A well designed RTS game has three key strategies which counter each other: Turtle>Rush>Boom>Turtle. Also, the top players are always scouting and they remain flexible in order to react and then counter attack if they see a weakness. Minor harassment in early game also doubles as scouting, which isn't the same as an all in rush. All three strategies should be viable otherwise the game will become stale and boring.
All 3 are viable. Red was trying to raid a civ that can produce villagers for half the cost. The cost of his trades were not worth it. He should have adapted but kept with the same thing probably because it’s easy against newer players, but a skilled player easily beat him
@@NorthernBuffalo yeah it's easy, I guess a new player mindset to just desperately stick to the same thing and hope your opponent breaks. I'm still around this level
Once you had multiple tcs my dude really needed to switch up his strategy he relied way too much on catching one or two vills while losing half his horsemen.
For the same reason people are mad at any lack-of-action strat in a multiplayer strattegy game. They think it's boring, I honestly don't mind, as the strategic thinking is what entertains me, but some people want more action and things to happen through out the game.
@@nathanaeltheconqueror8628 Those people should probably play a game like C&C 3 or Red Alert 3 or something. You practically can't turtle in those games.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn Yeah, I agree. That stuff happens alot in games with havy strategic elements. There are lots of people who play them, that don't actually care about the strategic elements, more about learning the right moves for the right instances and then running around doing stuff.
You will hate me but I love turtling XD, building cities to make them pretty, put an archer within 2 centímetres on a wall, having a massive late game army with powder
Idk why the chinese didn't transition to chunoku's to snipe vills and kill spearmen or fast castle for siege or also boomed as well. Spent literally half the game rushing with horsemen doing literally nothing.
One of the things I like about walls now is that even partial walls can be useful, you don't necessarily need to make it complete, but just a platform to give your archers near immunity from cavalry, and make a region very hard to raid without casualties
It truly makes such a difference. I used to play an old RTS that was a bit too zoomed in too, and then I downloaded a mod that adjusted the camera zoom to be sliiiightly further out, and the game got so much more pleasant to play! I hope the devs are listening and does something about the camera
The way building get destroyed was way better in AOE 3. Here it looks like giant Lego set falling appart. Hope dev will be working on better visual mechanics.
Yeah. Ive been doing the same game's tatctics since age of Empire 2. I usually sorround entire cities with small fortification defended by archers and cavalry. Eventually I smash and entire city from outiside with Range weapons. Thats the perfect siege, then my soldier goes inside to bring chaos and death.
When you said you needed to connect your TC's to the network, what does that mean? I noticed you made sure to connect all of the building squares. What's the benefit to doing that?
Its a special ability of the civ he is playing, once he hits a specific milestone in how many houses are connected to the network he gets economic bonuses.
He got salty but he had the advantage he had you pinned was picking off workers etc but then didn't press in and looks like his unit comp was bad. If he had some front line troops to keep your men at arms back I think he would have done a lot better.
Turtling is just playing in a manner more defensive in nature, less all-in rush. Proper turtling strat is to wall up your eco pretty early and/or add a few towers/tc's to garrison in to protect ur eco from raiding, whilst constantly using that eco to create a military pressure that just pushes and pushes against the enemy. No good turtler intends to sit idly back the whole game and let his opponent gain full control of the map, that is a rookie mistake
What are the benefits of extra town centres in AoE4? I understand it in SC2 as that's the only place to drop of resources and in AoM it adds to pop cap. But since you can drop resources at other points is it just so you can produce workers faster?
The fact that Drongo get pissed with the red player doesn't stop harassing him with horsemen even when he even did not get early pikes, the constant Aussie swearing, the intense epic Saracen music played when raided in the background and the fact that Drongo manages to get Middle Golden Age despite all the odds makes this video PERFECT.
Sir Drongo, if you allow me to ask it, what is your latency? Just cuz there were so many times where you would click the villager to get in and they took at least .3s to respond... :(
Bad play by the chinese, when he got you off of the gold, he could have used that as an advantage to castle up. His second wonder being so far forward was also not good, especially with no archers to back them up. I do not enjoy the click micro generally, but especially in this game.
I love turtling but I just think the maps have mostly been too small in age of empires series to really make it work it. Usually the best strategy is to use the resources elsewhere.
Drongo probably recorded many games during the beta so that he could release gameplay gradually until launch day to keep viewers coming back. Easy strat
That guy was wayyyyyy too obsessed with harass that was pretty ineffectual against your strategy. But also you should've been making stable and archery range units much much earlier, there is no reason to be sticking on pikes for so long and trying to chase fast units with slow ones. You are a good player but won this game because opponent threw. Pikes > Cavalry > Archers > Pikes. Need rock paper and scissors to have a balanced strategy. If he had counter-boomed and gone harder on archers and not thrown away horsemen you'd have been absolutely fucked
im real excited to play this game, my main gripe is y it has to be so G rated and 6-yo friendly. hopefully free patch with some death animations n shit.
I love turtling, its fun to play defensive. But a skilled player will see that and adapt his strategy to counter, not just keep slammin units at the problem. Plenty of ways to counter turtle in this game.
I hate turtling. I've been playing multiplayer games vs hard AI, every teamate just builds an army and walls up. I build an army, attack, get close to taking out an AI , teamate stays turtled. I lose my troops , both AI counter attack me (my teamate still turtling) and take me out. Please stop turtling and work together making coordinated attacks.
I hate rushing. You dont get the full game experience if you only spam scouts on vils till the other guy runs out of food. Gotta let it build, build an army, organize your base, get some walls, have real battles with fully upgraded troops, then you see who is really the better player.
That's not how it goes tho. I used to hate rushing too, but in high levels people also know how to defend so rushing doesn't end it. Rushing is just part of the game, it will give you an advantage / disadvantage, but it wont necessarily end the game when players are equal. Good players play all types of strategies and can adapt and flow from strat to strat based on whats happening in the game.
I'm not even sure you could consider this turtling. He didn't even build a wall until almost 20 minutes in. Red did a great job in everything but transitioning out of his harass. The whole point of them adding the victory points was to punish the way aussie played this one and red didn't take advantage.
I feel like TCs are too powerful, the range is insane and they do so much damage. Do they even fire without any villager inside too ? I'd like to see a bit of a nerf, to promote more aggression.
@@ptealixpaint tbh red idea wasnt the best, if aussie was spamming pikes and booming real hard he should have switched strategy instead of trying over and over to raid vs all of that
