Black murder is normal | Michael Smith | TEDxJacksonville

- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this Talk, Pastor Michael T. Smith argues that the “normalcy” of black murder is engrained in our American culture. Indeed, the idea that a black American would be involved in a homicide-either as perpetrator or victim-is so broadly accepted as to be largely unnoticed.
Smith exposes the racism that underlies the appalling lack of outrage at high death rates in the black community, and highlights the hypocrisy of a society that glamorizes violence, but ignores its victims. “It doesn’t take action to keep racism going,” Smith observes, “it takes inaction.”
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

@DYING# PATRIOT Minstrel refers to the portrayal of negative stereotypes of blacks. Most rappers embody just that... All the negative stereotypes. Makes us look like murderers, drug dealers, pimps n hoes... And they get paid to portray us badly. Ross doesn't even see how he reaffirms the negative, it at least I hope he doesn't see. It would be sad to know that he is doing it on purpose, which some rappers do. Anyway... Not Gon bash Rick Ross too much. Just saying that active negative portrayal equals Minstrel. I think rap music and its culture is often misinterpreted as a blatant glorification of Crime and murder, but if you do look at some of the philosophies and ideologies of the biggest names in rap, you can see that it's a reflection of their life, a story told about their struggles and their hardships.
That’s true, that’s what makes rap music so appealing. The fact is that there’s tons of rap that isn’t about all that, and there’s even rap that touches on all that without glorifying it, but the stuff that does is expertly curated for the popular music stations which is the issue.

This dude was way ahead on communication on this point. 2021
Watch this a few years back, now I'm here again in 2023 ❤
It went from portraying life in the hood and the harsh realities to glorifying it and making it a fantasy. There’s still a beautiful underground scene of “conscious” hip
Hop but you don’t hear it on the radio much...
What’s messed up about the conscious scene is how white the audiences are. These artists aren’t having the right people hear their message
Here after George Froyd death.. YT recommended this too and glad they did
Just stumbled by this video n am in awe!
Damn skippy
Same
I understand you sister but I still dont like this video. He politely saying these statistics, then sliding the clumsy white people joke in. Its true but it's not grabbing me the right way.
@@kingjonesda1st4 Did you watch the entire video
This video was posted eight years ago. It does not have enough views! This message is so important let’s all share it.
Back again in 2023 I posted this on Facebook and they removed it!
Many of us know this. There are a lot of us who are trying to change how we have become use to celebrating this culture. But, people have the desire to choose.
They have the right to choose, but they need a different road to look down with different choices and lessons. How can we make that happen? What can we do? We should ask our leaders that exact question. How can these kids grow up different? Support from EVERYONE in the community. Love is stronger than hate and it takes alot less energy, and honestly it feels alot better. I love everyone. I'm a weirdo.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood... Robert Frost’s poem about choices has never been so topical. First graders should be exposed to it and a great deal of time spent discussing this topic. Same for second, third...college senior year.

Watching this from the UK and I appreciate this man telling it how it is. Facing the truth is one of the hardest things you can do.Rather than being offended and getting defensive, open your ears and listen . This treatment of ethnic minorities goes beyond police brutality. Its bigger than we realise and I fully agree that inaction will allow this cancer called Racism to spread.
Damn 2022 I can shead a tear on the outside. On the inside I'm pouring down in tears. But I gotta be strong and show no sign of weakness or smile. It's sad cause I wanna enjoy life but struggle is real
