The all new Corvette E-Ray is designed as a very fast year round Corvette Grand Tourer, but that doesn't mean it's not quick. With 655 HP combined and all-wheel-drive, it's actually the quickest accelerating Corvette ever. It can be driven in all seasons and all conditions. But is that what people want? is it the best Corvett ever or just middle of the road?

I think the super and turbo charged hybrid Volvos might be in contender for the most complicated consumer product ever.
Yeah and like…why? What are they accomplishing?
In a super/hyper car it would be understandable but in a daily driver Volvo?? Seems pointless.
@@romanovmarkelyon1021300 & 400 +hp out of a 2.0l 4cyl in order to move a 3 row SUV around.
Ha, I had 17 xc90 T8 and it was a complex nightmare. The reliability rivaled my 04 A6, in the shop every month on avg for 24 months.
2018 xc60 t8. Been great for 70k. It's complicated but it's also not made by monkeys.
Polestar 1 gotta be a bitch and a half
Looks a LOT better in the single color configuration. Highlighting the scoops in black doesn’t do the design any favors IMO
YES! Solid color looks classy!
Exactly
100% CORRRRRRECT
🤮
Agree. Following Lambo, Ferrari and McClaren design cues looks terrible…😂
The sliding footage at the end was great. I liked how you showed that you didn't quite get it at first, but then you adjusted and got longer slides with each attempt.
WOW, NOW WILL HAVE TO DO RESEARCH TO FIX ISSUES AFTER 100K MILES...
@wisdoma4860 Shut up dude.
Idk if id consider it a "consumer product" but what the mad lads do over at Koenigsegg is pretty complicated, nonetheless Chevy wasn't taking any prisoners with the C8 generation and in this day and age we have to commened them for that!
That's far from a consumer product. It's not even exotic, super rich guys can't even get one new sometimes. I'd argue it's much easier for Koenigsegg as their cars won't be driven everyday, beaten up by millions in all types of conditions. 90% of CVK cars won't ever see 15k miles maybe ever. Chevy has to make 100s of thousands of cars that will be DRIVEN. That's a consumer product imo
@@betonblack3621this is so true, Koenigsegg is awesome but I really do wonder how much of their wild experiments actually work reliably. I can't imagine a small company like that would have the funding to do proper r&d for reliability tests.
I'm not really sure that they're doing anything all that complicated, in the grand scheme of things. I can think of lots of everyday cars which have more complexity than anything I've seen in a Koenigsegg.
Seems like the natural competitor to the E-Ray is the 911 4S/4GTS even more than the 296 and Artura.
its way better then the porsche, its a 296 competitor
The electric whine kinda sounds like a supercharger 😍
They did a great job on the sound tuning, it sounds like a car out of Cyberpunk 2077.
I'd love to see a smaller version of either the C8 or put into a Camaro (yah, I know it's going away). The C8 has gotten too big in my opinion.
No Alpha 2 Gen 7 Camaro is a crime!
Truly awful orange interior. Did they skin trump?
thats not orange its red and it’s extremely popular for the C8
Hey Matt, great video as always.
At roughly 6:45 - 6:51 you seem to pull the paddle and there is a significant delay between pulling the paddle and the car shifting. Is this an audio mix thing or does the car take the .25 second delay to shift?
I thought the same thing. Seems awful slow to shift based off the sound.
Woah good catch
If you look at his chin it looks like the audio is just out of sync in that section
It's just the audio sync being slightly off, if it's really the same drivetrain from the Stingray the dual clutch shifts as fast as you can pull the paddle.
It’s “complicated.”
Mercedes newest plug-in AMGs (like C63 and S63e) are far more complicated.
Have electric turbos, 2-speed trans for e-motor + multi-clutch ICE trans, variable AWD for both electric and ICE motor (rather than kne for each axle), air suspension, anti-roll bars, etc.
Some of those upshifts seemed super slow. At ~6:45 mark there is a big delay between paddle and shift.
Edit: it might be that the audio and video arent perfectly sync'd?
Yes, the audio is definitely off in the cabin. I agree
Yep, sync issue. Thought it was just me
It seems like a built in KERS mode too. Seems really clever and I'm surprised it's faster than the z06 in some aspects.
Love the mono color scheme and the sound of the electric motor, reminiscent of a supercharger.
Don’t like the looks but I think it’s a fantastic car.
perfect setup for a hybrid sports car. This is use on racing car prototypes but they use even a smaller batteries/energy storage that are good for like 10 seconds only. For that setup you have the option to engage the motor only when you want ar a push of a button usually on straight lines. That makes driving the car unique and challenging because you need to find the best strategy for the win . but with a bigger battery that is not necessary, it keeps things a bit easier
Great review, Matt, thanks! I'll check out your Road & Track article, but it's too late now to pull my order back from the factory (not that I would), so I should have an ERay of my own very soon!
