Check valve lash before removing head. That can effect compression to and use new injectors seals. Add a little oil to each cylinder for ring gap. This will let you know if you have leaky valves. Then recheck compression.
I love Charlie. She was cracking me up with the coming into frame and dropping the ball, and the ball rolling into frame without her. lol. I really like your relaxed, methodical way of going after these builds. Keep up the great work.
You do show a lot of determination and pay attention to detail. Good job. Grandpa told his son in law,,, "you can buy a bargain but you can not cheaply build a bargain".
Hey Matt, good to see you, you got this brother! You always do a fine job my friend! Now you are going to see what you were fighting the first time you tried to crank it, looks like a lot of the fuel lines were clogged up! The hitachi needs just what you’re giving it, some love! Nobody took care of it like you can Matt!
Another great video. Charlie sure likes to chase the ball but needs someone to constantly throw it for him. Hope the 'guts' of the engine turn out ok. Blessings to you.
Good decision to pull engine and pump together. When you and Charlie were outside at night, and the coyote's were there, seems like they were getting kinda close. Your dog won't stand a chance if the coyote pack comes into your yard,,believe I'd have some firepower of some kind close at hand,,or set off an old fashioned signal cannon there behind the barn, scare the crap out of them!!😎😎😎
Simple or medium repair??? We all knew where this was going, you did too! You don’t seem to be the type of person to half ass anything. Do it right once. Good work man!
I could be wrong but it feels like someone got a new camera. Everything is crystal clear, the close ups/insta-zooms are fabulous! Absolutely love this content! I know NOTHING about all of this but I'd love a chance to spend a week helping. All I'm good for is sweeping and throwing a ball to that dog but whatever contribution I could make in exchange for the experience would be really cool. Plus a free T-shirt for compensation wouldn't be refused...
Charlie reminds me of my Lab. You could throw that ball all day and she wouldn't get bored. Makes me smile. The picture quality of your video is exceptional.
I think the best part of this video is watching his dog Charlie, oblivion to what’s going on, dropping the ball to play fetch. Screw the excavator, throw the ball!!
Amazing channel and actually extremely artistic in its attention to fine detail with highly intelligent commentary. But, yes but, I always want to know - do you do this in your off hours? Or all the time? As in, what is your day job? Or perhaps only mystery should surround the best of the best RUclips content...Thank you.
I’m not sure if I heard you correctly a year or so back. Before the dozer, you’ve never wrenched on heavy diesel machinery correct? If that’s the case you have definitely done your homework on this stuff and have a lot of confidence in yourself. Really enjoying the series bud.
Hi Matt, on any machine of an unknown history we always used to do a hot pressure wash with load a good degreaser, on all tanks before doing a static pressure test. It’s worth it for peace of mind and gives a clean start for any new engine rebuild components plus it drastically simplifies fuel, oil(s) and water system problem solving further down the rebuild road.
Your compression readings were not valid. You need an adapter that is the same length as the glow plug. The missing glow plug leaves more space for the air to go. It is good however that the compression readings were all close to each other. For the pump I believe you can get a kit to convert it from electronically controlled to hydraulically and eliminate the wires.
We get the coyotes howling like that a lot here. Often times right in my yard. Every other month. They wake us up. Especially when the moon is bright. They make some crazy odd sounds too.
You have low compression because the compression test plug you used has certainly a smaller volume than a stock glowplug. Test their volumes by inserting them in a full water graduated glass and measure their displacement. The important is to have even compressions.
Thanks for sharing Matt, stay safe and healthy brother! Sending prayers and good vibes to you and your family! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was hoping for an unpractical, but very interesting and funny transport of the engine with the D4, but doing it with the little Kubota was interesting too 🤣
Great job Matt, Engine I'd be tempted to leave alone - the comps are so close to each other its within spec - to double check you could always put a splash of oil in the bores & redo the compression test that way..
"Restore to what level?" is always the question. Most people cap the cost of a restoration to the value of the vehicle. This is the wrong methodology. Restoration represents the amount of work a machine can do over time. You can rebuild a machine not worth a lot but will produce work for decades. From an economist's point of view, the question is "What could you buy that will do the same amount of work over the same amount of time?" Most people will say this is reflected in the market value of a machine. True to a point. Because of your sweat equity, your machines have a much greater value built into them than would be reflected in the price, hence their ability to perform work well into the future. "Restore a way' I say, it makes economic sense in that the machine will be able to perform work well into the future at a lower cost than you could buy on the open market.
