- Join the concrete crew on a hot Wisconsin summer day as we begin work on a new driveway project. We broke out the old concrete and the sub grade was terrible so I had to excavate WAY down and add 3" gravel so we could firm up the base. The quad axle dump truck ended up getting stuck in the mud again which cost us a lot of time and frustration. It also caused me to miss best mom Monday, which was NOT my favorite. Enjoy

Pat is one of them oldschool workers. He shows up early, does exactly what he's told and also things without needing to be told, and usually does it right (still learning Ryans way), and goes the extra mile with caring for the trucks.
I'm the same way and I'm 20 it just depends on how you were raised and the workers you were trained by and around I believe.

@@maryellis3661 Honestly I don't think it is. Ryan is an extremely generous employer and obviously pays his guys well. Not one of the boys on my team would dream of making mistakes like these without learning from them. My boys wouldn't dream of showing up late, and if they absolutely had to, they would let me know the night before. Things happen obviously, traffic, car issues etc. But that doesn't excuse it happening what seems like daily. They even did it when he booked a fishing charter for the day and still payed their wages!

I would have been mad at Big Ray for sure! He even said "I didn't want to dump where the guy told me to, so I went somewhere else and got stuck." It was 100% his fault. 😂
He said he didn't feel safe dumping where he was told to because of tilt, so he moved.
The dump should take better care of their yard - They literally have thousands of tons of gravel they could lay out, with a machine that can move and flatten the ground. People are putting to much blame on Ray. Only so much he can actually do.

42:31 Cumulative error. You have to work to a baseline from one end - don't measure from points you measured out - always go back to the baseline. A good draughtsman will give you baseline dimensions for long runs so you don't have to work it out with maths, because that's another potential point of error.
43:09 The tape measure hook is meant to be loose like that - it has play equivalent to the thickness of the return so when you're measuring inside you get the same position as if you measure to the outside.
Yip a running measurement is far more accurate..

Also, using to end of the hook on the tape measure isn’t very accurate because you’re measuring the hypotenuse… many tiny mistakes can add up at longer distances.
Yep biggest thing was just measuring multiple times instead of cumulative measurements ran all at once with the long tape

Part of being a driver is surveying where you drive into, I drove box trucks into construction areas and always surveyed my path and listened to the gentleman who was going to offload me.

Husband said “As a Front Discharge Concrete driver and a Dump truck driver it’s always your fault by not walking the site even though they told you go over there, you should know by looking if the ground is solid or not and by the way it’s been raining there, certain areas would be soft” Also he should be Pre-Tripping the truck every morning and filling up the truck after end of shift!

yes, i have my cdl and do concrete aswell. your husband is 100% right. you can get a sense of what looks good and what doesnt. if there is any doubt always just get out and walk your path. a simple little walk can save so much money and time

I think you need to tell your guys it's OK to do side work but they better be available when you need them. If their feelings get hurt, too bad, so sad. You take pretty good care of them, especially Eric.

You should think about making a check list for your guys, end of the day ( clean out of trucks) and start of shift (equipment and supplies are stocked on the truck)
Spend a bunch of time making a list of rules they won’t follow, because he won’t enforce anything? That’s silly. Instead, you make a note that you getting bothered by dumb stuff they do at work brings in more money than if he has a great crew with no drama.
