Machine knitting a backwards cardigan, lots of beading, a tulle petticoat... gentle chaos.

...oh and there's an extent 1880s bodice in there, too. Folks, it's been hectic times around here, and when it's hectic times you get hectic art. Sometimes it's just what's necessary. I machine knit a backwards cardigan on a 7gg Brother domestic knitting machine with a cotton boucle yarn and beaded it with jet Swarovski crystals and pallettes. I knit the same boucle yarn into yardage and cut an...

Просмотров 2,2 тыс.5 месяцев назад

Let's learn English smocking- and recreate a 19th century English work shirt

Turns out making a basic button up shirt is NOT basic. Who knew?

I smooshed together two 16th century patterns... and got a corseted dress (I'm not mad.)
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Free pattern coming soon! (This is a complex pattern so I've called in some extra help to make sure it's coherent.) I Frankensteined together my Dorothea bodies and Farthingale patterns and got... a pretty corseted dress. (Sometimes dresses can just be pretty!)
Sewing a Tudor farthingale is hard. Let's make a modern one instead!

In which I make perhaps 60% of a Tudor Farthingale... and then make a modern version instead. Featuring local grass, copious amounts of hand sewing, and as much lint as anyone could ever want. As with the Elizabethan bodies, this pattern was taken almost exclusively from Patterns of Fashion 5, and therefore will not be available on my website. Insta: Anotherdreamgonewest
The Elizabethans knew how to snatch a waist | Sewing the Elizabeth I effigy bodies c. 1603
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Ok, I want to reinterpret these Elizabethan Effigy bodies, but in order to do that I need to know how they work. I took pattern information almost exclusively from Patterns of Fashion 5, and therefore the pattern information will not appear on my website for this one. (But the forthcoming reinterpreted patterns may!)

Lace makes everything better! I mean, it must, because we've been inserting it into garments for hundreds of years. I'd bet that one can fancy up even the most plain silhouette- a T-shirt- with enough lace (actually, I didn't use that much, lol.) Plus there's a free pattern on my website!
Making a different kind of chemise for a modern world | Free pattern!
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.9 месяцев назад
The first garment in my collection naturally had to be some sort of chemise. I played around with the cutting layout and proportions and came up with something a bit different- an off the shoulder variation that is one part Bridgerton (completely accidental but I guess I'll take it) and one part Medieval. Oh- and I launched a website with free patterns! (Well, just the one free pattern for now,...

    Love a good remake and this was good! I can see where the original pieces weren't quite where your normal wardrobe is and honestly clothes should be used so it's better this way. Although I may be sad if that Metallica tshirt bodice is on the chopping block as that was my favorite part. I should just make one myself then I guess 😆

    It dawns on me as I watch you hand stitch various pieces, for some it may seem tedious, for others a labor of love. You fall into that later category. But, there is so much more to it than that. You are looking at books and pictures and maybe museum collections for your ideas, and again there is a lot to delve into from that. You have to be able to deconstruct a picture to create a modern version. I know you’ve worked in the fashion industry, but you make it your own. The other, the era of clothing you are inspired by are all hand sewn, by candle. I can’t fathom the hours that went into making each elaborate piece. As I watch you hand stitch so much of your garments, that you are in essence, recreating that process in your modern versions. I don’t mean to say you aren’t utilizing your sewing machine, and these days they do all but pour your coffee. But, you use it judiciously. When you said you had to deconstructed your own sewing, I knew exactly how you felt. It had nothing to really do with the actual garment, but how you make your garments. You sew to make your garment last forever plus each one is an extension of you and a work of love.

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest 9 дней назад

      Aw thank you so much! I agree that machines at this point are so all-doing that I wouldn’t even know where to start with most of them. I think it just depends on the person doing the sewing and what they’re getting out of it. For me I love putting myself into the process and seeing my hand in the outcome 🤷‍♀️

    Looks VERY great, and good job with the lighting, I can see many of the details against the dark fabric. Out of curiosity, would you expect this garment to require regular laundering? If so, how would you do it? Do we think that it's gentle cycle safe in a washing machine?

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest 9 дней назад

      Thank you! Still learning my way around a light reflector, and I’m glad to hear the details were visible! I probably won’t launder this unless it really needs it, but I’m pretty liberal with the gentle cycle. I do gentle cycle, cold water, woolite, and then I take the garment out immediately and press between two towels to gently soak up the moisture. I would expect something like this to do ok in the wash (it’s just cotton velveteen and likely a poly viscose satin) but the pressing process would be atrocious.

    In the future I think it might be cool to explore styling your made pieces back with bought pieces that you wear daily already. For several projects you mentioned the idea of "modern interpretation" and I find, personally, what of the most direct ways of "modernizing" a historical-inspired piece is to smash it up against (pair it / coordinate it with) something that I bought off the rack. There's both a contrast and a balancing act then going on between the pieces; standard vs customized, uniform construction vs. handmade, normcore vs. history-bounding. I like wearing floor-length dresses with super-cropped hoodies as an example; the hoodie is absolutely modern and mass-produced, but then the skirt hem pooling on the floor feel very old-fashion. The main thing I use to keep it cohesive is mostly colors; if the colors coordinate well then the texture or the shapes can be really different.

    • @anotherdreamgonewest
      @anotherdreamgonewest Месяц назад

      Agreed! I have a few styling hacks that usually “normalize” historical clothing- I think that’s why I use black so often- even the most strictly historical piece works with a modern wardrobe as long as it’s black. I love the hoodie/long skirt idea, I feel that’s a pretty versatile move!

    Your backwards cardigan video definitely suffered from the issues with filming black fibres. It was easy to become confused about the orientation of the pieces (as you yourself know!) and so harder to follow to process, and harder to appreciate all the lovely detailing. Its about 40-50 degrees here in Walla Walla, WA. Usually we have snow. January is when it usually dips into the negative temperatures. Its been interesting to see your ideas turned into clothing in the past year. Not quite my thing but I am a construction nerd. Thanks for sharing your time and projects. Nobody makes clothes in this town. They are all qulters. This year I am finally able to sit up at the table and sew. I started from half an hour to four hours being my limit. I am finally making good progress in walking again too. I've made a knit boat neck top with red and black stripes over beige with 3/4 sleeves as a nod to the marinier. I made a Ponte knit tennis skirt that is 2 inches above the knee. Third project was a striped fitted button up blouse with an outrageously huge collar aka 70s. Final project was black stretch jeans with barrel legs. I ordered more fabric to redo the waistband. Yesterday I started cutting out pieces to the Friday pattern co's patina blouse. Today I will trace out the pattern pieces for my size. I might even get to pinning and cutting today. I'm making g from black cotton embroidered fabric with plain black cotton for the collar and cuffs. After that about two knit dresses, A corduroy jumper and a pair of stretch cotton blend trousers. Enough bragging on my part.

      Ah! It’s so hot here that negative temperatures sounds interesting (but I’m sure it’s less so when you’re actually in it!) we hit 70 degrees and everyone is in sweaters and puffer jackets. So glad to hear you’re able to do some sewing! It sounds like you’ve made a lot of progress on quite a few projects so congrats!
