They did use wigs, they were called "gache". My Mom told me most were made from human hair, but also were made from horse hair, and black silk thread. And also lacquered wood in the case of the concubines wedding hairpeice.

The non-daily/commoner hairstyles would most likely take help from servants-another person, everyday styles should not be too complicated to require another pair of hands other than yourself's. Because maids need to do their hair too, and can't hope for others' help each and every time. ~