The best vette ever will always be the c7 zr1 ,I appreciate the c8 and what’s to come ,but the c7 z was everything great about the history of corvette into one
And I am glad that I will buy the Corvette C8 E-Ray.
C6 zo6
Have to agree. It was the peak of the classic format of front mounted, push rod V8, with a manual.
Exactly this. This was the last true American dream muscle corvette. Please buy C8s everybody so I may afford myself a C6 ZR1 or C7 z06 one day…..
C7 styling dates itself and not in a good way.
I think the ZR1 is going to be the Z06 with this hybrid system.
It’s going to be a twin turbo Z06.
As do I. The "850 HP TT LT6" claim has never made any sense to me for multiple reasons.
Wrong
ZR1 will be Twin turbo LT6. The Zora will add the hybrid system to that.
@@corystansburywell you were wrong
I’ll take “what is an extended warranty” for the win Alex.
This😂
image this with a turbo kit on low boost. Would be an absolute monster
This new Chevy NSX seems pretty cool.
WILD to think that claiming to be "the most complicated vehicle ever made" is a selling point? Aka "you'll have EXPENSIVE problems."
I’ll bet it’s nowhere near as bad as the issues I’ve had out of BMWs
@@mogulme6190dang it sorry to hear that. Spending good money really should equate to less problems 🤷♂️
on devait pouvoir l'acheter mi octobre. qu'en est il ? J.en peux plus d''attendre pour la commander
Im a NSX guy all the way over this but this is a very nice setup. Chevy out did them selves. Just like the NSX Hybrid, give it 2-5 years and these will be worth more than the Stingray all day lol
Epic Videos as always Matt. Can’t wait to read the article in Road & Track and I am sure you Podcast this.
Was the E-ray the one that cracked two carbon wheels during the PCOTY testing?
Don’t worry, it’ll break pretty soon ;)
"You can even chirp the front tires" on acceleration. What are the rear tires doing? Chirping, or spinning? Less concern with pushing the front end sounds nice. Not being able to drift as easy probably won't bother most of us mortals. Sounds like they accomplished what I had hoped. I just don't know if I'm "financially" willing. The strike should give me more time to think about it. Yes, I've been on a list for awhile.
The rear tires are gripping.
It’s pretty normal for front tires to slip on acceleration on AWD vehicles. The weight transfers to the rear, front tires have less traction.
Most cars have an open diff in the center. In this case no diff, so they can spin independently of the rear.
@@Maattttheww So the rear tires are NOT spinning when the fronts chirp off the line?
@@TheSmokingTire Wow! hang on I would imagine. Thanks!
Jeep 4xe Rubicon with a One-Touch roof is a pretty complicated car based off of that metric. Turbo gas engine, multiple electric motors, retracting soft-top w/ removable side windows, with the power train going through an 8speed + transfer case. Also has an "auto" mode for the 4x4 system. Kinda funny when you think of it.
Shoot add the locking electronic differential. And it’s plug in hybrid
The irony is the last thing you want is a complicated product from Stellantis. Love my Wrangler but there's a reason I don't own a new one.
For the road, this seems like such a sweet spot.
Possibly the best spec c8 I've ever seen. Black on extended red. Good lord that thing is beautiful. Unsure why that ugly blue one was used for the b-roll
The Torque is not 495, its 595 ft-lbs.
no its 615
@@mikedelape6609 no it's 595
I'm waiting for one of these to be totaled due to flood damage and someone completely guts it and does an all wheel drive manual build with the body. That'll be years down the road though.
Nice tire shredding at the end! 🤙
Portland, JAMAICA in the Building!!! 👑🇯🇲🔥💥🌟⭐💯💎
Im here and I'll take two
the BMW i8 is like I'm a joke to you it"s up there in complication it even charges. it has a turbocharger too. carbonfiber reinforced plastic body .
@ThesmokingTire: It’s the most complex consumer product on sale today. I’m not saying this, Tadge Juechter, a man who knows a thing or two about Corvettes as the Executive Chief Engineer of the whole car, is saying this. “If you get an E-Ray convertible,” he says, [with a mechanical power folding top, gas and electric powertrains, magnetic shocks, all wheel drive, and a dual clutch transmission], “it is the most complex consumer product ever sold.” I don’t have a way to directly refute this claim, but I can’t think of another car currently on sale that does come with all these things.
The Ferrari SF90 Spider has all that plus two more electric motors!
Hey Matt ... You speak really funny with a full face helmet on. Nxt time you're not actually moving the car down the road please lose the helmet and then I will UNDERSTAND just what the f??K you are actually saying . Ha, ha. Love the video.
