Neat and simple mod, it is infuriating when bikes don't come with a temp gauge, yet do have all sorts of other tech we don't care about. Happy New Year Jake, may 2022 be good to you! 🙂
These dual sports are always on last decades tech. Well the DRZ is last century, 1999 was the first year. I mean like honestly once you have a pipe on a single do you really need an RPM gauge🤣 like the power always drops off my redline. Even the $12k 701/690s don’t have one. But like I said I’d rather have water temp and oil pressure.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember seeing a tachometer on a dual sport/street and trail bike ever past the 70s. I can't remember exactly 70 what, but some old 2t Suzuki and yamaha I remember seeing dual gauges or a split cluster with both on them. I was doing some crf to xr swapping and am in the process of putting on a digital speedometer and had forgotten where the best place to go for the tachometer without making it bouncy and found your video. About bought that speedometer just before I settled on the one I got instead. I'll have to come back and see how well yours did and tell you if I got mine on and dialed in right and tell you what all features on the thing I got to work right on it lol.
Hell yeah man, I put one of those and a tach on my 250l. Good piece of mind knowing my bike is suffering from the daily flogging I put it through but will live to be tortured another day.
Great idea for adding temp gauge! I've always thought the same thing for air cooled bikes too. I don't like the idea of not knowing my temps when sitting in traffic on an air cooled bike.
I added a Water Temp gauge to my snowmobile .. very critical .. on a snowmobile because bare ground or pure ice may not throw any snow in the heat exchanger.. The Brand is called Daytona very compact ..
It's crazy seeing your channel now!!!! I watched you DAILY for years! I had some person things going on in life and quit watching RUclips for probably 2 years and when I got back on, I only caught up on videos from channels I had seen in my feed. One a few months went by of catching up to those channels I started to try and search channels I remembered and so many channels I looked up seemed like they got shadow banned or something. You don't even show up in my notifications anymore! 😒 people with millions of views only have maybe 100k views on their videos. It's like if you aren't main stream you're on the back burner now! There seems to be so much garbage on RUclips now, I miss the good ol days of watching you, do it with Dan and SubD!
I've got the blade style probe that you push into the radiator fins on my wr250r, dead accurate and also showed some serious over cooling on cold days so I also made a shroud to reduce airflow when it's chilly.
@@wojciechtechtips1602 mmm I guess that’s true, klr have an overcooking issue and the bores in those go out of round big time, don’t hear much about the wr so maybe you’re on to something there. Now I want to know the actual coolant temp 😂
Temp gauge is brilliant. I added a fan with 1 and replaced a cap with another. Course I ride a KTM XCF350, so little different but I agree with the practice. 😃👍
Sheesh! That intro had me rewinding and playing it back at .25x. Also, thanks for the bike mod videos. Even if I never do this to one of my bikes, it's good to see how it can be done at home.
@@TheGardenSnake I hope not! We got down to 2•F out here in East Texas. But it freaking felt like -26•F Lol! I wanted to go home to Utah, where it was a balmy 32'! Lol!
Yeah the fan switch I might do as well. But it won’t be as easy as the drz. The 300 uses the built in sensor and it’s the ecu that triggers it on. So I’d need to do a whole relay with a fuse set up. Still might do it.
@jakethegardensnake is the internal diameter really 19mm as the hose looks smaller..and i see you had trouble pushing the hose onto the in-line temp sensor ps: service manual says the following for the thermostat… begin to open: 81-84c (178-183F) fully open: 95c (203F)
very informative and easy to understand video. is the 05:32 hose size 250L and 300L the same if it is same what is the size?. The connection where it is located is it a spare connector 07:43. Thanks
Oh I’m sure it’s the same size as the 250L. The connectors are from the little thermostat dash and the sensor. That’s where I just ended up connecting them.
Question, do you like those in the bark buster mirrors? I've thought about getting some but don't know if id like them or not. Dont really use mirrors to be honest but the popo says ive gotta have one or id just take them off completely lol. But yeah, do you like them mounting like that?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but coolant temperature will only tell you what the thermostat is set to, not the engine temperature. Don't you really want the engine temperature? At most it will hit 130* or whatever the thermostat is made to so I guess at best you can tell when you need a new thermostat.
No, only under 180f will you be in the dark. And that’s not overheating so it’s not a big deal. Above that you’ll know exactly. In the real world once warmed up you’ll know the water temps on the fly. Big thing here is you can see if it’s overheating or getting up there.
@@TheGardenSnake thanks jake im going to try one out for sure. im in canada so ill try it in the summer. thanks buddy. iv been watching for years now. im about 20 years older than you. cheers.
Trail Tech does have a new version of the TTO temp gauge that can wire directly to the battery and even has a backlight BUT i think currently is only available for the spark plug applications. Seems like it would be an easy swap in the future if your current gauge loses its battery life
Well it looks like I’m getting a 450r tomorrow. Completely rebuilt. Do have a another question. What brand is your helmet? Gonna add to the list of stuff I’m getting for the bike. Have the O’Neal dirt helmet but after I convert it I’ll be riding it to work

It’s got some kinda diagnostic port but it’s not a OBD. But there are full on aftermarket dashboards you can get. But I’d lose the gear indicator, fuel level and few other things. Also the odometer is now compromised. But if you’re bike didn’t come with a dash at all like my Xr650r then they are nice.
Hey Jake, I know you completely removed the ABS system on your bike, but do you have any tips for those of us who would prefer to remove the rear ABS only, while making the front ABS switchable? Do you think that it would be possible to totally replace the rear ABS lines with regular brake lines like you did, but keep the front ABS system intact and add a switch to the ABS system via the fuse box? Which fuse would you be tapping into in this case? thanks mate, I'm really enjoying the informative entertaining build content.
If the water temp is high then so is the oil 99% of the time. The water temp is very important in a water cooled engine… And show me an easy way to add an oil temp sensor. I mean yeah I can do it but the time and cost are going up. But thanks for the input bubs….
