When you removed the temperature sender unit water should have run out-Did you not notice that-That would have told you that there was no water -I hope you have not cooked the Engine on your trip home????.
no, it take the water from the bottom of the rad so even if you have a little bit left its enough to circulate around. i had the same problem on mine. years later i am beginning to see my temp gauge is always too low so i think its either some air locked inside again or my thermostat is staying open.