I would say the main interest with this car is for someone who is looking for something ‘new’ and ‘novel’. I’m definitely one of these people ‘interested’ in electric cars but not enough to buy a TSLA or deal with the charging issues. The z06 is definitely a love letter to ICE but it also has the worst cons with ICE (gas guzzler tax etc). Eray is a good choice as bottom line, it’s something new in this part of the market.
What a waste of money. Hybrid cars for the track just add weight with decreasing effectiveness until you are driving a C8 that A. weighs more and B. siphons power to recharge what is essentially a capacitor. But hey, it now gets the ULEV or "sustainable" stamp of silliness...
I don't know man...i still can't get over the auto only corvette. Its not like I'm some angsty teen either, we've got a BW, im in my 40's. Im prime demo and all i see is people "over"paying for manuals. Hell, buying old ones sight unseen for new car money is getting normalized.
The sound from the electric motor seems to be fake and added from the speakers.
nope
Great car
if your ok with children mining cobalt for the battery carry on buying these awful cars. its a disgrace.matt conveniently doesnt mention the horrors involved in making this battery, but will happily bash other companies for bad shut lines and poor quality for clicks.
More complicated? New c63? 4 cylinder turbo handbuilt, full ev capable phev.. Two transmissions.. So many modes for everything
This may be quicker but I prefer the Z06. Nothing like a flat plane crank v8
The Acura NSX hybrid is a complicated car. It has two electric motors in the front, which are controlled by computers to provide torque vectoring
Yeah I would have to drive one of these quite a bit to see how it felt before considering buying one (a good idea generally anyway). If it felt unnatural or unpredictable that would be hard pass. I have driven some that route both the electric motor and ICE power through the transmission ('23 BMW X5 45e) and that has worked pretty well.
Ferrari 296 GTB spider/Laferrari Aperta/SF90 Spider all have the same convertible tops with gas and electric powertrain components and mag ride
Chevy should put this electric drivetrain in the back of a hot hatch and make an AWD hybrid WRX-killer
Pole star 1 any 53amg with the i6 Porsche 918 it’s so many cars that have significantly more tech imo than this car it’s a simple approach imo compared to other cars
Non-Z06 C8's just scream for decent wheels. Factory options just don't do it for me
Ride to watch this video twice and had to turn it off with the muffled helmet talking. Nice canary yellow OP41
Peak automotive technology. There really is no other vehicle in the world better. Perhaps no other product as advanced.
Very cool video, but promise us, you’ll never do one with a helmet on again, was brutal with that muffle
Isn't the Michelin PS5 S in production now? I wonder why they haven't changed.
11:37 For a European choosing between the various C8s the E-Ray means more accessibility to city centers, and more future proof in the fast accelerating environmental drive.
Agreed, and as a European the E-ray fits us alot better than the hardcore Z06 machine since we have alot more strict rules about sound than in the US.
Wow! You didn't cream your pants in excitement this time like you did when you first drove the Stingray...
Being that this is the initial model year launch of the C8 E-Ray, my concern is the GM QUIRK that will come into fruition. I understand where the warranty comes in, but I'm curious how GM would resolve future issues that WILL come up.
With that said, still an amazing sports car.!🔥
I wouldn't mind pairing this with my 16 V3,...a.k.a...SLICK WILLIE!😁
Honestly it seems like the kinda car that if I got to test drive it I wouldn’t want to leave without taking it home. Just me
"All season grand tourer," but you still can't get it with adaptive cruise control.
Is GM gonna make a hot hatch or what? They should've beefed up the Cruz
Incorrect as far as not having to change the structure of car for motor and battery pack. They had to changes.
Truly one of the most "The Smoking Tire" videos on the channel!
Ferrari ff with 2 gear boxes and 4wd comes close to being as complicated
The new C63E is pretty fucking complicated
So I can choose hybrid or two engines? Cool!
Thats not the sound from the electric motor, its faked. Still sounds cool though.
Bro you In that damn harnesses can't be real right now. lol
How many seat belts is Matt wearing or is he wearing something to help him with his head.
Just founded out about this car yesterday because of Forza Motorsport 8
E Ray looks awesome
I'm willing to spend 3x for the Ferrari batch. 🤪
Been looking for a wallet like that
Throw it in the gutter and go by another society we love in for sure
almost like they wanted to do this form the start
They know how to make numbers go, but they have no soul.
I'm sure the germans have made a more complicated car.
Polestar One might be more complicated.
The big issue is price. The e-Ray costs approximately 50% more than the Sting Ray which is a pretty fast car to begin with. I question whether the e-Ray is 50% better. I also don’t doubt that, being AWD, it is better in poor weather conditions. But if few (if any) people take their $70,000 Vette out in bad weather, what makes anyone think they are going to take their $100,000 Vette out in bad weather???
Don’t get me wrong: I like the car. The hard part for me is figuring out a use case, especially given the cost.
