Your 1st!? You better under 10 years old ;P Next up, Starcraft, Warcraft, Command and Conquer, Planetary Annihilation, They Are Billions, Supreme Commander, Majesty, Stronghold, Ashes of the Singularity, Myth, Age of Mythology, Kingdom, Grim Nights...
I think it's great that they removed score. I come from sc2 and people would rebel if you wanted to introduce something like that there. Knowing your position in the game is a skill. Judging whether you are ahead and can attack or if you should play defense and try to catch up is an intuition that should be developed.
I don't disagree, but there is some skill in it! If you watch tier-1 players in AOE2, they watch score bumps as a way of judging things like age-ups (small drop when upgrade starts). But yeah in general its just a low-skill scouting replacement.
Totally agree, score only stressed me out and was a big distraction, also felt quite gamey and cheap. Without it intelligence scouting and game sense is more important.
In my opinion, there's way too much talk about nerfs in this game. From my perspective, what aoe4 has done right is to make very powerful civilization that are very different as well. If a particular part of a civ is powerful in one way, that doesn't necessarily mean it needs a nerf. It's better to lift up the civilizations that trail too far behind in the ways that make them unique. Nerfs may need to happen at some point, but not always.
Interestingly you've actually talked about a design philosophy that a lot of studios follow. Instead of nerfing what's strong, you buff what's weak. But honestly, we don't know the balance yet. Until people are used to the game and know all the tricks I don't think it's smart to nerf or buff anything.
Don't hold your breath for that. Relic will give the same unit 3 significant nerfs in the same patch making it go from overpowered to unplayable overnight. Not only that they will be months behind the meta and put out nerfs for strategies that have ceased to be problematic long ago. I'm not trying to be a hater. In fact I love CoH and DoW. But the truth is the post launch support for all their games is basically non-existent. For AOE4 most balance patches will probably ship with DLC.
I can definitely say that some landmarks need to be changed because they're not effective. A few units like Landsknecht are too weak, but otherwise the factions are different, rather than better or worse.
@@SendarSlayer That's pretty much what I'd like to see but especially in respect to what makes each civilization unique. For example, if Delhi Sultanate proves to be weaker as Drongo theorized in his tier list video, maybe give scholars the additional ability to each reduce research cost a bit (say like -1% for example which really stacks up by the end of the game). In that way, you make Delhi more viable while also emphasizing their unique playstyle! Just one example I thought of but I'm sure the concept could be applied to any civ the way they've designed them.
Great commentary. I was hooked from the beginning. I never thought talking about herding digital sheep could draw my interest, but here I am with a new favorite show.
I love the Chinese in Rise of Nations with their Fire Lancers unique unit. You get them an age earlier than any other civilization and they are mechanically really unique and intense. I think a lot of games are scared to embrace the terror that chinese gunpowder brought to warfare.
Bit of tip for spectator mode is that you can press F1 to select every military production building of the player you are focused on. That way you can see entire military production/research queue that are active right now. Same goes for economic buildings as well when you press F2. F3 is for blacksmiths. F4 is for landmarks.
watching all of this back later is gonna be so funny. We got great players going absolutely crazy over a gold mine but they won’t capture essentially free holy sites or relics for passive gold generation lol
It looks hilarious and takes so long because they don't have a "feel" how late game plays out in AoE 4 where gold are plenty (from trade routes, relics and sacred sites) and also the counter is very important in late game units. They tried to apply the usual AoE2 late game mindset with cheap units and few expensive gunpower cannons to overcome enemy base, which indeed is boring after awhile.
Boit wasn't buying cheap units. He was going full handcannons and knights for a good portion of the game, which are often unbeatable in large numbers. Yet he still lost to Sniper's trash
Like I said during stream, Boit should have went his unique men at arms. They're faster then normal MMA and cheaper then lancers, you can mass them and push into the longbowmen who also are slower then normal archers, with trebs as back up to siege the castles down. This was pretty early on in the games release if I recall and I'm sure people know better now. Entertaining game however that absolutely has to be said, even if I did have my head in my hands by the end xD
Agree, even Palace Guards can't directly go to take down enemy archers, but they are so efficient in cost for how much damage they make and how tanky they are, while also not vulnerable to sniper's spear spam. Another thing is that Chinese archer is inferior to English longbowman, while at the same time costing Boit tons of wood, which is precious in making all his superior siege units, super great game regardless for both players
For the British campaign I had all my civs on food and wood, only spend gold on upgrading Spearman and archers and went full soviet style sending hordes of these cheap units at the enemy positions. The AI had no chance.
Drongo I've been watching boit make questionable decisions for over an hour... I didn't believe believe a second. I feel like the sneaky landmark victory must have been an A click accident.
@32.50, I thought that the Chinese were doing a flanking attack and it turns out to be tiny villagers in hats dropping in a castle! Right in the middle of a fierce battle! Oh my God!
Whats the point of multiple markets all going to the same trade spot? Sorry im new here but couldnt the traders all just go to the same market? Edit: In regards to BOIT’s 2 markets but you mentioning you would have liked to see more markets up. Is it about the ability to pump out more traders frequently?
When he is saying stuff about Macro at 50:51, is he saying that he has a macro (meaning a program doing something for him so he doesn't have to click) or is it saying it is a large strategy like macro vs micro strategy?
For some reason the Chinese play keep throwing his gold into handcannons while clearly the English player doesn't waste too much gold into man-at-arms.
Why would you build multiple markets? Is it just so that you can build traders more quickly? Also why did they wait so late into the game to build markets? I've been building markets as soon I get access to them
50% hp isnt as strong at lets say 25% more damage for seige. Since in the situations where your seige gets overrun it will just survive a slight moment longer.
Have they added a way to edit the max age you can reach? Like in aoe2 you could cap the last age at feudal or castle, which I always thought made for more interesting games
Lack of culverin or springalds for those bombards/trebuchets was one of the mistakes both players did. Usually one culverin is more than enough if you can protect it. So you dont need 15 vils always repairing your castle.
You might have realised this already, but when casting a game like this if you want to see if they have made a certain building, you can click on any of their vills to check.
Looks like there is a Bombard coming out here, That is a wrong unit my friend! You need Nest of bees and you needed them yesterday! Actually Golden Commentary.. I thought he was biased at first for his friend Boit but actually he's quite neutral. Awesome commentary👏👏
I was wondering, what if advancing ages was chocked on points rather than resources? Also, I wanted to see more rustic vanguard action longer in early ages. Idk...
It's insane how top end players do very complex things amazingly well (macro, timings, etc) but fail to see the most basic things like your enemy having only one landmark.
So, there's currently a trick with markets/trade units. Build the markets close to the intended trade node. Mass up trade units right there. Once those units are out, re-home them to your best distance market you wish to return to. The trade units magically switch their held gold to that further market. This effectively gives one free trip for all such close trade units. A bit of micromanagement should give quite a bit faster turn around on investment.
I think Isengard could be used for cheezy castle drops. 1) You get perfect castle earlyer then other civs 2) You potentially got early pressure maa or longbows dispatchments covering it 3) You've got forward network of keeps buff with it
Can someone explain why they spread their buildings out so wide and like surround treelines etc? I normally keep my base compact but this is interesting
IMO, yes definitely. What is even the logic behind being able to see walls built in FOW? Also, why is that logic not applied to any other building then? Was there a developer that kept losing because enemies were walling them in? lol
