as someone who dabbles in refurbishing artisanal leather goods and wristwatches, for personal enjoyment, and also has a background in the luxury space, i have to say this was one of the most well-informed and informative conversations i have listened to online. well done, gentlemen. i hope to visit peter's atelier in zürich, when i get the chance.
That story about the shooting star bag killed me. If I had one of those bags, it would be so much more special to me and I would NEVER part with it. Imagine how much more care was put into a bag the craftsman made for himself or as a gift for a family member!
This was a SUPER interesting podcast, however... All I really learned is that there's too many variables over the last century of especially Hermes production to really know what I'm getting from a secondhand store is actually real so buying second hand is not reliable and buying from the boutiques is not realistic because I don't want to spend unnecessary "quota money" and jump through hoops for a bag. Plus, there's "exceptional fakes" and terrible quality real bags (at 21:00) so if I know that the fake or dupe I'm buying is coming from an actual artisan and not some sweatshop, then why not take my money to the highest quality completely artisan made bags? I don't like being duped into believing that something was completely made in France by one artisan when in reality (Chanel, LV, I'm looking at you!) the bag was manufactured in China and shipped to France to be sewn together or hardware was slapped on, and that's it. Not worth it to me. I also hear a lot of women make assumptions about China. It's like they genuinely believe EVERY factory is a sweatshop there, simply because of the location. It's a bit racist honestly. Why is it so hard to believe that there are genuinely good workers who are choosing to work at factories with decent standards in some places of the country?
This is so true. They are even faking affordable brands like Tory Burch and coach. And resellers lie saying they’ve authenticated items and they haven’t.
This is such a massive scam by these resellers. I have seen what are clearly fakes on Vestiaire for example and there isn’t even a way to report items on their app like eBay has. It’s a joke. Poshmark and The Real Real are probably the worst of them all. These luxury resellers are totally in a conflict of interest because it hurts their bottom line to call out fakes in their supply.
So from what I get you need years of experience to differentiate between real and fake. There can even be „original“ bags that are just not real because they are not produced for the real customers 😂 And even authenticators are having a hard time sometimes because there are so many variables. So for me that means - just buy bags that you love. You never know if a bag is real or not. If you buy a real one you never know if you can resell it or not because even resellers have a hard time. So bags are not an investment, but rather consumer goods. Thank you for the education about bags :) you have definitely changed the way I see these bags now. The Hermes craze seems like the Dutch Tulip mania. When nobody sees the virtual value any more the market crashes.
I love this interview, I have been sold fakes on all the platforms, and I don't spend lux money. I am just buying designers like coach and dooney. I am reading that book the status game, it's really fascinating, after your last interview
@@tanner.leatherstein had to make a quick break but just finished watching and I'm watching and loving all your content 😊 it doesn't matter if its a review on a bag/brand or this vlogs for a more in depth knowledge, I'm like a sponge learning more in every video you post 😅 Thank you so much for sharing it all with us 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The real dupe is that people are paying thousands of dollars for something that only cost a fraction of the price. Maybe it’s time people just start buying good quality and stop being so concerned with a brand name
spot on. And they are proud to have been duped. They feel they have achieved something or they are something special because they can pay £10k for a bag that is really worth a few hundred pounds at most. Someone argued that it gave them joy when they use their bag. Like how brainwashed do you have to be. I get the investment value angle. But that artificial value has been made possible by those that have been duped.
he just said some Herme's fakes were better made than Herme's...... welp theres no reason to spend $10,000-15,000 just to be able to buy a $10,000 bag.
@@preidieactually, you’re incorrect. At time stamp 8:01, Peter uses the example of Hermes saddle stitching to illustrate that some fakes are better made and more labor intensive than the authentic.
@@prettytalia143 I heard what he said. Just because a bag has a tiny bit of machine stitching over saddle isn’t worse made it’s for a reason or fakes. I’m sure he is in no way really implying that the fakes are better. Not a hope in hell. I’ve just been round the secret places in turkey today and believe me some are good very good but they are not Hermes.