70k and 100k dont exist, my stingray came out too 112,535 out the door, the eray is 140-160
2:26 not a convertible, but the turbocharged, supercharged, 3 electric motor plug-in hybrid Polestar One would like a word.
The xc90 recharge is turbocharged, supercharged, and is a PHEV
“Most complicated consumer product ever”
In the age of EVs and hypercars? And coming from GM? I’d sooner believe the Tesla Roadster is coming out tomorrow.
Enjoyed the last couple of minutes immensely
That is the only shirt you can wear with that color spec.
Hey Matt- This E-Ray isn’t anywhere near the wheelhouse of a Ferrari 296GTB ……C&D just recoreded a 9.7@150MPH(!) 1/4 mile, this thing barely traps 130MPH….. 🚌 bus lengths between the two
That slide footage is excellent
the only hang up with a platform like this is those miles upon miles long snow covered hills. Once that battery dies, you are back to a 2wd car. I can think of a 7 or 8 mile long 8% grade in central PA that I would NOT take that car to in snow.
battery dies?? it doesnt die, theres no charging its not a plug in hybrid
It's a Corvette. The same guys are going to buy it that buy all the other Corvettes. I see those Corvette guys regularly here in Southwest Florida. They are about 70 years old, give or take 5 years. They are boisterous. They probably were originally from New York or maybe Chicago. And they love to tell you about the time they raced the other car either from the light or on the interstate. They wouldn't even know what a track or autocross course looked like so if this one gets them to 85 or 100mph a little faster before they have to let off the throttle, then this is the one they want. You can usually spot these guys even if they aren't anywhere near their Corvette.
im 35 and i own a brand new C8 Z06, this is a major stereotype
its 615 lbs of torque not 495
Mode charge, mode charge. We are looking…
I‘d buy this one because I‘d use it as a daily, all weather, all season GT to get to wherever I need to get to with all my stuff (guitars and related equipment, not golf bags) while enkoying my car and the downtime of every commute with utmost grip and safety.... It combones practicality and enjoyment and breakneck quickness and speed, not to mention that it looks soooooo amazong! It‘s a win on so many levels. DREAMCAR!! Wow.....
All I have to do now is pray for the money to buy one 🙏
Let’s go!
Wow, that is a seriously RED interior
E-ray is awesome, but as far as if its the most complicated performance vehicle made, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is always going to be in the conversation. With an 8.0 Liter, quad turbo w16, with 64 valves, four camshafts, and ten radiators, its an engineering marvel (nightmare) as well.
It's pretty neat for sure, curious ho wmuch extra weight all that adds. But either way, I can't even find a base stingray for MSRP, and I've been looking. Everything gets snatched up and sold for over MSRP with 5-10k on it. So I kinda got no hope for the up-trim editions like this.
2:25 possibly the 296 gtb maybe?
You have to give Chevy full credit for creating these fantastic cars at a reasonable price point.
Sadly, dealers and swappers have made them to expensive to make them a good bet, and then there is the problem that they just don't look great.
I can buy a 3 year old AMG GT with 505 hp dual turbo V8 with low mileage. It will give the performance, luxury and prestige at a price that is lower than a used Corvette. Go figure.
I assumed the electric motor sound was synthesized and pumped through the interior speakers, but is that not actually the case?
It would be very cool if they actually made the natural motor noises audible in the cabin
If they do end up adding the electric motor to the Z06 to make the ZR1, that will be the best of both worlds. The extra weight and complexity might not make it an ideal track car, but I think the E-Ray has a lot of real world advantages, like AWD for consistent launches and winter driving for those of us who live in the Northeast. It really makes electric assist pretty seamless, since you do not have to plug it in, which can be a big advantage if you don't have your own garage. Yes, I'm sure the electric assist will run out after a while, and the extra weight becomes a disadvantage, but how long can you really go flat out on a highway in the U.S. in a high performance sports car? Real world, it seems pretty impressive for its mission.
early rumors were that the Z06 engine would get twin turbos for a "ZR1" model THEN an even higher model with the twin turbo flaplane engine PLUS hybrid, 1000hp
@@aw11man26this is what I would get. I need it all, the Flat plane motor with turbos plus the Electric front axle plus the new Zr1 body work
Engineers said, a few years ago, that the C8 chassis was engineered from the beginning to accept to electric motors in the front. The base C8 chassis is the same. Chevy has been planning on making the C8 a hybrid from the beginning. Me, I'll take the flat plane engine with a proper 6 speed manual and call it a day
@@aw11man26they will never make a manual ever again, neither will ferrari or lamborghini, its over, get over it
@@mikedelape6609 no sheet genius.
It is more all purpose because it has the electric motor assist that can make it quieter and provide smoother, more refined acceleration. Also it will probably get slightly better gas mileage, especially if used up and down mountain roads. It is more all weather than other Corvettes simply because it has all wheel drive, instead of RWD.
