When you showed the historical examples of silly stockings, my brain immediately went to the weird-arse marginalia found in monastic documents. And now I must embroider butt-trumpets and phallus-trees. Sigh. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.
mega vibing with this because i am a big believer in doing the silly things that make you happy! i am That Person in a whole Outfit (because i like to dress up) while also wearing fun socks inside my combat boots (because it makes me happy). life's too short to take yourself too seriously.
Could cuffs be attached to the garters and worn over the edge of stocking like lace edge on both stocking and cuff with garter though lace/loops of both (think how medieval pointing is done)? That way you could mix and match stockings, garters, and cuffs. String the garters through before you don the stockings and cuffs.
My just for funsies project is a swamp coat style jacket made from a thrifted wool blanket and will be my Hogwarts professor vibes house coat sorta thing...
