How do you remove the plastic top piece?

It's not a plastic piece, it is the key. Can probably be cleaned to some level without removal.

It’s been a few years since I sold mine but don’t you press down to activate the switch and then turn it all the way to the right to pull it out? My memory is a bit hazy these days so I could be wrong. I had my GTR 1400 for ten years and never had any trouble with the main key.

Just had a memory reboot lol. When you have the ignition on, turn black knob to the right which switches off the ignition and you can then pull the key out. I did this every time I went to refuel.