My friend had a 78 seville that his diesel tech said i think we can stiff an npr 3.9 td with the jr403e trans in and they did. Tons of cutting and fab work. He took me to toms trucks in so cal. Parked across from the shop entrance. Left it running and opened the hood. Like moths to a light. The diesel techs hovered around in. Wondering how in the heck did he wedge it in there.
Thanks for another awesome video. Ya gotta take care of yourself and family (chopping the wood for Winter time), the rest of us can and probably Will wait for any video that may be shared with us. Until then, Peace be with you.
LOL Charlie keeps bring you a ball at the most inconvenient times. You just see this random ball roll thru the picture 😂. Great job, especially on your own and in the dark half the time. I will keep watching with interest
When HF first opened up I bought a load balancer. Pretty cheap even today back then I think it was around fifty bucks. If you ever use one once you will never make a lift without one. Pulling transmissions and engines still bolted together becomes relatively easy as you can vary the balance point while under load both dropping and picking. In boats as well as heavy equipment it makes find the exact balance point you need easy while still using the strongest attachment points. It makes lifting loads a whole new game.
I have one, but there wasn't enough clearance to to use it and get the engine high enough to clear the excavator. It worked great when removing and installing my dozer winch though 👍
You can tell Charlie loves his daddy, he’s like my fur babies! They stay by me no matter what I’m doing, he’s checking on you to see if you’re OK Matt! They’re the best friends to have, my dogs are barking here when they heard the coyotes on the video! lol 😂 My dogs ran outside to see! lol 😂 Yeah, I’m still watching the video, I can’t miss a second of it so I pause it when I need to go do something! 🤷🏼
Yeah I'm betting the fuel tank gonna need some good cleaning. Definitely a good idea to take a look at it. Those compression numbers seem good for being cold. I've seen cylinders gain 30%-50% more compression when tested hot. I'm sure you're glad you took the engine out after all's said and done, a top rebuild seems good enough.
Matt is not afraid of anything, (ok, maybe the wife lol). What a hard worker. Poor pup just wants to play ball. So does my knuckle head. Gotta love'em though. Looking forward to the updates. I miss the bulldozer. But I know he is glad to have it earning it's keep.
Made my day when got see your video.i would CK barrings. There cheap your right there wouldn't take much to pull the pan it proudly needs a good cleaning any way.
Oh sure!!! I'm just gonna pull the engine to get to the wiring. Thats what I like about your channel, no stone left unturned. Keep it up. You know you will wind up painting that engine
I learn so much from your videos. I’m stripping down a jd350 d 1968-72 and its been horrendous. A diesel mech let me down and so I’ve had to diy it. Never done it before. Your videos and a couple of other guys are helping put the jigsaw together. I dropped the engine 😢and broke the timing/front cover at the oil filler. Then the crankshaft pulley absolutely refused to move-seized so i had no choice but to cut it off. Took out the sleeves which was surprisingly easy. I’m cleaning it now. I have new pistons and crankshaft and sleeves. I’m way more emotional when shit goes wrong than you are so thanks for not throwing stuff around when you might want to😅
Winter is coming and that is a perfect time to do a valve job, new engine sleeves, rings, piston and bearings. I have a SD22 Diesel engine (1980s version) and I can get a rebuild kit for about $500. Even includes gaskets, rings, pistons, sleeves, bearings for the entire engine. I would at least pull the head and inspect the upper end, cylinders, cam shaft, pistons/bearings, etc. Timing is good for the project and would put your mind at rest. Tell Charlie I said "Hello". I notice there are other great suggestions in your comments section. Take your time and do it right. I worked 5 years on my project and enjoyed every minute of it. best regards, Sam
Another highly entertaining episode in this series. Matt, I hope you flip the engine over and remove the oil pan and inspect the lower end. Can't hirt and omly cost a gasket to do so. Of course most of us subs would like to see you do a head job and new pistons job but I know you wannabe keep the budget low. Thanks for the Sunday evening entertainment.
I really look forward to your videos. That said, please make sure that your pup does not get hurt. Your pup seems to like to be where you are, so take care of the pup.
I see things that I'd like fixed, then I sit back and remind my self I don't need to worry cus Matt is a perfectionist and just can't put anything back that isn't WAY above my standards 😄 PS our hillbilly is strong like bull..
Finally we get to see your property! Please wear a hardhat when working under your lift. Matt, thank you for all the effort you put into making your videos... it really pays off in quality viewing.
I love watching your videos. Gets me cranked to start working on my 1974 F350. Get frustrated. Then I watch you and how methodical you dive in. Keep ‘em coming. 😊
Oil samples are a good practice. As far as what I could see, it looks like you may be able to get away with just a good hone and new rings and bearings? Once you mic the cylinders and journals you'll have a better idea, but it's looking pretty fair so far. Pump may be a different story, but you can only eat an elephant one bite at time.
IRL comes first... I liked watching you put the bolts back where they came from, can't forget where they go now 😊 got your next video on reminder for when it comes out

