The real roots of youth violence | Craig Pinkney | TEDxBrum

- Video games and hip hop music often take the rap for inciting violence in the young, but urban youth specialist and lecturer Craig Pinkney knows that is far from the whole story. Craig shares his experience in engaging disaffected and violent youth, going beyond systems to find the root causes. He also calls for this to move from ‘not my problem’, to an issue with much greater community support.
Craig Pinkney is a Criminologist, Urban Youth Specialist, Lecturer and Director of Real Action UK - a charitable outreach organisation based in Birmingham who specialise in working with disaffected youth. Notable projects include: ‘Don’t Get Gassed’ a national anti-knife crime campaign which has over 50,000 views on RUclips. Craig is well-known for working with some of the cities most challenging young people, potentially high-risk offenders, victims of gang violence and youth who are deemed as hard to reach. Through mentoring, discussion, advocacy, sport, media, film and faith-based interventions, he believes giving a platform to young people will raise attainment and promote positive social change. Craig also lectures full time at University College Birmingham, specialising in youth violence, urban street gangs, extremism, trauma and black men’s desistance, and is part of the EU Gangs Project.

@daft wodd
He's right.
Look at the vast majority of school shootings and suicides in the youth. The root cause is bullying and feeling excluded. Then when one snaps, people are so clueless about how it happened.
Why does nobody talk about how similar it is to chimp behavior? The social dynamic, the power displays, the territoriality, the patrolling, the unpredictability, the raw violence, the irrationality, the group size and composition… I know it sounds inflammatory, comparing these youths to chimps… but the parallel is undeniable
my man Craig Pinkney hope this message goes viral
Young men need Fathers and families need to be strengthened.
homeboy, you are preaching to the choir! beautiful presentation, we absolutely are responsible for these kids.
what an excellent talk every teacher needs to hear this.
Thank you Sir. I have been trying to point out this situation and no one seems to have ears. It's a blessing at long last to hear the words l have been saying to others.
That was a great presentation,Its great that someone actually raises awareness on this subject .Things have been going crazy with youth gangs here in Greece, thank god not in my neighborhood but you should always be careful. There have been approximately maybe more than 1.700 cases that Greek courts face involving teenagers
Amazing lecturer; REAL TALK.
Im currently attending Colorado Technical University. We have been asked to listen to your videos so we can make a positive impact for the Youth. Thank You for your videos
Its great to see mentors like us teach functionality to the youth. Our community needs us .
Excellent presentation from Craig which resonates beyond our local communities in the U.K.
this was so powerful i pray more people develop such a mindset
No one ones to accept responsibility on several levels. That’s why the violence is so rampant
Well done! Thank you for your work
Craig, thank you for speaking up our schools and parents need to listen to your video but, most of all they need to listen to these problems in our communities and schools.
Fantastic! My best moments: 1. "Invisiblility" - it is an incredibly useful diagnostic tool to remember!, 2. passion, 3. toes in the nose for humor and 4. badge in the lift for re-enactment! :)
I do talk to the youth all the time, and that "invisibility" factor I realized subliminally. You have nailed it for me! This talk doubled my energy to continue. I am on the right path!
Thank you for this summary. It really helped me nail the core elements of what spoke to me so deeply.
Big respect craig real talk!
Powerful messages. Hope that you continue to be a catalyst for change.
Needed this- tired of crying and more tired of feeling helpless. I can't make sense of this and I can't ignore this.
Someone just got stabbed here. He was young, a footballer-, was playing football in the UK- his whole life ahead of him- GONE. A week before Christmas.
A month or so earlier- two young men got shot and killed. One was 27, the other was celebrating his 22nd Birthday.
I feel for the victims family and also the people that are killers and their family.
This is a generation that is getting killed or incarcerated. It is soul destroying to witness.
Thank you for this.
🙏🏾💗
Moving and passionate as always.
Thanks for the speech
Amen 🙏🏾❤️ inspired !
Inspiring .
Until youth/gang violence is treated as a socioeconomic or early development issue the violence will continue
Decisions....
In Glasgow it is treated as a public health problem . This has created a substantial decrease in knife crime
It's a parenting issue. Parent(s) show no/little love and don't take a active role in thier child's development . A lot parents unfortunately want to be there child's friend instead and are afraid to say NO.
@@johnmilligan6605 Thanks for sharing that information, I'll be sure to look into it.
Mainly a development issue regarding early childhood and teen influences. Poor kids can be morally upright and rich kids can be morally bankrupt after all.
This was very beneficial thank you
i 'am with you keep up the good work
I'm 63 now - Even back when I was in my early teens, school buses have always been a hotbed of problems where punks were in close proximity to "good" kids. There may be many reasons with kids acting as they do, having to do with a bad home life or external factors. In some cases, they just take pleasure in violence for the "rush" provided to their brain. It's a sad situation, and in many cases, they may only come to the realization after they reach adulthood. And no, I was not one of those that gave any trouble on school buses or anywhere else.
Ok boomer
If you weren’t one of them, why are you explaining the reasons behind what they do?
Ok You don’t think broken homes contribute to someone acting in a negative way or no supervision or guidance in their home?
That rush is better then anything in the world boa 😏
No one ever talks about Racism and Social problems.
Crazy to think i've seen this customer a few times, can't believe he's doing a ted talk

