacksonville ARTCC). Little did I know then that, ten years after this film was produced, I would wind up working in the two principal facilities featured in this film (ORD and ZAU--Chicago ARTCC). Things hadn't changed much from '63 to '68--I'm a veteran of shrimp boats, PPI radar (at ORD), scan converted radar, and those CAA transmitter select switches on the overheads (all the way into the late '80s).
My dad told me all about the "hoppy" scopes and shrimp boats he used to use at ZAU and Kansas City ARTCC. When he worked in STL, he used to let me job shadow him occasionally on Midwatches, because I was looking at ATC as a possible career. They actually had a hoppy scope in the STL TRACON, but hardly ever used it. One of the main things he taught me, which I never will forget was decoding the hourly weather observations, which came over the Teleautograph. I have an app on my phone which has them.
"taxi into position and hold" i miss those words
13:18 we had that same console into the 90's, better radar screen but we had the same black pushbuttons under the guy's right hand that was our interphone system.
It was nice seeing the place where I work 14 yrs before I was born! Pretty funny!
and from all of us who love aviation to the Airboyds out there.....thanks for providing us with these films.....
3:36 "Here we are in Chicago and, four hours from now will be in L.A. it's hard to believe" it's so true. Thanks for posting! Love the old time films.
My fave vids!
Thanks for sharing and please, do it more often.
I love these videos! Keep em comin!
Above average acting for this time period, simulations of Precision Approach Radar, and shrimp boating at its finest! Love it!!
@nicpetnic I would say yeah. Tons of monitors throughout the building. At the sector there are 4, 1 for the radar screen, 1 for the flight data (assistant side of the sector) and the last 2 for the touchscreen communication systems.
Wow! We were shown this during our ATC Indoctrination at CYVR. Love the DC-8, love the dress slacks, white shirts and ties. Man, we looked PROFESSIONAL! A hoot to see PPI (Plan Position Indicator), Shrimp Boats and PAR (Precision Approach radar).
Now all I need is the Density Altitude film "With this baby we can go anywhere!"
Wonderful video
First time I've seen TWA gates at O'Hare :3
What an awesome time to fly ... before I was born!
Interesting that at this relatively late date they are using 2-digit (presumably 5-bit) « reply codes » for secondary radar, and not 8-bit, 4-digit 4096 transponder codes.
Take off from old Meigs field
cool video!
I love this one !
this is great!
more videos like these please
The Best Trainer ever @ 18:46 mark Ray Cullerton
Nice!
"uhh you're using poor judgment at this time sir".....no wayyyyy
@pigkiller7171 Ditto, it feels very strange hearing "Line up and wait" from tower controllers in the United States.
It's amazing how little the National Airspace System has changed since then. Most of the info covered is actually still valid. People wonder why our airports are plagued with delays. The airspace system definitely hasn't grown along with aircraft numbers and passenger numbers.
wow!!
@msccna218
Is it the same now just with computers?
The traffic was northwest-bound...so the turn to the left would put them behind the traffic.
A cultural treasure - thanks - more of the same, where do you get these? .....control tower training 1963....plenty of jobs there it seems. DC8 comfortable seats! oh, how nice, bring those back ! white shirts mandatory. .....DC8, what a beauty.
P.P.S. Here's to you, Grandpa Eric, and those gorgeous UA '8s... I'll bet you're either flying one of those or maybe a 38 right now.
man those radars were hard to read
The technology of things of 50 years ago still look like it hasn't changed muh since 1963 fascinating
That is so cool how they got radar contract because nowa days we have the transponder code
My dad was originally trained to use primary radar when he began his career in 1962. He was definitely at an advantage when the radar computers crashed.
I'm at 00:54. I bet 4/5 dislikes were accidental. I pray for the person who dislikes this.
Thanks Airboyd! I'll probably watch every one of your videos. It may take me a year or two, but I probably will...
Ok now I'm at 2:13. They took a 90sec helicopter flight between airports. Like a boss!!! Was that Meigs to ORD?
18,000 controllers, wait...isn't that less than what we have now?
Does this stuff still apply today?
all controllers in button down shirt and tie....lol.
That's what my dad had to wear. lol. He also hated those extremely heavy headsets they had to use; they gave him so pretty bad headaches.
Trafffic at ten 'o clock, so they give him a left turn?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...there used to be so much room that jets parked SIDEWAYS at the gate? And used TWO jetways?
Get *right* out of town.
That's what happens when you de-regulate the industry. Air fares drop to the point, that airlines cut each other's throats to survive, all the while, nickel and diming their employees. Things were a lot different before 1978.
The golden age of aviation, How is it that it came from that to regional pilots having to work 16 hour days, make $21k as a FO just to get that 1000 hours of PIC jet time to be eligible to be considered as a serious candidate for a major airline.
This travelling by jet is something. Here we are in Chicago and 4 hours from now we'll be in L.A.
Oh, that's nothing. In about a 100 years we'll be living like the Jetsons!
Stewardess checking tickets: "To Los Angeles?"
Like the plane might go somewhere else?
mrgraff42 it was common in the last century for planes to fly with multiple stops.
Good tactic to trip up the terrorists. If all United stewardesses were that sly, Tower Two would still be standing.
Look! No carry - ons!
Notice how fast the passengers boarded when people weren't dragging carryons behind their fat 21st century butts?
P.S. Boyd = Col John Boyd? B)
My dad was an air traffic controller, who began his career in 1962 in Chicago ARTCC and worked in 4 other facilities, retiring out of St. Louis Tower/TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) in 1988. When he began his career, all controllers had to wear white shirts, black ties, and black pants. Fortunately, it's not that way, anymore. I almost went into ATC, but decided there were better ways to make a living.
7:51 The ARTCC's look a bit different now... lol
no it hasn't and thats the problem!
Yup, ICAO standardised phrases to enhance safety - how horrible!
this was great...but can you notice there is not one person who isn't white in this whole video. Man have times changed for the better
Loved this. What a treasure. But I noticed one thing - look at all the white people.

Bad acting 🤔.......