I work in the luxury industry and learnt to make them when I was very very young. I personally would not push myself to afford luxury goods, or to borrow money from the bank to pay for any luxury goods. Not against it. But I also know the making of luxury goods cannot be judge simply on materials cost. The cost of their tools, building factories, testing and tryouts, hiring people to design and to manage the creative process are costs. If we given a random person the same tools, same fabrics, normally no person can make it fast like the luxury brands, unless they are well trained. But I still don’t buy in the idea that the present luxury goods are real luxury. Because there are so many substitutes available. These goods go out of fashion very fast. And they don’t give people the same cultural power and status anymore. People nowadays know appearance and styles are an illusion, which can be faked. What people do to themselves, a good physique, and other people around them matter more than what they wear. Caring a “luxury bag” looks good, but it can be cheap when people do not live up to the image that they project. I have met people wearing the cheapest clothes and owns expensive properties in private. They don’t need to please themselves or others by using luxury goods, and their circles doesn’t look at what people wear. They look up straight into their bank accounts, public financial sheets, and estimate value of properties.
Very informative video ! Concerning customs seizing, it's true that most agents do not have the knowledge but there have been some issues at certain airports where luxury items carriers would literally need that they purchase the item otherwise the items would be deemed replicas/fakes ! It's the case for Zurich for example
Although Steve is a great craftsman, as Peter said in the interview, there are so many iterations of these bags that its impossible to know for sure. You will have to see these bags on a daily basis to get accustomed to them and know what to look for.
Agreed. He did such a good job on that refurbished Birkin. It was completely wrecked and he made it perfect again. I'd buy a handmade bag from him any day! Worth it!
54:00 The real reason nobody nowadays wants Balenciaga is because they ruined their brand by pushing child abuse in their advertising campaign. No one supports kiddy diddlers. You couldn't pay anyone I know to wear Balenciaga. Ugh🤢
One more comment lol , I feel Chanel, and louis Vuitton quality has gone down the handbags I buy today feel thinner . I feel they might be cutting corners , In the materials they are using, Also you mentioned Gucci when I went in to look I told the SA I had a Soho Disco Bag he asked me if it was an older bag I said yes he told me if I bring that bag in they would redo the front and make the Gucci symbol bigger or stand out like the new ones . I might just do it .
I’d love to hear about how to distinguish microfiber leather from genuine leather. If I buy a leather handbag, is there a way to tell if the bag is made from genuine leather, or microfiber leather?
just burn it . if it eventually melts , its microfiber (even with the recent developments of flame retardant microfiber , and a mix of leather and plastic) . If it reeks of a burnt hair (aka real human skin) , its leather.
This is true. I purchased a LV Pouchette a year ago and it was so awfully constructed that I sent it back. I then ordered a replica and it is PRISTINE! I was shocked. I purchased an authentic bandeau to dress it up as I’d planned with the real bag.
Now Ebay has the seller send any luxury item for over 500 dollars in for authentication before they send it to the buyer. And otherwise, if it’s a brand they don’t authenticate and it fails when you have it authenticated, you get a refund. I feel comfortable.
of course greedy lvmh has dibs on AI identification system, there is simply no way to compete with lvmh, wonder how hermes feels about this as they do not "like" each other and hermes has good reason, even the French gov;t sided with hermes
Wow, what interesting guys and a cool conversation ! Made me to relax and not feel guilty about the Chanel bag I tried to sell on eBay recently and it was just returned to me as eBay authentication service considered it not authentic

Now I know what to look for if I come across a vintage one.
You should make videos about small local leather goods stores and give the small brands some love too! I always wonder about some of my local shops.
As the cost of new goods skyrocket, I think that more transparency in the authentication process is really necessary.
This is a great podcast so much information here!!! Makes you think twice about buying from these luxury brands.

Luxury brands used to clear out "out of season" bags at 10-30% of origonal retail.

But how and where to learn more to authenticate bags? Thank you for interesting podcast

You can use a pocket microscope - this quickly tells you whether it is a fabric or leather as the fibres are very different
everything is a big illusion , some fakes are really good, while other authentic are not so good !

What about entrupy online authenticator how can you trust them ..
What I’m hearing is if you want the real thing 100%, buy it at the actual boutique or from someone with Peter’s expertise in that specific brand
What about the canvas and jacquard do they not count as luxury. I know lv sells canvas very pricey. I love coach jacquard 👍