"In me is screaming to never trust my dad. Ever again. To never trust anyone. Ever again. I need to do better too. Absent father, everyday you're becoming more and more present in my life. Don't stop trying. Love, The Carcass Left Behind."
This is a poem about an Absent Father, but it seems it could be a poem about Youth Violence.
Inspirational man amazing
Very insightful
Its great to see mentors like us teach functionality to the youth. Our community needs us and it starts with great leadership. Good work !
When I was a young child in third grade, I looked at my class, and I was disgusted because everybody talked negatively about and wanted nothing to do with one of the students because she watched Dora the Explorer. I made friends with her, and everybody looked down on me and talked negatively about me because I was friends with that person nobody wanted to be friends with. I was also teased by my dad because he thought that I had a crush on this girl. I didn't, and I just wanted to do what was right. This girl also thought that I had a crush on her, and she had a crush on me so I was glad when my stepsister came to live with us because then she could be friends with her, and I didn't have to deal with her making love notes for me anymore. It was sweet of her to do that, but it kind of sketched me out. I have made other friends like this, and I still have some of those friendships today. When I first heard about racism, I was disgusted for the same reason that I was disgusted by my class wanted nothing to do with this girl that I was friends with. I live in Canada, and racism against the indigenous people here is the biggest problem we have with racism, and I will dedicate my life to stop it because it's not right, and it very much disgusts me.
Great synopsis!
insightful

This is very deep, I sometimes have suicidal thoughts but I have my friends and Girlfriend to talk to (yes I'm bi) and they help me with my depression. For anyone who is seeing this and if you have suicidal thoughts, please go to talk to someone that you trust, it can really help.
Great lesson. I’m doing Child and youth misbehavior in South Africa module. Thank you 👏🏽
Did my sba on youth violence and this interview got me snd A
This man is a good person.
flawless
Some of my theories is that, people sometimes inflict pain on others because they want to feel more powerful. They may feel so small in the hands of their own abuser, so they attack others to feel like they are in control of the situation. I haven’t read any theories or anything but thats just me spitballing this
Man There’s about millions of reasons. Let’s start by destroying the rap music, starts with parents absolutely
Bravo
People who have no respect for others have no respect for themselves.