A perfect Sunday afternoon! Diesel Creek, Watch Wes Work and now Pacific Northwest Hillbilly! A trifecta of wrench turning enjoyment!
Add Marty T and the evening is sorted.
@@greentree180 I thought I was the only one watching all of them :)
Agreed!
My favorites also!
yes a perfect storm of quality content!
I appreciate your unfussed relaxed style, just taking everything as it happens to come without dramatics and without cussing. Well done!
That's on the blooper reel :D
Poor Charlie, all she wants is someone to play fetch with her. ❤
Charlie says...this ball won't throw itself! Lol
I would pull the pan and give a couple bearings a look just to make myself sleep better.
Without question. Engine is out of its house, go thru it!
Rings and bearings are cheap.
Charlie was the STAR of today's episode!
Check valve lash before removing head. That can effect compression to and use new injectors seals. Add a little oil to each cylinder for ring gap. This will let you know if you have leaky valves. Then recheck compression.
*- Thank you for helping Matt.*
Matt DO NOT do the wet compression test on a diesel engine as it wiĺl ignite the oil and it could injure you and damage your equipment.
The fact that the engine ran with all the crap you're finding surely means it's a pretty good motor, lol.
I feel you' ve made the right decision. Best of luck!
we knew this was coming
I love Charlie. She was cracking me up with the coming into frame and dropping the ball, and the ball rolling into frame without her. lol. I really like your relaxed, methodical way of going after these builds. Keep up the great work.
You do show a lot of determination and pay attention to detail. Good job. Grandpa told his son in law,,, "you can buy a bargain but you can not cheaply build a bargain".
Poor Charlie just wants to play ball
I'd be so distracted by my doggo wanting to play. My girls are all old now, so their idea of good afternoon fun is a long nap in the sun.
Listening to the insects in the background brought to mind “Zen and the art of excavator maintenance” …
Yep, my pup waits till I am way under a vehicle and then comes and gets right in my face…, too funny, love her…
Hey Matt, good to see you, you got this brother! You always do a fine job my friend! I love how Charlie picks the most dangerous possible area, sits, then looks at you as to ask, "So you're saying I should sit HERE? or...?"
That Poor old Girl was “Riddi’n Hard and Put Up Wet” Best of luck getting her back into working order.
I so respect this guy. I'd love to watch an interview with his wife and him.
Another great video. Charlie sure likes to chase the ball but needs someone to constantly throw it for him. Hope the 'guts' of the engine turn out ok. Blessings to you.
Crowdfunding for a tennis ball throwing device.

Charlie likes that ball
You sound a bit down. Just take one step at a time. We will be with you the whole time.

Thanks Matt. Get that firewood done up!
That machine was ridden hard and put away wet and it know no love. 😊
Great video, and I'm looking forward to the rest of this renovation series.
Charlie has a 'chuck-it' ball. That may be the best invention for dogs.
It could win a Nobark prize.
Superb. Ambition level off the scale. Didn’t flatten the dawg.
It is usually a good idea to leave the top bolt or a stud loosely threaded a little to give heavy parts a place to hang during removal.

I love Charlie wanting to play!
That sweet dog bringing the ball every two minutes just makes this video. Charlie is great :)

I think these older machines without the complicated emissions will hold their value over time much better than some of the newer stuff

coyotes are laughing at your battery hook-up !!😁
Good to see Charlie and Matt wrenching on some old iron. Keep Charlie safe from the coyotes
those compression test results are excellent so leave it alone and move on great job