i AGREE 150% WITH YOU. i HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH TROUBLE YOUTH NEARLY 50 YEARS.
Army are needed. Nuff said. Special military prisons. Its gone to far to try to reason with words.
This guy came to my school.
We definitely have to get down to the root causes of crimes and get help for these young people.
Root cause is all of us being in our own bubbles and allowing the powers that be control us
Root cause is low IQ, poor impulse control, broken homes, broken culture, and endless excuses for violent behavior.
The only thing I want to know is how to get a person that acts like they didn't set you up for a violent crime then tries to act like they are trying to help me. I hate two faced women, but one thing I can't stand is a two faced man. Practically unheard of in my circle except for one person. I wish this person can sit down with someone and let them talk to him about accepting responsibility for their actions and moving on because aint no forgiveness here.
There are invisible forces that are not mentioned in this prsentation good as it is. Environment shapes the mind. If you want to find the cause look at the environment. There are other points...but I don't wanna lecture.
How can the scales of human feeling not be disturbed after the mind receives everything that suffers under the indirect metaphysical images?
When a healthy person turns, for example,
In a familiar way, it does not occur to caution the mind arises with the intent of warning of the existence of a sudden thing because it does not exist.
The sudden alert sense of the mind can be changed through the events of bending the road itself and decorated with roses it and with flowers، so that the mind goes in the direction of positive, but the road leads in the end to a lonely, distant and cut place
This is the game of events that appear in the world of social media and everything that comes to the screens of mobile and smart technology fixed
It is necessary to monitor children with the intention of blinding the bloody scenes, even if they are not human, because seeing the scenes of human and animal violence is able to change the course of minds in the long run.

The maturation of the cultural word requires a hardship similar to the weight of mountains.
How many educational holes are left without blockages
By intellectuals and writers on the pretext of their preoccupation with the battlefield of the job and the search for a source of livelihood.
The dilemmas of education are increasing because the subject of poetry has been abolished, and you know that building, drawing, writing, and every fine craft needs a philosophical vision that comes from poetry first, second and third.
The construction of fortresses for the new generation must pass through several factors, the most important of which is the establishment of the concepts of respect for parents, teachers, society, the law and the homeland, the bestowal of in-kind and material prizes, and the intensification of security efforts in order to encircle the child’s mind with all available means of protection.
How can we sail in a clumsy boat?!
We must return to literary libraries, to targeted cinema, to honest work, to solidarity, cooperation, and brotherhood away from fanaticism, disagreements and differences of all kinds.

How could other person kill someone? How could a human being kill another human being?
They're those who say: what we see on television, what we see on our computer can have a tremendous impact on our behavior and in many cases bring out the much worse possible scenario. Violence in the media poses a threat to public health, as it leads to increased violence and aggression in the real world. The relationship between media violence and aggression in the real world is moderated by the nature of the media content, the characteristics and social impact on the person exposed to that content. We have to knows that media construct our reality and how we think and behave. The truth is that when we watch movies with violence act, we don't actually Think that it's affecting to our mind. Subconsciously, we just imagine «what if I was like that». Honestly, how often after watching movies with spies, you also imagine that you were a spy?
Be careful, be safe.

Ted there is never a wrong place at the wrong time people are always in the right place just going about their business.
I'm reminded of Patrick J Buchanan's deathless observation. "The cause of crime is criminals."
It's like that across the pond also?
Only as a whole society can we solve the problem of escalation of violence in society. Thank you for not being silent!
I invite all caring people to a unique event on May 7. International online forum "Global Crisis. We are People. We Want to Live" is a large-scale and unprecedented event, organized thanks to the independent unification of millions of people from 180 countries on the Creative Society platform.

arrogance and ignorance breed violence .... isn't it that simple ?
And of course the music
In summary, ask the community why they're violent
That is sad
Maybe if we held the parents accountable for their children's actions maybe then they'd "parent" and instill respect for everyone. That's the biggest reason why teens commit crimes, it all starts at home.
the truth is we need milions of parents to protect their kids and the grand childern and get involved

Racism and a pattern of an sick society teaches that. Plus add the denial of opportunity and a lack of empathy and patience, can and do cause a problem with any age.
Is the problem not on kids having kids???
And what about choice?
@@nurtured-channel2953 What about we becoming a solution? And if not shut up and mind your business.

How is this my problem? I only care for those that are a victim of violence. People need to tell these youths, life is about choices & consequences. People are not honest to the youth anymore, they are babying them and down playing what they do. For example: Someone can murder someone and people will make the youth murderer the victim instead of the suspect that on purposely killed someone. I do not get it.
